Components

Yang Guifei

She who came to be known as the source of the Tang Dynasty’s downfall and the rebellion that set the empire ablaze, Guifei. From a cute town girl of childhood to a beautiful bewitching spoiled princess, a foreigner of changing appearances and personalities. Hidden inside are the blinding flames of a malignant god who resides within a star….?

"My beauty is for the Empire, my love is for the Emperor, and my heart for my relatives. Though as that may be, the sound of my lute, the happiness from my songs and dance are only mine, and not for others."

Within the 300 years of history that the Tang Dynasty lived, she became the consort of Emperor Xuanzong who ruled during its peak period. Xuanzong was the grandson of Wu Zetian. As this is the case, we can say that Wu Zetian is her grandmother-in-law, but they seem to have some issues.

From a young age, as a result of her beauty she became withdrawn because of all the scum and monsters she attracted to her. However, on the other hand, when she and her siblings lost their parents and were wandering the streets, they were able to be saved due to her beautiful appearance. Since then, she decided to proactively use her beauty as a tool to become a source of happiness for others and gained a newfound sense of confidence and pride in herself.

Appearance

Based on Yang's clothing and choice of greeting, Scáthach-Skadi is able to deduce that she's a Heroic Spirit from somewhere in Proper Human History's Asia.[2]

Personality

A highly desirable childhood friend-type beauty? Due to her relatives entering her into a national beauty contest without her permission and her suddenly becoming famous, she doesn’t have much self-awareness. Exceptionally talented at singing, dancing, and the lute (biwa). She loves lychee and has an unparalleled love for hot springs. She is honest and positive. She is a hard worker who finds joy in helping and devoting herself to those close to her.

According to Osakabehime, Yang Guifei has a PDF (Princess Dominion Force) (姫力(ひめぢから)?) level of at least 336,000. This term is used to describe her genuine nobility and elegance. In Yang's case, it's so high that it shines through even as she attempts to hide it behind a friendly demeanor. For comparison, Osakabehime's PDF level is 2, and Cleopatra is the only other Servant in Chaldea with a level in the six digits. This information, along with Yang's ethnicity, allowed Osakabehime to deduce Yang's True Name when the two first met.[2]

Relationships

Wu Zetian
"Waaahhh! I was mercilessly tortured after I accidentally called her Nightless Nai Nai... She said, "Did I hear wrong? Shouldn't it be Nightless Jie Jie?" So scary! Saws are scary!!!" [3]
"Fuuya Jiějie is my great Emperor's esteemed grandmother! Even though we are not blood-related, I believe we are a proper family. She works very hard and even managed to become the emperor. When she's angry, she's really scary and makes you fear for your life, but that can be quite addictive too... No, no, no, Yuuyuu will also work hard from now on so she will approve of me!"[1]
Qin Shi Huang
"Kyah! It's the great Qin Shi Huang!!! They are truly the emperors of all emperors!!! To think that the great First Emperor who built a hot spring retreat after frolicking with a goddess... Come again? The Great Wall? What's that? (Sigh) I wonder if we could have a hot spring here too..."[3]
"The emperor among emperors! Though I say that, I feel ashamed of myself since I do not know everything about that reign of his. The legend that Huaqing PoolWP, a famous complex of hot springs that I also loved, was created by the great Qin Shi Huang to flirt with a Celestial Maiden, is quite famous. Unexpectedly, we had a connection through hot springs!"[1]
Xuanzang Sanzang
"The great Xuanzang Sanzang!? Yes, I know her! She's the great monk who traveled all the way to India to bring back a ton of sutras to fill up the southern tower in Chang'an, right? The previous Imperial Highness thought highly of her, and she is the venerable person who elevated the Capital of Chang'an's prestige as well as becoming the cornerstone for bringing peace to the Tang dynasty! But then...(sniff)...I-I ended up ruining the nation... (Sob)"[3]
Li BaiWP
"Li Bai-san was a complete drunkard, but he was also an amazing poet and a somewhat elusive personage. It's about time I ask for his forgiveness for materializing him as "Imaginary Li Bai-san" when I'm dead drunk...just kidding. Please, at least make it clear whether you resent me for the case where you got banished from the imperial court or you're just having fun teasing me~."[1]
Abe no NakamaroWP
"The envoy sent to Tang, Abe no Nakamaro-kun is Li Bai-san's drinking buddy! E~verything I know about Japan was taught to me by Abe-kun! I see, even though he worked so hard, he couldn't return to his birthplace... I pray that at least his soul managed to return to Japan."[1]
Kuukai DaishiWP
"The Kuukai Daishi who visited Tang is a very famous personage in Japan known as Koubou Daishi, right? He is the number one Servant this Yuuyuu would want to come to Chaldea! After all, he is an expert when it comes to opening hot springs! ...Eh? "Daishi-sama is an existence that has attained immortality so he might not be a Heroic Spirit"? No way~!?"[1]
Tamamo-no-Mae
" Tamamo-no-Mae... Ever since we've met, you've been giving me strange glances... Yes, I completely understand... I understand that I'm never to mention the word "Daji." And as we both carry the same type of sins... ...Huh? ...Now you're shaking your head... Are you trembling with excitement? What could that mean...? You're not trying to twist the truth so that you can convince people that Yang Guifei was actually the Daji...are you? Hmmm..." [3]
Tamamo-no-Mae/Taigong Wang/Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya
"Could it be that I am suspected of being Daji-san's reincarnation or that I'm someone related to her? I-it's true that we share the intense common feature of being "country-ruiners"... Yes...I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry."[1]
BB Pele
"Master? Master!? Oh no, no! That person is bad news. I'm talking about that Luluhawa BB who keeps saying "aloha!" Whether she's the real deal or she's borrowing someone else's form is beside the point... Just don't ask any questions. If Master's not careful, your SAN will no longer be able to END this world... B-b-b-but! Rest assured. Worst-case, I will personally burn her up. I'll go ahead and burn up all of Chaldea on trash day! Leave it to me!"[3]
"BB-san is a curious being. My instincts tell me we need to burn her to a crisp with high-calorie genuinely strong flames! ...Such a sense of purpose is driving me, but, hmm, I wonder what's this Nyarl-y sensation? It's different from when I want to pester Fuuya Jiějie...could it be...a heartfelt feeling of sentiment for a friend?"[1]
"Yeah, I think I've decided I actually like you! We should be besties, BB!"[4]
Katsushika Hokusai
"There's something bothering me, Master. This artist, Katsushika Hokusai, who keeps following me around... She always keeps a certain distance while she grinds ink... In the morning, at night...when I'm at the cafeteria, at the bath, and even when I'm in the toi...ahem... Uh-huh... She wants to build a relationship with me because we're both Foreigners...? I honestly doubt that. She's probably like Li Bai, thinking she can do anything at all as long as it's in the name of her art." [3]
Abigail Williams
"Miss Abby. Yes, she's taught me a lot about Chaldea. Hm? You're asking if she's acting like a bossy sister-in-law? Not at all. She's very endearing to me. Her golden hair and blue eyes remind of the Persian maidservant who served me when I was in the inner palace. That girl was also brazen like Abby, and she would never mince her words... She often ridiculed and kicked me around, calling me chubby... (Grumble, grumble...)"[3]
Cleopatra
" I-I'm one of the Three Great Beauties of the world!? Th-that's quite the honor...but I feel bad for the other two being associated with a country bumpkin like me... Oh...but maybe I should consider myself lucky. I'm going to use this golden opportunity to exchange information on beauty with the great Queen Cleopatra. Yes, that's right! Pearls are a drink!" [3]
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri
" Ah...it was great...that was such a wonderful ensemble... I joined in a trio that consisted of a piano, violin, and my pipa. I can now rest in peace. Please go ahead and kill me while I'm still floating in this wonderful bliss. Whaaa...? I can play again tomorrow? ...That's wonderful... Then, would you care to join, Master? How about you be the vocalist?" [3]

Role

Fate/Grand Order

Event: Imaginary Scramble

Through eldritch power, Guifei's Outer God created a vacancy in the Throne and had Guifei fill it.[5] Then, when Ritsuka tried to summon a Servant from the Spirit Origin graph to help the Nautilus crew with their predicament of being trapped in the Imaginary Number Sea, Guifei's Outer God used eldritch power to glitch the summoning system so it would connect to the Throne instead of the graph.[2][5] Guifei was thus summoned with the secret mission of gathering eldritch power to empower her Outer God enough for them to break their seal.[4]

Guifei agrees to help the crew and reveals that, with her exceptional hearing, she has been hearing someone outside pounding on the ship, warning of incoming enemies. Mash, Scáthach-Skadi, and Osakabehime go out (Skadi changed herself and Osakabehime into swimsuits using her runic magecraft to copy the Imaginary Numbers Formula memory chip BB embed in the swimsuit she sent) and eliminate the enemy, which they were able to see thanks to Guifei's powers. Afterward, Mash and Osakabehime rescue and bring aboard Van Gogh.[2]

Five hours have passed without another attack, and Van Gogh is already cooperating. However, the crew questions if Van Gogh is the famed artist Vincent Van Gogh and if she can be trusted since she is female, unlike Vincent, for whom there is plenty of visual evidence to confirm he is male, and Nurse's medical examination of her suggests she isn't human. Captain Nemo suggests she is either deluded into thinking she's Vincent, Vincent himself with his gender and memories confused by an abnormality in his Spirit Origin, or a hostile impostor. It's also worrying she doesn't truly understand she is a Foreigner, but because she's already provided valuable information about Imaginary Number Space, everyone agrees she isn't an enemy. Ritsuka decides to enter into a temporary contract with her. At that moment, Nemo has everyone leave the room so he can have a private conversation with Ritsuka.

Meanwhile, outside the room, a Marine serves Mash and Guifei non-alcoholic cocktails that Mash somehow gets drunk off of. Skadi then shows her an alleged self-destruct switch she found in the storeroom. Mash presses it and the sound of the explosion attracts Imaginary Number Space monsters, leading them to attack the Nautilus. As Mash is drunk and Osakabehime is missing, only Skadi is available for combat, but since she alone isn't enough, she forces the Imaginary Numbers formula on Guifei so she can accompany her. Van Gogh joins them after contracting with Ritsuka.[2]

After achieving victory, Skadi realizes Osakabehime ran away because the latter figured out the former intends to shoot her out of a torpedo tube for reconnaissance purposes. Osakabehime is eventually found and captured. Skadi explains that it is too dangerous to use sonar to locate enemies as they're attracted to sound, so she proposes sending Osakabehime out and having her use the divination she uses to prepare her Noble Phantasm to detect enemies instead. Osakabehime is convinced by Ritsuka to follow Skadi's plan. Nemo assigns her, Guifei, and Van Gogh to eliminate any enemies she detects as they progress through the trench, while Mash will act as the last line of defense and Skadi will work with Professor as head of engineering.[2]

The conversation then turns to how they have very little resources; food, magical energy, and materials for repairs. Van Gogh suggests eating the monsters for food and magical energy like she did while adrift. Her words turn out to be true following a battle, so it's decided the combat team will double as a resource provisional team. Then, tying monster entrails to her to act as a lifeline, Osakabehime is launched.[2]

Nemo later calls everyone to the bridge for an emergency briefing about the recent discovery he made. It has been discovered that Van Gogh's unique blood converts Imaginary Number beings into Real Number beings, and the monsters are essentially a renewable resource for everything the crew needs. Unfortunately, it has also been discovered that the Nautilus cannot currently resurface because the current Imaginary Number Space lacks the concept of depth, so the spells the Paper Moon uses to employ the necessary concepts for reemergence are currently unavailable. Any attempts to resurface will either result in nothing happening or crashing into a reef because of the glitched coordinates. Worse still, Osakabehime had detected a monster larger than the Nautilus that Nemo dubs an enemy ship.[6]

The combat team is sent out to prevent the monster from reaching the Nautilus, but they're unfortunately soon overwhelmed. Ritsuka calls for a retreat, but the lifelines are snagged. Worse, Guifei hears reinforcements coming. Fortunately, Van Gogh uses her Noble Phantasm to rescue the combat team, allowing the Nautilus to ram on through. None of the combat team save Van Gogh seem to remember how they were rescued.[6]

However upon reaching the second area Guifei admits to Ritsuka, Nemo, and Mash in private that she lied she lied about not remembering the details of the rescue and divulges the details of the Noble Phantasm Van Gogh had used: Le Père Tanguy. She leaves the room after expressing concern over the fact that Van Gogh can make what she painted in Imaginary Number Space into Real Number-based objects. She tries to eavesdrop on Ritsuka, Nemo, and Mash's conversation when Van Gogh catches her. Guifei leaves reassuring Van Gogh that as a fellow Foreigner she will always be on her side.[7]

Everyone is later called to the bridge. Nemo enters and informs everyone that he called to congratulate them on passing their 150 hour time limit. To commemorate their hard work, he and Skadi have prepared a feast. Everyone heads to the mess hall for the feast, though Guifei thought she heard something.[8]

Unfortunately, the feast is interrupted when the ship is attacked. Nemo finds it strange the enemy found them as he was certain the ship was running silently. At his behest, the combat team heads out and eliminates the enemy before resuming the feast.[8]

Later, Minamoto-no-Raikou eliminates enemy ships (which aren’t even retaliating) barring the Nautilus from the next area. But then Guifei hears that strange sound again and warns an ambush is coming. Nemo orders the combat team to be ready to deploy when Osakabehime reports that the ambusher is another enemy ship. Nemo asks Professor to tell Raikou to switch targets to the new enemy ship, but Professor refuses as recalculating the homing spell inscribed on Raikou’s Noble Phantasm would take too long. Nemo thinks they may have no choice but to use the Nautilus Noble Phantasm, even with Raikou still out there.[9]

Van Gogh paints a platform for Raikou to stand on and the combat team is sent out to protect her while she destroys enemy ships. As they do, the Nautilus slowly reverses, luring the enemy ship away from Raikou and the combat team. Once the Nautilus is far enough away from them, Nemo uses his Noble Phantasm to destroy the enemy ship at point-blank range once the Nautilus is far enough from Raikou and the combat team. Unfortunately, the combat team’s platform suddenly falls apart and the shockwave from the Nautilus Noble Phantasm blasts them away. Communication with them is lost, and worse, they had cut their lifelines in preparation for the attack so now they are adrift. Fortunately, they’re rescued by the recently summoned Meltryllis. Afterward, however, everyone witnesses Van Gogh suddenly gnawing on her own arm. She is taken to the infirmary, where she eventually calms down. Her outburst was apparently the result of her being confused about what had happened.[9]

Ritsuka and Nemo later announce Van Gogh will serve as an advisor from now on. In addition, Nemo puts Meltryllis on recon duty as she can send her penguins out on silent recon missions, though she needs to go out into the Imaginary Number Sea herself to command them. He wants Guifei to stay on the ship from now as sonar is critical to their operations. Also, while the ship's defensive Bounded Fields are stronger now, he wants Mash to stay as the last line of defense. Guifei and Mash both understand Nemo wants them to be near Ritsuka and Van Gogh in the event of a worse case scenario.[10]

The crew soon enters the third area and Osakabehime's scans discover a swarm of small enemies along with an enemy ship three times the size of the Nautilus. The crew eliminates the swarm, but Guifei questions the validity of Osakabehime's scans as she still cannot hear the giant enemy ship Osakabehime had mentioned earlier. Osakabehime affirms it is indeed there, having been scanning the area every ten seconds, and the other scouts' data support her. The reason Guifei can't hear it is because it isn't make any sound. The giant enemy ship suddenly moves, allowing Guifei to finally hear it. She hears it moving away from the Nautilus, so Osakabehime assumes that means they're safe. But then it destroys a nearby landmass with an energy beam, the aftershock of which rocks the Nautilus as if to dissuade the crew from going any further. Nevertheless, the Nautilus proceeds further in.[10]

Following many battles, it becomes very clear the third area is absolutely packed with enemies, though fortunately there hasn't been any sign of the giant enemy ship since the crew's first encounter with it. Nemo tells Osakabehime and Guifei to keep an eye out for the giant enemy ship in case it attacks again. Then after yet another swarm is eliminated, he tells Osakabehime and Guifei to stay on the bridge at all times for now and work alongside Professor to devise a viable technology for remote operations. He understands this double workload for the two of them isn't sustainable, though, so they'll need to think of a longer-term viable solution.[11]

Later, Guifei gifts the Marines with cursed objects under the pretense that they are good luck charms after concluding the Marines were her best hope of cultivating madness and through which eldritch power is accumulated.[4] She also learned how to duplicate herself using her Divinity in conjunction with Memory Partition she learned from Professor and Skadi's runes. She did so she could multitask and did the same for Osakabehime as well.[12]

Ritsuka runs into her while on patrol, much to confusion, as she is supposed to be on the bridge. Guifei explains how she duplicated herself and gives Ritsuka one of her "good luck dolls". She starts to talk about how proud she is of it despite its creepiness when she senses her other self at the bridge has detected enemies. The alarm goes off, so Ritsuka rushes over to the bridge.[12]

The crew later destroys the giant Enemy Ship—Enemy Ship Alpha. But Alpha makes a loud sound as it dies, which fatally wounds Guifei as a result of her sensitive hearing and having weakened her own Spirit Origin when she cloned herself earlier. Desperate to save Guifei, Van Gogh activates De Sterrennacht explaining that it deifies any Foreigners who look upon it while driving everyone else insane. She therefore implores the latter to close their eyes when a white flash occurs.[13]

The deification restores Guifei's Spirit Origin, but as a side effect, her Spirit Origin changed to her third Ascension. Van Gogh is glad the deification didn't go any further, otherwise Guifei wouldn't be a Servant. However, it seems the Ascension had affected Guifei's personality as she offers to serve everyone and her beloved emperor for giving her a second chance at life. She notices the change and changes back to her second Ascension, restoring her original personality.[13]

Van Gogh concludes her Noble Phantasm is too dangerous, knowing with a single mistake every Foreigner can become a threat to humanity. She admonishes herself as a pathetic excuse for a Heroic Spirit and believes she has no right to serve Ritsuka. Ritsuka, Nemo, and Guifei, however, seemingly convince her of her own self-worth and wish for her to stay. Van Gogh is moved by their kindness and promises to do everything to help.[13]

In the fourth and final area, the Nautilus is hit by repeat stealth attacks, eventually forcing the crew to retreat to a calmer area worse the exit is blocked. The stress of the situation is getting to Nemo, and he decides he needs to be alone, so Ritsuka tells everyone to take a break.[14]

However, the ship soon becomes overrun with monsters spawned from Van Gogh's blood. Mash, Osakabehime, Guifei, and the Marines stay safe on the bridge while Ritsuka, Raikou, and Frankenstein go around and slay the monsters. After the monsters are slain, everyone gathers on the bridge.[15]

The crew argues about Van Gogh's innocence since her blood was used to summon monsters and she is most likely the Foreigner who created the spatial gaps from which the enemy launched multiple stealth attacks against the Nautilus. Professor confirms the gaps theory is true with a magecraft function she built with Guifei and Osakabehime. They also modified the ship's weapon systems so they can now eliminate the enemies hiding within the gaps.[15]

Raikou wants to test it out immediately, but Meltryllis thinks they should take care of their internal dispute first. Raikou asserts Van Gogh is innocent, for there is no evidence that says otherwise. The Marines refuse to believe Van Gogh is innocent, though, and start a mutiny, calling for her execution, causing Nemo to overload into an unresponsive state. Xiang Yu then suddenly enters the room and uses his Noble Phantasm at minimum power to knock out the thirteen Marines; he is awake because the incident hadn't been resolved by now like he calculated. Ritsuka remembers there are only supposed to be twelve Marines and deduces the impostor is Oei, prompting the latter to remove her disguise.[15]

Oei confesses she is responsible for nearly every problem the crew has encountered, all because she wanted to stay in the Imaginary Number Sea, calling it a painter's dream come true. She had knocked out her father when he disagreed and found a way to stowaway on the Nautilus. She has no loyalty toward the Outer Gods and only wants to stay here and paint all she can, so she requests Ritsuka to keep the Nautilus here for the next 200 years or so. Ritsuka refuses, leading to a battle between Oei and the crew.[15]

Pushed back, Oei confesses she came to the Imaginary Number Sea because a voice from its deepest depths was calling to her. She and Guifei start charging their Noble Phantasms when Van Gogh (she recently regained consciousness from an earlier battle with Ritsuka, Frankenstein, and Raikou) enters the room. Oei realizes Van Gogh is the one who called her, but she realizes she isn't Vincent Van Gogh. She tries to ask for her true identity, but Meltryllis knocks her out.[15]

Realizing what Oei said was true, Van Gogh asks Ritsuka if they know her Heroic Spirit's true identity. Suddenly the Marines all start saying Clytie, a name Nemo has been keeping to himself, repeatedly. Van Gogh recognizes the name and turns into her third Ascension. But even after hearing that, she still can't help but think of herself as Van Gogh, nor can she escape his memories. She therefore intends to die somewhere deep and far away so she will not bring trouble to everyone and teleports away. Everyone agrees with Ritsuka they need to find her.[15]

Nemo later recovers and everyone discusses Van Gogh's true identity. Nemo deduces she is Clytie (Apollo's former Oceanid lover) implanted with Vincent van Gogh's memories. Skadi realizes the Outer Gods always intended for Van Gogh to go insane and theorizes that they seek to use Imaginary Number Space as an outpost to invade modern-day Earth. For this reason, they summoned Van Gogh to Imaginary Number Space and, per their orders, called Oei and waited for the crew. She was also ordered to create a base and recruit and deify Chaldea's Foreigners.[15]

In answering Van Gogh's call, Oei became amendable to the Outer Gods' desires and, per their plans, she stowed away in the Nautilus and transformed Imaginary Number Space into a sea. If she wasn't stopped, it is likely she would've succumbed to madness completely and painted a temple for the Outer Gods, which would serve as their outpost. Skadi theorizes the Outer Gods planned on having Van Gogh use her Noble Phantasm to deify the other Foreigners once the temple was complete through which they meant to descend upon Earth.[15]

However, Skadi believes Van Gogh had no desire to betray the crew, which is why the Outer Gods fused her with Clytie. She concludes from Vincent's history that he committed suicide because he learned his painting Starry Night had inadvertently invited an Outer God into their world and he'd rather die than fall under the Outer Gods' influence. His absolute refusal to obey them obviously caused a conundrum for the Outer Gods since they desired his Noble Phantasm above all others, so they created their own Heroic Spirit by implanting Clytie with Vincent's memories and talent. Clytie's refusal to end her life would conflict with Vincent's unconscious need to commit suicide and eventually Van Gogh drive to madness and use her Noble Phantasm without compunction.[15]

Meltryllis suggests they honor Van Gogh's wish and kill her since she cannot kill herself, seeing the fact she abandoned the only people who could do that as proof her madness has reached its peak. Van Gogh is only a step away from initiating her final, most dangerous plan, so if the crew wants to save her from that fate, they need a plan that's just, kind, wise, and smart. Everyone agrees to come up with a plan to save Van Gogh while stopping the Outer Gods. Xiang Yu confesses he calculated Van Gogh would separate herself from the others. The crew will reencounter Van Gogh in the current area, but Xiang Yu warns they'll need to be prepared for fierce battles.[15]

The crew eventually located Van Gogh, but discover that her body had been mutated into a giant flower bud. Skadi theorizes it is the Outer Gods' contingency plan in case Van Gogh failed to deify the other Foreigners with De Sterrennacht. Oei agrees to help the crew get through the flower's shell and reveals that the spatial gaps actually work like a real Go board, meaning any area they surround becomes their territory. Therefore, if the crew can make the area Van Gogh is in their territory by capturing the four surrounding gaps, they can warp inside her.[16]

Nemo says they will capture the four gaps with as few people as possible. Once that is done, they will go inside the flower and rescue Van Gogh at its center. Afterward, they will use Raikou's Noble Phantasm to destroy the flower from the inside. Skadi decides the rescue team will consist of Raikou, Meltryllis, and Frankenstein; Raikou will assume torpedo duties, Meltryllis will be the escort, and Frankenstein will rescue Van Gogh. As for who will capture the four points, she decides it will be Guifei, Osakabehime, herself, and Oei.[16]

All the sudden, Van Gogh lets out a screech that shakes the Nautilus and implores the crew to stay away, sending out Enemy Ships in order to force them. She knows everyone wants to save her, but she believes they shouldn't, considering herself too dangerous and feels she has no right to be with them.[16]

She is no longer certain of who she is, wanting to die because she is Vincent, but refusing to die because she is Clytie. But none of that matters, for she only needs to follow the Outer Gods' orders to use her Noble Phantasm to deify other Foreigners. Even if her mind self-destructs due to overload, she can still fulfill her main objective by engaging her core consciousness and letting her divine form bloom. She is glad her life has a purpose even if she cannot stand it or herself, and is certain Vincent and Clytie would feel the same way.[16]

To the crew's surprise, though, half of the enemy warheads contain A-rank explosives while the other heals, and if they weren't hitting at the same time, the ship would've sunk long ago. Nemo realizes it is the result of Van Gogh feeling conflicted over whether to give herself over to the Outer Gods' influence or rid herself of their influence. As a Phantom Spirit himself, he can tell she is trying to fight their influence. Ritsuka suggests to Nemo since that they're both Phantom Spirits, maybe his voice can get through to Van Gogh.[16]

With Guifei amplifying his voice so it reaches her, Nemo asks Van Gogh to give herself a name so she may gain a sense of self. He promises her that, no matter what name she choses she will not be abandoned and she will be rescued. After a moment, all enemy projectiles are fully converted into support resources. Van Gogh then addresses the Nautilus crew, declaring herself Clytie van Gogh, telling them if they can accept that name she'd be happy if they saved her.[16]

Van Gogh is eventually rescued from the flower, which Raikou destroys from the inside with her Noble Phantasm. The Evil God of Flowers (Van Gogh's Outer God and the mastermind behind this whole incident) contacts the crew afterward. It accepts it lost due to lack of foresight, but it also claims the crew had refused their chance at the second-best outcome they could've hoped for: a peaceful, gentle destruction. It finds it a pity and bids the crew farewell.[17]

Now back on the Nautilus, Van Gogh begins the process of creating a Holy Grail, which will be used to return Imaginary Numbers Space to normal, so the Nautilus crew can leave, as well as prevent future invasions. While she is making it, though, she reveals she cannot use Le Père Tanguy, though she can still paint the picture. With Guifei's lie exposed, Xiang Yu tries to kill her, but he is defeated by her counterattack. He apologizes to Ritsuka that the rest is up to them and collapses.[5]

Guifei snatches the Grail Van Gogh just finished making. Raikou and Meltryllis try to stop her, but her flames keep them from approaching her, having carefully researched everyone so none of them could stop her at this precise moment. She then fills the bridge with a curse, which presumably prompts the Marines to suddenly grab Skadi, Osakabehime, and Meltryllis from behind. Guifei had planned for this exact moment and decided now to make her move now that she is overflowing with eldritch power, revealing the Outer Gods had used it to connect the summoning system directly to the Throne. Guifei then changes into her third Ascension to demonstrate her allegiance to the Outer Gods.[5]

Van Gogh believes her usage of De Sterrennacht had turned Guifei into the Outer Gods' ally. Guifei corrects her that she was always their ally, revealing she came to Imaginary Number Space because she was called. Van Gogh refuses to believe that as the Evil God of Flowers only had her call out to gods of the same alliance and of those only Hokusai had answered. Guifei reveals how her emperor assured she could be summoned from the Throne. She then calls Ritsuka her emperor (accumulating so much eldritch power had apparently deluded Guifei[4]), putting Ritsuka in a trance.[5]

Unable to speak, Ritsuka is manipulated into commanding Guifei to bring forth depravity or destruction. Fortunately, Frankenstein destroys the good luck doll Guifei gave Ritsuka, allowing them to speak again, but it is too late for Ritsuka to rescind "their" command.[5] However, instead of using the Grail to convert herself into a living flame like he was supposed to, Guifei uses it to hack the summoning system and summon Abigail Williams and Mysterious Heroine XX.[4][5] She could've sworn she summoned a third Servant, but believing the current number will suffice, she proceeds to infuse all present Foreigners with eldritch power, driving all of them (except for Van Gogh) insane.[5]

She declares that the Foreigners will now hold the Great Foreigner Festival Imaginary Number Sea Scramble Ritsuka "requested", a festival where they will vie for control of the Imaginary Number Sea, with the winner earning the right to rule over the next era on Earth. At her behest, the Foreigners (except for Van Gogh) leave the Nautilus to take the Imaginary Number Sea for themselves.[5]

Guifei is the final Foreigner the Nautilus crew confront, and her delusions about Ritsuka being emperor have come to the point that she only sees them and no one else. However, Osakabehime’s insistence that the friendly way Guifei acted before was real her and that Ritsuka would never abandon a Servant with such redeeming qualities seem to reach Guifei as she reverts to her first Ascension and becomes confused about what exactly happened to her beloved emperor. It is unfortunately brief, though, as she returns to her third Ascension and readies her Noble Phantasm to engulf the Imaginary Number Sea so she may become a living flame and reunite with her beloved emperor.[18]

Van Gogh defeats Guifei in combat, but unfortunately she cannot cleanse her without killing her because 90% of her Spirit Origin is occupied by the Outer God’s terminal. Guifei then starts to disappear, but it is stopped by a torpedo Raikou made with Nurse. Afterward, Wu Zetian (the third Servant Guifei had summoned[5]) introduces herself to Guifei as her grandmother-in-law. She then has Frankenstein briefly connect her to Van Gogh and borrows De Sterrennacht to return Guifei to her first Ascension by placing restrictions on her Spirit Origin. One of these restrictions is that she cannot marry her beloved emperor until she is mature enough for marriage.[18]

Guifei later finds herself in BB's studio. BB reveals she removed all the parts of Guifei's Spirit Origin occupied by the Outer God's terminal, leaving only her public persona. She promises to "fix" her later, but first she wants Guifei to give a comprehensive review of her failed scheme as punishment. Guifei easily agrees to talk when BB threatens to subject her to tickle torture. She then explains her mission and how it ultimately failed because she deluded herself into thinking Ritsuka is her beloved emperor and used the Grail to create the Great Foreigner Festival in an effort to make them happy instead of turning herself into a living flame like she was supposed to.[4]

BB concludes that despite their similarities, she and Guifei differ from each other in that while love drives the former to succeed in her schemes while it makes the latter's fail. But regardless of her misgivings, BB decides she'll incorporate Guifei's scheme when she next wears a swimsuit. Guifei, upon hearing BB say swimsuit, goes from hating BB for reminding her of her failures to wanting to murder her and wonders if she is her sworn enemy.[4]

Realizing she has said too much, BB decides to send Guifei back to Chaldea. She reassures the seemingly guilt-ridden Guifei that once her Spirit Origin is returned to its original state, she'll be so obsessed with her beloved emperor again she'll forget all about her guilt along with everything that occurred in the studio and most of her memories regarding the Imaginary Number Sea. From Guifei's perspective, she will begin a new life at Chaldea under the impression her emperor ordered her to go there.[4]

Guifei regrets how she treated Ritsuka, Osakabehime, and Van Gogh and laments she won't even notice them once she is back at Chaldea because she will be too preoccupied with her beloved emperor. BB starts to feel sorry for Guifei until the latter suddenly suggests they become best friends and join the good side together. BB refuses to do that and sends Guifei back to Chaldea. Guifei gives her a friendly goodbye, expecting to see her again.[4]

Fate/strange Fake

In Fate/strange Fake, she is briefly mentioned when False Caster brags that he managed to sleep with both her and Cleopatra VII. Nobody believes him.

Abilities

Yang Guifei is known far and wide as a peerless beauty from China's Tang dinasty. It is said that she set a hundred men's hearts aflame with a single smile, and she was also highly proficient in numerous fine arts.[2] Before her marriage to Emperor Xuanzong, she became a high-ranking Taoist nun and received the title "Taoist Taizhen".[1] Yang Guifei didn't have an inclination for madness that would make her an attractive vessel for an Outer Universe divinity.[18] However, her karma of ruin, devilish beauty,[1] keen mind, and devout love for her emperor,[18] drew the attention of an outer god.[1][18] The reason why Yang Guifei's body went missing after her death is that the gods used it as the base of the Heroic Spirit seen in Fate/Grand Order. This is also why most of her Saint Graph is flooded with reverence for the outer universe, despite having no connection to it in her lifetime.[18] Furthermore, the many legends left to posterity are another source of power for the Servant Yang Guifei.[1]

Combat

Yang Guifei makes use of her instruments in conjunction with the powers of the Outer God (Cthugha) connected to her to fight her enemies. She can play them to summon apparitions, who were once her attendants who used to serve at Yang Guifei's lunar mansion's inner palace, where she calls the said ladies-in-waiting as flame spirits or "Fire Vampires", which assault the enemy with blue flame and make use of these blue flames to empower her on physical attacks or engulf her biwa in them to use as a melee weapon. As she gets closer to the Outer God, she is able to fire laser beams from her flutes and also link them together to use as a whip. She can also play her biwa to rain down blue flame upon her enemies, as well as manifest a miniature blue sun to launch at her enemies.[1][citation needed]

Skills

Class Skills

  • Divinity (B Rank): Having become the precursor of a higher-order existence lurking within Outer Space, she was adorned with strong Divinity. Though it's as if it had no effect at all on Yang Guifei, who reigns as a symbol of beauty in Human History... Perhaps her compatibility with the Evil God was way too good.[1]
    • Extra-Dimensional Secret Ultra Cloning Technique (秘境異次元・身外身(ぶんしん)の術?) An ability that allows Yang Guifei to clone herself and can only be used in Void Space. Even though her Divinity skill includes Authority over Divine Spirits, she can't manifest one of them. Doing so surpasses the capabilities of a single Servant. Due to this, her Saint Graph would melt down if she tried to make another full-fledged copy of herself. However, during the events of Imaginary Scramble, she discovered she could cool her excess divinity by casting it out into the Void Sea, letting her use it in ways she would normally never be able to even try. Thanks to that, Nemo Professor teaching her how to use Memory Partition, and some of Scáthach-Skadi's Rune Magecraft, she finally managed to clone herself. The main body was placed outside the Nautilus to act as a radar while the clone roamed inside the ship.[12] However, giving away most of her saint graph to her clone left the original self so weakened that a fatal injury like the scream of an Enemy Ship would probbaly result in both her and her clone disappearing.[13]

Personal Skills

  • Affection for Three Thousand in One (A→A+ Rank): The emperor's love that was to be lavished on the three thousand beauties waiting on him in the harem was received by Yang Guifei alone and she wouldn't relinquish it even after her death.[1]
  • Sun of a Calamitous Star (A→A+ Rank): Like how the wick of a candle burns until its very end, it is an indestructible aspect that continues to shine, unceasing even within the maelstrom of a rebellion.[1]

Noble Phantasm

Her Noble Phantasm is Marital Vows of Rainbow Skirts and Feather Robes. The star of the abyss secretly recites a song that can not reach the ears of mortals.[1] When fighting Oei Katsushika, Yan Guifei choses to counter Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji‎ with her own Noble Phantasm. Ritsuka Fujimaru implied that one of them would end up dead if the battle continued.[15]

Other Capabilities

  • Audio Sensitivity: As a Servant, Yang Guifei has really good hearing, likely because many people thought she was a great performer in life. This allowed her to hear what happened in Void Space outside the Nautilus during the Imaginary Scramble. However, Nemo Professor can prevent her from overhearing them with an audio jamming Bounded Field.[2] When tasked with acting as Chaldea's radar, she tweaked her Saint Graph to boost her audio sensitivity with no thought to the risks. This made her more vulnerable to the Colossal Enemy Ship's scream, and she would have died from it had it not been by Van Gogh using De Sterrennacht to heal her. Not even 3 Command Spells could have saved her.[13]
  • Illusory Textures[7]: Yang has the power to project highly advanced visuals onto Void Space entities.[15] Since the Imaginary Scramble's Void Space was akin to the pitch-dark depths of the sea, lit by false light, Yang was capable of using the flame illusions she gives off to imbue the Enemy Ships with a visual concept, thereby making them visible. In her own words, she determine's theur position, size, and class through the sound they make to then project a visual on top.[2]

Development

Creation and Conception

Yang Guifei was designed by Kuroboshi Kouhaku in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Meteo Hoshizora in Fate/Grand Order.

Comment from Illustrator

"I designed her with an emphasis on the gap created by advancing from the modest first and second ascensions to the third ascension. In exchange for making the body modest, I tried to make the silhouette flashy with the biwa and flute. In fact, there are various theories, such as that she was plump or that she had an outstanding figure so I took the middle ground and made only her thighs thicker." (Kuroboshi Kouhaku)[1]
