Kondou IsamiWP (近藤勇WP, Kondō Isami?), Class Name Saber (セイバー, Seibā?) is a Saber-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru during the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Kondou Isami was born to farmers in BushūWP but managed to join a group known as the Rōshigumi (浪士組, the ronin squad?) alongside his acquaintances, Okita Souji and Hijikata Toshizou, in 1862 to be bodyguards for the shogun. There he met the friends who would eventually become the core members of the Shinsengumi.[1]
After the Roshigumi split apart in 1863, Kondou remained in Kyoto and reformed the group into the Shinsengumi police force. With his unusually high level of leadership, the commander served as the pillar of the squadron, exercising his shrewdness to great effect.[1][3][4]
Kondo Isami became the sole Commander of the Shinsengumi after his former co-Commander Serizawa Kamo was assassinated by Hijikata, Yamanami Keisuke, Saito Hajime, Harada Sanosuke and Okita for his poor leadership. Upon gaining fame at the Ikedaya IncidentWP, he had his contributions to the shogunate acknowledged and was officially appointed as a vassal. However, the times favored the forces trying to overthrow the Shogun.[1][5][6]
In 1868, after the Tokugawa forces lost the Battle of Toba-FushimiWP, The Shinsengumi, renamed to the Kōyō Chinbutai (甲陽鎮撫隊, Pacification Corps?), moved to Edo and were driven out when they attempted to fight in KōfuWP.[1]
In NagareyamaWP, Kondou finally surrendered and was captured by the new Japanese government. There was some inner conflict within the new government over what to do with Kondou, but ultimately, he was beheaded in ItabashiWP at age 35.[1][4]
Appearance
As a result of his altered Saint Graph, Kondou's appearance has distanced itself from what he originally looked like and thus he typically appears in the form of the Black Swordsman.[1]

Personality
"The man Kondou Isami is nothing but a coward." Kondou believes these words to perfectly describe him. He believes that it was while it was easy to call himself a martyr to his creeds, he was ultimately a fool who chose nothing, saved nothing, and was carried by the flow of the changing times as he watched his friends die.
Kondou was left broken down and ultimately tried to find redemption in self-sacrifice by surrendering to the new government, but he considers even that to be nothing more than a consequence of his neglect of responsibility. He considers it a rather mean-spirited irony that he would find himself marked in history as the commander of the Shinsengumi and brought into the Throne of Heroes as a Heroic Spirit.
It's due to this rejection of his own existence and the Shinsengumi that he normally would never respond to a summon despite his being a Heroic Spirit.
He would've been fine with it if it had only been him but due to his former friends being chained by a fate that could be considered the "curse" of the Shinsengumi, he came to be summoned to the Kyoto Singularity, ragefully lamenting the fact that they gained the Saint Graphs of Servants. Thus, he took up his sword once more and started the events of the Kyoto Singularity to put an end to it all.
"But I'm still always a coward. At the last second, I betrayed my companions again. That's the fool I am. Who would gather at the flag I raise? Even then, I had to raise the flag. Yes, it was the time for it. Yes, because that was the word written in my heart that fateful day… That was the one sincerest truth. We wave the Flag of Sincerity!"
The Shinsengumi's oath goes beyond the distance, and their sincerity goes right here.[1]
Relationships
- Okita Souji
- "You want to know if I can fit my whole fist inside my mouth? Ridiculous. I'm no child to be boasting about such a thing. What? Souji told you I did? Ugh…"[2]
- "Souji, it's been too long since our last match. I mean, I've never won against you before. Yeah, it was thanks to you that I learned how blue the sky truly was. I'm really glad I can now cross swords with you again."[2]
- Hijikata Toshizou
- "Toshi, care for a competition to see who gets to be the first in charge in the next battle? Heh, that reminds me of our wild days in Tama. I don't know what you gained from being Berserker, but it's not enough to beat me."[2]
- "Toshi… I haven't been the easiest leader to deal with. Heheh, forget it. You've never changed since that day you've barged into Tama to beat up all the brats. Yeah, let's get wild like that again, just you and me and Souji."[2]
- Toudou Heisuke
- "Heisuke, it's too late for my apologies to mean anything to you. Come to slay me whenever you want, I take no issue with it. But next time, I'll show no mercy. Are we agreed?"[2]
- Nagakura Shinpachi
- "Nagakura, I'm glad we get to serve as swordsmen under the same lord. No, this is not working… I got it, can we watch together those moving pictures you love so much?"[2]
- Yamanami Keisuke
- "Yamanami, I know you might think it's not in my place to apologize to you. Even then, I want to apologize. I'm sorry for what we did. And I'm impressed you came back to us. Let's make right of this second chance, and devote ourselves to our lord together."[2]
- Saitou Hajime
- "Saitou, sorry for the unfavorable role you had to play. Still, thank you for helping Toshi. Heh, you have never changed since the day I first met you at the Shiei dojo. Lend your free-spirited swordsmanship to the Shinsengumi once more."[2]
- Serizawa Kamo
- "Milord, Souji told me you met Serizawa. Yes, he was the strongest of all. Could I hear the whole story? Excuse me, Yamataikoku? Pardon the intrusion, but how does that relate to Serizawa?"[2]
- Harada Sanosuke
- "Harada, I hear that you moved to the mainland. How about you tell me about over a drink? Ahahaha, let's make it a night of homage to the great heroes of China."[2]
- Kawakami Gensai
- "About Kawakami? I can't thank her enough. It's due to her that we were able to band together at the right time and place. Besides, even just remembering it now, her swordsmanship gives me shivers. If I ever get to cross swords with her again, I'll try my best to evade her first cleave. If I'm capable, of course."[2]
- Lu Bu
- "Lu Bu, the greatest man of the Three Kingdoms, is here? Heh, of course I don't believe I can contend with him one-on-one. Wait, maybe it could be fun to charge at him with Toshi and Souji, much like the three brothers once did."[2]
- Red Hare
- "Milord, I don't know if it's true, but I heard that the steed of the famed Guan Yu is present here. Huh? You think I don't want to meet him? Don't be like that. Not everyone has the privilege to see Red Hare… Ah, don't go away, please!"[2]
- Sima Yi
- "I hear the famed Sima Zhongda is here in Chaldea. If possible, I'd like an introduction and lessons on his inscrutable stratagems. That woman? How is she invol-? Ah? Do you mean she is Sima Zhongda?"[2]
- Artoria Pendragon and Mysterious Heroine X
- "That radiant sword must pack incredible power. Excalibur? King of Knight? No, not this one. The one next to her with the cap. So, what is her name? …Heroine what? Did I hear you right?"[2]
- Shiki Ryougi (Saber)
- "Milord, who is that woman in kimono? Lady Shiki Ryougi? It's nothing, I simply feel something immeasurable in her posture and conduct. Her katana must also be special. Hm, she has a katana collection? We already have a great conversation topic, then."[2]

Abilities
Despite his farmer origins, he was gifted for combat and was allowed to train at the Tennen Rishin-ryu dojo. His capabilities were acknowledged, and he became the inheritor of Tennen Rishin-ryū at the tender age of 28.[1]
As a result of the events of the Kyoto Singularity, Kondou has become a Heroic Spirit with an altered Saint Graph which houses the power of Magatsuhi-no-Kami. In addition to the excellent swordplay he originally had, the dark swordsman has control over the Divine Spirit's magical energy, enabling him to wield overwhelming power.[1]
Notably the Divine Spirit's power is so potent that Kondou occasionally finds himself having to suppress it to prevent it from raging wildly out of control within his own body.[2]
Additionally, he has access to Coat of Oaths which all Shisengumi members possess as a Noble Phantasm.[3]
