Van Gogh (ヴァン・ゴッホ, Van Gohho?), Class Name Foreigner (フォーリナー, Fōrinā?), is a Foreigner-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in Fate/Grand Order.

Profile

Identity

While Van Gogh is the name displayed on the Saint Graph, her actual True Name is Clytie van Gogh (クリュティエ=ヴァン・ゴッホ, Kuryutie Van Gohho?) due to her status as a Composite Servant. The Foreigner Van Gogh is an illegal Saint Graph brought into existence in Imaginary Number Space somehow by the entity that forms the "Evil God of the Flowers". Its identity is a patchwork Heroic Spirit comprising Clytie from Greek mythos, the painter Vincent van Gogh's memories and artistic talent, and various things such as compatibility with Imaginary Number Space and the vanguard of the evil god itself.[1]

The composition of the spirit origin is as follows:[1]

Appearance

Ritsuka Fujimaru claims that Van Gogh looks more grown up and mature in her second Ascension. Her outift is also a little more feminine. Her skin also changes colors.[2]

Personality

Van Gogh's personality and body are mainly Clytie's. This is why her appearance mixes flowers and jellyfish as she undergoes Ascension, as well as why she dresses like she's in mourning in her second Ascension, which reflects the deep sadness and regret she constantly experiences. Her low self-esteem and flirtatious smile are likely due to her self-loathing after her own foolish actions cost her everything she loved. Perhaps she is so insistent that she is Van Gogh out of a desire to hide from the parts of her that are not Van Gogh.

Relationships

Captain Nemo
"Nemo-cha... Captain-sama? They’re really awesome, smart, reliable... But even so I can feel a sort of familiarity... I feel a bond from a far, far away world, or a similarity in our way of being..."[3]
The one who saved Gogh from an identity crisis during the "Imaginary Scramble" that because a Void Space phenomenon. Even without that, based on the similarities in being Phantom Spirits, roots in recent Europe and Greece, and an extremely strong blessing of the sea, a person with whom Gogh can feel close to based on many points in common.[1]
Katsushika Hokusai
"To think I’d meet Hokusai! And to think they’d be a woman! Ah, yes, I want to ask about that Saint Graph peculiarity! How a father and a daughter... I wish I could manifest together with Theo..."[3]
The artist Gogh was enamored of ukio-e in their previous life, and the reason why he had an admiration for the "country without shadows". An artist worth respecting, and a worthy rival with whom Gogh can compete as an equal... or at least, that's what Gogh thinks one-sidedly.[1]
Abigail Williams
"Abby-chan... That devotion is the real deal... That’s why everyone uses it... It’s always like that in every era. But, I don’t understand it. Protecting her innocent devotion. Confronting the filthiness and evil intentions of adults. I wonder which one is the desirable way of being for her..."[3]
Yang Guifei
"Yang Guifei-sama and Gogh are in the same class... No matter how much our shape and condition changes, I think that won’t change. I hope Yang Guifei-sama thinks the same..."[3]
Someone Gogh came to be involved with during the Void Space phenomenon "Imaginary Scramble".
"I want us to work together and help each other overcome the many dangers that are involved from beginning to end in being a Foreigner Saint Graph. Even if you don't remember. Even if you don't even understand."[1]
Mysterious Heroine XX
"XX-sama, right, yes. Being an adult woman is troublesome... From time to time, I’ll brew some coffee... Ehehe... We probably aren’t in gear..."[3]
Frankenstein
"“As fellow stitched monsters, let’s get along”, that’s what Fran-chan said. I was really happy... I’m also studying how to face my raison d’être. Hehe... Although it’s a bit incredible that she does things more at her pace than Gogh..."[3]
As a fellow "patchwork monster", someone with whom Gogh can speak without nervousness.[1]
Martha
A person whom Gogh had made a subject of their art in their previous life. For Gogh, who respects the beauty of labor, she who embodies the (fist-based) "active lifestyle" is a subject of high regard.[1]
Paris
A person accompanied by Apollo, the one whom the water spirit Clytie loved in her previous life. Gogh personally doesn't realy have any memories matching this, but after becoming self-aware of being Clytie, she is vaguely aware of it, and sometimes feels as if her heart aches.[1]

Role

Fate/Grand Order

Imaginary Scramble

Due to his painting Starry Night inadvertently inviting them into the real world, the Outer Gods sought to use Vincent van Gogh for their plans to invade Earth. Vincent refused to fall under their influence, though, and killed himself. Even as a Heroic Spirit, he would commit suicide to prevent himself from falling to the Outer Gods’ machinations.[4]

Vincent’s absolute refusal to obey them caused a conundrum for the Outer Gods since they desired his Noble Phantasm, De Sterrennacht, for their plans. To counteract this, the Evil God of Flowers created Van Gogh by implanting Clytie, the Oceanid ex-lover of Apollo, with Vincent’s artistic talent and memories. Clytie’s refusal to end her life would conflict with Vincent’s unconscious need to commit suicide. Through this internal conflict, the Evil God of Flowers sought to drive Van Gogh insane and lead her to use De Sterrennacht without compunction.[4]

Seeking to utilize it as an outpost for its invasion of Earth, the Evil God of Flowers summoned Van Gogh to Imaginary Number Space. Per her god’s orders, Van Gogh proceeded to call Katsushika Hokusai, whose god was allegedly allied with the Evil God of Flowers, and then waited for Chaldea, who began their test run of the Nautilus. She was also ordered to use De Sterrennacht to recruit and deify Chaldea’s Foreigners once Hokusai painted a temple dedicated to the Outer Gods to amass an army for the Outer Gods to invade Earth with.[4]

Chaldea’s first encounter with Van Gogh is when Yang Guifei hears her banging on the Nautilus from the outside, warning about incoming enemies. Mash, Scáthach Skadi, and Osakabehime rescue her and bring her aboard where she introduces herself to everyone.[5]

Five hours pass without any further attacks, and in that time, Van Gogh is given a medical examination by Nemo Nurse. Ritsuka conversed with her and found her accounts matched those of the famed artist, though she avoided all subjects regarding her gender. She also provided the Nautilus crew with valuable information about Imaginary Numbers Space.[5]

The ship later comes under attack again when Imaginary Number Sea monsters are drawn to the sound of an explosion created when a allegedly drunk Mash pushed a so-called self-destruct switch Skadi found. Van Gogh contracts with Ritsuka and joins Skadi and Guifei in repelling them.[5]

After achieving victory, the crew captures the runaway Osakabehime, who ran away because she realized Skadi intended to shoot her out of a torpedo tube for reconnaisance purposes. Skadi explains that it is too dangerous to use sonar to locate enemies as they’re attracted to sound, so she proposes sending Osakabehime out and having her use the divination she uses to prepare her Noble Phantasm to detect enemies instead. Osakabehime is convinced by Ritsuka to follow Skadi’s plan. Captain Nemo assigns her, Guifei, and Van Gogh to eliminate any enemies she detects as they progress through the trench.[5]

The conversation then turns to how they have very little resources; food, magical energy, and materials for repairs. Van Gogh suggests eating the monsters for food and magical energy like she did while adrift. Her words turn out to be true following a battle, so it’s decided the combat team will double as a resource provisional team. Then, tying monster entrails to her to act as a lifeline, Osakabehime is launched.[5]

Osakabehime later detects a monster larger than the Nautilus that Nemo dubs an enemy ship. The combat team is sent out to prevent it from reaching the Nautilus.[6]

Unfortunately, they're soon become overwhelmed. Ritsuka calls for a retreat, but the lifelines are snagged. Worse, Guifei hears reinforcements coming. Fortunately, Van Gogh uses her Noble Phantasm to rescue the combat team, allowing the Nautilus to ram on through. None of the combat team save Van Gogh seem to remember how they were rescued.[6]

Van Gogh later catches Guifei trying to eavesdrop on a private conversation between Ritsuka, Mash, and Nemo. Guifei leaves reassuring Van Gogh that as a fellow Foreigner she will always be on her side.[7]

Later, after Minamoto-no-Raikou destroys an Enemy Ship with her Noble Phantasm inscribed with runes to prevent spatial vibration, Ritsuka gives Van Gogh a tour of the Nautilus. Van Gogh undergoes Ascension during this time when the ship is attacked again. At Nemo’s command, the combat team goes out to eliminate the enemy as quietly as possible.[2]

After the battle, the injured Servants are treated at the infirmary. However, Nurse wants Van Gogh to stay so she may study the latter’s Ascension, concerned that it may have adverse effects. Van Gogh gives her consent to be studied, so Nurse leaves to get Professor’s assistance. Van Gogh is eventually released from the infirmary, and she and Ritsuka have an all-night painting session.[2]

Everyone is later called to the bridge. Van Gogh has returned to her first Ascension, having done so because it requires less magical energy and is less depressing. Nemo enters and informs everyone that he called to congratulate them on passing their 150 hour time limit. To commemorate their hard work, he and Skadi have prepared a feast. Everyone heads to the mess hall for the feast, though Guifei thought she heard something.[8]

Unfortunately, the feast is interrupted when the ship is attacked. Nemo finds it strange the enemy found them as he was certain the ship was running silently. At his behest, the combat team heads out and eliminates the enemy before resuming the feast.[8]

Later, Raikou eliminates enemy ships (which aren’t even retaliating) barring the Nautilus from the next area. But then Guifei hears that strange sound again and warns an ambush is coming. Nemo orders the combat team to be ready to deploy when Osakabehime reports that the ambusher is another enemy ship.[9]

Nemo asks Professor to tell Raikou to switch targets to the new enemy ship, but Professor refuses as recalculating the homing spell inscribed on Raikou’s Noble Phantasm would take too long. Nemo thinks they may have no choice but to use the Nautilus Noble Phantasm, even with Raikou still out there.[9]

Van Gogh changes into her second Ascension and offers to paint a platform where Raikou is currently standing so she can continue fighting. While she does, the Nautilus can slowly reverse, luring the enemy ship targeting it away from Raikou so Nemo can use his Noble Phantasm to destroy it safely. Nemo agrees to Van Gogh’s plan and orders the combat team to protect Raikou while she focuses on destroying the enemy ships from Van Gogh’s platform. He will use his Noble Phantasm to eliminate the enemy ship at point-blank range once the Nautilus is far enough from Raikou and the combat team. The combat team then heads out.[9]

Unfortunately, while the plan does succeed, the combat team’s platform suddenly falls apart and the shockwave from the Nautilus Noble Phantasm blasts them away. Communication with them is lost, and worse, they had cut their lifelines in preparation for the attack so now they are adrift. Fortunately, they're rescued by the recently summoned Meltryllis. Afterward, however, everyone witnesses Gogh suddenly gnawing on her own arm. She is taken to the infirmary, where she eventually calms down. Her outburst was apparently the result of her being confused about what had happened.[9]

Van Gogh is later assigned to serve as an advisor. The crew then soon enters the third area whereupon they’re attacked by a swarm of smaller enemies accompanied by a giant Enemy Ship. The swarm is eliminated when the giant Enemy Ship destroys a landmass with an energy beam, the aftershock of which rocks the Nautilus as if to dissuade the crew from going any further. Nevertheless, the Nautilus proceeds further in.[10]

Sometime later, following many more battles, the crew encounters the giant Enemy Ship again. They avoid it without incident, but they’re ambushed from behind.[11]

After the ambush is dealt with, outside the bridge, Van Gogh suggests attacking the large Enemy Ship point-blank, thinking it can’t defend itself from such attacks. Thanks to Meltryllis, they can silently approach it and then damage it if they use a strong enough weapon at close-range. Osakabehime praises Van Gogh as a smart strategist on top of being a genius painter.[11]

Professor finds Van Gogh’s strategy feasible if the next Servant summoned has a powerful close-ranged Noble Phantasm, though she recommends collecting more resources first. Ritsuka and Mash return to the bridge to formulate a plan for acquiring resources. Van Gogh, meanwhile, thinks it’s wrong to call her a strategist as she is just good at entrapping people.[11]

After enough resources are collected, Ritsuka summons Frankenstein. She very quickly befriends Van Gogh and asks her if she is a monster too, much to the surprise of Mash and Nemo. She also agrees to model for Van Gogh.[12]

Later, the crew destroys the giant Enemy Ship—Enemy Ship Alpha. But Alpha makes a loud sound as it dies, which fatally wounds Guifei as a result of her sensitive hearing and having weakened her own Spirit Origin when she cloned herself earlier. Desperate to save Guifei, Van Gogh activates De Sterrennacht, explaining that it deifies any Foreigners who look upon it while driving everyone else insane. She therefore implores the latter to close their eyes when a white flash occurs.[13]

The deification restores Guifei’s Spirit Origin, but as a side effect, her Spirit Origin changed to her third Ascension. Van Gogh is glad the deification didn’t go any further, otherwise Guifei wouldn’t be a Servant. However, it seems the Ascension had affected Guifei’s personality as she offers to serve everyone and her beloved emperor for giving her a second chance at life. She notices the change and changes back to her second Ascension, restoring her original personality.[13]

Van Gogh concludes her Noble Phantasm is too dangerous, knowing with a single mistake every Foreigner can become a threat to humanity. She admonishes herself as a pathetic excuse for a Heroic Spirit and believes she has no right to serve Ritsuka. Ritsuka, Nemo, and Guifei, however, seemingly convince her of her own self-worth and wish for her to stay. Van Gogh is moved by their kindness and promises to do everything to help. In her thoughts, though, she sinisterly admits she lied.[13]

In the fourth and final area, the Nautilus is hit by repeat stealth attacks, eventually forcing the crew to retreat to a calmer area worse the exit is blocked. The stress of the situation is getting to Nemo, and he decides he needs to be alone, so Ritsuka tells everyone to take a break. Van Gogh asks Nemo if she can stay with him, but he declines and leaves the bridge.[14]

Van Gogh laments that she can’t do anything to repay Nemo for helping her and wonders if it’s because she isn’t really Van Gogh. But all her memories and knowledge say she is Van Gogh despite some inconsistencies. She can’t bring herself to believe it, though, because she lacks conviction and wonders what she can do to show it.[14]

Holing herself up in the cargo hold, Van Gogh continuously harms herself, her blood producing monsters. Nemo eventually finds her. She asks him to punish her, finding it strange she can’t die even though she is Van Gogh. But she is no longer certain of her own identity because if she isn’t actually Van Gogh, then the crew no longer needs her, especially when she just creates monsters. She therefore requests Nemo kill her, saying he’d be doing everyone else a favor. Before Nemo can even respond, Ritsuka bursts into the room with Raikou and Frankenstein to subdue Van Gogh for her own protection. Van Gogh collapses at the end of the ensuing battle and Nurse is then brought in to treat her wounds.[4]

Van Gogh eventually regains consciousness, whereupon she takes Nurse by surprise and ties up. Afterward, she enters the bridge, interrupting Oei (the one responsible for transforming Imaginary Numbers Space into a sea) and Guifei’s battle. Oei figures Van Gogh is the one who called her, but she realizes she isn’t the famed painter. She tries to ask for her true identity, but Meltryllis knocks her out.[4]

Van Gogh realizes what Oei said was true and asks Ritsuka if they know her Heroic Spirit’s true identity. Suddenly the Marines all start saying Clytie, a name Nemo has been keeping to himself, repeatedly. Van Gogh recognizes the name and turns into her third Ascension. But even after hearing that, she still can’t help but think of herself as Van Gogh, nor can she escape his memories. She therefore intends to die somewhere deep and far away so she will not bring trouble to everyone and teleports away.[4]

Per the Evil God of Flowers’ contingency plan in case she failed to deify the other Foreigners with De Sterrennacht, Van Gogh is transformed into a god in her right, becoming a giant flower bud.[15]

When the crew decides to rescue her from the flower, Van Gogh lets out a screech that shakes the Nautilus and implores the crew to stay away, sending out Enemy Ships in order to force them. She knows everyone wants to save her, but she believes they shouldn’t, considering herself too dangerous and feels she has no right to be with them.[15]

She is no longer certain of who she is, wanting to die because she is Vincent, but refusing to die because she is Clytie. But none of that matters, for she only needs to follow the Outer Gods’ orders to use her Noble Phantasm to deify other Foreigners. Even if her mind self-destructs due to overload, she can still fulfill her main objective by engaging her core consciousness and letting her divine form bloom. She is glad her life has a purpose even if she cannot stand it or herself, and is certain Vincent and Clytie would feel the same way.[15]

To the crew’s surprise, though, half of the enemy warheads contain A-rank explosives while the other heals, and if they weren’t hitting at the same time, the ship would’ve sunk long ago. Nemo realizes it is the result of Van Gogh feeling conflicted over whether to give herself over to the Outer Gods’ influence or rid herself of their influence. As a Phantom Spirit himself, he can tell she is trying to fight their influence. Ritsuka suggests to Nemo since that they’re both Phantom Spirits, maybe his voice can get through to Van Gogh.[15]

With Guifei amplifying his voice so it reaches her, Nemo asks Van Gogh to give herself a name so she may gain a sense of self. He promises her that, no matter what name she choses she will not be abandoned and she will be rescued. After a moment, all enemy projectiles are fully converted into support resources. Van Gogh then addresses the Nautilus crew, declaring herself Clytie van Gogh, telling them if they can accept that name she’d be happy if they saved her.[15]

Frankenstein and Meltryllis eventually make their way into the flower and Frankenstein rescues Van Gogh from the Evil God of Flowers’ clutches. But the Evil God of Flowers blocks their escape with its vines and cuts off communication with the Nautilus. Van Gogh decides to use her Noble Phantasm, reassuring Frankenstein it isn’t De Sterrennacht. However, she will need a whole minute to paint, so she asks Frankenstein to buy her time. Frankenstein does just that, fending off the Evil God of Flowers’ attempts to stop Van Gogh.[16]

With preparations complete, Van Gogh activates her other Noble Phantasm: Het Gele Huis. It empowers Frankenstein, allowing her to break free of the Outer God’s clutches with Skewered Plasma Blade. However, as a side effect of Van Gogh’s Noble Phantasm, both she and Frankenstein are cursed.[16]

Van Gogh and Frankenstein soon reunite with Meltryllis, and together they escape the flower, which Raikou destroys from the inside with her Noble Phantasm. The Evil God of Flowers accepts it lost due to lack of foresight, but it also claims the crew had refused their chance at the second-best outcome they could’ve hoped for: a peaceful, gentle destruction. It finds it a pity and bids the crew farewell.[16]

Now back on the Nautilus, Van Gogh begins the process of creating a Holy Grail, which will be used to return Imaginary Numbers Space to normal, so the Nautilus crew can leave, as well as prevent future invasions. While she is making it, though, she hears Mash presume the Noble Phantasm she used when Frankenstein rescued her and when she rescued the combat team was Le Père Tanguy. Van Gogh corrects her in that she cannot use that Noble Phantasm, though she can still paint the picture. Ritsuka remembers it was Guifei who first brought up Le Père Tanguy when Xiang Yu suddenly tries to kill her. He fails and is defeated by Guifei’s counterattack. He apologizes to Ritsuka that the rest is up to them and collapses.[17]

Guifei snatches the Grail Van Gogh just finished making. Raikou and Meltryllis try to stop her, but her flames keep them from approaching her, having carefully researched everyone so none of them could stop her at this precise moment. She then fills the bridge with a curse, which presumably prompts the Marines to suddenly grab Skadi, Osakabehime, and Meltryllis from behind; Meltryllis can’t even liquify her body to escape for unknown reasons. Guifei had planned for this exact moment and decided now to make her move now that she is overflowing with eldritch power (the Outer Gods’ power source), which the Outer Gods used to bug out the summoning system and connect directly to the Throne. Guifei then changes into her third Ascension to demonstrate her allegiance to the Outer Gods.[17]

Van Gogh believes her usage of De Sterrennacht had turned Guifei into the Outer Gods’ ally. Guifei corrects her that she was always their ally, revealing she came to Imaginary Number Space because she was called. Van Gogh refuses to believe that as the Evil God of Flowers only had her call out to gods of the same alliance and of those only Hokusai had answered. Guifei reveals her emperor had vacated a spot in the Throne for her so she could be summoned from it. She then calls Ritsuka her emperor, putting them in a trance.[17]

Unable to speak, Ritsuka is manipulated into commanding Guifei to bring forth depravity or destruction. Fortunately, Frankenstein destroys the good luck doll Guifei gave Ritsuka, allowing them to speak again. Ritsuka tries to rescind “their” command, but it is too late, as Guifei uses the Grail to hack the summoning system and summon Abigail Williams and Mysterious Heroine XX, though she could’ve sworn she summoned a third Servant. But believing the current number will suffice, she proceeds to infuse all present Foreigners with eldritch power, driving all of them (expect for Van Gogh) insane.[17]

She declares that the Foreigners will now hold the Great Foreigner Festival Imaginary Number Sea Scramble Ritsuka “requested”, a festival where they will vie for control of the Imaginary Number Sea, with the winner earning the right to rule over the next era on Earth. Ritsuka tries to tell they never asked for anything of that, but Meltryllis concludes Guifei had only pretended to be sane from the very beginning. Then, at Guifei’s behest, the Foreigners leave the Nautilus to take the Imaginary Number Sea for themselves, except for Van Gogh as the eldritch power didn’t render her insane, presumably because her link with her Outer God was severed when its terminal was physically destroyed.[17]

Frankenstein destroys the dolls Guifei gave to the Marines and Baker returning them to normal. Skadi concludes they can stop the Foreigners’ rampage by destroying the terminals feeding them eldritch power from the Outer Gods and then restrain them once they’ve come to their senses. She suggests Van Gogh use De Sterrennacht, believing it can be used to remove the Outer Gods’ terminal from each Foreigner, thereby severing the link between the two. Van Gogh agrees to do it, wanting to be of more help now that she is free of the Evil God of Flowers’ machinations.[17]

Though she is sure the Foreigners will be fine once their madness is removed, Osakabehime asks what should be done about Guifei since it seemed her madness ran deep. Meltryllis and Raikou both want to kill her, but Ritsuka refuses to let that happen. Wu Zetian then addresses the crew, having been summoned with Abigail and XX but went unnoticed during the commotion. Mash thinks they might be able to return Guifei to her senses with Zetian as she is the grandmother of Emperor Xuanzong, Guifei’s beloved emperor. Zetian agrees to help, and so the Nautilus crew sets out to stop the Foreigners.[17]

The Nautilus crew first goes to Abigail’s territory. Abigail thinks Van Gogh is mocking her childish drawings, like she thought Hokusai was, but Van Gogh insists Abigail has the makings of a great artist. Unfortunately, Van Gogh’s habit of laughing whenever she is nervous leads Abigail to believe she is indeed mocking her and a fight ensues. Van Gogh defeats her, returns her to normal with De Sterrennacht, and then becomes friends with her.[18]

Next, the crew goes to XX’s territory. Van Gogh defeats her and returns to normal with De Sterrennacht. She then offers to be friends with XX over their shared financial woes. XX confesses she actually lost all of her eldritch power some time ago, leading to the question of what drove her insane if it wasn’t eldritch power, especially since the Servantverse has nothing like the Outer Universe. Van Gogh jokes it was obviously the great evil god known as capitalism.[19]

The crew next goes to Hokusai’s territory. Hokusai confesses Oei agreed to let him borrow her Spirit Origin so he could get a turn at painting in Imaginary Number Space, leading Nemo to conclude Hokusai isn’t beholden to any eldritch power and merely wants to test his skills. Van Gogh, urged by Vincent’s feelings and memories, competes with Hokusai. She wins and uses De Sterrennacht to return Oei’s Spirit Origin to her, per Hokusai’s request. Oei immediately apologizes for the trouble she and her father caused. Van Gogh says she didn’t mind, considering it a dream come true, and invites Oei to her room later to discuss art.[20]

Finally, the crew comes to Guifei’s territory. Van Gogh defeats Guifei in combat, but unfortunately she cannot cleanse her without killing her because 90% of her Spirit Origin is occupied by the Outer God’s terminal. Guifei then starts to disappear, but it is stopped by a torpedo Raikou made with Nurse. Afterward, Zetian has Frankenstein briefly connect her to Van Gogh and borrows De Sterrennacht to return Guifei to her first Ascension by placing restrictions on her Spirit Origin. One of these restrictions is that she cannot marry her beloved emperor until she is mature enough for marriage. Zetian tells Ritsuka to use this opportunity to help Guifei grow as a person, believing one day they may be able to remove the Outer God’s terminal from her.[21]

Later, back on board the Nautilius, Van Gogh uses the Grail to return Imaginary Number Space to its pre-tampered state, allowing the ship to finally return to Real Number Space. However, the Nautilus’ entire voyage turns out to have been a dream. But Van Gogh reassures Ritsuka that doesn’t mean it’s meaningless and is certain what they gained from it will help them in reality. She will remain to keep everyone safe from the Reverse Side of the World to repay them for saving her. But giving Ritsuka one last handshake before they wake, she finds her tentacle unable to get loose.[22]

Ritsuka wakes up and looks under their bed sheets to find Van Gogh. She apologizes that she messed up as her being here probably means the prophetic dream everyone experienced has completely changed. Ritsuka doesn’t mind, though, and welcomes her to Chaldea. But seeing they’re both still sleepy, Ritsuka and Van Gogh go back to sleep.[22]

A Matter of Theme and ○○

[24]

Abilities

Van Gogh is a patchwork Heroic Spirit created by the Outer Gods by fusing Clytie with Vincent Van Gogh's talent and memories.[1][4] Clytie is a Divine Spirit that descends from the Titans, so her Saint Graph is a lot bigger than most summoned Heroic Spirits.[23] Due to this, her information makes 80% of the entity known as "Van Gogh".[1][23] Van Gogh's Spirit body circulates an unusual kind of Ether at very high densities. Servant blood is usually homeostatic Magical Energy meant to keep their Saint Graph working. However, Van Gogh's blood is one step removed from that. Her Spiritron composition and reactions are similar to a type of plant-based Elixir. Nemo Nurse compares her to a Heroic Spirit using a nonHuman body, like a special kind of Homunculus, for her vessel.[5] Thanks to having Clytie's body, Van Gogh also possesses protections pertaining to the sea that are at least as strong as Captain Nemo's.[5]

When Chaldea physically defeated her evil god's terminal and cut off her link, the Eldritch Power didn't take root. Due to this, Van Gogh didn't go mad when Yang Guifei used the Holy Grail to transform all the Foreigners into their final Ascension during the climax of Imaginary Scramble.[17]

Void Space

15% of Clytie Van Gogh's Saint Graph is a black box full of abilities related to Void Space.[1] These properties enable her to fight in ways beyond the bounds of most Magecraft, though only under certain conditions.[23] For example, she can move freely in void space without using Chaldea's compatibility chip or the swimsuits created by BB.[5] She can also create a Holy Grail with all the Magical Energy stored in the Nautilus by altering Void Space a little.[17] Furthermore, thanks to her unique spirit origin, she can eat Void Beingss raw and and digest them into Magical Energy.[5][6]

Combat

Captain Nemo claims that Van Gogh's combat skills aren't exactly her specialty.[10]

Due to her Curse of Sunflower skill, Van Gogh is destined to "bloom" as her Insanity and inner-conflict grows stronger. Each Ascension may represent a different stage of this process:

Skills

Class Skills

  • Insanity (C Rank): Uncertainty and terror. Deviation from harmony and the laws of nature. An abnormal thought process that goes as far as to affect the Weltanschauung of surrounding psyches.[1]
  • Item Construction (C- Rank): Thanks to her unique and exceptional artistic talent, she can quickly create works of art that affect the minds of viewers. However, the efficiency and quality of these works varies greatly by her state of mind.[1] In her second Ascension, she could draw a platform for Summer Minamoto-no-Raikou to stand on in Void Space.[9]
  • Divinity (B+ Rank): Her divinity as a vanguard of the higher beings that dwell within the outer realms is rather low, but the water nymph Clytie whose form she is based on is a direct descendant of the sea god Oceanus. As such, overall, she has inherited a high divinity. When an identity close to the water spirit is chosen, her divinity increases.[1] When Captain Nemo first met Van Gogh, he theorized that her high ranking divinity was caused by her status as a Foreigner, however, being descended from the Titans explains it much better.[4]
  • Curse of Sunflower (A Rank): A unique skill born from the story of the water nymph on whom she is based. She can never commit suicide, with "blooming" instead replacing suicide. Normally this is contained to the extent that some parts of her body are altered in shape, but in serious cases she may metamorphose into the very "Evil God of the Flowers" of her own design.[1] This skill is the reason the Outer Gods combined Clytie with Vincent van Gogh.[4] They wished to have a Servant capable of using Vincent's De Sterrennacht without killing themselves first.[4][23]

Personal Skills

  • Imaginary Number Arts (B+ Rank): A Skill combining the special characteristic of being born from Imaginary Numbers and the artistic talent of Vincent van Gogh who possessed a unique perspective on art. A technique of a unique theoretical system that is similar to the Magecraft of Imaginary Numbers yet different.[1] This skill allows her to recreate Van Gogh's pictures and interpret their symbolism to create magecraft phenomena.[23]
  • Channel Marker Soul (EX Rank): A Skill due to the "cobbled together" souls of painter and fairy resonating in sympathy over their shared "Insanity of dedicating one's everything" and from being altered by it.[1] It lets her drink madness in the form of Curses to gain new power and use it to guide others.[23]

Noble Phantasms

Clytie Van Gogh has two Noble Phantasms, each based on one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings.[23] The first one is named De Sterrennacht, a Reality Marble capable of swallowing the very World with its alternate depiction of reality.[6][13][4] Just like Abigail Williams, it opens a dangerous gate to another world, driving everyone who looks at it mad. The only known exception are other Foreigners, who can understand the higher beings from the Outer Universe. Thanks to their widened mental connection, their Saint Graphs are modified, transforming them into gods.[1][6][13][4] This "deification" state can be made to be temporary, but if her control is lost, it becomes an irreversible alteration. In this case, the target is will stop being a Servant.[1][13] Captain Nemo claims that Van Gogh could have used it to kill all the members of Chaldea aboard the Nautilus during Imaginary Scramble if she was evil.[13] While considered a Threat to Humanity,[13] it can also be used to combat Foreigners.[17] Since the Noble Phantasm targets their spirit origins directly, Van Gogh can alternatively use it to extract the Outer Gods' terminals from them, thereby severing their link permanently.[17] Van Gogh used it to defeat Summer Abigail Williams,[18] Mysterious Heroine XX,[19] and Katsushika Hokusai.[20] She could have used it to defeat Yang Guifei as well, but she refrained from doing so because it would have killed the latter.[21]

Van Gogh's second Noble Phantasm is Het Gele Huis. It brings disaster and destruction to her enemies in the form of the cold wind mistral. On the other hand, her allies inside the Yellow House are empowered through protections and blessings. However, it also Curses people inside the house, so its usage must be balanced with sufficient caution.[1][16] Van Gogh used it to strengthen Summer Frankenstein's Skewered Plasma Blade to the point they could break free and escape from the Evil God of the Flowers.[16]

Vincent van Gogh has a third Noble Phantasm known as Le Père Tanguy. However, the Outer Gods were never interested on it because he was mentally stable when he painted it. Due to this, Clytie Van Gogh can't use it.[17]

Other Capabilities

  • Monster Summoning: Van Gogh can use her blood as a Catalyst to summon monsters.[4]

Forms and Alternate Versions

Evil God of the Flowers

As a side effect of Clytie's Saint Graph, in particular, her Curse of Sunflower, Van Gogh bloomed into the Evil God of the Flowers instead of taking her own life.[1][15] However, Osakabehime points out that she's still just a bud, and that she hasn't reached the blooming stage yet. This was the Evil God's Plan B during the events of the Imaginary Trench; transform Van Gogh into a powerful god in the event they were unable to use De Sterrennacht to deify the other Foreigners. Scáthach-Skadi calls it the advent of an Evil God.[15]

Appearance

Although initially mistaken by a massive reef in Void Space, this is actually Van Gogh's real body.Van Gogh's form is spherical, with about a three kilometer diameter. Ritsuka Fujimaru wondered if it was the biggest enemy they had seen up to date. The outside is like a Spirit body's outer shell, complete with a powerful Spiritual Core signal in the center.[15]

Abilities

Since Van Gogh was conflicted when attacking the Nautilus, only half of her warhead torpedoes were A-rank explosives. The other half were made up of resources and healing Spells. If she hadn't healed them at the same time they were hitting them, they would have been obliterated.[15]

After rescuing Van Gogh, the massive structure was destroyed from the inside by Summer Minamoto-no-Raikou full power Śakra's Vajra.[16]

Development

Creation and Conception

Van Gogh was designed by Kibadori Rue in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is amphibian in Fate/Grand Order.[1]

Comment from Illustrator

"So I was told to make a "slightly creepy but cute girl with a dependent, self-deprecating personality" and I was like, what, I love every part of that. So I put my will into it... or more like, all of my soul into it, and that's how I approached the design. It was a lot of fun. Even while keeping to the "sickly flower" concept, I made it so as you go progress from 1st to 2nd to 3rd ascensions it went from a flower you might be familiar with, to a more alien flower (or at least, I hope I did...). I also thought on how to really incorporate "complementary colors", something the painter van Gogh was known for, so the design proposal was about to be a huge chaotic mess. But! Takeuchi-sensei and the writer amphibian-sensei managed to get it all organized really well. I really can't thank them enough." (Kibadori Rue) [1]
