Verner Caesarmund (ヴェルナー・シザームンド, Verunā Shizāmundo?, Verner Sisimund) is a magus of the Clock Tower studying under the El-Melloi Classroom. As part of the El-Melloi Classroom, he is one of the many Masters of True Rider in the True and False Holy Grail Wars of Fate/strange Fake.
Profile
Background
Member of the Caesarmund family, Verner is related to Orlocke Caesarmund from the Adra Castle incident and the current heir of the Papilio Magia. Studying under Lord El-Melloi II's tutelage, he is one of the students who were promoted to the ranks of "Brand" or "Pride"[2] and achieved fame within the Clock Tower.[3]
Appearance
Personality
Because of the nature of his magecraft, which is based on uncertainty, even his words become vague and hard to understand, making him sound roundabout when he speaks.[4]
Role
Fate/strange Fake
When Rohngall and his disciple discuss the students of El-Melloi II, they mention Verner among others.[2]
Verner is later among the representatives of the El-Melloi Classroom traveling to Snowfield after the death of Flat Escardos and the emergence of Thia Escardos. He is one of the masters of Hippolyta, being the one who summoned her, before spreading one of the Command Spells with his spell Papilio Magia to the rest of the El-Melloi classroom (except for Yvette, who was excluded due to her mentality and potential for betrayal should she have found it funny). As Verner is making the Command Spell invade the Magic Circuits of other people, the feedback he would receive from a betrayal would kill him.[1]
Abilities
Verner holds the rank of Brand, and was the second-youngest to have ever reached the rank. Only Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald reached it at a younger age than him.[1] He is the current heir of Papilio Magia: Butterfly Magecraft (蝶魔術, Chō Majutsu?),[2] which manipulates the uncertain moment between change (like a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly), allowing one to change something into something else.[5] Each of his movements is optimized to manipulate Papilio Magia: since each flap of a butterfly's wings blurs the world, by contrastingly attaching importance to formal structure, he can set himself as the anchor point of that world. However, because of the nature of Papilio Magia, sometimes the exact rank of his own magecraft gets undefined, even to him.[4]
He was the one who spread one of the Command Spells with his Papilio Magia to the rest of the El-Melloi classroom (excluding Yvette). As Verner is making the Command Spell invade the Magic Circuits of other people, the feedback he would receive from a betrayal would kill him.[1] While one of the Command Spells is shared among the entire class, Verner holds the other two completely.[1]
He can also use Papilio Magia to sustain the reception of his Peligor Corp-brand cell phone even in areas where he shouldn't get a signal. Once the butterflies disappear, the phone loses its signal.[1] With the incantation Perform a dance, Anywhere and nowhere, he is able to create a Bounded Field of butterflies which disperses a gale of wind from Gugalanna's stamp moving at 50m/s into a gentle breeze.[5] He was also able to use butterflies to cause the whole area around Thia Escardos to become undefined and blur distances between people for him.[4]
