Profile
Identity
The true form of the Heroic Spirit summoned under the name of Artoria Caster. As one who existed solely within the British Lostbelt, Artoria Caster vanished into the Inner Sea of the Planet after fulfilling her role.[5]
Her appearance in her First and Second Ascensions are but an emulation of the way of being of a "departed someone", which created her. They are not the memories as a Fairy of Paradise, but the memories of spring from when she traveled as the Child of Prophecy.[3]
Artoria Avalon is the one who offered herself to casting the Holy Sword, consequently becoming the very concept of a Holy Sword after having consecrated her body to it. She is not King Arthur but rather a nameless king who renders assistance in battle, whether it be the past, present, or the future, as long as there exists someone who requires a Holy Sword.[3][5]
Oberon wonders if Artoria Avalon is Artoria Caster's future form, or if she became a special guardian.[5]

Personality
She is a perfect recreation of "the girl who went on a pilgrimage with the Master of Chaldea". An emulation based on "what if that girl was still alive right now". Although, because she is the result of a sincere transformation by the guardian of Britain and the concept of the Holy Sword, Artoria Avalon, there is no falsity in neither behavior nor reactions.[3]
- Merlin
- "Merlin? My magecraft teacher, the one who pushed Cath Palug to me against my will and say "Sorry, I leave it to you" upon leaving, that Merlin? Uhn, the one here is a bit different. In any case, please inform him that "I will decapitate him the next time we meet each other". I have figured out a magecraft to deal with those who are unable to die. I think if that person was to die at least once, he would have no choice but to change his nature."[4]
- Oberon
- "Fairy King Oberon. My sworn enemy, my compatriot. Despite the same fantasy, but I don't know people, and he knows people too well. If it can be.... Once again..."[4]
- "The Insect of the Abyss is a dark cave made in a large tree. A dream of falling where life, death, and value are lost, and one continues falling. Slapping the looks of Alice, who fell into the void, on her, who jumped into the void, is an unavoidable thing, isn't it?"[6]
- Senji Muramasa
- "Huh? Why won't Muramasa come to swim? ...He doesn't have a swimsuit Spirit Costume? Doesn't his first Saint Graph look like a swimsuit? Please take him here at once."[6]
- Melusine (Swimsuit)
- "Albion shouldn't be able to swim... I see, she has specialized in aerial battles, and prepared herself for never entering the sea. Proper Human History's Artoria may be a Dragon Kind hybrid, but she's a cheeky dragon. Her versatility and degeneracy may be the greatest, but... Isn't she too free?"[6]
- BB Pele
- "I've done something to BB that I feel sorry about. I'll use this oportunity to apologize. However, I'm the persistent heroine that comes back stronger every time she's beaten. Looking at the long term, won't this humiliation become a plus?"[6]
- Archetype: Earth
- "The True Ancestor princess... She's the planet's soul, designed as a vessel of the satellite that is a mirror... In the end she was summoned with a Saint Graph, but it's promising that she's here. ...No? I'm not saying that she's reliable as an ally. If she turned into an enemy she'd be ten times more selfish than as an ally."[6]
Role
Fate/Grand Order
Avalon le Fae: Fae Round Table Domain
Nahui Mictlan: Golden Sea of Trees Travelogue
Artoria Avalon has a brief cameo in game fight, where she appears as a placeholder for the Grand Saber U-Olga Marie fought and defeated.[7][Note 1]
Abilities
Artoria Avalon is a Artoria Caster's Heroic Spirit form as an Avalon le Fae.[5] She's a supporting device for the Human Order, which aids "those who oppose a threat that endangers the planet".[3]
While their circumstances may differ, Artoria Avalon is the same kind of existence as the Throne of Heroes itself which allows her to choose and dispatch Heroic Spirits of her choosing. It is through this right that she was able to bring forth Cnoc na Riabh as a Heroic Spirit with the asisstance of Morgan out of personal favoritism.[8]
Artoria Avalon was able to wake up Super Mash from her dream inside the Insect of the Abyss' stomach.[5]
Combat
When she becomes Artoria Avalon, she can use many of her treasured swords as Catalysts for Magecraft.[3] These swords include:
- Shadow-Treading CarnwennanWP (影踏みのカルンウェナン?)[1][3]
- Lightning Flash Spumador (稲妻のスピュメイダー?)[1][3]
- Mythological Mystic Code Marmyadose (神話礼装マルミアドワーズ?): A large sword that has the appearance of a staff. It was forged by a God of Fire and granted to great heroes in the past. It is said that this sword exceeds Excalibur in power alone, and during times when King Arthur would lend Excalibur to Gawain, she used this large sword as a substitute.[1][3]
Artoria Avalon claimed that she and Ritsuka Fujimaru needed Super Mash's help to defeat Oberon Vortigern in close range combat. Thanks to all three of them teaming up, they are able to deal serious damage to Vortigern's Spiritual Core, making him fall from the Storm Border's deck. According to Artoria, the Holy Sword is a double-edge blade for Vortigern. It is both a source of sustenance and poison.[5]
Noble Phantasm
Artoria Avalon's Noble Phantasm is Round of Avalon. She manifests the Camelot of Twilight and bestows the gift of a "Knight of the Round Table" to those who fight alongside her.[3]
Forms and Alternate Versions
Swimsuit
Summer Artoria Caster's third Ascension is the "Guardian of the Holy Sword" and is named A.A. Normally, Artoria Caster and A.A. can be said to be "the same being," but for this occasion only, they have been divided into two and are working as separate individuals.[9]
Development
Creation and Conception
In Nasu's first draft for the British Lostbelt, Artoria Avalon was going to become Grand Saber.[10]
Comments from Illustrator
"I also wanted to give her a fitting final stage, so her third ascension had its concept completely revamped, attempting to give her a new design based on “an Artoria who mastered magecraft”. As work on this design progressed, I really did feel like all the different experiences I’d gotten via FGO came together, and it gave me a sort of special emotional attachment to this project." (Takashi Takeuchi)[3]
Notes
- ↑ During LB7, there is a game fight where U-Olga Marie fights the seven Grand Servants. The gameplay scene is meant to serve as an interactive representation of the dream where U-Olga Marie regains some of her memories prior to being attacked by Kukulkan and Tezcatlipoca. The seven Grand Servants featured in Gameplay are: Grand Saber Artoria Avalon, Grand Lancer Romulus-Quirinus, Grand Archer Super Orion, Grand Rider Taigong Wang, Grand Caster Merlin, Grand Assassin First Hassan, and Grand Berserker Tezcatlipoca. However, these game enemies are only placeholders for the actual Grand Servants that Olga defeated. For example, First Hassan, Super Orion, and Romulus Quirinus had all discarded their Grand Servant status prior to that fight. Furthermore, Kinoko Nasu explains that Tezcatlipoca appearing as Grand Berserker was just a hint that he had held that rank prior to King Hassan stepping down. Artoria Avalon being Grand Saber was also discarded in the LB6 storyboard.
