Background

Gilgamesh, not having known of the source of Utnapishtim's immortality, rejected it. The sage, described as having "perhaps become faint of heart" by Gilgamesh, told Gilgamesh, “I know that you will not submit to the gods. I will not tell you to beg mercy from the Anunnaki. Instead — I will tell you a secret.” He told Gilgamesh about the Herb of Immortality in the abyss of the underworld, that which could grant immortality without being beholden to the gods.[3]
