BluebeardWP (青髭WP, Aohige?), Class Name Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), is the Caster-class Servant of Makiri Zolgen in the System Grail War in the Inner World of Paper Moon in Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Identity
As with all Masters and Servants participating in the System Grail War, Bluebeard is an Alter Ego of Gilles de Rais devised by Rani XII. Rather than being the historical figure, he is the fictional character from the 17th Century French story BluebeardWP written by the poet Charles Perrault, for which Gilles was the inspiration. He is nothing but a monster who has killed many wives.[2][1]
In the fairy tale, Bluebeard is a wealthy man who has remarried many times because his wives keep going missing. While Bluebeard is away from his home, he entrusts his wife with a key but makes her promise not to open a room in the basement. His wife cannot hide her curiosity and opens the door only to find the corpses of Bluebeard's many ex-wives inside. She tries to hide that she saw, but the key is enchanted and once he returns home Bluebeard knows that she opened the forbidden room. Enraged, Bluebeard attempts to kill his wife but is in turn killed by his wife's brother, a dragoon.[1][2]
Appearance
He initially looks just like Saber Gilles, but gradually takes on a unique appearance.
Personality
Unlike Gilles de Rais who is obsessed with Jeanne d'Arc, Bluebeard has never even heard of her before.[2] He is a crazed mass-murderer who simply enjoys killing.
Role
Fate/Grand Order
Ordeal Call I: Paper Moon
Abilities
Bluebeard is an Alter Ego made out of the aspects of Gilles de Rais associated with Bluebeard. Due to this, his Saint Graph is extremely similar to the original Heroic Spirit. Furthermore, while the name "Bluebeard" is really famous, not many people are familiar with his backstory instead.[2] On the other hand, Sion Eltnam Sokaris notes that Bluebeard is likely weaker than the original Gilles de Rais.[8]
Combat
Despite being dressed like a knight and carrying a sword, Bluebeard doesn't fight like his Saber counterpart. He is much better at commanding his Familiars, so Kama is able to deduce that his true class is actually Caster. Nevertheless, Bluebeard is able to match Duryodhana in close quarters combat while his Chthonians targeted the Rani Rs. After absorbing the Raniment of one of them, he was able to fight Kama as well.[3]
Skills
- Golden Rule (B Rank)
- Coercion (威圧, Iatsu?)
- Rage (激昂, Gekkō?)
- Excess Raniment (過剰ラニメント?)
- Raniment Predation (ラニメント捕食, Ranimento Hoshoku?)
- "If it's open, I have no choice but to do this..." (「開けたのであれば、こうするしかない……」?)
- "Oh, my wife, my wife!" (「おお、我が嫁よ、我が嫁よ!」?)
Noble Phantasm
Bluebeard's Noble Phantasm is Forbidden Red Room. It is the magical key that opens a room filled with terrifying creatures called Chthonians.[2] However, while they look similar to the tentacle monsters that Caster Gilles de Rais summons with Prelati's Spellbook, they are actually different.[1]
These Familiars can not only fight, but forcefully extract Raniment from other AIs by devouring them as well.[3][4] Due to this, Bluebeard has a potentially nigh-unlimited amount of resources, which grants him an overwhelming Magical Energy advantage over most Servants in the System Grail War. Makiri Zolgen claims that not even two Servants working together should be a threat to him. This was demonstrated when he battled Kama, Duryodhana, and Sion Eltnam Sokaris simultaneously. While Sion was able to predict the moves of every single familiar summoned, there were just too many of them to keep up. Paired with their superior Magical Energy supply, the two servants had no hope of matching him. Ayus considered using a Command Spell to temporarily boost her raniment, however, she didn't because she feared that it might still not have been enough to win. Nevertheless, once Gao Changgong showed up, to aid them, Bluebeard's Master ordered him to withdraw.[5]
After overwhelming Medusa, Bluebeard fought Kama and Duryodhana for the second time. On this ocassion, the two Servants were able to overwhelm him thanks to their greater efficiency at managing their resources. While Bluebeard had more Raniment stored up, he had spent most of it on his previous fight against Medusa.[2]
Forms and Alternate Versions
Super Large Chthonian
The Super Large Chthonian (超巨大蠢魔, Chō Kyōdai Shunma?, lit. "superlarge wriggling demon") is an artificial modification of Bluebeard's Forbidden Red Room Noble Phantasm created by combining it with Makiri Zolgen's structural support program.[2][6] It fuses all the Chthonian Familiars with Bluebeard's own body, creating a single large fiend.[2]
Personality
The monster rampages out of control, and completely ignores Defend's neutrality rule.[6]
Abilities
The Super Large Chthonian is considered Bluebeard's trump card during the System Grail War. Furthermore, as the monster is fused with him, Kama is unable to drag him down into depravity.[2] On the other hand, a strike from Duryodhana's club has no effect on it due to its large size.[6] After Makiri Zolgen used his Crest Worms to bind his own body to Bluebeard and his Noble Phantasm, the monster became far more agile than before.[7]
- Skills
- Regeneration (再生力?) Under normal circumstances, Medusa should be able to kill Bluebeard with her Noble Phantasm Chrysaor. She would use it to slice the Super Large Chthonian into ribbons, turn all the pieces into stone with her Mystic Eyes, and then hope for one of the pieces being the core where Bluebeard's main body was located in. However, Bluebeard's ability to regenerate while moving his true body around inside the monster every time Medusa attacks proved to be a direct countermeasure to her strategy.[6]
- Noble Phantasm
Bluebeard's Forbidden Red Room is full of secrets, like the corpses of all his wives. Whenever one of them entered the room and saw the corpses of his past wives, they would get killed and become a new corpse themselves. As this cycle was supposed to continue without limits, the Noble Phantasm includes the concepts of infinity and repetition at its root. Due to this, the Super Large Chthonian can create outer layers of flesh without limit. This ability proved to be extremely useful when Sakura granted Medusa all her remaining Raniment to expand the range of the latter's Mystic Eyes. While this allowed Medusa to bypass the monster's standard regeneration, Bluebeard was able to avoid getting petrified by simply creating new layers of flesh to hide himself in.[6]
The only way to defeat the Super Large Chthonian is to annihilate him all at once. However, even Medusa empowered by one Command Spell, Kama, and Duryodhana all working together lack the firepower necessary to do so. Even if Ayus used her Commad Spell, Duryodhana's Jai Kaurava would only be able to expand its range, not focus its power on a single point. In the end, it was Lainur Gusion's Raniment Fireworks what managed to take down the monster permanently.[7]
