Genma Tobori (斗彫 源馬, Tobori Genma?) is character appearing in The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II.
Profile
Background
Born as Genma Yakou (夜劫 源馬, Yakō Genma?), he is the son of Akane Yakou and the older brother of Yukinobu Yakou. Genma was supposed to be the heir to the Yakou family. However Yukinobu was the greatest genius that the family had seen in centuries; at six years old he had even been able to walk in the air, the sign of a Xian. With his extreme talent Yukinobu was pushed above Genma in the Yakou succession. Genma was ordered by their mother Akane to be his brother's support, but Yukinobu vowed to be both the heir and the Black Chest in order to let his brother live the life he wanted.[1]
Genma was adopted into the Tobori to make kagura masks for the Yakou to use in rites to call on their god for magecraft. Genma promised to make the perfect mask for his brother, a promise he fulfilled later in life.[1]
At one point the Yakous arranged a marriage between Genma and his young niece Akira, but Yukinobu was able to stop it.[1]
Personality
Genma cares deeply for his young nieces Akira and Mei. When they were younger they used to come to visit him at his home, and he made a swing for them. Genma tells Lord El-Melloi II that making sure Akira is safe is all the payment he needs for the mask he gives Ergo.[1]
Appearance
Genma wears a piece of a mask as an eyepatch over his left eye. There is no skin underneath because when he was younger he tried on a flesh-taking mask just for fun.[1]
Role
The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II
The Devil of the Wandering Sea
Genma gives Ergo a mask which can invite the gods within him and ask them to leave. However Genma warns Ergo that once he wears the mask it will be his new face, so he should only put it on once he's sure of what face he wants to have.[1]
Abilities
Genma can see the Divine Spirits inside Ergo, referring to it as Ergo having four faces. However he can only see Ergo's own face and the monkey's, with the other two looking away from him.[1]
The masks Genma makes are used for the Yakous' magecraft, for rites to call upon the kami.[1]
