Katsushika HokusaiWP (葛飾 北斎WP, Katsushika Hokusai?), Class Name Foreigner (フォーリナー, Fōrinā?), is a Foreigner-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile

Identity

Katsushika Hokusai is a composite Servant.

Components

Katsushika Hokusai

An ukiyoe artist from the second half of the Edo period.

In addition to "Katsushika Hokusai", he had over 30 other pen names like "Gakyo Rojin" and "Sori". As a painter representing Japan, he had a great influence on foreign painters and musicians such as Gogh and DebussyWP. Known for his terribly fast brush strokes, he left behind 30,000 works in his lifetime. The aforementioned works range from ukiyo-e woodblock prints to paintings done by hand, manga (different from modern manga), and shunga (pornographic art). In his later years, he was living together with his third daughter, "Katshushika Ōi" who worked as his assistant. His most important works are the woodblock print series “Thirty-six Views of Mount FujiWP“, "Hokusai Manga", the monster paintings from his "Hyakumonogatari" series, the shunga "“The Dream of the Fisherman's WifeWP“ and others.

He was known as an oddball who stood out with his eccentric behavior, such as changing residence 93 times during his lifetime, or being really careless with money despite living in extreme poverty. On the occasions when he ventured outside, he was constantly reciting incantations and the like.[1]

At some point, Katsushika encountered an Outer God. Most ordinary humans would have been rendered hopelessly insane or turned into mindless thralls by its presence, but sheer stubbornness and dedication to portray what he had seen on his own terms allowed him to keep his mind intact.

Katsushika Ōi

The main body is actually Hokusai's daughter Katsushika OuiWP (葛飾 応為WP, Katsushika Ōi?); the little octopus is Hokusai. This is because their legend and Mystery extends to both of them courtesy of Oui painting under the name.

Outer God

Main article: Outer God (Hokusai)

Appearance

« You're saying I do not look like Hokusai at all? Well, apologies for the charming appearance. If you want to know the circumstances, you better listen to my story! »

(Foreigner)

She is always together with the weird octopus she calls “father”.[1]

Personality

Hokusai (pops) and Oui (Oei). This father-daughter pair is similar even down to their personalities. They're raised in Edo with a strong frank attitude. They put emphasis on style and taste, and don't really bother with small details. Not very good with gloomy moods. Cleaning, cooking, and basically all house chores are trivial and completely ignored by them. They love Amazake and sweet bean jam-filled rice cakes. Also of course, beauties. Strangely, Hokusai doesn't drink nor smoke, meanwhile, Oui is somewhat fond of both, though alcohol only in small quantities, and for reasons, she's currently stopped smoking.

Hokusai has an unconventional nature. Although he enthusiastically studied the techniques of various painters without being fixated on a single school, he was full of progressive temperament. Adopting the perspectiveWP of Western paintings, he can be said to be the origin of modern-day manga by employing landscape painting that presented a cut-out moment of motion. Manifesting in this modern age and freed from the rigid shogunate's pressure, Hokusai will probably learn all forms of art with glee, vigorously challenging himself. Be it shunga, abstract, digital or performance art.[1]

Relationships

Abigail Williams (Chaldea)
"Oh? I'm not the only Foreigner? A golden-haired Western girl called Abigail... She is awfully jittery... boy, she's all over the place. Hm? Don't be blabbing and just draw manga, you say? It's a pain, but if Lord Master insists, then I have no choice... But know that I won't cut my rates by a single cent just because I'm up against a Westerner."[3]
"The Foreigner...Abigail? She's like this mysterious fiend when she's out on the battlefield, but I'm a bit relieved to see that she's still a callow little girl. I can see she'll be quite a beauty when she grows up. Hm? That's strange to say about a Servant, I guess. Ahahaha. A beauty, huh? Maybe I should paint her one of these days."[3]
Abigail Williams (Swimsuit)
Abigail Williams (Chaldea) and Katsushika Hokusai (Foreigner)
"That Abigail girl from the West seems to have taken a liking to me. Wait...did you just say "Tentacle Iron Bar"? You just blurted that weird name out of the blue, you made me spit out my amazake. Huh? That was another one of Toto-sama's pseudonyms? That's just bonkers, Toto-sama!"[3]
Yang Guifei
Katsushika Hokusai (Swimsuit)
"(Siiiiiigh) You're pretty cruel, Master, for summoning such a naive little girl. My face's scorching from embarrassment! Guess I have no choice. Looks like that other me's got her brush and is ready to go, so as the more mature version of me, I gotta be the bigger person here. ...How do I know that? You see... Seems like that other Toto-sama and my Toto-sama are completely the same, and they're even connected. What the heck's even happening?"[3]
"Ahaha. What a hoot... There's another version of that daughter of mine. Now there's a perverse divorcée, and another a fierce spitfire. They may be a handful, Master, but please take good care of 'em."[3]
Gilles de Rais (Caster)
"Do you know a weird guy with big bulging eyes? His name's Gilles...de Rais, or something. He came to me with a bunch of money and started shouting, "Ooh, a painter of divinity... No, better! A painter of dark, evil divinity!" I declined. Politely, though! Then he started blubbering, so I doodled on a frame and signed it "Shishiki Gankou" for him."[3]
Kyokutei Bakin and Katsushika Hokusai (Foreigner)
Minamoto-no-Raikou and Sakata Kintoki
"You impress me, Lord Master. Kaidoumaru and Raikou...are together in the same place. They're perfect for huntin' down monsters. Well, I may end up being the monster more often than I'd like...but no matter. Blood will have blood. A warrior must sometimes resort to...questionable tactics to win. ...Besides, there's nothing wrong with having an abundance of inspiration."[3]
Shuten-douji
"(Hic) Oh, sorry. I had a few drinks... That oni on Mt. Ooe... She turned out awfully cute in Chaldea. Personality-wise? Well, she's still a monster... Hahaha... (Sniff) ...Sorry for being such a downer. Guess I still can't look girls with bob cuts in the eye..."[3]
Tamamo-no-Mae
"No, that's a celestial maiden. It would be insulting if we made a mistake. It's true that Toto-sama painted Dākinī, and Daji of the Yin Dynasty, but they were probably copied from illustrations that came from Karakuni. They are probably a figment of the artist's imagination too. Chaldea sure is stranger than any fiction I know of."[3]
"Oh right, Master. Did you think about that thing we talked about earlier? For me to be an apprentice to that fairy, that celestial maiden...the great Tamamo-no-Mae. Eh? She'll put me on a crash course in marriage training rather than train me in sage techniques!? N-no, I wouldn't want that at all!"[3]
Suzuka Gozen
"The demon princess, Suzuka Gozen... Gulp. We're both Sabers, and we seem to be the same age, too. I really want to get along so she can teach me her divine powers. But the thing is, I don't know what the heck her high school thing is. Is that something I should copy and follow suit? Y-yo, princess...? That wack tappy-ohka drink will totes go bye-ral and I'm seriously doing it for the gram...???"[3]
Ushiwakamaru
"L-Lord Master? There was quite a strange-looking...or actually, an almost buck-naked young warrior. Was that Kurou Yoshitsune!? I did draw Dan-no-Ura a bit, but I painted Kurou's uncle, Chinzei Hachirou more than that...in illustrations for "Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki" by Bakin. I see... So I should re-draw Hachirou like that too..."[3]
Lü Bu
"A man from Karakuni named Lu Bu... He's that super giant military commander. I asked him about Guan Yu, whom I painted quite often...but I couldn't understand a single word he said!"[3]
Consort Yu
"Even I know that Yu Mei-ren is that tragic beauty. And now she acts like an old-timer here in Chaldea!? On top of that, she's an immortal fairy!? I need to work up my courage to ask her if I can be her kouhai, just like Master."[3]

Role

Fate/Grand Order

The strange octopus 'pops'. His daughter and assistant, 'Katsushika Oui (Oei)'. A pair of Servants that introduce themselves as 'Katsushika Hokusai'. An octopus that usually just floats about without saying anything, and his daughter Oei who doesn't seem bothered by her father's transformation.

Once she grabs a brush, father and daughter become as one, and they fiercely display the painting talent that conquered all the streets of Edo. Hokusai's desire to master the way of painting, was something that, unlike the limits a normal person could reach in their lifetime, opened up new frontiers. The works he left behind made an impression on many people, and there were countless of those who sought to continue Hokusai's legacy.

However, what moves people isn't just ideals. Greed and delusion, hesitation and madness. 'If I had lived just a bit more...I'd have become a true artist...'. This wish of the mad painter was what the Demon Pillar Raum took advantage of, and gave Hokusai the opportunity to beome enchanted by the god of the abyss that lurked in space.

Hokusai Trial Quest

At the moment of his death, Hokusai is called to the Abyss by an Outer God. Hokusai's obsessive desire to paint had drawn the Outer God to him. Not heeding the Gentleman's warnings, he heads further into the Abyss and is possessed by the Outer God.

The Outer God then entered Ritsuka's dream of Edo, planning to enter the real world through it. But Hokusai had no intention of being its vessel and inadvertently called his daughter, Oei, into the dream to obstruct the Outer God's plans. He then became a small octopus floating around his daughter.

In the dream's scenario, Hokusai and the Utagawa had been tasked to paint a treasure ship for the shogun. Hokusai is missing, however, so his disciples (Oei included) search desperately for him. If he isn't found by tomorrow, the entire Hokusai school may be punished depending on how offended the shogun is.

Taking a job at Ekou-in, Oei paints a large picture of Hotei-son to commemorate the new year. Afterward, she notices Ritsuka and Suzuka Gozen. She introduces herself when Hokusai's disciples call her over.  Hatchoubori, along with his subordinates Bou and Sei, has come looking for an impostor of Hokusai, based on the intel the police received. As Hokusai himself isn't present, they decide to arrest Hokusai's disciples, Oei included. But publisher Nishimuraya says the police should've gotten notice that Hokusai himself wouldn't be present. Nevertheless, Hatchoubori and his subordinates continue with their arrest. Oei fights back, with Ritsuka and Suzuka joining her.[4]

After being defeated, Hatchoubori admits the police were at fault and apologizes for trying to frame Oei for a crime she didn't commit.

Afterward, at Ryougoku Bridge, Ritsuka tells Oei they're in a dream to her disbelief. Oei and Nishimuraya then confess that they've been searching everywhere for Hokusai to no avail since yesterday. Her father is needed for an important job.

At her home, Oei explains what Hokusai was tasked with. Ritsuka steps on a wooden figure representing the Myouken Bosatsu. Oei then realizes there is a place she hasn't looked for her father yet.

Oei tries to go to Hosshou Temple, having recalled Hokusai became popular after narrowly escaping death by lightning there. But she and the others are stopped by Old Meowster, Kakuloe, and Illysuke. Kakuloe and Illysuke ask her if the ukiyo-e they were sold is a genuine Hokusai piece. Oei sees it's a real ukiyo-e piece, but she doesn't care if it was made by Hokusai or not. Kakuloe makes the implication that Oei is lying to herself, which angers Oei that her way of life is being questioned. She then produces a response to that of a Servant. With Suzuka's help, she fights Old Meowster, Kakuloe, and Illysuke.[5]

Unfortunately, Oei collapses during the battle. After being tended to by Suzuka and Illysuke, Oei confesses the piece was a collaboration between her and her father. Ever since then she has painted many pieces under her father's name. Ritsuka and Suzuka convince her to sign the piece with her name. Illysuke then recalls there were two art dealers and they carried items labeled "Seiseidou" and "Kitsurudou". Oei recognizes those names as publishers from the Utagawa School, but she doesn't recall selling any Hokusai work to them.

Suzuka later asks Oei what will happen to her if she doesn't find her father. Oei explains the consequences if the Hokusai's disciples offend the shogun. Suzuka suggests Oei present the painting herself to the shogun if they fail to find her father. But Oei reminds Suzuka that the invitation was for her father precisely. She then realizes they're in a dream based on how Suzuka is the real Suzuka and how she moved earlier.

At Hosshou Temple, Ritsuka and Suzuka find BB, Mr. Gold, and Omoe there. Oei tries to leave since her father isn't at the temple, but Mr. Gold prevents her. Suzuka accuses him of being part of the Utagawa scheme, but Mr. Gold reveals he already sent the Utagawa publisher, Hoeidou, to the magistrates. He is also looking for Hokusai. However, Oei reveals the Utagawa were meant to demonstrate to the shogun with her father. BB assures though that  Utagawa Hiroshige will appear before the shogun tomorrow. Mr. Gold then explains the Outer God's plan to escape into reality using Hokusai as its vessel. To prevent this, he will render Hokusai unable to paint ever again. Oei says though that her father would paint no matter what happens. Mr. Gold responds that it was that obsession that attracted the Outer God. He then fights Ritsuka, Suzuka, and Oei for deciding to defend Hokusai.[6]

Mr. Gold eventually stops the fight, having realized something about Oei. He also decides to abandon his search for Hokusai. He then says he'll inform the shogun that a great painter will be coming to tomorrow's exhibit in Hokusai's place. Oei realizes he means her painter, and doubts the shogun would entertain such a request unless from a magistrate. After Mr. Gold leaves with his companions, Ritsuka, Suzaka, and Oei return to her home.

At her home, Oei and the others watch the octopus attempt to paint. She then suddenly says "Ph'nglui" twice. It's an incantation Hokusai began to chat one day, though Oei doesn't understand why it popped in her head.

The next day at Ryougoku Bridge, Oei and Hiroshige present themselves to the shogun. Oei is informed she is here today thanks to a special nomination from the northern town magistrate. She and Hiroshige then compete to see whose painting of a treasury will satisfy the shogun's taste. The shogun is impressed by both of them and decides to elevate their positions. However, the next painting competition requires the loser to commit seppuku. Not wanting a promising painter of her school to die, Utagawa Toyoukuni asks to be allowed to assist Hiroshige, which the shogun agrees to.[7]

Toyokuni reveals they are in Ritsuka's dream. She also reveals Oei is acting like a Servant because Ritsuka is projecting their desire onto her. Oei realizes Hokusai died when Toyokuni details the Outer God's plan. She believes her father should remain dead and not try to return. But Toyokuni accuses Oei of lying to herself, calling her the biggest obstacle to the Outer God's plan. The Outer God's influence then corrupts the dream, corrupting Toyokuni and the others as well.

Oei starts to fade away, believing her father had abandoned her. Suzuka encourages her not to give up, revealing she is the one preventing the Outer God's descent and the Outer God is nothing but a fictional entity created from Hokusai's imagination. Even Toyokuni is a temporary manifestation of Hokusai's pursuit of madness in the dream. Hokusai then suddenly possesses his daughter's body. Hokusai admits his obsession allowed him to become the Outer God's vessel, but he will allow it to paint the world in its twisted perspective. He also reveals he saw the Outer God at the moment of his death and declares he will paint it while remaining himself. He, with Ritsuka and Suzuka, then fights Toyokuni and Hiroshige.

After Toyokuni, Hiroshige, and the Shogun disappear, the Evil God's presence also disappears. Hokusai paints an exit for Ritsuka and Suzuka to return to the real world. He then returns to his octopus at Suzuka's demand, returning Oei's body to her. Oei remembers everything that transpired. Suzuka says her goodbyes and takes a selfie with Oei. Oei thanks Ritsuka for reuniting her with her father and bids them farewell.

Later at the Abyss, the Gentleman commends Hokusai for overcoming the Outer God. Hokusai decides to join Chaldea as a Servant, saying Oei wants the same thing. The Gentleman replies that it's possible. After the Gentleman leaves, Hokusai expresses no fear about merging with the mythos. He declares that depicting falsehood and fiction is the ultimate dream for a ukiyo-e artist. He also declares that the Hokusai family will work for free whenever called.

Event: Oni Pagoda Festival

Oei is convinced by Shuten-douji to guard the 10th of her tower with the promise that she will be provided with paints, a place for her to paint, and subjects to paint. Said subjects being Servants. She explains this to Ritsuka's party when they arrive. As they're in a hurry, Tomoe Gozen apologizes they cannot stay to model for her. But Oei refuses to let them leave, forcing the group into a fight. They defeat her, and Ritsuka tells her to soak in the hot springs. The prospect of seeing her would-be subjects naked excites Oei, though she wants her father blindfolded. Hokusai inks her in response and goes off ahead of her. Oei chases after him, suspecting that he's trying to sneak into the women's bath.

Summer Event: Servant Summer Festival!

Oei is the club representative of the suggestively named “Tentacle Iron Bar”, named so by her father. Her art is so good, though, that it doesn’t trend with the general public. Abigail Williams is also a member, but Oei forbids her from accompanying her to this year’s ServantFes as her art will be risque. While out shopping for art supplies and exploring Waikiki Street, however, Oei is killed by Mysterious Heroine XX for being a Foreigner.[8][9]

Fortunately, in the final loop, she is saved by the timely arrival of Ritsuka’s party. They drive XX away and BB soon arrives ready to fight XX, only to see she already gone and Oei is still alive. Oei tells Ritsuka that she is indebted to them and says she’ll return the favor. She then returns to the hotel, barely able to hide her desire to illustrate XX.

Later on the beach, Medb challenges Oei to a combat match in which the loser must surrender their club space. Oei accepts the challenge, deciding to fight Medb and her men alone, since she doesn’t want a dainty girl like Abigail involved. Fortunately for Oei and Abigail, Ritsuka’s party arrives to help. After Medb retreats, Jeanne Alter asks Oei to give her art lessons. Oei, wishing to repay the group, agrees to teach Jeanne Alter.[10]

The day before ServantFes, Ritsuka and Jeanne Alter run into Jeanne d’Arc, Oei, and Osakabehime while looking for a fight to relieve some stress. But hearing that they’re all done with final drafts only serves to frustrate Jeanne Alter even further. Oei tells her to accept what she has drawn and put it together the best she can when the latter says she’ll start over. Then, learning why Jeanne Alter came outside, Jeanne helps her relieve her stress, having Oei and Osakabehime join as well. Afterward, she leaves with them, saying they need to change their schedules.

Later that night, the three girls enter Ritsuka’s party’s room, having been invited by Ritsuka to help Jeanne Alter complete her story in time. For her part, Oei draws the backgrounds that Jeanne Alter described to her, insisting she couldn’t have done it without the latter’s vivid description. Unfortunately, when the end is so close, she accidentally deletes all the data. Jeanne Alter tells Osakabehime to recover what she can and confirms with Robin Hood that he’s been making backups every 15 minutes. Everyone then crunches until morning and successfully completes the story. Osakabehime, Oei, and Jeanne all collapse from exhaustion afterward.

The day of ServantFes. Oei allows Abigail to help her, telling her to take the “Line Starts Here” sign and show customers where they need to go. Though she’s glad to see Abigail happy, she still feels bad about her helping out, given the club’s suggestive name.

Summer Event: Las Vegas Bout

Imaginary Scramble

Oei joins Ritsuka and Abigail Williams while the former is trying to cheer up the latter about being rejected as a participant in the Nautilus' test run. She originally thought to paint Ritsuka a treasure ship for good luck, knowing they'll be leaving for Nautilus' test run tomorrow. But seeing her fellow Foreigner depressed, she asks Abigail to paint with her. Abigail ultimately agrees, with Ritsuka staying up with the two Foreigners a while longer at Oei's request.[11]

Later, per the Evil God of Flowers' machinations, Oei is called to Imaginary Number Space unbeknowst to her by Van Gogh as their respective Outer Gods are allies.[12][13] In answering Van Gogh's call, Oei became much more amendable to the Outer Gods' desires, resulting in her Father-Daughter Bond Skill, which she used to resist the Outer God, to severely weaken and conversely her Item Construction Skill to vastly improved.[12]

Oei then became madly fixated with painting in Imaginary Number Space and decided she needed to get aboard the Nautilus no matter what. Her father wasn't convinced, though, so she knocked him out in her first instance of disobedience toward him. After that, she used Item Construction to bypass the ship's scans and easily stowed away when her vital signs were knocked out as a result of her Foreigner and Saber Spirit Origins fighting for dominance.[12]

Once she was in Imaginary Number Space, Oei proceeded to turn it into a sea, making it observable.[12][14] From there, she was meant to paint a temple dedicated to the Outer Gods where Chaldea's Foreigners converted to the Outer Gods' side by Van Gogh's De Sterrennacht would amass for an invasion of Earth. Oei had no interest in following the Outer Gods' orders, though, and only wanted to stay in Imaginary Number Space and paint. The Outer Gods, of course, wanted her to paint, knowing it would lead to her final manifestation and painting the temple they desire.[15][12]

To keep the Nautilus in Imaginary Number Space for long as possible, Oei created several obstacles, namely trenches and creatures known as Enemy Ships.[12][14] Additionally, she would disguise herself as a Marine, blending in thanks to the Nemo series' overreliance on sight and inability to detect her senses and thoughts. She also had her unconscious father act as an antenna to their Outer God.[12]

Oei (disguised as a Marine) is with Professor when Nautilus' hull is penetrated from crashing into a reef and the ship begins to flood with rainbows——Imaginary Numbers. Ritsuka saves them both (not aware of Marine's true identity) by teleporting them both to the control room with a Command Spell.[14]

By the time the Nautilus reaches the third area, Oei had created an Enemy Ship larger than the Nautilus itself. Said giant Enemy Ship destroys a landmass with an energy beam, the aftershock of which rocks the Nautilus as if to dissuade the crew from going any further. Nevertheless, the Nautilus proceeds further in.[16]

Later, Yang Guifei gifts good luck dolls to all the Marines, including the disguised Oei. She draws swirls on the cheeks of her doll in order to differentiate it from everyone else. Ritsuka runs into her while on patrol, learning she is the Marine they had saved from drowning, and sees her doll is different from the other Marines.[17] Sometime later, the crew destroy the giant Enemy Ship which they had dubbed Enemy Ship Alpha.[18]

When the Nautilus reaches the fourth and final area, Oei creates spatial gaps inspired by the ship's game board-like monitor, which reminded her of one of her own paintings, which depicted Guan Yu ignoring the pain of his wound while playing Go.[12] The Enemy Ships use the spatial gaps to hit the Nautilus with multiple stealth attacks.[19][12]

However, the ship soon becomes overrun with monsters spawned from Van Gogh's blood. After the monsters are slain, everyone gathers on the bridge. They argue about Van Gogh's innocence since her blood was used to summon monsters and suspect her of being Foreigner who created the spatial gaps. Minamoto-no-Raikou asserts Van Gogh is innocent, for there is no evidence that says otherwise. The Marines refuse to believe Van Gogh is innocent, though, and start a mutiny calling for her execution. The conflict overloads Captain Nemo into an unresponsive state.[12]

Xiang Yu then suddenly enters the room and uses his Noble Phantasm at minimum power to knock out the thirteen Marines. Ritsuka remembers there are only supposed to be twelve Marines and deduces the impostor is Oei, prompting the latter to remove her disguise. Oei confesses she is responsible for nearly every problem the crew has encountered, explaining her motive for doing so, how she knocked out her father when she disagreed, and how she was able to sneak onto the Nautlus. She has no loyalty toward the Outer Gods, though, and only wants to stay in the Imaginary Number Sea and paint all she can, so she requests Ritsuka to keep the Nautilus here for the next 200 years or so. Ritsuka refuses, leading to a battle between Oei and the crew.[12]

Pushed back, Oei confesses she came to the Imaginary Number Sea because a voice from its deepest depths was calling to her. She and Guifei start charging their Noble Phantasms when Van Gogh (she recently regained consciousness from an earlier battle with Ritsuka, Frankenstein, and Raikou) enters the room. Oei realizes Van Gogh is the one who called her, but she realizes she isn't Vincent Van Gogh. She tries to ask for her true identity, but Meltryllis knocks her out.[12]

Oei is locked up, but she seems to have regained sanity. Her father has also regained consciousness, though he allegedly doesn't remember anything. Additionally, Oei has been equipped with a Mystic Code that should counteract the weakening effects of her Father-Daughter Skill since it is believed Skill modification was how the Outer Gods influenced her.[12]

Ritsuka, Mash, Nemo, and Skadi later go to Oei to get her help on how to break through the shell of the flower that Van Gogh had become. After being reassured no one blames her for what transpired since she was forced, Oei agrees to help and reveals that the spatial gaps actually work like a real Go board, meaning any area they surround becomes their territory. Therefore, if the crew can make the area Van Gogh is in their territory by capturing the four surrounding gaps, they can warp inside her. Nemo says they will capture the four gaps with as few people as possible. Once that is done, they will go inside the flower and rescue Van Gogh at its center. Afterward, they will use Raikou’s Noble Phantasm to destroy the flower from the inside. Skadi decides the rescue team will consist of Raikou, Meltryllis, and Frankenstein; Raikou will assume torpedo duties, Meltryllis will be the escort, and Frankenstein will rescue Van Gogh. As for who will capture the four points, she decides it will be Guifei, Osakabehime, herself, and Oei.[20]

All the sudden, Van Gogh lets out a screech that shakes the Nautilus and implores the crew to stay away, sending out Enemy Ships in order to force them. She knows everyone wants to save her, but she believes they shouldn’t, considering herself too dangerous and feels she has no right to be with them.[20]

She is no longer certain of who she is, wanting to die because she is Vincent, but refusing to die because she is Clytie. But none of that matters, for she only needs to follow the Outer Gods’ orders to use her Noble Phantasm to deify other Foreigners. Even if her mind self-destructs due to overload, she can still fulfill her main objective by engaging her core consciousness and letting her divine form bloom. She is glad her life has a purpose even if she cannot stand it or herself, and is certain Vincent and Clytie would feel the same way.[20]

To the crew’s surprise, though, half of the enemy warheads contain A-rank explosives while the other heals, and if they weren’t hitting at the same time, the ship would’ve sunk long ago. Nemo realizes it is the result of Van Gogh feeling conflicted over whether to give herself over to the Outer Gods’ influence or rid herself of their influence. As a Phantom Spirit himself, he can tell she is trying to fight their influence. Ritsuka suggests to Nemo since that they’re both Phantom Spirits, maybe his voice can get through to Van Gogh.[20]

With Guifei amplifying his voice so it reaches her, Nemo asks Van Gogh to give herself a name so she may gain a sense of self. He promises her that, no matter what name she choses she will not be abandoned and she will be rescued. After a moment, all enemy projectiles are fully converted into support resources. Van Gogh then addresses the Nautilus crew, declaring herself Clytie van Gogh, telling them if they can accept that name she’d be happy if they saved her.[20]

Van Gogh is eventually rescued from the flower, which Raikou destroys from the inside with her Noble Phantasm. The Evil God of Flowers contacts the crew afterward. It accepts it lost due to lack of foresight, but it also claims the crew had refused their chance at the second-best outcome they could’ve hoped for: a peaceful, gentle destruction. It finds it a pity and bids the crew farewell.[21]

Now back on the Nautilus, Van Gogh begins the process of creating a Holy Grail, which will be used to return Imaginary Numbers Space to normal, so the Nautilus crew can leave, as well as prevent future invasions. While she is making it, though, she reveals she cannot use Le Père Tanguy, though she can still paint the picture. Ritsuka remembers it was Guifei who first brought up Le Père Tanguy when Xiang Yu suddenly tries to kill her. He fails and is defeated by Guifei's counterattack. He apologizes to Ritsuka that the rest is up to them and collapses.[13]

Guifei snatches the Grail Van Gogh just finished making. Raikou and Meltryllis try to stop her, but her flames keep them from approaching her, having carefully researched everyone so none of them could stop her at this precise moment. She then fills the bridge with a curse, which presumably prompts the Marines to suddenly grab Skadi, Osakabehime, and Meltryllis from behind. Guifei had planned for this exact moment and decided now to make her move now that she is overflowing with eldritch power (the Outer Gods' power source), which the Outer Gods used to bug out the summoning system and connect directly to the Throne. Guifei then changes into her third Ascension to demonstrate her allegiance to the Outer Gods.[13]

Van Gogh believes her usage of De Sterrennacht had turned Guifei into the Outer Gods' ally. Guifei corrects her that she was always their ally, revealing she came to Imaginary Number Space because she was called. Van Gogh refuses to believe that as the Evil God of Flowers only had her call out to gods of the same alliance and of those only Hokusai had answered. Guifei reveals her emperor had vacated a spot in the Throne for her so she could be summoned from it. She then calls Ritsuka her emperor, putting them in a trance.[13]

Unable to speak, Ritsuka is manipulated into commanding Guifei to bring forth depravity or destruction. Fortunately, Frankenstein destroys the good luck doll Guifei gave Ritsuka, allowing them to speak again. Ritsuka tries to rescind "their" command, but it is too late, as Guifei uses the Grail to hack the summoning system and summon Abigail Williams and Mysterious Heroine XX, though she could've sworn she summoned a third Servant. But believing the current number will suffice, she proceeds to infuse all present Foreigners with eldritch power, driving all of them (except for Van Gogh) insane.[13]

She declares that the Foreigners will now hold the Great Foreigner Festival Imaginary Number Sea Scramble Ritsuka "requested", a festival where they will vie for control of the Imaginary Number Sea, with the winner earning the right to rule over the next era on Earth. At her behest, the Foreigners (except Van Gogh) leave the Nautilus to take the Imaginary Number Sea for themselves.[13]

At his request, Oei allows her father to borrow her Spirit Origin so he can get a chance at painting in Imaginary Number Space. The Nautilus crew confronts Hokusai as the third Foreigner they need to restore the sanity of. They realize he isn't beholden to any eldritch power, though, and merely wants to test out his skills. Encouraged by Nemo and urged by Vincent's feelings and memories, Van Gogh proceeds to best Hokusai in a "painting battle". Afterward, she uses De Sterrennacht to return Oei's Spirit Origin to her, per Hokusai's request. Oei immediately apologizes for the trouble she and her father caused, but Van Gogh considers it a dream come true, and invites Oei to her room later to discuss art.[22]

Abilities

In life, Hokusai posssessed a vast collection of resources he used as a source of inspiration for his work. It is speculated that his link to an Evil God was born when he painted a sea devil described in a Grimoire from overseas related to the Sunken Spiral Castle.[7] Despite being Edo's most famous ukiyo-e painter,[4] Hokusai's Soul desired to keep growing as an artist even after death. Due to this, he rejected being added into the Throne of Heroes.[7] After the Demon God Pillar Raum bore a hole into the natural laws of the World,[6] an evil god from the abyss peered through it in an attempt to descend to the real world using Ritsuka Fujimaru's dream as the door.[6][7] Since Hokusai was a perfect vessel,[6] the evil god took advantage of him and turned him into a Foreigner.[7] However, despite the evil god being a stain up the World almost as terrible as BB,[6] Hokusai was able to prevent falling under its influence thanks to his Bond with his daughter Oei.[1][2][22] This is why Oei appears as the main frame, whereas Hokusai is just a small octopus instead.[citation needed]

Katsushika Oei believes that she's on a whole other level compared to other Servants by virtue of being a Foreigner. The reason for this is that they are supposed to be a Threat to Humanity.[11] Mash Kyrielight explains that Foreigners can turn the laws of the World on their head, however, Oei has kindly agreed to keep herself on check to help Chaldea with their mission.[14]

Combat

Oui uses a paintbrush approximately the size of her body to make paintings that can physical interact with the world. She has a collection of smaller brushes she uses as melee weapons, or throw them as projectiles. Her father also aids her by spewing the enemy with ink.[citation needed]

Just like most Foreigners, as Oei's connection to her Outer God increases, she manifests different Saint Graph Ascensions:

Illegal Modifications

Hokusai was one of the three Foreigners in the three-way race to invade Earth through Void Space during Imaginary Scramble.[15] At first, Hokusai couldn't opperate in Void Space,[15] however, this was fixed after tampering with their Saint Graph.[20] After transforming Toto into an antenna, the Outer Gods were able to illegally modify and weaken their Father-Daughter Bond, the ability Hokusai uses to fight off their influence, and in exchange, they significantly enhaced her Item Construction Skill.[12]

Due to having been linked to an Outer God, Oei's strength far surpasses the files Mash Kyrielight has seen in Chaldea's database. It takes the combined efforts of Yang Guifei and Mash to get Oei on the ropes. It isn't until Oei drops her guard down that Lambdaryllis is able to knock her out with a surprise attack.[12]

Skills

Class Skills

  • Item Construction (B Rank): Capable of creating beautiful paintings laced with mana that enchant people's hearts.[2]
    • During the events of Imaginary Scramble, this skill was significantly empowered by the Outer God to help them invade Earth.[12] Although Oei couldn't initially operate in Void Space on her own,[15] the outer gods' Illegal Modifications made her able to paint things into existence.[12][20] This allowed her to transform Void Space into an observable sea by mixing water and ink together.[14][12] She also created trenches and Enemy Ships,[14][12] the most powerful of whom could fire attacks comparable to A Rank Noble Phantasms or survive a dozen blasts from Summer Minamoto-no-Raikou's Śakra's Vajra.[16][24][18] Furthermore, Oei distorted Void Space to create gaps for the enemy ships to hide in known as Go Board Spaces. This was based on the original Go game'sWP principle of placing pieces on the intersecting lines between the squares rather than the squares themselves.[12] In time, she stretched her tentacles all over void space and painted pictures even as she was destroying logic and reason left and right.[15] Chaldea believes that had they not stopped her, she may have eventually succumbed to her madness completely and painted a temple for the evil gods to use as their outpost.[12] On the other hand, Yang Guifei speculates that the outer god's plan was to have her paint enough until she eventually got to the final manifestation.[15] This skill also allowed her to disguise herself as a Nemo Marine.[12]
  • Territory Creation (D Rank): Capable of creating a territory suitable for working on paintings. However, she will not clean.[2]
  • Divinity (B Rank): Having become the herald of a higher being from space, she has obtained a strong rank of divinity. There exists an unimaginable danger sealed inside Hokusai's body. In exchange for this, her father took the form of a strange octopus.[2]

Personal Skills

  • Father-Daughter Bond (A Rank): The bond between the hearts of Hokusai and Ōi - who remained together even in the artist's final years - won't be shaken even by the madness of an evil god.[1][2]

Noble Phantasm

Their Noble Phantasm is Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji‎. During the events of Imaginary Scramble, the combined efforts of Yang Guifei and Mash Kyrielight were able to press Oei to use her Noble Phantasm. This forced Yang to charge Marital Vows of Rainbow Skirts and Feather Robes, and Ritsuka Fujimaru implied that one of them would end up dead if the battle continued.[12]

Forms and Alternate Versions

Swimsuit

She doesn’t change whether she’s 3 or 300!

This is the Katsushika Ooi who was addicted to reading books since childhood, and came to admire the smokin’ sick style kind of lifestyle!

“I’m a rare female Ukiyo-e artist who’s astonishingly smart and quick witted! Clad in a glamorous kimono, I’m perfection itself!”

……Aren’t you bragging too much, Oei? (Father is here, too)

The grown up form of Ooi from her childhood, who wanted to be a storybook warrior more than an ukiyo-e artist.

Even as a frustrated painter, she hasn’t yet experienced divorce after marrying, and is confident in her artistic skill, proclaiming, “Eventually I will surpass my father, Hokusai!” with conceit. With a heart that wants to surpass her father, she calls herself “Katsushika Hokusai,” and is still quite immature. Still, there’s nothing her mature form has that she doesn’t. There exists a rumor that Katsushika Hokusai is the great-grandchild of Kobayashi Heihachirō, a swordsman and vassal of the Kira Clan who was defeated in the Chūshingura assassination, though the validity of this claim is unknown. If it is true, Ooi would be his great-great-grandchild. Even if Hokusai’s claim that he has some blood relation to one of the Kira Clan samurai of Chūshingura fame is to be believed, the “swordsman” act is an affectation. Additionally, it’s the result of believing wholeheartedly in delusions wrought by reading things like Kyokutei Bakin’s stories or Chinese novels such as Water Margin.

Relationships

Van Gogh
"Spinnin’ round ‘n round, almost dizzyingly… tremendously captivating. Ya sure paint some good stuff, lady Vincent van Gogh. Ain’t it just a bit too sad that the works of someone like this only sold in the handful in their lifetime? Guess I shoulda be thankful towards poppa together with the mister at the publishin’ house. Might be a bit intrusive of me but I'll also burden myself with that conviction of yours that led to ya to grip the brush even unto death, lady Gogh."[25]
Katsushika Hokusai (Foreigner)
"Gnnnngh...I don't like it one bit. That broad's boasting that she sealed me away because I was her dark past. Just seeing her face pisses me right off. Hey, you're on my side, right, Master? ...Huh? Try to be friendly with her as much as I can? Hmph! Only if I feel up to it!"[3]
"Whatta nasty lil’ broad. Keepin’ me sealed away as her embarrassin’ past and mockin’ me. Even just lookin’ at her mug gets me cross. Even though, well… ’s the same mug as mine. She carps about every damn thing I do… I mean, didya forget? The Xian soars, taking all she wants just as thrillingly as a strong man would! She does not overlook evil-doers, beating them to a pulp! She punches out pestilence, and surpasses even death itself! T’was the kinda Xian that you admired, wasn’t it? [25]
Kyokutei Bakin
"Do ya know ‘bout the stirring an’ exciting adventure story “The Eight Dog Chronicles”? This dude’s the great author who wrote it! He was an undisputed best-sellin’ author, and someone I can’t recommend enough! Was so excitin’ when I’d go playin’ at his workplace under the pretense of doin’ some work for my poppa. Speakin’ a poppa, he got into a big squabble with Ol’ Bakin who ever since won’t talk to me no more. If I wanna know the insider stories I got no choice butta ask my other self? Blegh."[25]
Suzuka Gozen
"Demoness of the Heavens, Suzuka Gozen… The totally chic ‘n new, gallant girl ‘a heaven! I know I tried showin’ off ‘n saying I too would build up my “Jay-Kay” power to imitate you but… t’was a bit much. Gotta thinka ‘nother approach, I thought. All ‘a sudden I ‘membered the great thief who pilfered over 3000 ryo—Nezumi Kozou and then it came to me! A blabber-mouth town girl at day who transforms into a heavenly phantom thiefess bounding across the expanse of Edo at night! So whaddya think, huh?"[25]
Minamoto-no-Tametomo
"The protagonist of Ol’ Bakin’s “A Wonder Tale: Moonbow” book! Through the roar of his bow so tightly strung it needed the strength of five men, he would sink anything to the bottoms of the sea, whether it be a battleship or a monster whale. Puttin’ it simply, my personal hero. I’d often make lil’ dolls of ‘im to play with. If ya wanna put ‘im up against a great hero in Chaldea then it’d be… hmm… Their weapons of choice in bow and sword ‘s a bit different but maybe Ol’ Siegfried’s a match…? Haha…"[25]

Abilities

Ooi uses the Oyo Muhen Tenkai Hishou longsword technique, which she developed when she was inspired by many famous waterfalls. It appears to be a rather acrobatic and agile type of swordsmanship, as she's able to slash her enemies while spinning on the hilt of another sword she impaled with. She is also fast enough to slash with one sword, catch it in a sheath, and immmediately switch to another. Her father also helps by attacking together with her, wielding two of her four swords he borrowed. Ooi also uses ink to either empower her sword attacks, or fire a ink beam from the tip of a sword.

Class Skills
  • Magic Resistance (C Rank): Cancels Magecraft with incantations of under two verses. Cannot protect against large scale magecraft like spell rituals or greater magecraft. This is about as far as some slapdash Neidan is going to take you.[25]
Personal Skills
  • Divine Power (Ink) (C Rank): Making a decoction of Fuling and drinking it, getting hooked on physiognomy, all under the pretence of it being training towards becoming a Xian. We’ve all had such a time in our youth—a period in which you get fanatically obsessed with something.[25]
  • Father-Daughter Affinity (B Rank): A father watching over his daughter. And the disjointed feelings of a daughter who wishes to surpass her father and be acknowledged by him![25]
  • Pseudonym: Dragon-Crested Octopus (B Rank): The abyssal madness of the Old One that encroaches upon his daughter’s Saint Graph and transforms it into his own tentacles. Will perhaps take it to another Class once their enthusiasm for moving around and travelling gets bad enough.[25]
Noble Phantasm

Her Noble Phantasm is A Tour of the Waterfalls of the Provinces.

Development

Creation and Conception

Katsushika Hokusai was designed by Kuroboshi Kouhaku in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Meteo Hoshizora in Fate/Grand Order.[25]

Comment from Illustrator

"I wanted to make her feel like she had adolescence on full display, unable to be controlled, all messy and stuff, basically just excessively colorful… So I thought of taking the feather garment of the Xians she admires so much and just turn it super flamboyant. After I assembled everything accordingly, this is how she turned out. It’d be a bit bad if she turned out too gaudy so I put in a lot of cute stuff in the patterning. In addition, I wanted to get some of that chuunibyou feeling out and so I mixed in a western sword among the 4 on her hips. She was really difficult to draw."(Kuroboshi Kouhaku) (Swimsuit Ver.)[25]
