Caenis (カイニス, Kainisu?), Class Name Lancer (ランサー, Ransā?), is a Lancer-class Servant of Kirschtaria Wodime appearing in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order. She is also summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru.

Profile

Identity

Caenis is the name of CaeneusWP (カイネウスWP, Kaineusu?) before she wished to become a man.[4] A warrior and tyrant found within Greek mythology. As a member of the Argonauts, Caenis went on many an adventure with the crew. It is said Caenis was once a woman and later became a man.

In the past, Caenis was undoubtedly a true woman, renowned as one of the most beautiful maidens in Thessaly. At one point after turning down numerous courters, Caenis lost her chastity to the sea god Poseidon (Neptune). Satisfied, the sea god offered to grant her all of her wishes, to which Caenis asked to no longer be a woman so she may never be violated ever again. Caenis then became an invincible man, according to legend.

It is unknown if Caenis actually became a man due to some tales left behind. In one story, Caenis is said to have become a bird with golden wings after dying and disappeared into the skies, but another tale says the corpse of a woman was left behind. Either way, the subsequent Caenis/Caeneus became a mighty warrior and showed the world a powerful tyrant that could rule the lands.

Appearance

At the end of life, Caenis turned into a magnificent bird with golden wings. In Caenis’ current appearance, that same tale has intertwined into a Noble Phantasm. However, there is a chance of the special trait of being able to change appearance at will going out of control. This tale may be the source of why Caenis has a female body and also why Caenis’ body has animal characteristics.

Although she currently has the physique of a woman with a more masculine face, different characters refer to her with both types of gender pronouns. Kirschtaria and Kadoc Zemlupus use male pronouns, while Ophelia Phamrsolone uses a male pronoun but corrects herself to a female one.

As Caenis’ ascension progresses further and further, the Noble Phantasm which consists of Poseidon’s protection and blessing becomes more and more present; Caenis notably gains horse ears likely as a result of Poseidon's influence due to him being the god of horses. From this Caenis becomes closer and closer to regaining the form held when once alive. In other words, an unparalleled existence with a magnificent suit of armor that reminds one of Poseidon.

In addition to whether Caenis literally became physically male in human history or not, Caenis’s gender on a personal level is unclear. On one hand, she seemed frankly disappointed by not being summoned into her male Saint Graph, usually uses the masculine personal pronoun ore (オレ?), and reacts violently to jokes about seeming feminine. However, her dialogue with Da Vinci indicates she does not relate to the idea of transitioning in gender to make one happier with their overall self, or finds it strange, though this may be because Da Vinci chose to become female. In one of Caenis's Bond Level Lines, Caenis uses the feminine personal pronoun watashi (私?) when reminiscing about her past.[5]

Gameplay-wise, in Fate/Grand Order, Caenis is treated as a Feminine-Looking Servant of Unknown gender.

Personality

Though holding enough anger to have aptitude as an Avenger, Caenis can be cheerful, engaging in light conversations even when not in a good mood. She also has a fondness for sweets and is open to discussing more about the topic. However, her inner rage can become uncontrollable, leading to extreme and violent behavior on par with a Berserker. Her behavior in this state also puts the Master at great risk of getting caught within her frenzy.

Wodime's charismatic demeanor, along with his plan to elevate humanity to godhood and reshape the Age of Gods, resonated with Caenis, despite her hatred for deities, especially Poseidon, who is the focus of her anger. She greatly supported Wodime and vowed to display the protections and blessings of the sea god endowed in her body as a Noble Phantasm to their fullest.

Similarly to Mordred, Caenis displays impulsive behavior, a short temper, and a straightforward attitude. Her past experiences has made her resort to physical and potentially sexual threats. She can be candid at times, believing Musashi must be a bad person because they are so similar to each other.

While initially appearing as a "might makes right" figure, Caenis reflects the flaws of ancient Greek heroes. She has both suffered from and wielded tyranny and divine powers, which might contribute to her emotional and risky tendencies.

Interestingly, Caenis upholds the principles of Xenia, the Greek concept of hospitality. She also conceals a vulnerable and hidden frail side to her that is still in pain from her past trauma with Poseidon, and likely the closest link to her original feminine character.

Role

Fate/Grand Order

Anastasia: Permafrost Empire

Caenis is a Servant under Kirschataria Wodime, implied to have earned her cooperation by defeating her. Kirischtaria sends her to observe the "Anastasia" Lostbelt, in case Kadoc is unable to handle the situation with Chaldea.[4]

Caenis later meets with Kadoc and Anastasia, provokingly questioning if Kadoc is able to handle the burden of raising the Lostbelt. Kadoc, however, is confident in his abilities, believing that he and Anastasia will be the victors in the end. Caenis is convinced by Kadoc's answer, promising to tell Kirischtaria that he is doing fine and also noting that the King of the Russian Lostbelt is truly a top-class monster on par with the chief deity under Kirschtaria. Caenis also asks about Chaldea, with Kadoc saying that they have appeared and he will deal with them. Caenis then leaves, presumably returning to Kirischtaria.[7]

Götterdämmerung: The Eternal Flame Century

Caenis appears in Scáthach-Skadi after the latter ceased the fight between Ritsuka's party and Sigurd. Frustrated she hasn't killed anoyone in the last few months, she decides to kill Ritsuka, impressed that they killed Ivan the Terrible. Napoleon Bonaparte defends them and he is defended by Sigurd as Skadi doesn't permit killing. Caenis is ready to fight Sigurd when she realizes his true identity. She then delivers Kirschtaria's message about how the Crypter's goal is to rewrite human history with the Alien God's help as well as establish a new Age of Gods and how Chaldea cannot hope to restore Proper Human History so long as his Lostbelt's Fantasy Tree, dubbed Atlas by Zeus, remains for its root cover 80% of the planet. Following the message, she threatens to kill Skadi when the latter nearly recounts Poseidon raping her. Ophelia demands she return straight to Kirschtaria, having heard a number of Heroic Spirits from Proper Human History had appeared in that Lostbelt's ocean with Poseidon gone. Caenis agrees to return to the Atlantic Lostbelt, saying she needs to check in on Artemis. She expects Ritsuka and Mash to succeed and have grown stronger when they next meet.[8]

As Surtr heads for the northern mountains with Ophelia on his shoulder, Caenis expresses disgust and disappointment that someone like Ophelia is a Crypter. Annoyed by the whole situation, she prepares to return to the Atlantic Lostbelt. She finds it unbelievable that Skadi allowed Surtr to resurrect, but Koyanskaya say Skadi's inability to conceive of his resurrection is why the Lostbelt was pruned. She doubts Skadi would have do anything about him even if she knew of his relation to Sigurd, though. Caenis wonders if Skadi is the type to let nature run its course or if she pities Ophelia. Koyanskaya comments that Skadi's way of thinking limits the Lostbelt's potential. She then leaves, expecting to see Caenis again in the Atlantic Lostbelt. Caenis comments that Koyanskya thinking herself as irreplacable just means she'll die sooner than she realizes. She tells the absent Koyanskaya not to assume every Lostbelt is on her side, calling her "pet."[9]

Atlantis: Ocean in the Age of Titans

Caenis takes part in the Atlantean forces' ambush on the Chaldeans when they emerge in the Lostbelt. She immediately attacks the Chaldeans as soon as they create a lull in the waves of monsters birthed by Echidna. The Chaldeans try fighting her only to realize she is invincible at sea due to something Poseidon had granted her. Then, per Odysseus' plan, Caenis retreats but not before telling the Chaldeans that she'll at least make their deaths painless.[10]

Later via hologram, Caenis reports to Kirschtaria on the seeming sucess of the operation to eradicate Chaldea, recalling how they first bombarded the Chaldeans with the Odysseus' fleet, then finished them off with one of Artemis' arrows. She jokes that if they somehow survived, she'd be impressed enough to join them. Kirschtaria advises her to watch her words as they have meaning and tells her she might have been too generous with her praise. Caenis is at first confused by what he means when she recognizes that smirk on his face. Immediately, she demands Odysseus explain what happened quickly.[11]

Odysseus admits he suspects the Chaldeans might still live, given his men have yet to locate their bodies, and likely escaped to Hestia. Caenis now questions the necessity of the operation since she could have killed the Chaldeans herself, not understanding why Artemis had to get involved. She asks Odysseus how he intends to redeem himself, wondering if he'll offer his head as an apology like his otherself did. Odysseus coldly answers Caenis that he doesn't answer to her and that only Zeus and his close ally Kirschtaria can punish him. Kirschtaria reassures Odysseus that he has no intention of blaming him and praises him for the operation and his direction. Odysseus thanks Kirschtaraia for his even-handed decision and returns to his search.[11]

Castor admonishes Caenis for failing to kill the Chaldeans. Pollux tells Caenis that she is to return to Olympus and thoroughly cleanse herself before she is granted an audience; Castor is certain Zeus will punish her for her failure. Kirschtaria tells the Dioscuri to stop, saying he'll deal with Caenis himself. The twins agree to back off since Kirschtaria insisted, but Castor tells Caenis she is nothing more than a useless attack dog if she cannot do her duty and to never forget her debt of gratitude to Kirschtaria. He and his sister then leave.[11]

Caenis swears to kill the Dioscuri, not caring what Zeus will do to her. Kirschtaria calls her name twice, causing Caenis to snap back and threaten to kill him. She calms down herself, though, when Kirschtaria asks her what she wants and she answers that she wants to reject Proper Human History completely, which is why she joined Kirschtaria in his scheme in the first place.[11]

Pleased, Kirschtaria tells Caenis there is no need for her to return to Olympus. He will tell Zeus himself that she is biding her time for a chance to clear her name. So, for the time being, he wants her to remain on standby under Odysseus' command until the latter locates Chaldea. Caenis begrudgingly agrees to go along with her Master's plan. Kirschtaria leaves after telling Odysseus to inform him when he has located the Athena Klironomia.[11]

Odysseus is incredulous by how rude Caenis behaves toward her own Master. Caenis insists, though, that she is holding back as she knows it's pointless to get truly angry at Kirschtaria since nothing said ever seems to faze him. Odysseus asks her if she is afraid Kirschtaria might terminate his contract with her should he tire of her rebellious nature, given she isn't his only Servant. Caenis admits she wishes that would happen because then she'd be able to have a proper fight with Kirschtaria and make him pay dearly for "slapping a collar" on her. She then leaves, leaving Odysseus perplexed about the relationship between Caenis and Kirschtaria[11]

Odysseus later tracks the Chaldeans to Heracles Island and reports it to Kirschtaria. Surmising they're after the Theos Klironomia, Kirschtaria is impressed by the Chaldean's resilience and thinks Koyanskaya would be amused by the news if she were in Atlantis. On the topic of Koyanskaya, Caenis asks where she is, thinking the Alien God punished her for her failure in India. Kirschtaria denies Koyanskaya was punished and says he is having her monitor the polis for the time being. The Alien God also wouldn't interfere with Koyanskya's affairs, as a hierarchy doesn't exist between them. But Koyanskaya is neither friend nor foe to the Crypters, with Kirschtaria calling her a vermin they'll need to exterminate when all is said and done. Caenis thinks they should kill Koyanskya before it's too late.[12]

Caenis asks Kirschtaria if she can go kill the Chaldeans now. Kirschtaria's silence make her impatient though prompting the Dioscuri to mock her for her bloodlust, to which she insults them back. Both look to be raring to kill each other when Kirschtaria demands his Servants to behave themselves. Caenis angrily presumes Kirschtaria will send the Dioscuri instead of her, but Kirschtaria says that none of them are going. He then informs Odysseus that Zeus has authorized the usage of Artemis and orders his Servants to be on standby on one of the islands neighboring Heracles Island. Caenis leaves complaining about not getting to fight.[12]

Later on Odysseus' ship, Caenis eavesdrops on a conversation between him and Kirschtaria about the latter going after Chaldea himself accompanied by the Dioscuri only for his own protection. Furious, she shows herself once the conversation is over and recalls to Odysseus how when they formed their contract, Kirschtaria told her he expects to fight only two more times. It enrages that one of those times will be against the Chaldeans, considering them weaklings, and leaves to find and kill them before Kirschtaria can.[13]

Caenis ambushes Ritsuka's party on their way to Thetis Island. She is at first impervious to their attacks until Jason nullifies the invincibility granted to her by Poseidon's blessing with Poseidon's Divine Core. Jason then gives the Divine Core to Orion, who uses it to greater effect since he is Poseidon's son. Caenis is defeated and starts disappearing. She implores someone to help her, as she still has debts to repay. Orion, not wanting to take any chances, moves to destroy her Spirit Core when Kirschtaria arrives and traps the heroes in his Bounded Field. At his command, the Dioscuri take Caenis away.[14]

The Dioscuri insult Caenis for her hateful nature and because of that she could never understand Kirschtaria’s goal of bringing about a new Age of Gods. They then finish her off, supposedly on Kirschtaria’s orders, and leave her to sink down into the ocean. As she sinks, Caenis protests that she hasn’t finished what she wanted to do. She hasn’t yet avenged the miracle of her being summoned as a Heroic Spirit, nor has she gotten the chance to kill the gods. But most of all, she needs to pay Kirschtaria back for putting a “collar” on her, crying out his name in a rage.[14]

Olympus: Interstellar Mountain City

Caenis drifts into Olympus from Atlantis and is detected by the Storm Border crew.[15] Goredolf Musik has her rescued and places her in the recovery pod without restraints, then gives her a regular bed once she recovers. He originally sought to heal Caenis only a little bit and negotiate with her while she was still weak. However, she recovered faster than expected, so Goredolf changed his plan to begging Caenis to help Ritsuka, whom the Border crew had lost contact with, as she was the only person they could send.[16]

Goredolf enters the medical bay and attempts to bribe Caenis with a freshly baked croissant, claiming to have no ulterior motive, but Caenis had the conversation he had with Meuniere outside the room. Goredolf insists she is indebted to him for rescuing her from the brink of death, admitting to his original plan. But now fully recovered, Caenis threatens to end negotiations by threatening to kill Goredolf if he has no other leverage besides saving her. She is impressed (albeit upset she wasn't the one who did it) when Goredolf reveals Chaldea defeated Poseidon, though, and offers him five minutes to flee before she kills everyone.[16]

But Goredolf refuses to abandon his crew out of guilt that he was responsible for Earth's bleaching and Chaldea's destruction, admitting it was wrong of him to blame Chaldea when they resolved the Human Order Incineration and believes it'd be better if he hadn't become its director. He doesn't want to be a traitor to humanity or a useless coward, which is why he refuses to run.[16]

Believing he can cut a deal with her, Goredolf then offers Caenis the croissant with tea and milk. Caenis, amused Goredolf would try to win her over with food, eats the croissant and agrees to fulfill any reasonable request he asks of her. Goredolf asks for her help and the fragment of Artemis, complete with her Klironomia, she has. Caenis gives him the fragment, and Goredolf leaves the room with it. Goredolf then returns and asks Caenis what she thinks of Kirschtaria as a person.[16]

Half a day later, equipped with a communications relay from Leonardo da Vinci, Caenis ambushes and kills the Olympian soldiers that were about to kill Ritsuka's party, whom the soldiers blame for Demeter going hysterical all the sudden. Furthermore, she used Poseidon's Authority (the same type as Demeter) to neutralize the immortality granted by Demeter, thereby ensuring the soldiers remain dead.[16]

Goredolf contacts the heroes, relieved to see Caenis found the heroes. He explains Caenis was given a communications relay Da Vinci built to boost their connection and allow for real time communication. He orders Ritsuka to make use of Caenis to defeat the Machine Gods and cut down the Fantasy Tree. Caenis threatens to kill Goredolf for saying to "use" her, prompting a terrified Goredolf to remind Caenis that she is indebted to him and that she agreed to do whatever was asked. Caenis tells the Chaldeans that she will kill them once she repays her debt to Goredolf. More soldiers show up and, refusing to believe she is alive, attack Caenis under the belief that she is an illusion cast by the Chaldeans. Caenis helps the heroes fight the soldiers.[16]

After the soldiers are killed, Caenis uses Lapithai Caeneus to keep Demeter off balance, allowing the others to topple her within the Seven Link Heroic Spirit Cannon's line of fire. The cannon's blast doesn't expose her Divine Core as hoped, but her armor is no longer invincible, and Caenis has negated her healing. The heroes work together to expose Demeter's Divine Core, but her regeneration has restarted in spite of Caenis' attempts to neutralize it. But then Caenis gives Ritsuka a new attachment for the Ortenaus designed by Da Vinci and Sion Eltnam Sokaris: Black Barrel. Ritsuka passes it to Mash, who installs and uses it to kill Demeter after Ritsuka charges it with a Command Spell, but Ritsuka faints from exhaustion afterward.[16]

Caenis later joins the heroes in going to the locations of magical energy distortions for the twins, Adele and Macarios, to place summoning circles at to create a great summoning circle per the Godbreaker Alliance's ultimate goal of summoning a Grand Servant to defeat Zeus.[17][18] The first distortion is at a crowded street, which glows the moment Adele cast the spell to establish the summoning circle. This causes the citizens to flee into their homes and draws the attention of the Mass Destruction Devices. The heroes fend off the machines until Adele finishes establishing the summoning circle. They then proceed toward the second distortion, dealing with an ambush along the way.[19]

Unfortunately, they discover that the distortion had been moved. Caenis and Caligula go off to search on their own while the rest stay together. Later though, Caenis ambushes Koyanskaya with a falling strike while the others were fighting her after Sherlock Holmes deduced she is an immature Beast who has a non-interference contract with the Alien God. Mash assumes that attack had killed Koyanskaya, but she is immediately proven wrong when Koyanskaya shows she has nary a scratch on her. Koyanskaya leaves promising not to mention this encounter to either the Crypters or Zeus. With her gone, the second distortion is detectable again, confirming she was the one who moved it. Caligula reconvenes with the others, and then the heroes proceed toward the final distortion.[18]

Arriving in the East district, the heroes are hit by Aphrodite's mental attack, causing Holmes and Miyamoto Musashi to go berserk and attack the others.[20] Fortunately, Caligula uses his Noble Phantasm to cancel out Aphrodite's attack, returning Holmes and Musashi's mental states to normal. Afterward, the heroes take the alliance's Stymphalides Blackwing aircraft to confront Aphrodite directly high up in the sky.[21]

There Golden Huge Bear is summoned, the summoning of which serves as a test run for the great summoning circle before it summons a Grand Servant. It then grabs Aphrodite, and the heroes fight her, eventually damaging her skin. Aphrodite tries to use her song to get Golden Huge Bear to loosen its grip, but it is immune thanks to being essentially a newborn and electrocutes her with Giga Golden Spark. Mash then kills Aphrodite with Black Barrel.[21]

The heroes get ready to return to base for some much needed recuperation when they're attacked by the Dioscuri. They try fighting the twin gods, but their light speed movement proves too much, so the heroes escape using a combination of Caligula's Noble Phantasm and the twins' smokescreen spell and return to base. There Scandinavia Peperoncino reveals himself to be another helper of the alliance's collaborator. Kadoc (another of the collaborator's helpers) sent him to inform the heroes that the Great Summoning Vessel, which will serve as the catalyst for the grand summoning, is almost ready.[22]

Following the coordinates provided by Peperoncino, the heroes soon arrive at Prometheus-Hephaestus' workshop. Caenis demands he give the Great Summoning Vessel, threatening to kill him afterward for mentioning Poseidon around her. But all the sudden, without anyone noticing, Senji Muramasa sneaks up behind Caenis and touches her spear. Muramasa confesses he is currently prioritizing Prometheus-Hephaestus' requests over his duties as an Apostle of the Alien God, so for the moment he is neither enemy nor ally to Chaldea. Caenis, annoyed by the situation, goes into spirit form to rest until things get interesting.[23]

Later after Prometheus-Hephaestus forges the Great Summoning Vessel Aether, the workshop is infiltrated by Limbo and the Dioscuri, who tracked Europa (the alliance's secret collaborator) to it. Castor attacks the heroes, but Caenis suddenly materializes and blocks his attack. She then attacks Pollux, which Holmes follows up by hitting Castor with a magical light beam that lets him know the Dioscuri cannot nullify all forms of light directed at them. The others then join in to help fight the Dioscuri.[24]

Minerva tries to disrupt the Dioscuri's connection to the divine-made leyline with dissonant noise. But Limbo drowns out the noise with his magecraft then he destroys Minerva to ensure it doesn't happen again. Afterward, he infects Prometheus-Hephaestus with shikigami insects to erode his data. However, his erosion of data was just a ploy to get Europa to lower her guard as he instantly takes her hostage the moment she implores him not to kill Prometheus-Hephaestus. He teleports away with her so she may face punishment for her treachery, but not before she tells Mash to remember her last gift.[24]

The Dioscuri are incredulous the alliance would use Tartarus—Olympus' underground infrastructure—and deem death to be the only suitable punishment for this transgression. Castor rants about how weak and foolish humans are, comparing them to insects. Pollux agrees with her brother, earning Adele's disgust for Pollux being nothing but a yes-man to Castor. Both she and Ritsuka agree that killing humans simply out of spite is something humans do, not gods.[24]

Holmes deduces the Dioscuri's massacre of the alliance was all because they hate humans. Castor confesses his hatred stems from the fact that in Proper Human History it was the faith of humans that turned him into a human and degraded his sister into a demigod. It also disgusts him that humans continue to thrive despite how weak they are and considers it unforgivable they'd deem themselves rulers of the Earth. Macarios is disgusted that the Dioscuri killed his and his sister's friends and family for such a petty reason, but Castor considers it reason enough to kill their species.[24]

Caenis, understanding now the Dioscuri are misanthropes, realizes they "killed" her back in Atlantis because Castor resented the fact she became a Divine Spirit and obtained Poseidon's trident. Kirschtaria also only trusted the twin gods to keep to their petty hatred. Pollux, enraged by Caenis' insults, attacks the heroes with her brother.[24]

Unfortunately for the Dioscuri, they quickly learn that Mash had been infused with Athena Klironomia, allowing her shield to act as a pseudo-Aigis. Caenis's Spirit Origin was also tweaked to be in better synch with Poseidon's Authority, allowing her to wield the power of Poseidon's trident through her spear. Leading the charge, Caenis attacks the Dioscuri alongside Mash and Musashi.[24]

Out of desperation, Castor uses his Authority to move faster than light to instantly take Ritsuka hostage, though he damages his Spirit Origin in doing so as the Dioscuri cannot truly use their Authority now that they're Divine Spirits. He offers to release Ritsuka in exchange for Mash decapitating herself with her own shield. However, he quickly releases Ritsuka upon realizing they are the Black Barrel's ammunition. Caenis takes this opportunity to wound the Dioscuri allowing Mash to secure Ritsuka. Then at Caenis' behest, Macarios and Adele kill the Dioscuri with a spell derived from the powers of Athena and Hades.[24]

All of Olympus later hears Zeus' announcement that Europa will be publicly executed at the Olympia Dodonda's great shrine at noon today for deicide. Ritsuka, Mash, and the twins all decide to rescue Europa even knowing it is a trap. But then the base is attacked by waves of soldiers, and after defeating the first wave, the heroes decide it is best they abandon the base and proceed to escape to the surface. Caenis reminds Goredolf that her debt to him will be repaid once Zeus is dead. Goredolf accepts that and informs the heroes the Storm Border will be right behind them once they take to the skies to reach Olympia Dodona.[25]

Fending off Olympus' forces[25], the heroes board the Stymphalian and fly toward Olympia Dodona at top speed so they can get there in under a minute. A blockade bars their way, but Caenis destroys it with Poseidon Maelstrom empowered by the aircraft's Hephaestus and Athena Klironomia. Unfortunately, the Noble Phantasm causes the aircraft to lose control. The heroes crash-land in the great shrine's perimeter gardens with nary an injury and proceed down the Machine Corridor.[26][27]

They soon stop, though, when they detect Limbo. He summons Cerberus, which the heroes slay. Musashi then cut Limbo's head off, but she knows it is useless as Limbo's body is a shikigami. Regrowing his head, Limbo decides to stop for today even though he'd love to endlessly toy with the heroes and wonders how they'll fare against Zeus, whom he tried and failed to kill. Caenis, tired of his incessant talking, slashes at Limbo. Limbo laughs it off because no matter what happens to his shikigami, he can't be truly harmed and boasts his life extension technique is invincible. But then Peperoncino suddenly appears and, as revenge for what he did to the Indian Lostbelt, casts a Shugendō spell on Limbo that renders the latter's life extension technique through his shikigami inert, ensuring his next life will be last. Limbo's shikigami disintegrates, cursing Peperoncino.[27]

After slaying a sudden pack of Phantasmals (during which Peperoncino left), the heroes eventually reach the great shrine where they see Fantasy Tree Magellan and the Cronos Crown. Zeus manifests before them and forces them to kneel before him with a gravity field. He deactivates it though upon sensing Athena, Ares, and Poseidon's power from Mash, Musashi, and Caenis, respectively, all of whom resisted the gravity field enough to stand up. He asks Ritsuka and Mash why they've come to his Lostbelt, amused when they answer they've come to cut down the Tree and take back their world. To commend them for their bravery, Zeus then sics a mind-controlled Europa alongside Talos on the heroes, intending to have them carry out her execution instead of himself.[27]

The heroes destroy Talos, and Holmes gently incapacitates Europa. Zeus activates his Alethia and unleashes a powerful lightning storm that all but destroys the great shrine. Mash activates the Aigis to protect everyone against Zeus' lightning bolt. The heroes hold out against him longer than he expected, so Zeus proceeds to deactivate a number of Authority limiters. Intending to destroy everything, Zeus reveals his intention to absorb every last spiritron within Magellan before ■■■■■■ manifests within it and then covert Olympus into a spacefaring colony, taking only the traces of Earth's lifeforms with him. With 37% of his Authorities released, Zeus readies to unleash World Discipline Keraunos to wipe out all life on the planet.[28]

But at that moment, Golden Huge Bear attacks Zeus, but it is blocked by the countless Authorities protecting Zeus and atomized with Hades' Authority. However, through a spell that uses the Spirit Core fragments of the defeated Servants, Caligula's bonds acting as a materialization guide, and Golden Huge Bear acting as a catalyst, Ares is chain summoned from Proper Human History, inexplicitly in his original crimson Aletheia. His summoning means the Aether has been activated and it is used once more to summon Grand Lancer Romulus-Quirinus with Caligula acting as the catalyst.[28]

With Quirinus and Ares' help, the heroes injury Zeus. Europa regains consciousness and implores Zeus to stop, believing he loves humanity just like his Proper Human History counterpart. Zeus, however, reveals he has no love for humans, unlike his counterpart, and readies an offensive Authority to kill Europa. But as a result, Zeus lowers his defense, giving Mash the opportunity to kill him with the Black Barrel.[28]

The moment Zeus dies, though, a rift in space opens up in the sky, from which Chaos peers. Quirinus and Ares instantly protect the heroes from the faster than light beam Chaos fires, with Quirinus deploying a Bounded Field while Ares sacrifices himself by using own body. Chaos has come to carry out Zeus' will in his stead, but it is apathetic toward Earth and its highest priority is preserving the fleet. It therefore prepares to use the Cronos Crown to absorb every resource on the planet's surface, which will render the planet uninhabitable.[29]

Musashi declares that she can defeat Chaos by closing the rift it is looking through. Ritsuka and Caenis try to stop her from taking on Chaos on her own when the Storm Border arrives. Musashi explains the situation to the crew and jumps on top of the ship. Convinced of her resolve, Ritsuka gives their consent to Musashi's plan, and the Storm Border heads for the rift. With Quirinus' help, the Storm Border soon reaches the rift whilst counterattacking Chaos' beams to protect Musashi. There, Musashi unleashes her ultimate attack on the rift, sealing Chaos away forever at the cost of her existence.[29][30]

With the gods all defeated, Caenis’ debt to Goredolf has been repaid. She contemplates killing the heroes while they’re mourning Musashi, but Quirinus knows what she is thinking and reminds her that her Master wouldn’t want to end things through such dishonorable means. Caenis insists she was only thinking about it since the heroes looked so pathetic.[30]

She announces to the heroes that she will be returning to Kirschtaria now that her debt has been repaid. She considers it worth it to be Kirschtaria’s Servant and tells Ritsuka and Mash that he’s worth fighting and fighting as hard as they are. After giving directions to Kirschtaria, she warns the twins to leave while they still can if they want to live long as possible, noting that she and the Chaldeans will fight to the death no matter what. The twins, however, refuse to leave as they swore to end this world. Caenis accepts their answer and leaves, declaring she will kill them and show them what a “real” Master looks like while she’s at it.[30]

Rejoining Kirschtaria before Magellan, Caenis alongside her Master and Limbo waits for the Chaldeans to arrive. When the Chaldeans arrive, Kirschataria welcomes them and gets Limbo to back off by getting the latter to realize he is the last shikigami of the real Limbo. He then congratulates the Chaldeans on their victory over Zeus, impressed they didn’t lose a single member of their team, provoking Ritsuka for not counting Musashi since she is not from Proper Human History.[30]

He declares it is too late for the Chaldeans to cut down Magella as it is now complete and using half of its power to protect itself, making interference form the outside impossible. As it is now Zeus, who was directly connected to it, and Kirschtaria, who has the right to use it as he sees fit, are the only ones who can make Magellan die. Therefore, the only way to cut down Magellan now is to defeat Kirschtaria and so he and Ritsuka and their respective Servants do battle.[30]

Soon, however, Kirschtaria pauses the battle for the Alien God has begun to descend to occupy the hollow of the now mature Magellan and use it as their vessel on Earth. But much to Limbo's anger, Kirschtaria had summoned had summoned Titan Atlas to occupy Magellan's hollow long beforehand. Kirschtaria reveals he was never loyal to the Alien God and he had always planned to double cross it. Limbo tries to kill Kirschtaria for his treachery, but Caenis immediately interrupts his casting. The two then head off somewhere to continue their battle.[30]

Caenis overwhelms Limbo, surprising him that she had been hiding her true strength all this time. Caenis is irritated the battle took longer than she expected when she notices something happening to Magellan (it is burning thanks to Beryl Guts' machinations). She wonders if the Alien God is interfering again, but Limbo surmises it is Beryl's doing. He concludes that Olympus is done for, meaning the perfected Alien God's advent has been delayed. He proclaims his true self will resolve the matter should he choose and . Caenis hurries to her Master's side.[31]

She comes crashing in, interrupting Beryl's attempt to murder Ritsuka. She sees Kirschtaria is bleeding profusely and urges him not to die before she can pay him back, reminding him he still needs to make the gods obsolete and do something about the Alien God. Beryl offers Caenis territory if she becomes his Servant, but she refuses as she deduces Kirschtaria's wound was his doing. Both seem ready to fight when Grigori Rasputin tells them further infighting is pointless with Chaldea's victory.[31]

He is disappointed to hear from Caenis that Kirschtaria is a traitor. He further deems Beryl an enemy of the Alien God after Beryl admits the British Lostbelt King made the Rhongomyniad specifically for the Alien God and to destroy Olympus. Beryl, fearing for his life, has Koyanskaya warp him out of the Lostbelt.[31]

At Rasputin's behest, Muramasa cleaves Atlas in half, allowing the Alien God, Beast VII U-Olga Marie, to manifest through his bisected Spirit Origin. U-Olga Marie creates a black hole to destroy the Lostbelt. Kirschtaria urges the heroes to escape while he drives U-Olga Marie back. The heroes leave, but Kirschtaria needs Caenis to confirm they are indeed gone for he can no longer see. Letting him on her, Caenis along with Rasputin then watch Kirschtaria use his Sirius Light to expel U-Olga Marie.[31][32]

As the Olympia Dodona collapses, Caenis kneels down beside Kirschtaria, whose lower body had been obliterated, and expresses amazement at what his Sirius Light did, as Ophelia did nothing close to it. Kirschtaria reveals that what he did was how the Sirius Lights were meant to be used. Changing the subject, he then confesses he was shocked and a little jealous when he learned how quickly she joined Chaldea’s side. It made him wonder if it meant she would join anyone who defeated her.[32]

Caenis, denying she was defeated, confesses she helped Chaldea for so long because Goredolf asked her what Kirschtaria was like as a person. In exchange, she had Goredolf tell her about Kirschtaria’s Clock Tower days. She learned he wasn’t a born champion, but a cautious and extremely stubborn coward. She laughs joyously to commend her Master for keeping up a perfect front for so long.[32]

Asked by Caenis what he wanted to do, Kirschtaria reveals how he went through multiple simulations of the Grand Orders created by the Alien God with each Crypter so they could be deemed worthy of resurrecting. Through these simulations, Kirschtaria bonded with his teammates, but once they were complete, only he would remember. He felt he had no choice but to act cold toward them because even if he told about the simulations, they wouldn’t understand, so he locked those experiences away to ensure they wouldn’t disappear. If it were possible, he would have wished he and his teammates saved the world together. Caenis realizes Kirschtaria loved his teammates as their friend and thinks he and Ritsuka are the same.[32]

She tells Krischtaria that he didn’t have to try so hard by himself. Kirschtaria tells her he was never by himself, asserting that all humans are trying their best. Caenis tries to refute him on that point, but Kirschtaria has already died. His death fills her with regret at failing to protect him, and she flies off to prove she was indeed the right Heroic Spirit for him.[32]

Possessing golden armor and trident as well as a god now in her own right, Caenis stops the Chaldeans from boarding the Storm Border and challenges them to a battle to the death to settle the score between them. Though they know the battle is meaningless and their magical energy is at its limit, the Chaldeans nonetheless accept her challenge. Caenis declares all she does now she does for her contracted Master, calling herself Caenis the Divine Spirit and the only Servant Kirschtaria truly trusted. She and the Chaldeans then fight.[33]

Defeated, Caenis remembers when Kirschtaria told her that his plan to deify humanity (after explaining it) would not include him, for it requires a central spellcaster to work. She thought it was utterly cruel for him to be the only relic of the past, but he was genuinely excited about his envisioned version of humanity. But, like the Dioscuri rightfully said, her hateful nature meant she could never wholly support Kirschtaria’s plan. She hated the idea and even told Kirschtaria that the idea of a deified humanity sounded like her own personal hell on Earth, yet to her amazement he got her to support him. Caenis accepts her defeat and disappear, content that she doesn't need to worry either the Chaldeans or Kirschtaria.[33]

Abilities

Back when Caenis was a member of the Argonauts, there was nothing special about her. Jason states that she wasn't stronger than anyone else.[14] However, having been favored by Poseidon to an unusually great extent, her Saint Graph was created with a drastically enhanced Spiritual rank. Since the vessel of a Heroic Spirit is incapable of containing her, Caenis manifests as a Divine Spirit.[1] Due to this, her Saint Graph is super high quality, making her a Top Servant.[15]

Kirschtaria Wodime claims that if Ophelia Phamrsolone dared offend her, Caenis would destroy her Lostbelt, king and all.[4] Ophelia doubts it, and although it is beyond her capabilities to keep a Divine Spirit such as Caenis in check,[34] she states that the power of her Lostbelt King is easily a match for a Divine Spirit's. On top of that, she also claims to have the strongest knight to ever live at her disposal, and she says that she can't imagine either of them having anything to fear, even from Caenis.[4] Jingle Abel Meuniere and Super Orion state that Dioscuri are Divine Spirit Servants even stronger than Caenis.[14] Caenis was also defeated in combat fair and square by Kirschtaria Wodime.[4]

Having the backup of Poseidon grants Caenis access to his Authority over the sea. This allows her to navigate it and cross any border, Lostbelt or not. It was his gift that let her move freely between Lostbelts.[16] Furthermore, because Poseidon was the same kind of ship god as Demeter, and he used to be as much a god of land as Gaia was, Caenis can use his Authority over the land too. This allows her to easily neutralize Demeter Klironomia making the Olympian Soldiers immortal, and subsequently kill them with one strike. However, when used against Demeter herself, she isn't capable of completely nullifying her regeneration, but just slow it down instead.[16]

Combat

Her armaments are a large-tipped Spear and a Shield. She can slam her shield into her opponent in a punching motion to damage them. Due to possessing the Authority of Poseidon, she's able to attack with torrents of water from her spear and simply by shouting.

Caenis is strong enough to block Napoleon's blasts with just one hand without feeling any pain.[8] Caenis states that she has had to take a lot of "weak" Noble Phantasms to the face in the past, but that Sherlock Holmes' Elementary, My Dear is by far the most irritating. Mash Kyrielight and him are able to hold their own against her until she leaves. Holmes states that he was only able to handle Caenis's spear thanks to his experience against Demonic Swords.[10]

Super Orion and Mandricardo are fast enough to react and block a surprise attack from Caenis.[14] Despite being exhausted after the fight with Aphrodite, Caenis was able to react to the Dioscuri twins, who move at near-light speedWP.[22] Senji Muramasa was able to sneak behind Caenis and touch her spear without her noticing.[23]

Caenis is a really good runner. Macarios states that her ultra-high speed would even give Hermes a run for his money.[18]

Atlantic Lostbelt

During the events of the Atlantic Lostbelt, Prometheus-Hephaestus modified Caenis' Saint Graph so that it could better synchronize with Poseidon's Authority, raising her Spiritual rank in the process. With Caenis' unparalleled spear and Mash Kyrielight's invincible shield, Miyamoto Musashi states that the three of them should be able to take both Dioscuri down simultaneously. Being pushed back, Castor resorts to moving faster than lightWP to catch Ritsuka Fujimaru. After he breaks free, Macarios and Adele finish them off with a special Spell.[24] Caenis was later shown to be capable of defeating Ashiya Douman's clone body. Limbo is shocked he couldn't defend against her "pitiful" techniques, only to then realize that Caenis is not only protected by Poseidon, but she also wields her own lightning and gold. Limbo says she was hiding her true strength.[30] Caenis was unnable to react to Chaos's beams moving faster than light.[29]

LancerCaenisStage4

After Kirschtaria Wodime dies, Caenis unlocks her final Ascension. In this form, her Saint Graph pattern doesn't match the one in Chaldea's records at all. While Caenis did have some Divinity mixed in previously, Goredolf Musik states that in this form every pore in her Saint Graph emanates a divine aura, almost like a pure Divine Spirit. Sherlock Holmes says that she has quite clearly become a god in her own right. He says that it would be no exaggeration to call her a direct proxy of Poseidon himself. She is defeated by Holmes and Mash Kyrielight.[33]

Skills

Class Skills

  • Mad Enhancement (EX Rank): Caenis, who is the Hero of Tyranny, possesses a special Madness Enhancement on the occasion of this materialization. They normally have reason, but if their anger accumulates and completely goes beyond the limits of their tolerance, they will completely become a storm of spears to the point that trying to come to a mutual understanding with them is absolutely impossible. It is not something at all where they might kill even their Master, but rather they will have the tendency to try to proactively kill their Master in order to end their own materialization.[1][2]

Personal Skills

  • Monstrous Strength (B+ Rank): A Skill that temporarily amplifies one’s strength. It is primarily an offensive special characteristic possessed only by monsters and Mystical Beasts. It increases one’s Strength Parameter by one Rank upon usage. The duration for this increase depends on the Rank of “Monstrous Strength”.[2]
  • Spear of Pillaging (B Rank): A Skill that demonstrates the way an usurper ought to be and how obsessed they are in pillaging/usurping with force.[2]
  • Favor of the Sea God (A Rank): The absolute defense brought with immortality. Conceptual defense. It would originally be a constantly active-type Noble Phantasm, but in this work it's manifested as a skill. Thanks to this boost granted by the Sea God, she feels powerful enough to go around calling herself a Divine Spirit.[1] Neptune Blessing turned a Skill.

Noble Phantasms

Caenis' first Noble Phantasms is Neptune Blessing. A conceptual defense that makes it impossible to so much as scratch Caenis at the sea, or rather, on the Greek god's own ocean.[10] Caenis' unbeatable defense makes her immortal, and not even the combined efforts of Super Orion, Mandricardo, Mash Kyrielight, Mochizuki Chiyome, and Jason are able to match her.[14] As she progresses through her Ascensions, this Noble Phantasm embodying the Sea God's protection/blessing becomes increasingly pronounced, and Caenis attains a form that leans closer to her self from her living days. In other words, it is the form of the brilliant and unparalleled existence clad in magnificent armor reminiscent of the great Sea God Poseidon's figure────the form of the "Immortal Warrior".[1] Holding one of Poseidon Spiritual Cores is enough to nullify the effects of this Noble Phantasm, and it allowed Orion to defeat Caenis without further aid.[14]

Caenis second Noble Phantasm is Lapithai Caeneus. An Anti-Army Noble Phantasm that sublimates her own existence itself as a Noble Phantasm. Performing a transformation into the "bird with golden wings" that they transformed into upon death, and dealing damage to the enemy army by assaulting them while soaring.[1] Although it was able to shake Demeter's massive core, it wasn't enough to bring her down, only to make her lurch.[16]

Caenis' final Noble Phantasm is Poseidon Maelstrom. A powerful attack that pulverizes the target with a massive ocean current. As a restricted reproduction of just a small portion of the sea god Poseidon's Authority over the Ocean, its original area of effect is believed to reach the gigantic scale of an Anti-Country Noble Phantasm, if not even higher.[1] Caenis used it to blow away over twenty autonomous weapons and Olympian Soldiers using flight Spells. Caenis was shocked she actually succeeded destroying all of them, and she states she believed it was going to take at least two or three shots.[26]

Forms and Alternate versions

Swimsuit

By changing into a swimsuit, Caenis has acquired a Rider Saint Graph. He has been hired in the position of a temporary security officer by Goredolf Musik. While he will earnestly fulfil his duties as a temporary security officer for Chaldea in the summer, he still intends to enjoy himself in his own way in the meantime. It’s not uncommon for Lancer Spirit Origins to approach the beachside alone, but the Spirit Origin of this time has taken up a surfboard and entered the sea while saying “I’m headed off for a bit!”[35]

Abilities

Class Skills:

  • Riding (EX Rank): Caenis’ mount is a water Dragon――― A legendary great sea snake (Sea Serpent), which is a subspecies of the Dragon species. While it may be a subspecies, he can ride members of the Dragon species freely, so his Riding skill has received this nonstandard rank.[35]

Personal Skills:

  • Beach Crisis (Poseidon) (EX Rank): A Summer Spirit Origin Skill not dissimilar to Beach Flower or Beach Crisis. People who are attracted to the shape of the young maiden’s perfected and beautiful body will suffer the Curses of the Sea God. “Why do you have this skill, even though your exposure is no different from usual!?” Fergus said as he was cursed.[35]
  • Kaiou-ryuu (B Rank): An original combat style jointly developed with Yagyuu Tajima-no-Kami. It specializes in waterside combat. Caenis says, “This sort of thing is all fun and games.” It isn’t something made by hard work, nor is it something that will remain in later times. Let’s try it a little, let’s try it, let’s try out this practical joke. One summer’s dream.[35]
  • Summertime Combat (B+ Rank): A skill embodying the knowledge gained from his time as a temporary security officer for Chaldea in the summer. Enhanced combat performance. Particularly, additional bonuses will be added when fighting on the waterside.[35]

Noble Phantasm:
Caenis' Noble Phantasm is Sea Serpent Storm Blue.

Development

Creation and Conception

Caenis was designed by Azusa in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Hikaru Sakurai in Fate/Grand Order.[6]
