The High Priest Makuzu (摩玖主大僧正?) is the Master of Caster in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Background
Makuzu was originally part of the simulation inside Logos React Generic depicting Sengoku Era Japan. History was distorted though by the Holy Grail, which Makuzu obtained early. This allowed him to ignore the simulation's original goal of unifying the country. He then used the Grail to summon Maxwell's Demon.[1]
Desiring to bring salvation to the masses, he founded the Faith of Max, a religious group that worships Maxwell's Noble Phantasm. His group gained influence over the temples and shrines. Those who live under them are provided with everything they need, so no one has to work. The group was forced to take up arms in self-defense against Demon King Nobunaga's indiscriminate attacks against their people and territories.[2]
The Faith of Max eventually took Honnoji temple at its own. Underneath the temple, they constructed a reactor to house Maxwell's Noble Phantasm. To power the device, they kidnapped children from the region once a month to extract their mana. Makuzu planned to use the infinite mana of Maxwell's Noble Phantasm to rewrite reality to bring salvation to the masses. However, the simulation couldn't supplement the Noble Phantasm's infinite scope, and it became a Singularity that began to encroach into reality.[1]

Needing Demon King to be removed as a threat, Makuzu orders Maxwell to establish an alliance with the Chaldea Clan against her.[3] Maxwell reports his success while they're assaulting Azuchi.[4] After Demon King is defeated, Makuzu sends Maxwell to give the Chaldea Clan his congratulations. He also tasked him with proposing a peace conference between their groups, which will take place at the Faith's temple at Honnoji.[2]
Makuzu welcomes Ritsuka's party when they come to the temple for the peace conference. He reassures his intentions with making peace between their groups. He confesses he tried to make peace with Demon King, but she ignored his pleas and targeted his followers. Nagao Kagetora asks him why he intends to unify the country, to which he reveals his Great Lord Max will provide salvation to the masses. He declares their power will Sukhavati in this era through their prayers alone. Kagetora criticizes this method as well as the monks who were drinking and eating meat. Makuzu responds that self-control is of consequence when they're provided with everything by Lord Max. He pities Kagetora for believing in Bishamonten and other insignificant Gods, and asks if she'll switch to Max's doctrine. This only infuriates Kagetora though, demanding to know what Lord Max is. Makuzu apologizes, and declares the Faith only wishes to provide visible aid to the masses. Everyone's movements are then restricted by a sudden burst of energy claimed to be from Lord Max. Makuzu orders Maxwell to punish the group, to which the latter sends warrior monks. The group fight but more monks keep coming. Makuzu berates them for resisting, claiming the mana from Lord Max is infinite. Believing the group to fearful enough of their god, he orders Maxwell to capture them to be converted into warrior monks. He dismisses Kagetora's declaration that their army will come for them, saying none are threat now that the true Sukhavati is already materializing.[2]
Makuzu later catches Maxwell freeing the group. He defends using children to provide the mana reactor with mana by saying they're only sacrificed once a month. He counters the group's criticism of his actions as being unjust by saying a few sacrifices are needed to bring about salvation. Sakamoto Ryoma partially agrees, but he understands the number of sacrifices will keep increasing. Makuzu again defends his actions that more mana is necessary to provide paradise. He then uses the reactor to create Black Giants, declaring they can be created infinitely.[1]
The group escape the temple only to be met with more Black Giants. Makuzu appears and summons a unique Black Giant he declares is the Great Lord Max. Maxwell reveals it is his Noble Phantasm having reach its true form as literal demon, warning it can rewrite anything with its infinite mana. With aid of her Noble Phantasm, Kagetora and the others fight the demon. Makuzu tries to use the Grail to heal Max when Nobunaga Oda arrives.[1] Soon after arriving she sets the temple mountain on fire. Makuzu uses the Grail to heal Max; Maxwell reveals he's been supplying Nobunaga with mana to make her into a fusion of her otherselves. With Nobunaga's help, the group seemingly defeat Max. However, it is still active due to the Grail acting as its core. Fortunately Okita Souji arrives and destroys its core with Lightless, Three-Stage Thrust. Makuzu is left in utter disbelief that Lord Max was destroy, as the Singularity has no gods nor Buddha. Nobunaga though points out the possibilities that exist within humans like Ritsuka can be considered gods. Makuzu is shocked since she is supposed to be the enemy of all living things, who destroy gods and Buddha. He wonders if she acts that way to protect humans. After the group retrieve the Grail, he is deleted as an error.[5]
