Thomas DoughtyWP (トマス・ドウティ?) was a contemporary and close friend of Francis Drake.[1]
Profile
Background
Thomas Doughty was a noble living in the 1500s. He was close friends with Francis Drake, being the one to introduce Drake to Queen ElizabethWP. Unbeknownst to her fleet, including her close friend Doughty, Drake was planning a circumnavigation of the worldWP, gathering funds from investors under the guise of promising to attain great wealth from plundering Spanish treasure shipsWP. They set out from PlymouthWP and docked in San JuliánWP in June 1578. As of this time, Doughty was in command of the Swan under Francis Drake's fleet. Drake revealed the real purpose of the voyage, but the loss of ships before even arriving in San Julián and the revelation of the monumental task of circumnavigation left the fleet in low spirits.[1]
Doughty, wishing to have Drake stop the plan for her own sake, betrayed her and deserted the fleet with crew of the Swan. Though he hoped that the betrayal would stop her, he knew it would ultimately fail to even slow her progress. Deciding to hold hope in the idea that a unified crew could successfully complete the circumnavigation, he decided to be captured as a traitor for the purpose of unifying the crew after being sentenced to punishment by Drake.[1]
Personality
Doughty is enamored with Drake, appreciating her charm and potential as a sailor. Though the one to introduce Drake to Elisabeth, he credits that meeting as fate. While believing her to have the potential and supporting her dream of circumnavigation, he lacks faith in her ability to complete it under the initial circumstances, leading to his betrayal and decision to act as a sacrifice.[1]
Role
Fate/Grand Order
During the Human Order Incineration Incident, Francis Drake brings Ritsuka Fujimaru into a minor singularity taking place at the time of Doughty's betrayal for the purpose of teaching them a life lesson, using her relationship with Doughty as an example. With the help of Nikola Tesla and Edward Teach, she plans on capturing the Swan by using her knowledge of Doughty's escape route. She plans on having Doughty explain his actions to Ritsuka and letting him go afterwards.[1]
Upon encountering the Swan, they defeat and capture Doughty, who pleads for his life. He reveals the real purpose of his betrayal, stating that he wants to live only to allow Drake to complete her journey. After letting him go free, they explain the situation to Drake, who already had some idea of Doughty's true purpose, but explains she would have continued the same course of action regardless if she knew the truth. She explains to Ritsuka that the purpose of the voyage was to show Ritsuka that things will not always go as planned.[1]
