Thia Escardos (ティア・エスカルドス, Tia Esukarudosu?) is a being created as the culmination of the 1800-year-old plan devised by Mesala Escardos of the Escardos family. Designed as a new Prime Species that would come into existence when the Magic Crest of the Escardos family is inherited by the Escardos family member who meets the criteria for Thia's manifestation, Thia deviates from this framework due to the unique circumstances of host Flat Escardos and instead normally acts like another self of Flat. Within the World of Fate/strange Fake, the conditions for Thia's manifestation arise with the death of Flat, resulting in Thia taking control of the body.[3]
Profile
Background
Thia's existence is the result of a plan left within the Escardos family's Magic Crest by Mesala; the goal was to make Earth's next "Prime Ones", the species that would stay behind and take over when either Human Order was over or humanity abandoned the planet.[4] Requiring the Magic Crest to remain unmodified until the appropriate successor was born, the plan was made with the intent that the successor would be a sacrifice.[3] Even with a gimmick put in place by Mesala at the conception of the Escardos family so they wouldn't intentionally interfere with the process once it was near completion by causing them to gradually forget their own purpose over generations, the final outcome is still close to a miracle.[4]
Flat and Thia shared the same body, but they were two different souls with different foundations. It is possible that Thia was the first to become conscious of the two, but the distinction ultimately isn't very important given the fact that his development used Flat's brain activity as a stepping stone. Upon inheriting the Magic Crest, Flat's consciousness was supposed to be completely erased by Thia according to the plot that was written 1800 years ago.[2]
While Flat was meant to be needless data to be deleted after playing his part, he actually noticed and knew of Thia who lived in the Magic Circuits that made up Flat since the moment Flat was conscious. Thia is certain that Flat's genius has nothing to do with it, and while Flat had the body in the perfect state, it was Flat's sharpness that allowed him to use Thia's eyes (the ability to see the flow of Magical Energy).[2] Since childhood, Flat has been able to see the flow of Magical Energy, an ability that his "other self", Thia, possesses. His own family at first believed he was having delusions, then assumed he had some unknown Mystic Eyes, but both theories turned out to be false. Flat's ability to see Magical Energy allowed him to survive his family's multiple assassination attempts on him.[5]
While he and Flat shared the body, Thia is incomplete prior to the implanting of the Magic Crest which holds his program. If he were to be discovered, he would be the one to be erased. Were this to happen, the one who holds the perfect body would be the one controlling the Magic Crest, leaving hope to the next generation as the second best outcome. Despite this, Flat did not erase Thia, even after finding out the truth and acquiring the means to do so. It was strange that Flat was offering a friendly hand to the one who was planning to erase him, because he was not offering himself for the sake of his family's ambitions. Neither the program nor Mesala asked Thia to be a proper Magus, just that Thia continues to exist after either the Human Order ends or the detachment of humanity off the planet.[2]
When Flat regained the Magic Crest, Thia gained all the knowledge that was in the Magic Crest and became sure of its mission. He attempted to erase Flat, but Flat simply gave it a smile and swore that they will always be together.[2]
Appearance
Inhabiting Flat's transformed body, Thia retains a number of aspects that resemble him.[2] The body serving as Thia's foundation is male.[1]
Personality
Thia claims to have been created by Mesala "for the sole purpose of existing", stating that nothing other than continuing to exist gives him meaning. When awakened, he sought to fulfill the greatest and final purpose that the Escardos family gave them, because it has no other reason to exist thus wishes to make its life meaningful. While he promises to live in the world on Flat's behalf, his goal is to continue to exist in the world and become a "True Human", even if he has to erase the species known as "humans".[3]
Thia is envious of Jack the Ripper, whose soul was mixed with Flat's in a much truer way. He is certain that it were him rather than Jack, he wouldn't have let Flat die. While Flat was more positive, Thia is more cynical. He openly admires Flat's mentor and his way of speaking. According to Thia, Flat saved his heart and swore that they would live together. While killing the snipers was just deserts for Flat's death and part of his mission, the extension of their dying moments through accelerating their consciousness to explain his motives for killing them was done both because he is a fan of poetry and melodrama, and as a tribute to Flat and his thoughts that if you have to kill someone, it's better to explain your reasons first. Due to the fact that human malice took Flat, Thia's sole reason to live, he decided to strike back to continue and prolong his existence for the sake of the one person who understood him and the sole person he swore to protect.[2]
Thia uses the Japanese pronoun boku (僕?) as opposed to the original Flat's ore (俺?).[3] His way of speaking is also slightly different from the original Flat's.[3] However, Thia seems to have inherited Flat's memories, such as seeing Enkidu create several anti-aircraft guns via Age of Babylon to fight him causes Thia to react in shock due to him recognizing them from the various movies Flat had watched. Similarly, his Incantation, Cheat on, is a tribute to Flat's own video game-inspired Incantations. The memories he inherited from Flat and his own attitude are often at odds. When one of his deflected attacks is sent to destroy HollywoodWP, he feels a pang of sadness as he knew it was somewhere Flat wanted to visit one day, but cancels out this emotion by reminding himself that Flat is gone.[2]
Thia could tell at first glance that Ayaka Sajyou wasn't human, and doesn't understand why Flat concerned himself with her, considering it a waste of time. After Flat's death, he would have killed her soon after if Enkidu didn't interfere.[2]
While the mission Mesala assigned to Thia was simply “to continue existing”, he is unsatisfied with this as a consequence of Flat’s lingering influence on him. He compares himself to the space junk orbiting the Earth which he had previously used as a weapon in his battle with Enkidu, simply existing and doing nothing. As he observes the revival of Ishtar from orbit, he finds himself pondering the question of “what would Flat do?”, unsure of the right path forwards, like a fragment of Flat Escardos debris.[6]
Role
Fate/strange Fake
While it was initially believed that it was a toy knife that summoned Jack, it turns out that Thia was the catalyst for Jack's summoning due to Thia's potential as a serial killer of humanity.[2]
Upon Flat's death at the hands of Faldeus Dioland, Thia emerges from Flat and takes over his body. When this occurs, Van-Fem says that Mesala's plan has reached completion by sacrificing Flat who had a future in order to obtain the past.[3]
Thia brutally massacres the Thorn soldiers who killed Flat, then destroys the entire surveillance network Faldeus set up around the city of Snowfield within only a few dozen seconds.[3]
Abilities
Thia is a being with a different foundation of existence and Soul from Flat Escardos. Flueger observing him describes him as an expanded Magic Crest on a level beyond those from ancient houses. He is a "something" equal in rank to a Heroic Spirit and more dangerous than the average one. He is an existence beyond reason, with a power that isn't that of a Magus or a Servant. Richard I speculates that he might be a high-level Vampire or Elemental, a mythical being from the Inner Sea of the Planet, or a Foreigner from beyond the stars. He claims that if that is the case, "things won't be pretty". Thia himself compares the kind of being he is to a demon, but clarifies he is not nearly as major an entity as a True Demon, instead being more like the fictional demon Jack can transform into.[2] The leaders of Faldeus' organization consider him the greatest risk factor in the True and False Holy Grail Wars, and threaten to destroy the entire city of Snowfield in 48 hours in order to deal with the threat he poses.[7]
Combat
The best way to describe Thia Escardos is as a torrent of power. A huge clump of energy, like a Heroic Spirit but somewhat different. Like a living tornado of Elements, repeating the cycle of compressing the Elements of its surroundings, accelerating them, and immediately bursting them back out. Taking water as a metaphor, it could be described as a hydraulic jet cutter shaped to a specific form. Its amount of water is nothing compared to a giant waterfall, but with enough speed, its spray becomes a fluid blade capable of splitting rocks. Likewise, Thia is a torrent of Magical Energy circulating at high speeds with enough intensity to crush Souls.[2]
Thia can use Magical Energy from the atmosphere to power his attacks or modify his own body, as seen when he grew a pair of wings. During the True and False Holy Grail Wars, he made use of Snowfield's rich air, or perhaps the land's leyline resources allotted to the Holy Grail. Borrowing Holy Grail War terminology, the sheer Mana he concentrates in one place could plainly be described as a "Noble Phantasm". This form of Magecraft consisting of Magical Energy manipulation bypasses Incantations, Formulas, or any kind of procedure. This image alone would be enough for the Lords of the Clock Tower or the high-ranked engineers of the Atlas Institute to figure out what the boy was.[2]
Thia vs Enkidu.
When Thia Escardos first attacks Enkidu, the violent whirl of Magical Energy around him twisted space. Enkidu was able to disperse the condensed Mana with his chains by filling up all the space that would have been dislocated away otherwise. Enkidu notes that a serious battle between them would take the whole area as collateral damage and decides to activate the True Name of Age of Babylon to push back Thia. Thia tried to attack before Enkidu could finish his Noble Phantasm's activation chant, but noticing the massive Magical Energy approaching him, he redirected all the accelerated energy toward defense. As Enkidu's thousands of blades approached, Thia used Time-Flow Manipulation to create a Mana barrier that pulverized the weapons on contact. By immediately reading and hacking the Magical Energy in Enkidu's Noble Phantasm, he absorbed it into his circulation of energy. Furthermore, he also manipulated the Magical Energy without destroying them, sending them flying back to Enkidu's body. However, Enkidu blocked the barrage of weapons with a rampart. Thia then tries to destroy Enkidu's barrier with beams of Magical Energy in high-speed rotation. There is a power limit to a raw beam shot by a Human Magus, but through some kind of process, the beams he shot were hundreds, thousands of times above this ceiling. While Enkidu could block those beams by changing the rampart into a dome, Thia bypassed it soon after. He converged countless beams of light into a monster made of magical light which was able to open a hole in the multilayered barrier with just two bites.[2]
When Enkidu attacked Thia with a giant Anti-Aircraft gun formed with Age of Babylon, Thia counterattacked with high-density Magical Energy blasts adjusted for the sole purpose of destruction. Had Enkidu not blocked it with his chains, it would have reduced the tallest building in Snowfield to bricks in an instant.[2]
After he effortlessly massacred the Thorn soldiers who killed Flat, Thia destroys the entire surveillance network Faldeus set up around the city of Snowfield within only a few dozen seconds,[3] a vast network that encompassed both security cameras placed all over the city and patrolling magical Familiars which had been connected to the organization's computers.[8]
Thia is able to use high-grade Concealment Magecraft, which he tries to use in order to fire off a giant ball of space debris to hit Snowfield behind Enkidu's back, hiding it from both sight and Magical Energy detection. Although Enkidu isn't able to sense the attack directly, they quickly notice the neutral spot left in the maelstrom of Magical Energy the fight has caused with their Presence Detection and is able to deflect it off the course.[2]
Even before Flat's death, Thia had some sort of incorporeal presence alongside him and could see through his eyes, though only Flat could actually see him.[5] While both Van-Fem and Zelretch were aware of Thia's existence,[9] it is unknown if they could physically see him the way Flat himself could.
While Flat can create a new Thaumaturgical Foundation from scratch to perform any result, Thia simply memorizes all the previous Foundations and applications Flat had already made to replicate them, with his calculations reaching similar results that Flat would reach by intuition.[10]
Skills
While possessing a profile detailing Servant Parameters, Skills, and Noble Phantasms, this profile is just an interpretation as if Thia was a Servant.[1]
Class Skills
- Magic Resistance (EX Rank): His technique to interact and negate Magical Energy is A+, but if you can find a way around that, it's only B.[1]
- Independent Action (A++ Rank): That much is obvious because he's a living being, but even if he was a Servant, he would still be able to operate for a long time.[1]
Personal Skills
- Time-Flow Manipulation (A Rank): He can freely speed up or slow down any concepts (including all Magical Energy, physical movement, thought speed, etc) within his area of effect for as long as he has the Magical Energy for it. However, the increase or decrease of speed stops at reasonable levels, meaning it's naturally impossible for him to produce perfect stasis, light speed, or time reversal.[1] Through Thought Acceleration, Thia accelerates his consciousness to the limit. Naturally, time isn’t truly stopped, so his movements are slowed down accordingly, making the air around him feel viscous like an ocean of tepid muck. However, Thia accelerates the Od running through all his Magic Circuits, propelling the Mana around him into sudden acceleration and putting it in circulation. Magical Energy accelerates ludicrously as if it had an external rocket engine placed in addition to its own internal combustion engine. And yet, the Magical Energy flows with perfect artistic elegance. While this may seem like a new form of Magecraft created on the spot, in reality, it isn’t. It is an impromptu orchestra of numerous Magecrafts, from basic to advanced. This was Flat Escardos's preferred form of Magecraft. A most troublesome system that could improvise ideal results but made it nigh impossible for the user to faithfully reproduce them a second time. By combining numerous Thaumaturgical Systems, Thia can explosively accelerate his nerves and limbs and constantly regenerate the cells and joints destroyed by these sudden bursts of speed. He applies layers upon layers of Magecraft on his own body with no signs of burdening it, seeming as if his own body was a form of Magecraft. The difference between Flat and Thia is reduced to Frame and engine. If Flat was a minicar with the latest digital controls, Thia is a fictional mobile weapon: a never seen before drive machine with the resistance of a tank, the energy reserves of a battleship, and the propulsion of a jet. Working backward from this "fictional weapon" example, Flat's geniality could be described as what would happen if a computer built for the sole purpose of processing a simulated object was suddenly able to operate this object.[2]
- Dweller of the Demonic Sphere (A Rank): A skill that represents being able to perceive the real World by its magical structure and interact (analyze, modify, absorb, etc) directly with its flows and sediments. He sees all forms of Magical Energy flow overlapped with his physical vision, similar to how it is with the phenomenon that makes electromagnetic waves visible. It's not Mystic Eyes, as it also affects his hearing and other senses. It's impossible to even walk properly for someone who didn't obtain this Skill from birth and didn't grow up accustomed to this kind of scenery.[1] This ability allows Thia to determine Enkidu's and Ayaka Sajyou's true nature.[2]
Noble Phantasms
Thia Escardos's first Noble Phantasm is A Clockwork Abaddon, a magical accelerator cannon performed by imbuing an object with Magecraft, accelerating the object to its limit, and launching it at the target.[1] During his battle against Enkidu, Thia used it to gather together space debrisWP from outer space and fire numerous "moons" with masses ranging from 500 kilos to dozens of tons moving much beyond the speed of soundWP. Thia's attack was possibly perceived as a Threat to the Planet or Human Order. Due to this, Enkidu's parameters got a temporary boost and they fired Enuma Elish. Through the power of the Counter Force poured into their Noble Phantasm, Enkidu managed to block the massive attack on Snowfield. However, they didn't neutralized the whole attack. Quite a few meteor pieces slipped through the magical petals and landed on Earth, although scattering during their fall. The second largest meteor vanished 12% of the ArcticWP ice caps in an instant.[2] According to a news broadcast report, it's estimated that 500,000 square kilometers of ice were lost, which is a block of ice the size of SpainWP evaporated in minutes. If that thing had fallen anywhere other than the North PoleWP, it would have had an irreversible effect on Earth’s rotation.[11] The largest one would have destroyed Snowfield had it not been redirected by Enkidu and ultimately got eaten by Gugalanna.[2]
Thia has a second an unknown Noble Phantasm obscured in his profile.[1]
Development
During the development of The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, Ryohgo Narita and Makoto Sanda decided that in that timeline Thia would emerge from the death of Flat's younger sister rather than Flat himself, though this won't actually be seen in the series.[12]
