ArtemisWP (アルテミス, Arutemisu?) is one of the Twelve Machine Gods appearing in the Atlantic Lostbelt in Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Background
Formally, the Long Range Interstellar Battlecraft Artemis (狙撃型星間戦闘機・アルテミス, Sogeki-gata Seikan Sentōki Arutemisu?). Within the world of the Lostbelt, there was a shift from the Proper Human History in 12,000 BC that ultimately led to the Age of Gods continuing into the modern day. After surviving the Olympiamachia, Zeus reprogrammed her to serve as one of Atlantis' three defense layers, placed in low orbit as a kinetic bombardment weapon, mercilessly judging and striking down any external threat to Olympus.[3]
Personality
Role
Fate/Grand Order
Prior to the arrival of Chaldea, Artemis killed Heracles with her Noble Phantasm, requiring two shots to do the deed but ultimately breaking Jason's confidence.[4][5]
Atlantis: Ocean in the Age of Titans
A week after Orion was summoned, an Artemis terminal was sent down to see him. Her insults towards him indicated to Orion that she wanted to fight. However, she only wanted to see him, given that he's why her Proper History self is different. She let him live, but would not let him aid Proper History. She tells him to swear on it or she will destroy Hestia Island. Orion concedes on the condition that Artemis can't kill in front of him. The Artemis terminal explains she is only an observational unit without any combat capabilities, but she will blow herself up if forced. She then leaves, saying she'll continue observing Orion, interested in what attitude a demigod like him will have towards the Lostbelt.[6]
When Odysseus' forces are devasting Chaldea, Artemis fires at the Nautilus on Odysseus' command.[7] Later, an Artemis terminal meets Orion while he's camped at Hestia Island, where they reminisce about their first meeting. She criticizes his exploits as being only about flirting with women and eating meat, as well as for using his powers to live freely. Calling such a life inefficient, she questions why her Proper History self fell in love with him. The conversation then turns to Chaldea. The Artemis terminal knows they landed on Hestia Island, though she didn't report it to the main unit as Artemis would've destroyed the island. She warns that Chaldea has been tracked to Heracles Island, so Artemis will fire her main cannon there. Orion decides to go there, but the Artemis terminal warns he won't make it in time. So, instead, she offers to use part of her Authority to teleport him there. Orion questions why she's helping him since he's going to help her enemies. She replies it's because she felt like it, unable to help herself from smiling with Orion.[6]
Orion and the Artemis terminal arrive on Heracles Island to warn the villages there about Artemis' impending attack. Her presence causes the villagers to prostrate themselves before the goddess’s terminal. She warns them again about the main unit's attacks, saying they need to evacuate to another island.[8] When Chaldea and their allies prepare to escape the island on the Golden Hind, the Artemis terminal refuses to board the ship. She knows the main unit will track and fire upon them if she does. For that reason, she'll stay behind, nor does she want to cause Orion any more trouble. She reasserts she isn't Artemis but one of her many terminals. She is glad, though, that Orion treated her as an individual. She then bids him farewell, telling him that he's more precious when smiling. After Chaldea leaves, Artemis arrives on the island proclaiming humanity's only value is to serve the gods. The terminal asserts that is a mistake, but Artemis ignores it. She declares it was unforgivable for humans to build civilization and proceeds to obliterate the entire island with a single shot.[2]
Later, Artemis prepares to destroy Perse Island. While Hephaestus' defenses attack her to buy Chaldea time to escape, she asks him why he's aiding the Proper History. Hephaestus replies it's because he saw a possibility there. Artemis accuses him of treachery, but he asserts it's their role to offer up a better future. Artemis asks him if he's saying Zeus is wrong, to which Hephaestus replies that is why the Servants rejected the gods. The fact that the Servants of the Proper History didn't side with the god is proof enough the Lostbelt has been denied. Artemis rejects this, saying humans only fear their own destruction. Hephaestus partially agrees but counters some humans fight fearing something more their own destruction, calling them heroes, a concept that was lost in the Lostbelt a time ago. Artemis, enraged, rejects this and cuts the communication with the smithing god, destroying the island afterward.[9]
With Odysseus' demise, Artemis' restrictions are gone, so she is able to fire her arrows as many times she desires.[10] When Chaldea arrives on Nemesis Island, Orion fires the Aegis Eclipse (the bow forged by Hephaestus for him) at Artemis, piercing her armor to expose her core. His second shot clashes with her beam, but Artemis reconfigures her main cannon to be anti-Hephaestus. She fires a faster charging beam to neutralize the second shot.[11] She readies a third shot when Hector is summoned which is neutralized with Durindana, and a fourth that is barely halted by Mandricardo with Durandal. As Orion prepares to fire upon her again, Artemis asks him why her Proper History counterpart looks happy in his memories. Orion answers it's because she loves him, which Artemis finds unpleasant. She fires a beam in response to Ortygia Amore Mio, despite knowing it was pointless. She doesn't understand why Orion chose to destroy her. After being struck by the Noble Phantasm, Artemis finds Orion's love for her counterpart contemptuous, yet she is jealous. She considers giving her terminal autonomy but decides against it because she accepts Orion's arrow was his love for her. Briefly viewing a conversation between Orion and her Proper History self, Artemis understands he helped her before finally being destroyed.[12]
Abilities
Combat
Artemis spends all of her time patrolling Atlantis, five-hundred thousand meters above the ground level.[11] Rather than orbiting the planet like a satellite, she can control her movement to move freely. Da Vinci states her technology far surpasses anything humanity had as of 2019.[2] After conducting a few different experiments, the Servants from Proper Human History summoned by the Counter Force in Atlantis concluded that Artemis is simply far beyond them. They all tried taking her down with their Noble Phantasms, but not a single one of them came close. And it wasn't only because of the distance. Their attacks all disappeared on their way to her before ever reaching her. The reason for this remains unknown even to Hephaestus. It is only possible to reach her from an island situated directly beneath her.[5]
Even if an attack does reach her, Artemis's armor is so thick even a Noble Phantasm on the level of Super Orion's Orion Hórkos is not physically able to destroy her.[2] Even if Orion were to power himself up with Theos Klironomia, it would still have no effect.[13][14] In fact, Hephaestus received a computing error when trying to calculate the amount of Theos Klironomia that would be required to reinforce Orion's power to levels sufficient enough to harm her.[13] Only a Divine Construct, a weapon that has been imbued with a conceptually high ranking Divine Spirit can destroy Artemis.[13][14] A weapon such as the sword of the Dark Saber encountered in Fuyuki.[13] This is the reason as to why it was necessary for Orion to aquire a new bow forged by Hephaestus using Achilles' Divine Armor as a raw material.[9] Furthermore, a Machine God like Poseidon or Artemis can only be killed if their weak point, their Divine Core, is destroyed.[15] This is the reason why Orion needed two arrows, one arrow to eliminate her defenses, and the other one to destroy her main unit.[9] Being further buffed by Da Vinci's spells, to the point where she claims he'd drop dead as soon as they wear off, Orion successfully managed to destroy her armor with Orion Hórkos fired with Aegis Eclipse, leaving her core exposed. However, Sherlock Holmes states that the shot only succeeded because it took Artemis completely by surprise. When Orion fired the second shot, Artemis was able to react in time and intercept it with her own Noble Phantasm.[11] When Artemis faced Orion's Ortygia Amore Mio however, neither intercepting the arrow nor evading it were plausible options.[12]
Because Artemis is also the goddess of madness,[16] she possessed a Spiritron Information Warfare Functionality;[17] the Authority to control others minds.[16] When she used this precision mental attack on Caligula it resulted on his madness being inverted, making him rational. This led to her assuming that all Heroic Spirits of Proper Human History possess some kind of mental protection, so she changed to massive orbital bombardments instead.[16]
Noble Phantasm
Artemis's Noble Phantasm is her main cannon, Shooting Star Ortygia. This was a weapon designed to shoot down intergalactic vessels and is powerful enough to destroy entire planets.[7][8] According to Odysseus, it is as powerful as Lord Zeus himself.[8] It is also stated to rival Kirschtaria Wodime's Grand Order/Anima Animusphere, who Zeus also sees as his equal.[18] When Artemis used it against the Servants summoned by the Counter Force, Heracles blocked it, protecting everyone else. However, even with all their Casters buffing him to "kingdom come", he could still only take two shots before he used up God Hand and died.[4] If the Servants hadn't happened to be spread out at the time, and if Heracles hadn't been there, she would have easily wiped all them out in an instant.[5] Although Super Orion's second Orion Hórkos arrow fired with Aegis Eclipse was powerful enough to overcome Shooting Star Ortygia, tearing right through it, it was still not enough. Artemis simply fired her primary canon again before the arrow could reach her divine core, completely turning it to dust.[11] Orion was able to finish her off with Ortygia Amore Mio. Although Artemis tried to intercept it with her own Noble Phantasm, Orion's arrow tore through it, killing her.[12]
She can analyze the structure of her targets defenses to adapt and reconfigure her arrows to be more effective.[11]
Forms and Alternate Versions
Terminal
Artemis can deploy multiple terminals, something close to their Familiars, each possessing their own personality and consciousness separate from the main unit.[8] They work as observational units to usually report anything out of the ordinary to Artemis on orbit.[6] The one that Super Orion met claims to be nothing more than a four-digit model number that came after the main Artemis unit's name.[2]
Personality
Artemis develops a feelings for Super Orion despite not understanding initially what her Proper Human History counterpart saw in him.
Abilities
Terminal Artemis doesn't have any combat capabilities of her own, and she is to self-destruct if the situation gets dire. Since the Sea of Atlantis is part of the gods domain, she is therefore authorized to exercise partial Authority within it. This allows her to teleport herself and others that make physical contact with her to other islands.[6] Artemis was also able to read Orion's mind and see his memories.[12]
