SigmundWP (シグムント, Shigumunto?) is a figure from Norse mythology, detailed in the Völsunga saga.
Profile
Background
Sigmund was the King of FrakklandWP,[1] known for the episode in which he pulled Gram, "the sword of supremacy in the tree",[2] from trunk of a mighty treeWP within the halls of King Völsung[2][3] during Odin's trial.[1] This legend followed the "sword of selection" model that began with the sword Merodach,[2] and Sigmund's act itself was the model for Caliburn, the sword in the stone, possessed by King Arthur.[3][4]
Sigmund had a son, Sigurd, with his second wife HjördísWP,[5] daughter of King EylimiWP.[1] Sigmund died in battle while Sigurd was a baby[6], never having seen his son's face.[7] Gram was destroyed after being shattered by the divine spear Gungnir.[8] Hjördís remarried after Sigmund's death, and Sigurd was taken in by Regin, known to be a friend of their family.[6] Gram was later reforged by Sigurd using its remains.[3] Sigurd later defeated King HundingWP's army and avenged his father.[1]

Development
Creation and Conception
Sigmund is designed by Shirow Miwa. Miwa had previously worked for Type-Moon as the illustrator for Sigurd and Brynhildr in Fate/Grand Order, but he had also secretly designed other Norse characters including Sigmund as fan art on his own time, not as something Type-Moon asked him to do.[9] He eventually submitted the designs for approval after seeing how Columbus Lily had also started as fan art,[10] which led to the development of Fate:Lost Einherjar and the designs being canonized.[11]

A sword that appears in the “Völsunga Saga” of Norse mythology. It is wielded by the hero Sigurd. The incident where Sigurd’s father Sigmund pulled Gram from the trunk of a tree later became the model for Caliburn, the sword in the stone. After Sigurd reforged Gram from the shattered pieces, it is said to have become a demonic sword capable even of killing a dragon.グラム
