She is the Master of Nursery Rhyme in the Imperial Holy Grail War of the Heian-kyō Singularity.

Profile

Identity

A person of the 10th~11th Century. Born as the eldest son of the Minamoto clan, he is a figure who contributed to the development of the entire Seiwa GenjiWP line as the founder of the Settsu Genji branch. He is also the strongest Mystery Slayer of the Heian periodWP who destroyed many monstrosities, such as “Shuten-douji of Mount OoeWP”, the “Giant SpiderWP (Tsuchigumo (土蜘蛛WP?, lit. "Earth/Dirt Spider")) of the Imperial CapitalWP”, and "Ushi-OniWP (牛鬼WP?, lit. "Ox-Oni") of Sensou-jiWP”. Leading her subordinates, Raikou's Four Heavenly Kings (頼光四天王, Raikou Shiten'nō?) – Watanabe-no-Tsuna, Sakata Kintoki, Urabe Suetake and Usui Sadamitsu – she continued to protect the peace of the capital. Naturally, he is a male in historical fact.[1][2] As for the reason why she is a woman, it seems to be related to the secret of her birth.[1]

Unbeknownst to most, Raikou was born as Ushi Gozen, a descendant of Gozu Tennou (牛頭天王?, lit. "Ox-Head Heavenly King"), and was thus abandoned and imprisoned by her father. However, realizing she is an indisputable genius, her father reinvited her back to the family under the guise of a newborn son as Minamoto-no-Raikou. The defeat of Ushi-Oni was actually an act to separate and seal away her Oni part.[3]

Old JoururiWP: The True Form of Ushi-Gozen (Outline)

The child of Minamoto no MitsunakaWP, who was born as the heaven-sent child of Gozu Tennou, was left in the care of a temple as an unwanted child and was raised in secret because of his abnormal birth (being the child of an Oni). On the occasion of turning 15 years old, the unwanted child gave himself the name “Ushi-Gozen”, and he built up a demonic country for himself at Suzugamori, ShinagawaWP. The ones who departed to exterminate him was Minamoto-no-Raikou, a samurai who has the same father as him, and the Four Heavenly Kings that were commanded by Raikou.[2]

Meanwhile, it was Sakata no Kintoki who decided in his mind to save only Ushi-Gozen’s life during the extermination in any way possible. Away from the capital for a mission, Kintoki proceeded towards the base of Ushi-Gozen instead, but negotiations broke down. The subordinates of Ushi-Gozen were closed in and destroyed by the Four Heavenly Kings, as well as by Raikou, who were all accompanying Kintoki while hidden.[2]

Already up to this point, Gozen entered into the Asakusa River (Sumida RiverWP), and it would become the shape of a huge ox with a bodily height of approximately ten shaku, before it would spout water at the enemy armies, drowning many people to death. Ushi-Gozen was aware that the figures of the Four Heavenly Kings were not in sight among the enemy ranks, so he broke into a gallop towards the enemy camp, eight travelling horsemen, and seven strong samurai, before submerging to the bottom of Asakusa River and leaving these words behind: “One year, thunder will nominate someone in the capital.[2]

The episode regarding Raikou’s half-brother. Although he is precisely Raikou’s younger brother, there is a theory that he was thought to be a “female” because of the name “Gozen”. (The Ushi-Oni is a monster that possesses the special characteristic of frequently “taking on the form of a female”, and the Ushi-Oni also appears before Minamoto-no-Raikou in the “Taiheiki”, taking on the form of “that mother”.)[2]

In addition, Ushi-Gozen was the avatar of Gozu Tennou, and Gozu Tennou was the incarnation of ŚakraWP (Indra).[2]

History

In this work, Raikou appears as a woman. This person is the true figure of Minamoto-no-Raikou, and “Ushi-Gozen” is the younger sister of Minamoto-no-Raikou in the old Joururi, “The True Form of Ushi-Gozen”————[2]

The way of these things came from an interpretation. The daughter of Minamoto no Mitsunaka, who was born as the heaven-sent child of Gozu Tennou, was left in the care of a temple as a male and was raised in secret because of her abnormal birth (being an Oni child). On the occasion of turning 15 years old, she was brought back to the capital to play an active role, being gifted the name Minamoto-no-Raikou. Her name was established as a military commander who, on the surface, drove away many mysteries, taking on in the beginning Ushi-Oni (who is close to her in a sense). Consequently, the episodes of “Sakata no Kintoki protecting Ushi-Gozen, who had fallen into a predicament of being driven into a corner”, “the life and death struggle between Minamoto-no-Raikou and the demonic Ushi-Gozen”, etc., as depicted in “The True Form of Ushi-Gozen”, were somehow actually speaking of the events…[2]

… of the conflicts with herself. For the purpose of launching herself to the center stage of history as a central figure of the Minamoto clan, Minamoto-no-Raikou was attempting to detach “Ushi-Gozen”, who is by definition the aspect of her demonic nature/strange form. Speaking of the modern era, the land that corresponds to Tokyo was where Raikou contended against her tempestuous self by means of a deep meditation. Raikou faced with “Ushi-Gozen”… the demon inside her, and Ushi-Gozen finally separated from Raikou, manifesting as an avatar of Gozu Tennou. The sky became a storm, the thunder roared chaotically, and the earth broke apart. Raikou was to “kill herself” together with the Four Heavenly Kings in order to defeat this being.[2]

In this way, it became obvious what the reason was for Sakata no Kintoki to start protecting Ushi-Gozen in the middle of this battle. Kintoki pondered about Raikou, his substitute parent when he was being brought up, and he understands that killing Ushi-Gozen will also kill Raikou as the two are linked. Kintoki, in order to save Raikou, needs to “kill while keeping alive” Ushi-Gozen————in other words, preaching the power and love of the bond between parent and child, he saw the conclusion as Ushi-Gozen was sealed (returned back) inside of Raikou.[2]

Appearance

An elegant, virtuous and glamorous woman in the prime of her youth. While a cool-headed military woman, Raikou is also a beautiful woman overflowing with tolerance. Surely the personification of maternal love.[1][2]

She has very long hair, which she ties at the very end.

She appears to wear some kind of a latex bodysuit, with a piece of cloth draped over her chest, with a heart-shaped insignia, linked to her collar. A similar piece of cloth is found over her crotch, tied by a rope around her waist. Raikou possesses some armor in the form of tight gauntlets and grieves, elbow and knee-length respectively. Her Katana is seen sheathed, connected to her by another sort of rope.

In her second Ascension, the collar and cloth over her chest are removed, revealing her breasts and the knot-work of the rope-like strings tied around her body. A quiver holding a set of arrows appears joined by her right hip, and her left hand now holds a tall bow.

In her third Ascension, she obtains samurai armor in the form of long shoulder pads, and now possesses head ornaments on each side, which resemble unfolded fans. Her right hand now holds her katana.

Kijyo Koyo says that Raikou resembles her grandfather, Minamoto no Tsunemoto.[4]

Personality

« So... what is the problem with being a mother...? »

(Minamoto-no-Raikou)

Raikou is a diligent career soldier, but she becomes a doting crybaby prone to worrying when concerning matters related to Kintoki.[1][2] As a matter of fact, she is passive and introverted.[2] Although she is seen as a person with a good sense to make peace pleasant for everyone, because her true nature (a nature mixed with Divinity) is inhuman, she grasps everything in an overlooking manner, as well as in a big-picture perspective. On the other hand, her affection towards those she came to like is strong, becoming the embodiment of maternal love that “makes the world her enemy if it is for the sake of her child.” For her, a “lover” is equal to “her own child”. The person herself does not really notice how out of sync that way of perceiving things is.[1][2]

During moments where she looks after Kintoki, Raikou would not say that she had said “Kintoki. I will discipline you not as your older sister, but as your mother”, among other things. Thereafter, her first pronoun towards Kintoki became “Mother”.[2]

Raikou, since birth, has continually suffered for she had thought of herself as something “close to a demon”, even if she has the blood of a god. Below her devotions, such as responding to the expectations of her father, and defending the Imperial Capital, she is constantly bearing a viewpoint that “I am not a human being.” She cannot live as a human being, and she also cannot live as a demonic being.[2]

For that sort of Raikou, the encounter with Sakata no Kintoki, who had been backing her up as one of her guardians, and who possesses a similar mixed-race origin much like herself, albeit weaker than her own’s, grew to be a little salvation for her. Raikou swore that “although I cannot become familiar with you as an older sister, I will discipline you as a mother”, and that was also her purpose in not letting Kintoki be exposed to the experience of the same solitude she had suffered. To her father, she was thrown away as unnecessary, and for Raikou, she did not experience maternal love, but the days of disciplining Kintoki as a substitute parent were her only “human days”.[2] Raikou's own mother had died saving her, and having never experienced maternal love for herself she became fixated on her own ideal of what it meant to be a mother. However, her father insisted that she had to act as a man at all times and so she had no choice but to suppress her wishes for motherhood.

Such days were also the bygone days, and one day, Kintoki became an adult. A new demon appeared in the Imperial Capital. That was Shuten-douji. Boasting “freedom as a demonic being” and doing as she likes, Shuten-douji enjoyed herself in the world of humans, and that very state was “what I wanted to be.” Disdain. Envy. Jealousy. Yearning. For Raikou, Shuten-douji was a “close stranger” that mixed up her feelings just like that. As for Raikou herself, she did not assail Shuten-douji aggressively compared to the other criminals. Because up to a time, she ascertained that Shuten-douji was an acquaintance of Kintoki from his childhood days.[2]

As far as Raikou is concerned, the Master who became her contractor is an earnest salvation that had appeared in the darkness. Continuing from Kintoki, she sees the Master as a person she was fated to meet, who accepted and contracted with her as a demonic being. Speaking of that doting, it is as fierce as it can be. However, given that she has a strong desire to monopolize him or her, she will press a question with a sick look as if she had suffered from one being unfaithful to her, and she will cry immediately if she sees the Master averting his or her gaze. Speaking of her maternal love, it gives off an impression of thoughtfulness, but her maternal love goes way too far, becoming “a conversion of the child into her own possession, and snatching away all of his or her freedom and future.” Although Raikou’s affections are at the stage of insanity, Raikou’s own high intelligence and strong sense of reason does not make this aspect be noticed as such (even to the people in the vicinity, as well as to Raikou herself).[2]

Her relationship with her historical children is much more complex, and her own memories of how she came to take care of them are mutually irreconcilable with each other due to history recording her as a man who sired children with many wives. The mere mention of them is enough to cause her to enter a dissociative state (dubbed her "lone warrior mode" by Kintoki) in which she fixates on her duty to destroy the enemies of the Genji to the exclusion of everything else. Said state is highly unstable even for a Berserker, and if she remains in it for too long she will end up destroying her own Spirit Core.

Relationships

Sakata Kintoki
"Oh Kintoki, are you still causing trouble like that? H-Hey, where are you going?! I am merely looking out for you, my child... You're so cruel, I could cry..."[5]
"Mother is the shadow prefect right now. I will not be able to play the role of mother as often, but...Kintoki? Why do you hang your head like that? Be a good boy and hold your head high. (Tug!) ...Kintoki? Kintoki? You're so pale... I see you have caught a cold. You must have fallen asleep naked again! Naughty, Kintoki."[5]
"Kintoki, ahh Kintoki… Hehe, you still have a grain of rice on your cheek. Forever a child."[2]
“I am worried. Given that I am now the Shadow Public Morals Committee’s Chairwoman, the number of times I conduct myself as a mother just like usual has decreased. Please, I hope you do not do things such as turning yourself to delinquency.”[6]
Sakata Kintoki (Rider)
"...As the shadow prefect, I have gained courage. That's why I am going to finally ask this question. In fact, I am compelled to ask: Kintoki! I have been holding this question within myself all this time! You... Y-your hairstyle with your bangs grown out and teased up in that way...did you perhaps become a delinquent!? Hey, wait! Kintoki! You're not getting away from me! Kintoki!"[5]

Oh, that was a different me and a different you… Well, that doesn't concern US. But…well, that is true… I suppose you did good work back there."[5]
An oni who is the same as the source that corrupts the public morals. “Hey, your existence is prohibited!”[6]
Shuten-douji /Ibuki-douji
"I sense a troublesome bug... Perhaps that ragged oni girl over there. Oh, do not fret. When I crush her, neither you nor Kintoki will have to watch."[5]
"I found it! I have found it! I have found the oni who I believe to be the source of all of this corruption! Please take a look, Master. That insect's very existence itself destroys dignity... No, please don't look. One look, and your eyes will be tainted! Unnnnngh... Unacceptable, unacceptable! Its existence is completely unacceptable!"[5]

Xuanzang Sanzang
"Oh? What do I think of the monk's outfit? I believe it is exemplary, of course. She is wearing a highly virtuous Buddhist stole... Even if she were to wear a bikini underneath, would that matter? ...That's not what I said during the event? Is that a problem?"[5]
Raikou, who concluded with “They are making the summer event festive”, “That is proof” and “They already changed into swimsuits in Chaldea”, declares to Xuanzang Sanzang, “If you want to be rehabilitated, come along with me, and that will undoubtedly conform to the great intentions of the Honourable Buddha as well, do you not agree?” Xuanzang Sanzang, who cannot help but feel the divine protection of the gods from Raikou, turned out to be in very high spirits, saying “This isn’t particularly a swimsuit, but interesting! I wanna see what you’ll do!”, and entered into the race together with Raikou.[6]
Arthur Pendragon
"Yes, what is it, Sir Knight? An eyesore? You believe I may overstimulate the young ones? Huh... I have no idea what you are talking about... Yes? What is it? Hehe, you really are an austere person. You may be worthy of becoming a shadow prefect."[5]

Nitocris (Swimsuit)
"It is OK if it is only your Saint Graph’s First Stage."[6]
Frankenstein (Swimsuit)
“It is OK during the race.”
(Because Fran shows little exposure at the time of running the race, it is OK to Raikou.) But given that it is a swimsuit attire if Fran is outside of the race, Raikou’s response becomes “Not good. Leaving too many gaps is not good of you, so properly cover up the spots that should be hidden!”[6]
Troublesome Romantic Relationship Male Servants
"Hmmm... I do not know why I feels restless. I feel a tingling sensation... It is almost as if someone is staring intently at me. Perhaps it is someone who wants to protect the world's morality with me, but is shyly hiding in the bushes!"[5]

Role

Fate/EXTRA CCC Fox Tail

She is defeated in the second round by Suzuka Gozen.[7][8]

Fate/Grand Order

Event: Rashoumon

Accumulating too much divine energy, Raikou became Ushi Gozen.[9] Afterward, she created the distortion using the Grail and the Authority inherited from Gozu Tennou. She then filled the Grail with wine and placed it in Kyoto, planning to intoxicate everyone there so they'd kill one another.[3]

Event: Onigashima

Ushi create Onigashima to serve as a place where Sakata Kintoki can be safe from the scorn of the human world. She drew the island in existence and created its oni in the same matter. These oni were the same as the ones she drew for Kintoki during his childhood. Not all the oni were drawn well though with the better ones being called Onimaru and the others being compared to scribbles. While the Onimaru served as gatekeepers, the lesser oni were used to further the island's construction along with the humans they enslaved. Once the island is completed, Ushi will destroy all the oni.[3]

Then, acting as Raikou, she went around killing every oni she came across.[3] Ritsuka's party encounters her while she is slaughtering oni for killing an innocent old man. After the oni are slain, Raikou thanks the group for their efforts. Without giving her name, she parts ways with the group hoping their paths will cross again.[10]

She meets the group again while they're fighting Shuten-douji and Ibaraki-douji. She tries to ambush Ibaraki, but the latter dodges thanks to Shuten's warning. She reprimands Kintoki for rudely asking her why she's on the island and starts to cry when she thinks Kintoki thinks ill of her as his "mother". Kintoki calls her his stepmother, which upsets Raikou further. After forcing Shuten and Ibaraki to retreat, Raikou goes to chase after them but gets distracted hugging Kintoki, much to his embarrassment. Kintoki reminds her that the oni are getting away, so Raikou leaves, asking the others to take care of Kintoki.[11]

Raikou catches up to Shuten and Ibaraki at the island's peak. There she decapitates Ibaraki and slices Shuten's belly open. Ritsuka's party soon arrives and finds Raikou standing before the Grail. Kintoki warns the others about getting closer, recognizing Raikou is Ushi now. Ushi explains how she created the island and its oni with the Grail and her Authority to create a refuge for those scorned by human society. Revealing she mortally wounded Shuten and slew Ibaraki a moment ago, she tries to convince Kintoki to join her as she constructed the island for him. She also admits to being responsible for the Rashoumon incident. Kintoki refuses to join her and fights her with the others.[3]

As the group struggle against her, Ushi prepares to finish them off when Shuten ambushes her, only to be slain by her. Kintoki uses the opening Shuten created and defeats Ushi with Golden Spark. However, at the last moment, Ushi returned to being Raikou and jumped into the lightning to knock herself out. Raikou then wakes up, having no recollection of being Ushi. Despite that, though, she recognizes the incident as her fault and apologizes for her behavior. Seeing everyone is so kind to her, Raikou is happy that Kintoki has been blessed with such good friends. She thanks Ritsuka for stopping her other self and decides to become their Servant to repay that debt. She then disappears, promising to embrace them when they meet again.[9]

Later, however, Raikou returns, having used sheer will before she completely returned to the Throne because she forgot something. She tells the group that the three great oni become stronger the more they're defeated. They're reviving at this moment, and Raikou warns they may try to leave the island. While they'll disappear once Onigashima does, the great oni will cause great harm if left unchecked. Mash asks her why she made them like that. Raikou admits she wanted to please Kintoki, remarking the stronger the better. She then challenges the group to slay the great oni until Onigashima vanishes.[12]

Halloween Event: Halloween Comeback! Super Ultra ☆ Giant Pumpkin Village

Raikou, along with Hassan of Serenity and Kiyohime, is deployed to the Lava Zone by Cleopatra. When Elizabeth's party comes, the three sense Ritsuka and try searching for them. Raikou soon starts blasting lightning at assumed hiding spots. This prompts  Elizabeth Báthory's party to unveil themselves from Robin Hood's cloak. Raikou tells the group that they can pass once they hand over Ritsuka, comparing Elizabeth to a gypsy moth. A fight ensues though when Elizabeth declares she'll Ritsuka from Serenity, Raikou, and Kiyohime.

Unfortunately for the group, the trio keeps getting up no matter how many times they’re defeated. Fortunately, Ibaraki blinds them with Great Grudge of Rashoumon, then places a decoy of Ritsuka (made by Nitocris) near some lava to drive them away. As she planned, Raikou, Serenity, and Kiyohime go after the decoy into the lava, but to her horror, they all swim harmlessly in it.

Final Singularity: Solomon

Minamoto-no-Raikou is among the "special event" Servants to assist Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.[13]

Summer Event: Dead Heat Summer Race!

Disgusted at the thought of Chaldea falling into depravity in the summer, Raikou transforms herself using her ancestor's divine power to punish all who disregard public decency.  Calling herself the Prefect of Public Decency, she has become a Lancer and now inexplicitly wears a sailor uniform. She then goes out to patrol for any who'd disrupt public decency when she sees a flyer for Ishtar's race. Seeing Ishtar's name, Raikou recalls the goddess' outfit and remarks how decency is being flouted. She then sees Xuanzang Sanzang's outfit, and finding it an affront to public decency, demands to know she is wearing a swimsuit indoors. Sanzang insists it's a manifestation of how good it felt to swim and cool off in the rivers during her journey to Tianzhu, though its lack of skin cover never crossed her mind. She then points out how Raikou's outfit shows her body, but Raikou is oblivious and considers it the emblem of purity. She also denies she is wearing a swimsuit underneath. She then demands Sanzang follow her if she wishes to reform, believing Buddha would want it as well. Sanzang agrees to join her, which overjoys Raikou that the monk will reform by helping her to preserve public decency. Raikou then makes Sanzang her partner in Ishtar's race, believing it to be the source of this summer's "indecency".

At the racetrack, Raikou thanks Ritsuka for coming to cheer her on.  Though embarrassed about competing in a race, considering more Kintoki's forte, Ritsuka's cheering is a tremendous motivation for her. She swears not to disappoint them and to punish every affront to public decency. Ishtar then shows everyone the ritual tools, which are key to erasing the Singularity, and indicates a team is a legit participant. They’re designed to integrate into the vehicles, and any vehicle trying to race without them is automatically disqualified. After commentary on each team from Ishtar, the race begins.

A group of thugs soon appear before the racers. After the thugs are defeated, their leader, Atalanta, arrives. She considers the thugs to be her children to the racers’ confusion. Calling the wasteland the Atalanta Plains, she tells the racers that its roads lead to where she and her children planted Seed Apples. They are essential to her children‘s future, so she cannot permit them to be destroyed in the race. Everyone ignores her but soon learns she planted land mines to protect the seed apples. Atalanta is eventually defeated, and the racers move on to the next area.

The race brings everyone to an active volcano, where they meet Boudica at its crater. She offers to cook them something, only to turn hostile. Her hostility is due to what happened to Britannia and the fact she doesn’t have a playable swimsuit version this year despite modeling in one last year. She has become an Avenger, believing she must utterly break the racers’ spirits to protect her homeland. She will do so through a game of chicken to the mouth of the volcano, setting it up so the racers can’t cross the volcano until they beat her. The racers accept her challenge. Raikou and Sanzang nearly catch up to Nero Claudius and Artoria Alter when a volcanic bomb lands and spooks their horses. They then proceed to destroy the rocks still raining from the volcano, with Raikou saying she'll give potential offenders a chance to redeem themselves during its duration.

Eventually, the racers arrive at a river. Penthesilea appears and explains the more beautiful they are, the faster they will go. She introduces them to the judges: Mister B, who judges their personal beauty, and Leonardo da Vinci, who judges their vehicles’ beauty. Raikou considers Mister B to be a metal demon who tempts people away from the path of decency. Mister B gives her and Sanzang a middling review in beauty, slowing them down like all the others except for Frankenstein and Helena Blavatsky. He then tries to catch up to Frankenstein and Helena and check more of them out when the others stop and beat him up, revealing him to be Blackbeard in disguise.

The racers soon enter the fourth area, which has breast-shaped hills. Artemis and her copies fire upon them, warning they cannot go through Artemis Valley as they please. She will allow them to pass if they can find the real Orion among his copies and return him to her. Raikou, seeing the Orions' shameless flirtations, considers it the worst indecency she's seen so far. She understands the Orions are at fault and removes her uniform to expose the bikini underneath. Sensing a new set of large breasts, the Orions start fluttering toward Raikou. Some flutter toward Sanzang for the same reason, though she thinks it's because of her virtue. Eventually, the team captures all the Orions and tries bringing them to Artemis. But the Artemises attack them for treating her darlings harshly. Raikou and Sanzang defeat them, leaving only one. Orion, now terrified of Raikou, jumps into the arms of Artemis, who's overjoyed that he's the real one. Raikou hears Orion admit he had gotten bored of Artemis's chest and gets upset at the thought of either Ritsuka or Kintoki telling her that they're bored of her. She, therefore, threatens to punish Orion more. Sanzang then gives the head Sun Wukong wore to Artemis to put on Orion, even teaching her the words that make it painfully tighten. But later at a pit stop, she admits to Raikou it is an imitation of the one Lady Kannon gave her, so it doesn't last long.

The racers reach the final area, a bridge over a large ravine, with the Ishtar Temple at the finish line. With victory on the line, Raikou and Sanzang encourage their steeds to go even faster. However, everyone is sent plummeting when someone cuts down the bridge.

Summer Event: Death Jail Summer Escape

The racers find themselves at the bottom of the ravine. They’re attacked by the Hessian Lobo security system, which overwhelms them. Medb then arrives and arrests the racers for placing weird textures on her land without permission. The racers fall unconscious and wake up in Medb’s prison. They find out that their powers are negated within prison. Medb tells the racers that she locked their vehicles up somewhere outside the prison after sensing a strange power from them. The racers are then brought to their cells, where they soon meet Ishtar’s avatars. They then encounter Carmilla working as a prison guard. Carmilla determines they're too weak to escape and opens their cells.

In the courtyard, the racers meet Gorgon, who's only brought out of solitary confinement for exercise. She agrees to tell them about the prison if they help with her exercise. However, the fight is soon interrupted by Florence Nightingale, who leaves after Gorgon says none of them are injured. Raikou deduces Gorgon is a projection of her real self inside her cell. Gorgon confirms this then reveals it's impossible to destroy the prison’s barrier from either the outside or the inside. However, the racers can take advantage of Medb’s overconfidence in her Prison Field to find blind spots to escape. Carmilla then brings the racers back to their cells.

The next day, the racers still haven’t found an escape route. They see Quetzalcoatl training other prisoners to be luchadors After some sparring, the racers are sent back to their cells. They then follow Ritsuka’s advice to dig their way out of the prison.

However, the racers' tunnels all converge onto Gorgon's cell, where she is chained there by divine steel. Gorgon asks the racers to stop Nightingale from spraying her with reptile sanitizer. But the racers remind her that they were never friends and that she only used them to vent her frustrations. Gorgon replies that she'll help them if they defeat Nightingale. After Nightingale is defeated, Nero Claudius determines they can use Gorgon’s acid to clear any obstacles that bar them while digging. Since they had a deal, Gorgon spews acid into special containers for each team.

Unfortunately, while digging, they discover the Prison Field extends underground. They return to Gorgon's cell, who seems to be enjoying their predicament. After venting their frustrations, the racers realize they have no choice but to kill Medb to disable the Prison Field. Gorgon reveals there was another prisoner who tried escaping by killing Medb. She defeated them and revealed she has a conceptual weakness to projectile cheese. But Medb is always protected by her warriors. Gorgon reveals Medb always takes a shower in her warden’s office at the same time every day. James Moriarty, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla point out they need someone intelligent as them and Charles Babbage, who also knows the prison’s layout if they want to successfully snipe Medb from outside her bathroom window. Gorgon reveals there is a prisoner who knows everything about the prison, despite being in solitary confinement. She then gives the racers general directions to that person's cell.

They dig into the prisoner’s cell, who turns to be Enkidu in tight restraints. Raikou asks them what they did to warrant their lengthy prison sentence and to be placed in tight restraints. Enkidu answers Medb arrested them on a trumped-up charge that they're a criminal mastermind. Raikou finds that even if Enkidu committed crimes, they cannot reform if they're bound as they are. Unable to overlook this, she then cuts Enkidu's restraints. Now free, Enkidu has the racers spar with them to see if they’re fully functional. Enkidu afterward then agrees to provide the racers with the necessary calculations. Carmilla arrives to feed them, and attacks everyone after seeing Enkidu unrestrained. After defeating Carmilla, Enkidu, Babbage, Edison, and Tesla make blueprints for their cheese-apult.

After building it with the materials Ritsuka provided, the racers use the cheese-apult to assassinate Medb while she’s in the shower. However, Medb kicks the cheese away thanks to training her body to automatically react to incoming cheese. Helena considers the Medb in this Singularity to be a little different from the usual Medb, almost as if she was optimized to protect her land. But it's also possible any Celtic woman can pull off what Medb just did if she trained hard enough. Enkidu reveals there is another way to remove the Prison Field, one only they know of. They reveal the control device for the Prison Field is a stone above the ground. The racers soon realize it’s in the statue of Medb in the courtyard. Enkidu then reveals there is a prisoner who is master of disguise that the racers can use to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field. The racers then dig their way to the prisoner’s cell.

They arrive in the prisoner's cell, only to find Carmilla there to their shock. They fight her, but in the midst of it, she turns into Nightingale. After being defeated, she reveals herself to be Yan Qing in disguise. He agrees to disguise himself as Medb to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field in exchange for fighting him. Raikou determines from his crude language, his lack of a shirt, and tattoos that he is a delinquent. She fears what would happen if either Ritsuka or Kintoki were to follow his lifestyle. She, therefore, has Yan Qing sit in the corner and lectures him until he's sore. Afterward, Yan Qing (disguised as Med) gets Quetzalcoatl to disable the barrier underground, allowing the racers to reach their vehicles in the warehouse.

The racers escape to the outside, where Medb and Quetzalcoatl confront them. Medb deflects shots from X's cheese blaster and decides to execute the racers, accusing them of covering Connacht with textures of another place. The racers defeat Medb and Quetzalcoatl, then return to the race once they disappear.

After the race, however, an enormous storm moves toward the track as if it has a will of its own. Ishtar reveals this was her plan. Unbeknownst to the racers, their vehicles’ tires were carving magical energy into the Venus textures she placed on the land. She then reveals her temple to be a giant ATM called the Ishtar Quantum Power System. The racers confront her when the relics she had them install in their vehicle are suddenly removed. The relics converge at the Ishtar QPS, which gathers the magical energy expended in the race. At the same time, the relics were storing the heat created by the friction of the racers’ tires running across the Venus textures for each relic to reach an excited state. The purpose of all this was for Ishtar to create a new Gugalanna. After using the relics and the Ishtar QPS to do so, she declares she can use him to destroy the Singularity. Da Vinci points that would work, but it’d also destroy Connacht. The racers then fight Ishtar and Gugalanna before he’s completely formed, but they struggle against him. Quetzalcoatl then arrives to attack Gugalanna, revealing the her that disappeared before was Yan Qing in disguise. After she destroys Gugalanna, the racers and the race’s administrative staff get their picture taken by Georgios.

If Raikou and Sanzang won, Raikou is thankful Ishtar's scheme failed, fearing Chaldea would have lost any sense of decency if it succeeded. She thanks Sanzang for her help, saying that she has reformed admirably. She then takes off her uniform. Sanzang is confused by this and asks what happened to defending Chaldea's public decency. Raikou answers that their duty will continue until summer is over, but for now, she believes they deserve a break. She then expresses her intent to show off her swimsuit to Ritsuka and Kintoki. Sanzang is concerned, though, that Raikou's swimsuit figure will disturb public decency if she goes out into public. Raikou says they can look the other way since they're on break. Sanzang demands to know Raikou's true reason for becoming the Shadow Prefect. Raikou confesses she only wanted to keep "insects" away from her "children". She then goes out into the hallway with Sanzang unable to stop her.

Event: Oni Pagoda Festival

Though Leonardo da Vinci was able to convince Raikou not to lead the expedition, she couldn't get her not to join. Raikou makes her presence known when she cuts Shuten's alcoholic fog projection and tells Tomoe Gozen that it's pointless to explain the rules of warfare to Oni and the only way to handle them is to kill them. When the fog reforms, she tells Shuten that she thought she could serve a purpose, if only as a sacrificial pawn. But now, she has no choice but to execute her for wreaking havoc outside Chaldea. Finally, being able to do so makes Raikou gleeful that her patience has been rewarded. She tries to pretend, though, that she isn't rejoicing the fact she has a proper reason to kill Shuten. Shuten warns the group that they'll get steadily more drunk with every floor they ascend. Raikou decides not to heed her warning and climbs the tower itself to kill her and Ibaraki. However, she soon falls back onto the ground because Shuten designed the tower to cause extreme intoxication if someone tries to reach the top without using the stairs. Shuten also designed it to be particularly effective against Raikou and Kintoki.

Later, through sheer perseverance and bloodlust to kill oni, Raikou climbs the tower up to at least past the 90th floor. She escapes, however, with Ritsuka, on Tomoe's instruction.

Imaginary Scramble

When the Nautilus crew reach the second area of the Imaginary Trench, Ritsuka summons Raikou in accordance with Captain Nemo's request for a Servant with a large solid projectile Noble Phantasm to act as anti-ship artillery. The situation is explained to her, and she reassures the crew that she will use her Noble Phantasm, providing them torpedoes of a sort. She is also added to the recon team per Scáthach-Skadi's recommendation as her powers can increase the size and scope of the crew's recon capabilities. But to Osakabehime's dismay, that doesn't mean she is off recon duty as the crew needs as much recon as possible. They also need someone to interpret the results of Raikou's scans.[14] Nemo also has Raikou investigate on his behalf for anything suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously.[15]

Everyone is later called to the bridge. Nemo enters and informs everyone that he called to congratulate them on passing their 150 hour time limit. To commemorate their hard work, he and Skadi have prepared a feast. Everyone heads to the mess hall for the feast, though Yang Guifei thought she heard something.[16]

Unfortunately, the feast is interrupted when the ship is attacked. Nemo finds it strange the enemy found them as he was certain the ship was running silently. At his behest, the combat team heads out and eliminates the enemy. The feast resumes afterward with Raikou singing karaoke, complete with a karaoke machine.[16] In truth, though, the song was prerecorded and was a ploy to see if anyone in attendance would act suspiciously. The song used a polar opposite waveform to ensure it cancelled out before it got outside to prove whether or not sound was relevant to triggering the previous attack. If the ship were to be attacked at the time, it’d mean the sound made was irrelevant and give more credence to the possibility someone among the crew is remotely controlling the enemy. However, nothing happen during Raikou's whole karaoke session.[15]

Nearing the second area's exit, Nemo privately reveals to Ritsuka that Raikou has been investigating for him. Raikou reports she had found nothing out of the ordinary during the previous from anything or anyone, including Guifei and Van Gogh. There also weren’t any loud noises produced in or by the Nautilus prior to the attacks. Nemo reveals Guifei said she had heard a strange noise she couldn’t pinpoint before the attack, and if true it means the enemy has begun searching for the Nautilus. It also suggests the enemy is learning or evolving, so for now the crew is cleared of any suspicion. Nemo and Raikou then tell Ritsuka the truth of the latter’s karaoke session, after which Raikou leaves to eliminate the enemies barring the Nautilus from the next area.[15]

While Raikou is eliminating enemy ships (which aren’t even retaliating), though, the Nautilus is ambushed by another enemy ship. Van Gogh paints a platform for Raikou to stand on and the combat team is sent out to protect her while she destroys enemy ships. As they do, the Nautilus slowly reverses, luring the enemy ship away from Raikou and the combat team. Once the Nautilus is far enough away from them, Nemo uses his Noble Phantasm to destroy the enemy ship at point-blank range once the Nautilus is far enough from Raikou and the combat team. Unfortunately, the combat team’s platform suddenly falls apart and the shockwave from the Nautilus Noble Phantasm blasts them away. Communication with them is lost, and worse, they had cut their lifelines in preparation for the attack so now they are adrift. Fortunately, they’re rescued by the recently summoned Meltryllis. Afterward, however, everyone witnesses Gogh suddenly gnawing on her own arm. She is taken to the infirmary, where she eventually calms down. Her outburst was apparently the result of her being confused about what had happened.[15]

The crew soon enters the third area, whereupon they’re attacked by a swarm of smaller enemies accompanied by a giant Enemy Ship. The swarm is eliminated when the giant Enemy Ship destroys a landmass with an energy beam, the aftershock of which rocks the Nautilus as if to dissuade the crew from going any further. Nevertheless, the Nautilus proceeds further in.[17]

Sometime later, the crew destroys the giant Enemy Ship—Enemy Ship Alpha. But Alpha makes a loud sound as it dies, which fatally wounds Guifei as a result of her sensitive hearing and having weakened her own Spirit Origin when she cloned herself earlier. Desperate to save Guifei, Van Gogh activates De Sterrennacht, explaining that it deifies any Foreigners who look upon it while driving everyone else insane. She therefore implores the latter to close their eyes when a white flash occurs.[18]

The deification restores Guifei’s Spirit Origin, but as a side effect, her Spirit Origin changed to her third Ascension. Van Gogh is glad the deification didn’t go any further, otherwise Guifei wouldn’t be a Servant. However, it seems the Ascension had affected Guifei’s personality as she offers to serve everyone and her beloved emperor for giving her a second chance at life. She notices the change and changes back to her second Ascension, restoring her original personality.[18]

Van Gogh concludes her Noble Phantasm is too dangerous, knowing with a single mistake every Foreigner can become a threat to humanity. She admonishes herself as a pathetic excuse for a Heroic Spirit and believes she has no right to serve Ritsuka. Ritsuka, Nemo, and Guifei, however, seemingly convince her of her own self-worth and wish for her to stay. Van Gogh is moved by their kindness and promises to do everything to help.[18]

In the fourth and final area, the Nautilus is hit by repeat stealth attacks, eventually forcing the crew to retreat to a calmer area worse the exit is blocked. The stress of the situation is getting to Nemo, and he decides he needs to be alone, so Ritsuka tells everyone to take a break.[19]

Raikou later feels something is amiss and goes to protect Ritsuka and Frankenstein safe. But then, monsters suddenly appear. Raikou and Frankenstein slay them, only for more to appear. Raikou prepares to carve a path to the bridge, but Ritsuka points out the blood on the floor leads to the cargo hold. The three thus cut their way to the cargo hold.[20]

There they find Nemo and Van Gogh, who is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds and whose blood the monsters are spawning from. Ritsuka, Raikou, and Frankenstein quickly subdue Van Gogh. Nurse is then called in to treat her wounds. Ritsuka, Raikou, and Frankenstein leave for the bridge, cutting down any monster in their way.[20]

They arrive and find Mash, Osakabehime, Guifei, and the Marines are all safe. But calls for reinforcements from all over the ship indicate the monsters are everywhere. Ritsuka, Raikou, and Frankenstein head out to slay the monsters.[20]

After the monsters are slain, everyone gathers on the bridge. The crew argues about Van Gogh’s innocence since her blood was used to summon monsters and she is most likely the Foreigner who created the spatial gaps from which the enemy launched multiple stealth attacks against the Nautilus. Professor confirms the gaps theory is true with a magecraft function she built with Guifei and Osakabehime. They also modified the ship’s weapon systems so they can now eliminate the enemies hiding within the gaps.[20]

Raikou wants to test it out immediately, but Meltryllis thinks they should take care of their internal dispute first. Raikou asserts Van Gogh is innocent, for there is no evidence that says otherwise. The Marines refuse to believe Van Gogh is innocent, though, and start a mutiny calling for her execution. The conflict overloads Nemo into an unresponsive state.[20]

Xiang Yu then suddenly enters the room and uses his Noble Phantasm at minimum power to knock out the thirteen Marines; he is awake because the incident hadn’t been resolved by now like he calculated. Ritsuka remembers there are only supposed to be twelve Marines and deduces the impostor is Oei, prompting the latter to remove her disguise.[20]

Oei confesses she is responsible for nearly every problem the crew has encountered, all because she wanted to stay in the Imaginary Number Sea, calling it a painter’s dream come true. She had knocked out her father when he disagreed and found a way to stowaway on the Nautilus. She has no loyalty toward the Outer Gods and only wants to stay here and paint all she can, so she requests Ritsuka to keep the Nautilus here for the next 200 years or so. Ritsuka refuses, leading to a battle between Oei and the crew.[20]

Pushed back, Oei confesses she came to the Imaginary Number Sea because a voice from its deepest depths was calling to her. She and Guifei start charging their Noble Phantasms when Van Gogh (she recently regained consciousness from an earlier battle with Ritsuka, Frankenstein, and Raikou) enters the room. Oei realizes Van Gogh is the one who called her, but she realizes she isn’t Vincent Van Gogh. She tries to ask for her true identity, but Meltryllis knocks her out.[20]

Realizing what Oei said was true, Van Gogh asks Ritsuka if they know her Heroic Spirit’s true identity. Suddenly the Marines all start saying Clytie, a name Nemo has been keeping to himself, repeatedly. Van Gogh recognizes the name and turns into her third Ascension. But even after hearing that, she still can’t help but think of herself as Van Gogh, nor can she escape his memories. She therefore intends to die somewhere deep and far away so she will not bring trouble to everyone and teleports away. Everyone agrees with Ritsuka they need to find her[20]

Nemo later recovers and everyone discusses Van Gogh’s true identity. Nemo deduces she is Clytie (Apollo’s former Oceanid lover) implanted with Vincent van Gogh’s memories. Skadi realizes the Outer Gods always intended for Van Gogh to go insane and theorizes that they seek to use Imaginary Number Space as an outpost to invade modern-day Earth. For this reason, they summoned Van Gogh to Imaginary Number Space and, per their orders, called Oei and waited for the crew. She was also ordered to create a base and recruit and deify Chaldea’s Foreigners.[20]

In answering Van Gogh’s call, Oei became amendable to the Outer Gods’ desires and, per their plans, she stowed away in the Nautilus and transformed Imaginary Number Space into a sea. If she wasn’t stopped, it is likely she would’ve succumbed to madness completely and painted a temple for the Outer Gods, which would serve as their outpost. Skadi theorizes the Outer Gods planned on having Van Gogh use her Noble Phantasm to deify the other Foreigners once the temple was complete through which they meant to descend upon Earth.[20]

However, Skadi believes Van Gogh had no desire to betray the crew, which is why the Outer Gods fused her with Clytie. She concludes from Vincent’s history that he committed suicide because he learned his painting Starry Night had inadvertently invited an Outer God into their world and he’d rather die than fall under the Outer Gods’ influence. His absolute refusal to obey them obviously caused a conundrum for the Outer Gods since they desired his Noble Phantasm above all others, so they created their own Heroic Spirit by implanting Clytie with Vincent’s memories and talent. Clytie’s refusal to end her life would conflict with Vincent’s unconscious need to commit suicide and eventually Van Gogh drive to madness and use her Noble Phantasm without compunction.[20]

Meltryllis suggests they honor Van Gogh’s wish and kill her since she cannot kill herself, seeing the fact she abandoned the only people who could do that as proof her madness has reached its peak. Van Gogh is only a step away from initiating her final, most dangerous plan, so if the crew wants to save her from that fate, they need a plan that’s just, kind, wise, and smart. Everyone agrees to come up with a plan to save Van Gogh while stopping the Outer Gods. Xiang Yu confesses he calculated Van Gogh would separate herself from the others. The crew will reencounter Van Gogh in the current area, but Xiang Yu warns they’ll need to be prepared for fierce battles.[20]

The crew eventually located Van Gogh, but discover that her body had been mutated into a giant flower bud. Skadi theorizes it is the Outer Gods’ contingency plan in case Van Gogh failed to deify the other Foreigners with De Sterrennacht. Oei agrees to help the crew get through the flower’s shell and reveals that the spatial gaps actually work like a real Go board, meaning any area they surround becomes their territory. Therefore, if the crew can make the area Van Gogh is in their territory by capturing the four surrounding gaps, they can warp inside her.[21]

Nemo says they will capture the four gaps with as few people as possible. Once that is done, they will go inside the flower and rescue Van Gogh at its center. Afterward, they will use Raikou’s Noble Phantasm to destroy the flower from the inside. Skadi decides the rescue team will consist of Raikou, Meltryllis, and Frankenstein; Raikou will assume torpedo duties, Meltryllis will be the escort, and Frankenstein will rescue Van Gogh. As for who will capture the four points, she decides it will be Guifei, Osakabehime, herself, and Oei.[21]

All the sudden, Van Gogh lets out a screech that shakes the Nautilus and implores the crew to stay away, sending out Enemy Ships in order to force them. She knows everyone wants to save her, but she believes they shouldn’t, considering herself too dangerous and feels she has no right to be with them.[21]

She is no longer certain of who she is, wanting to die because she is Vincent, but refusing to die because she is Clytie. But none of that matters, for she only needs to follow the Outer Gods’ orders to use her Noble Phantasm to deify other Foreigners. Even if her mind self-destructs due to overload, she can still fulfill her main objective by engaging her core consciousness and letting her divine form bloom. She is glad her life has a purpose even if she cannot stand it or herself, and is certain Vincent and Clytie would feel the same way.[21]

To the crew’s surprise, though, half of the enemy warheads contain A-rank explosives while the other heals, and if they weren’t hitting at the same time, the ship would’ve sunk long ago. Nemo realizes it is the result of Van Gogh feeling conflicted over whether to give herself over to the Outer Gods’ influence or rid herself of their influence. As a Phantom Spirit himself, he can tell she is trying to fight their influence. Ritsuka suggests to Nemo since that they’re both Phantom Spirits, maybe his voice can get through to Van Gogh.[21]

With Guifei amplifying his voice so it reaches her, Nemo asks Van Gogh to give herself a name so she may gain a sense of self. He promises her that, no matter what name she choses she will not be abandoned and she will be rescued. After a moment, all enemy projectiles are fully converted into support resources. Van Gogh then addresses the Nautilus crew, declaring herself Clytie van Gogh, telling them if they can accept that name she’d be happy if they saved her.[21]

Van Gogh is eventually rescued from the flower, which Raikou destroys from the inside with her Noble Phantasm. The Evil God of Flowers (Van Gogh’s Outer God and the mastermind behind this whole incident) contacts the crew afterward. It accepts it lost due to lack of foresight, but it also claims the crew had refused their chance at the second-best outcome they could’ve hoped for: a peaceful, gentle destruction. It finds it a pity and bids the crew farewell.[22]

Guifei snatches the Grail Van Gogh just finished making. Raikou and Meltryllis try to stop her, but her flames keep them from approaching her, having carefully researched everyone so none of them could stop her at this precise moment. She then fills the bridge with a curse, which presumably prompts the Marines to suddenly grab Skadi, Osakabehime, and Meltryllis from behind; Meltryllis can't even liquify her body to escape for unknown reasons. Guifei had planned for this exact moment and decided now to make her move now that she is overflowing with eldritch power (the Outer Gods' power source), which the Outer Gods used to bug out the summoning system and connect directly to the Throne. Guifei then changes into her third Ascension to demonstrate her allegiance to the Outer Gods.[23]

Van Gogh believes her usage of De Sterrennacht had turned Guifei into the Outer Gods' ally. Guifei corrects her that she was always their ally, revealing she came to Imaginary Number Space because she was called. Van Gogh refuses to believe that as the Evil God of Flowers only had her call out to gods of the same alliance and of those only Hokusai had answered. Guifei reveals her emperor had vacated a spot in the Throne for her so she could be summoned from it. She then calls Ritsuka her emperor, putting them in a trance.

Unable to speak, Ritsuka is manipulated into commanding Guifei to bring forth depravity or destruction. Fortunately, Frankenstein destroys the good luck doll Guifei gave Ritsuka, allowing them to speak again. Ritsuka tries to rescind "their" command, but it is too late, as Guifei uses the Grail to hack the summoning system and summon Abigail Williams and Mysterious Heroine XX, though she could've sworn she summoned a third Servant. But believing the current number will suffice, she proceeds to infuse all present Foreigners with eldritch power, driving all of them (expect for Van Gogh) insane.

She declares that the Foreigners will now hold the Great Foreigner Festival Imaginary Number Sea Scramble Ritsuka "requested", a festival where they will vie for control of the Imaginary Number Sea, with the winner earning the right to rule over the next era on Earth. Ritsuka tries to tell they never asked for anything of that, but Meltryllis concludes Guifei had only pretended to be sane from the very beginning. Then, at Guifei's behest, the Foreigners leave the Nautilus to take the Imaginary Number Sea for themselves, except for Van Gogh as the eldritch power didn't render her insane, presumably because her link with her Outer God was severed when its terminal was physically destroyed.

Frankenstein destroys the dolls Guifei gave to the Marines and Baker returning them to normal. Skadi concludes they can stop the Foreigners' rampage by destroying the terminals feeding them eldritch power from the Outer Gods and then restrain them once they've come to their senses. She suggests Van Gogh use De Sterrennacht, believing it can be used to remove the Outer Gods' terminal from each Foreigner, thereby severing the link between the two. Van Gogh agrees to do it, wanting to be of more help now that she is free of the Evil God of Flowers' machinations.

Though she is sure the Foreigners will be fine once their madness is removed, Osakabehime asks what should be done about Guifei since it seemed her madness ran deep. Meltryllis and Raikou both want to kill her, but Ritsuka refuses to let that happen. Wu Zetian then addresses the crew, having been summoned with Abigail and XX but went unnoticed during the commotion. Mash thinks they might be able to return Guifei to her senses with Zetian as she is the grandmother of Emperor Xuanzong, Guifei's beloved emperor. Zetian agrees to help, and so the Nautilus crew sets out to stop the Foreigners.

The crew eventually succeed in restoring the Foreigners' sanity. Van Gogh uses the Grail to return Imaginary Number Space to its pre-tampered state, allowing the ship to finally return to Real Number Space. But the moment the Nautilus returns to Real Number Space, the entire voyage is revealed to have been a dream.[24]

Heian-kyō: Naraka Mandala

Raikou makes an appearance in the Heian-kyō Singularity.[25][26]

Interlude

The True Form of Ushi-Gozen: A Different Account (丑御前の御本地、異説, Ushi-Gozen no Gohonji, Isetsu?)

Ritsuka, Mash and Kintoki discuss about Raikou. Ritsuka then encounters Ushi-Gozen in a dream, and defeats her again.[27]

Abilities

She was considered the preeminent swordmaster of the Heian era and had no peers in terms of raw martial skill and ability. While Raikou is incredible at slaughtering armies and monsters in defense of the capital, she had never faced someone who might match or surpass her in skill because she was so much better than everyone else in her time. This leads to her defeat when forced into a one-on-one duel with an equally skilled swordswoman. She was abnormally talented in the arts of war from an early age, to the point that she describes her movements as if she were describing the weather, declaring that she "simply" pulled off masterful strokes faster than the eye can see. Musashi lampshades this, noting that what Raikou does is easier said than done.[28] Ibaraki-douji claims that Raikou is scared of Tawara Touta.[29]

In Ushi Gozen’s Valetine, that confirmed that black armor which she wore is a mould for the divine power into the shape of a person, maybe that’s the reason that she isn’t defined by Yamato Takeru and Minamoto-no-Tametomo as a Oni and a Demonic being which the part of Oni and Demonic being is mixed with Divinity.[30][31][32][33]

Combat

Raikou wields a katana called Doujigiri Yasutsuna. This weapon was made for the execution of criminals. A long blade understood to be the greatest of Japan's five most celebrated swords. Though it is considered to be the blade that lopped off Shuten-douji's head, it can not be confirmed as the Minamoto-no-Raikou summoned to Chaldea refuses to discuss the details of what happened on Mount Ooe.[34] She also uses a big longbow and arrows, along with her sword, and fires off a volley of arrows from the quiver at her side.

Raikou vs

Raikou vs Suzuka

Despite Suzuka Gozen having superior Agility than Minamoto-no-Raikou, Raikou is able to match her in close range thanks to her physical strength and skill. Suzuka attacks Raikou with her Flaming Wheel, however, Raikou was able to evade her attack thanks to having heard Suzuka's master calling her out telling her to do so. Raikou says that such a small flame may have caused some damage had it hit her directly, but it wouldn't have impared her movements. It wasn't until Suzuka activated Blessing of Wisdom that she managed to land a single blow on Raikou. Tamamo-no-Mae notes that Raikou is more skilled, and that Suzuka has been making up for it with her three swords and by constantly keeping on the move. She was basically holding through sheer perseverance.[7] Thanks to Suzuka's Trichiliocosm granting her "omniscient clairvoyance", she is able to reach a "different dimension" than that of her regular state. Despite being weakened, Suzuka Gozen was able to defeat Minamoto-no-Raikou with this Noble Phantasm thanks to Kazuhito forcibly activating it with a Command Spell. Suzuka states that had Raikou transformed into Ushi Gozen, she might have lost due to the difference in divine rank.[8]

Heian-kyo Alive Version

During the Heian-kyō Singularity, Raikou was alive.

Raikou was forced to fight Shikigami made artificially immortal by keeping their Spiritual Cores separate from their bodies just like the Heroic Spirit Swordmasters. Although during the Shimosa Subcategory Singularity they needed Miyamoto Musashi's extraordinary technique and Myoujingiri Muramasa to defeat them, Raikou is able to kill these shikigami thanks to Abe-no-Seimei's talismans and Medea Lily's enhancement Spells. However, Medea Lily states that seeing how she fights, she might have been fine without her spells.[26]

Abe-no-Seimei stated that Minamoto-no-Raikou, Watanabe-no-Tsuna, and Sakata Kintoki wouldn't be able to stop the powerful Hasshoujin Heroic Spirits while holding back. This is confirmed to be true during their fight against Saisetsu Tawara Touta‎ and Hyoubi Suzuka Gozen. The two Servants are able to overwhelm them with Hachiman Prayer and Heavenly Demon Rain while holding back themselves. After Medea Lily heals them and casts enhancement Spells on everyone, they fight them a second time. After fighting for a while, Tsuna and Raikou take advantage of their openings right before releasing their Noble Phantasms' True Names to deal a fatal blow. Raikou explains that since they have no lead-up to their final attacks by virtue of being alive, that was their only chance of victory. She claims that had they not been Heroic Spirits, empty shadows of their former selves, the battle would have ended very differently. It also means that the key to their victory lay in them having experienced their Noble Phantasms once already.[26]

Skills

Class Skills

  • Mad Enhancement (EX Rank): A Skill that strengthens one’s physical abilities in exchange for their sense of reason. In Raikou’s case, her reason is not lost, and her state of being remains as her original intellectual self. However, with the impurity of her Oni blood, that mentality became morally broken because of the manifestation of her maternal love that is so far as abnormal. (She would eliminate anyone and everyone for the sake of her beloved ones, and she would protect them fanatically.) While talking of proper love, she does not hold sight of social morals if it is for the sake of love, approving all kinds of deeds… that is to say, she is mentally ill. She draws a line from other Berserkers by not letting others be on the verge of truly perceiving that broken side of her. Fundamentally, persuading her, or making her correct her ways, is impossible.[2] Suzuka Gozen states that as expected of a Berserker, Raikou's strength is insane.[7]
  • Riding (A+ Rank): She is able to operate all vehicles and beasts freely except for Dragon Kinds. Being able to ride comes from Gozu Tennou, who is a god.[2]
  • Magic Resistance (D Rank): Nullifies Single-Action spells. A Magic Resistance of the same degree of an amulet that rejects Magical Energy. If she was in her original Class, she would possess B-rank Magic Resistance, but as a result of her attribute being changed, it has ranked down.[2]
  • Divinity (C Rank): Raikou was born as the heaven-sent child of Gozu Tennou, so she possesses the Divinity Skill.[2]

Personal Skills

  • Mystery-Slayer (A Rank): How she was declared the strongest Mystery Slayer of the Heian period becoming a Skill. Works with particular effectiveness as Anti-Mystery.[2] Because Raikou is a famous Mystery-Slayer, Kazuhito Sakagami notes that it is a terrible match up for Suzuka Gozen, as the daughter of a Heavenly Demon King.[8]

Noble Phantasm

.

Doujigiri Yasutsuna.

Raikou's Noble Phantasm is Ox-King Storm Call - The Inescapable Net of Heaven. Although Suzuka Gozen attempted to block this attack with Heavenly Demon Rain, right before Raikou delivered the main attack, Kazuhito Sakagami ordered Suzuka to switch to guarding.[7] Thanks to this, Suzuka was able to avoid any fatal injuries despite losing the clash of Noble Phantasms. Still, the damage she received was severe. Kazuhito states that the compatibility between their Noble Phantasms is bad.[8]

Raikou wields a katana called Doujigiri Yasutsuna. This weapon was made for the execution of criminals. A long blade understood to be the greatest of Japan's five most celebrated swords. Though it is considered to be the blade that lopped off Shuten-douji's head, it can not be confirmed as the Minamoto-no-Raikou summoned to Chaldea refuses to discuss the details of what happened on Mount Ooe.[34]

If summoned as a Rider, she would have her horse Kyōgoku as her Noble Phantasm.[35]

Forms and Alternate Versions

Swimsuit

Raikou heard of the extreme disruption of public morals on the southern island during the previous Summer. To ensure that this year's event do not turn out the same way, she offered her prayers to the Gozu-Tennou and forcefully changed her class. Though it is not the same as when she is in her rightful Saber class, the Lancer-class Servant Raikou has achieved a transformation where her Motherly power has been strengthened into a moderate, city-guarding disposition.[36]

"When Raikou-san becomes her rightful profession as a Saber, she becomes super serious. A super Public Morals Committee President."[36]

"If it's Lancer... hmm well, something like a Shadow Public Morals Committee President. In short―――"[36]

In short a sukeban (delinquent schoolgirl). Her Motherly power becoming temperate, Raikou, as the brilliant warrior protecting the city, cuts through the Summer![36]

Surprisingly this time, it appears that she does not possess the Mental Pollution Skill (self-reported).[36]

In order to manage the public morals, Raikou has transformed into the Shadow Public Morals Committee President. Her catchphrase is "Forbidden, forbidden, absolutely prohibited!" She has no interest in the outcome of the race opened by Ishtar, and is thinking of using the Summer Event as an opportunity to monitor its seemingly delinquent participants.[36]

Upon ascending to the third stage of her Saint Graph, the tension in her rises and she discards the sailor uniform. As a result, she becomes the number one cause of disruption in public morals, but... the person herself has absolutely no awareness. Or does she...?[36]

Towards the Master, she proclaims that "Even though it is Summer, you are not to drown yourself in liberal thoughts, am I clear?", though this is really just her acting out a Public Morals Committee President move.[36]

"But um President, it's, it's showing... The um... the slit in that skirt is rather revealing... Most importantly, under that sailor uniform, there's quite the swimsuit..."

"? Is something the matter, Master?"

"So she really is unaware!?"[36]

Development

Creation and Conception

Minamoto-no-Raikou was designed by Raita Honjou in Fate/Grand Order.[1][2] Her scenario writers are Hikaru Sakurai and Kinoko Nasu in Fate/Grand Order.[2]

Comment from Illustrator

"For Miss Raikou, I stuffed in plenty of components into her lovely self, such as making her style similar to a model that turned un-Japanese in appearance, making her outfit look erotic despite showing little skin exposure, making her have a maternal love that does not want any reward, making her show a small amount of signs of jealousy, etc. Although she has swung towards the maternal love aspect quite considerably since implementation, if you really have something for huge breasts, you will also love the motion of her breasts shaking in every single way. She is the Ace of Chaldea currently. Still, her massive Noble Phantasm is fun." (Raita Honjou)[2]

"When I received a request for Ms. Swimsuit Raikou, I wondered if it was okay? “Okay, I’m worried, because even notwithstanding that BODY under normal circumstances, it’ll become a serious matter if I undress her!! I don’t know if I should continue anymore!” Then, when I was having fun drawing her freely, it resulted in a finish like this. The highlight of her design is Sukeban Raikou from her Second Stage since I wanted to do a costume that has impact, but I wonder if I somewhat overdid it by having decided on a considerably aggressive choice? And, when I was nervously trying to propose her character sheet, I unexpectedly received the OK, and I was elated; I got them to grant all sorts of selfish requests of mine such as the yo-yo attacks and the submarine pitch for her Noble Phantasm direction, and there was nothing but gratitude from me! Thank you very much, truly!!" (Raita Honjou) (Swimsuit ver.)[6]
