Arcueid Brunestud is the White Princess of the True Ancestors. The title of Brunestud was given to those True Ancestors capable of manifesting the Millennium Castle Brunestud, and has been likened to be the vampire royal family, although this is not strictly true. The True Ancestors were a race of beings copied from Type Moon, the ultimate being of the moon, also known as the Crimson Moon. Long ago the will of the planet had no defense mechanism against humanity, nothing to keep them in check. Thus the Crimson Moon came down and offered to help the planet make a race of ultimate beings to rule over humanity, thus resulting in them being the "consciousness of the planet".[5][6]
She is a True Ancestor who, around the year 1200, spawned naturally, as True Ancestors always do. It was soon discovered that her specs were far above the True Ancestor standard. It was decided impromptu that she was to be educated for anti-corrupted True Ancestor purposes. She woke up only to kill corrupted True Ancestors, and went to sleep after defeating her target.[1][7]
As the executioner, she did not have any vampiric impulses, and the rest of the True Ancestors also believed she had none. Somewhere along the cycle of her killing Demon Lord duties, she was tricked by the magusRoa into drinking human blood, causing her to go haywire. After killing all the True Ancestors who raised her, she regained her sanity and locked herself in the Millennium Castle. After that, she formed a new cycle where every time Roa reincarnated, she would visit the world outside the castle, punish him, and return to sleep.[1][8]
Appearance
She has the appearance of a female teenager around 16-17. Her real age is about 800-900.[1] Arcueid has short, golden blonde hair and piercing crimson red eyes, wearing plain clothing (often a white turtleneck sweater, a blue skirt, black tights, and brown knee-high boots). At the time of the French Incident and when Roa first met her, Arcueid had much longer hair.
Arcueid is seemingly capable of changing the form of her clothes at will, as seen in the Ciel Route True End when her clothing rapidly change until she gains her Red Arcueid outfit.[9]
Not the best person to have as an ally and the absolute worst to have as an enemy.[1] This princess is a killer machine who never experienced anything other than fighting and doesn't care for "useless" matters. Or rather, was.[1] That said, the total time she's been active is less than an year. She's a genuine bloodsucker who came to Souya City in pursuit of the vampire Roa. An invigorating heroine with looks and a personality unbecoming of a vampire, who gets killed by the protagonist in her introduction scene. She gets interested in Shiki's murder skills and asks him for his help.[1] She has no desire to threaten human society, instead hunting other vampires known as Dead Apostles.[10]
After suffering through a traumatic experience, a naively innocent side of her was somehow released. She now lives as a free-spirited, almost childish princess.[10] She's Chaotic Good. Introverted (extroverted when it comes to Shiki), cheerful, and active. Since her appearance is stuck in an late teens form, her mental age is also not matured. Not caring about details is in her personality. She got happy-go-lucky ever since Shiki killed her, but she still has her vast knowledge and dry humor (her logical nature as a True Ancestor), resulting in an unbalanced personality, carefree yet intellectual.[1]
After being broken as a True Ancestor beyond repair, she grew greatly interested in Shiki, and this interest eventually developed into affection, which was taken to extreme level of loving Shiki's life, so she wants to protect not only Shiki himself, but also everything Shiki approves. Except when she is rampaging or awakened. In Ciel's route, the awakened Arc's directive was to first obtain Shiki, and only then respect his life. And to obtain Shiki, she chose the frightening method of eliminating all obstacles.[1][9]
Arcueid does everything in her power not to drink Shiki's blood, which nearly occurs several times in game as he is practically the only human at night with her, and she has problems controlling her vampiric impulses (吸血衝動, Kyūketsu Shōdō?) after being drastically weakened by Shiki's attack. She doesn't want to drink blood, as she doesn't want to become a monster that feeds on humans in order to survive.[11][7]

In her own route Moon Princess, Arcueid acts as the heroine. After leaving school early because of an anemia attack, Shiki Tohno spots Arcueid on the street and is consumed by an irresistible urge to kill her because of his Nanaya blood. The Nanaya were a family of killers that specialized in hunting down non-humans, and Arcueid as a vampire awoke his Nanaya blood. Skillfully trailing Arcueid back to her apartment, he rings the doorbell and in the instant the door opens, sneaks through the crack and slices her into 17 pieces in an instantaneous assault with his knife and his Mystic Eyes Of Death Perception.
In Ciel's route Midnight Rainbow, Arcueid acts as one of the main antagonists, along with Noel.

While pursuing her greatest enemy, she arrives in Souya, where Shiki lives. Although a fateful encounter awaits her and Shiki, a story of an earlier possibility is about to unfold.[10]
Abilities
Arcueid is the Cerebral Corpus of the Planet (星の頭脳体, Hoshi no Zunō-tai?, localized as "Brain of the Planet"), its Archetype, possessing a frame on the level of an Alter Ego of PlanetEarth. Due to this, Arcueid stands at the highest echelon of power in all of TYPE-MOON,[12] and is the strongest being in the setting of Tsukihime and Mahoutsukai no Yoru.[13] As Archetype: Earth, Arcueid is a candidate for the position of Ultimate One, the strongest being of a Celestial Body, however until she has settled things with Altrouge Brunestud a being 'that forms the celestial' on the same scale, she cannot be referred to as the 'ONE'.[14]
World Backup
Arcueid distorting the space around her through sheer magical energy density.
1/1
Arcueid receives backup from the planet as part of the Counter Force. She has the ability to increase her output and lifescale (existential scale/power) to one level above those she faces while drawing upon it, and it is said to be virtually unlimited. The planet provides Arcueid with just enough power to annihilate her opponents.[9] As she receives Backup from the planet, it can be said that the limits of her actions are the limits of nature itself.[5][6] She can use the same ability as Enkidu's Transfigurationskill when the latter has the planet as their Master; to gain A-rank in all parameters along with extra power she may allocate freely to boost herself further, becoming A+ Rank in all parameters if she distributes it evenly or even higher if she focuses on one or two of them.[15] Even among the True Ancestors, Arcueid is special as there is no limit to the strength, magical energy or capability she can increase with the planet's Backup, she is able to do this as as one of the True Ancestor Royalty bearing the name "Brunestud" and her position as the Avatar of the planet.[9] Many Fallen True Ancestors and Dead Apostles have met their end facing her due to these qualities, as she grows perpetually stronger and her source of magical energy is inexhaustable.[9] She is able to synchronize with any leylines because the entire planet is considered her territory. However, the connection is so strong that the weakening of the land is capable of influencing her as well.[14]
In the case that the limiter known as the physical body is compromised, Arcueid's vessel is reconstructed and molded into her ideal form while the planet funnels life force and power back to her.[9] During the process the limit on the power Arcueid can draw from the planet is undone allowing her to draw as much she wants until the process is finished, which increases her lifescale. Additonally Arcueid recontructs the Texture around her to fit her needs. This is done by activating Event Storage to turn the area blank and then molding it with Marble Phantasm, into her preferred environment. During the regeneration phase, Arcueid might seem defenseless and stationary however in actuality her defenses during the transformation are impervious, carelessly attacking her would only skyrocket her lifescale even further, making the battle unwinnable.[9]
During the process Arcueid scans her entire domain, and she becomes completely aware of every living being and their power, she accounts for their weapons and their capabilities. She senses all hostility and malice which allows her to intercept nearly any attacks once she finishes her resurrection and closes the direct connection to the planet. During her battle against Fullpower Ciel, Arcueid measured both Ciel and the Seventh Holy Scripture: Execution, and tuned her vessel to a level above the combined strength of Ciel and the Seventh Scripture: Exeuction together. Additionally after finishing the construction of her vessel she can still utilize backup to increase her strength in response to her opponent in case she misjudges their capabilities or fails to account for hidden trump cards. This allowed her to overcome the Seventh Scripture's ballista form before Ciel could fire a second shot.[9] After defending against Ciel's all out assault from the Seventh Scriptures Gun, Sword and Pile Bunker form as well as her Numerology Magecraft, Arcueid's strength increased to the point where she could overwhelm Ciel with just a single swipe of her claws. The magical energy around her became so dense it started to distort space and warp gravity, allowing Arcueid to easily deflect projectiles such as Blaze's bullets or Ciel's 2 million volts of lightning blast from Numerology magecraft.[9]
She is hard to kill during the day, and she is almost invulnerable at night, her power reaching its peak during the full moon. During the night, she technically "has no death", so all of her lines of death and points of death disappear. It is possible to see them if she is weakened, and removing her connection with the planet by killing part of the world around her allows for Shiki to view them clearly even at night.
Combat
Elemental royalty are known as the True Ancestors. As their Princess, she may not have any special abilities, but she boasts high specs in every aspect. Simple is best. Unlike Dead Apostles who were once Human, True Ancestors are endowed with their predetermined abilities from birth, and are unable to improve them through the sucking of blood. Even amongst unworldly True Ancestors, her abilities are top class. A mediocre vampire has no chance of defeating her. However, being a True Ancestor is synonymous with being unable to restrain their craving for blood. She uses her immense power, 70% of it, to seal her own Vampiric Impulses.[14][1]As the most powerful True Ancestor ever, she possesses super speed, strength, durability and resistance to attacks she has experienced before, higher power during the night, and her most potent weapon, her Marble Phantasm. She is incredibly powerful and very capable in close combat, and despite being a vampire, she is able to survive in direct sunlight.[10]
After being born she was instilled with combat knowledge and rigorously trained until she became a perfect weapon.[14] Arcueid can freely turn her hands into claws for combat like others vampires, allowing her to easily shred opponents.[16] Even when weakened she was able to overwhelm Vlov Arkhangel in close combat, despite his incredible swordplay. The moment she countered his flames she was able to inflict multiple fatal wounds with her claws.[17] After recovering most of her strength, Arcueid easily overpowered Ciel in her normal state, destroying all the Black Keys thrown at her and shattering Ciel's Tower Ring: Tower of ImprisonmentBounded Field which is even able to temporarily restrain a Dead Apostle Ancestor, in a single blow.[6]
She fights with ruthless efficiency, quickly dispatching her opponents with her claws and overcoming their special abilities with her Marble Phantasm. She even uses tactics such as baiting her opponents into committing to an all out attack before she lands a brutal counterattack. However due to her miscalculation she did not realize the true nature of Vlov's Principle until it was too late and was struck down by him as result, taking her out of the fight temporarily.[17] After being "killed" and changed by Shiki Tohno Arcueid has started fighting in a more "human" manner. Even when surrounded by thirty Executors wielding powerful Conceptual Weapons specialized against True Ancestors, Arcueid was able crush them delicatly one by one by using invisible pressure to stop their hearts and knock them unconcious.[18] During her brief fight against Roa near his coffin, Arcueid was able to effortlessly overwhelm him with her chains, ensaring and restraining him before she pierced his chest and ripped out his heart to prevent him from regenerating.[19]
Due to being an Elemental, Arcueid possesses several special abilities:
Regression to the Age of Gods: Arcueid in her Archetype: Earth form possesses her own type of Magic Circuits known as Regression to the Age of Gods. This ability represents the extent at which Arcueid is capable of reproducing Mysteries that existed on Earth before Magic.[3]
Quality (Rank B): Quality represents "how distant from what Humans are capable of" their pure Mysteries are.[3]
Quantity (Rank A++): Quantity represents power. The higher the quantity, the greater the degree of influence over the surrounding environment.[3]
Composition (Before Common Era, pseudo-deified natural phenomenon): Composition represents the era of the "Mystery". In terms of magecraft, it would be equivalent to which Magecraft System they use.[3]
Mystic Eyes of Enchantment: Arcueid's Mystic Eyes enchant the souls of those who the user looks at and of those who looks at the user, granting her the ability to plant suggestions and paralyze people in place.[16][20]
Regeneration: Arcueid can regenerate her wounds rapidly, but her time during Tsukihime leaves her unable to do so while trying to hold back her bloodlust. Arcueid can create another body, even if the previous one has been completely destroyed, as it can be considered a form of resurrection.[16] Normally, Arcueid can heal her entire body even if she was cut into 17 pieces, however, the wounds caused by Shiki Tohno's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception stop her healing abilities so she is forced to remake her missing body parts from scratch at the cost of 80% of her power. Prior to their next fight with Vlov, Arcueid states to Shiki that if they wait three days, she can regain enough of her power to take Vlov Arkhangel down.[17]
Body Resistance: Arcueid gets antibodies and resistance against attacks she has experienced before. This includes any type of magecraft. Due to this, Runes and Kabbalah don't work on her. The only attacks she has yet to experience are ancient Shinto magecraft in Japan and the treasures in South AmericaWP. However even those wouldn't be as effective as Shiki Tohno's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception during daytime, as she was unable to build any antibodies against it. The wounds caused by his Mystic Eyes made her question what kind of Conceptual Weapon Shiki had used against her. Additionally Arcueid is able to withstand incredible levels of heat, up to 3000 celsius without utilizing her Marble Phantasm.
Breath of the Planet (Rank C): A fundamental ability of the A-Ray (Known as A-Reis in a Lostbelt) True Species. Though it seems as if she's simply taking a deep breath to psych herself up, she's actually absorbing mana from her surroundings. The generation of internal magical energy and performance increase is comparable to a Dragon Core.[14]

Arcueid's Marble Phantasm is an ability possessed by the Nature Spirits that are the planet's sense of touch, allowing them to reconstruct the world through probability alteration. By connecting their will to the world, they can transfigure it into whatever environment they imagine. However, the same cannot be done with things like humans or animals, which exist independently of the world. Imagination realization is purely the ability to freely transform one's surroundings.[21] Anything that spawns from nature falls under the scope of this unique psychic power and can be created. Marble Phantasm is essentially an all-powerful printer that can reproduce any natural occurring flora, minerals and geographical features. Human-made items such as chemical compounds or architecture do not fall under this jurisdiction. However, with the greedy notion that 'all items originally came from nature anyway', such things become possible. In such a scenario, the scale and accuracy drops significantly.[14] Furthermore she cannot directly interfere with individuals that have become independent from the world like humans or animals. Humans have weakened by distancing themselves from nature, but at same time, will not perish even if nature itself does—obtaining absolute freedom. At the of the day, Marble Phantasm can only freely exert change unto the environment and the situation.[22]
Arcueid seems to prefer to conjure vines and chains for combat, which she uses to restrain her targets and defend against their magecraft or curses.[19][17] Tapping into her full power causes flowers, vines and other vegetation to sprout whenever Arcueid takes a step. At the True End of the Midnight RainbowRoute, when Arcueid has recovered most of her strength, the effect is strong enough to cover an entire city block in creepers in a matter of seconds.[9] Arcueid is able to create special vines that represent nature's infinite cycle of rebirth which will constantly regrow and bind her target after being burned and destroyed. Even Vlov's blue flames are unable to destroy them. She also uses the vines to wrap around rocks to build constructions such as a makeshift bridge or to throw the massive bedrock at her enemies.[17] She is also able to reinforce them so they become as hard as bedrock.[9] Her Arc Drive, Melty Blood (メルティブラッド, Meruti Buraddo?), has Arcueid bind her foe with vines then ferociously slash them to pieces with her claws.
During her battle against Vlov, Arcueid created a special dress of ice called Clad in Glacier. It was created as a countermeasure against Vlov's flames and is so cold that any regular human that touches it are frozen solid instantly. Due to the sheer cold it's able to douse all of Vlov's flames instantly.[19][23] Arcueid states that if she knew about Vlov's true Principle she would have made a dress with heating abilities instead.[23]
For long range attacks, Arcueid prefers to utilizes the atmosphere to attack. Simply by directing her malice at someone causes the atmosphere to create invisible claws of compressed mana that slash apart her target from any direction. Due to being natural phenomena, they are invisible and nearly impossible to antecipate.[9] Arcueid is able to ulitize an attack called the Breath of the Planet which utilizes the Earth's rotational energy as an attack. Arcueid gathers a slight portion of that power and redirects it at her target by bringing down her claws. [9] She is also able to utilize a lesser more controlled version of that attack in a localized area which she used to flatten a building.[23] She can also temporarily transform her frame into a condensation of Magical Energy, to deliver an immensly powerful strike with the energy provided by the planet. [14]
Event Storage
Arcueid using Marble Phantasm on Roa.
1/1
An application of Marble Phantasm, the ability to freely rewrite the surface of the earth.[9] It's the ability to conceptually and physically store things that have been cultivated on the surface of Earth. The confiscation of all creations birthed on the surface of the planet—its Textures. An ability on par with the Divine Spirits’ so-called ‘Authority’, though given that it’s a function possessed by the planet, it is less of a skill, and more of a system.[24]
During her fight with Roa, Arcueid utilized this to store everything in the corridor and change the shape to become an ethereal crystallized form of itself. This disables Roa's Thaumaturgical Foundations and removed all the Mana around them, sealing him in a confined space that is visualized as a cube that appears before Arcueid, then proceeds to swipe her claws over it, causing Roa's body from the ankes up to be disintegrated .[20] This is portrayed through her Last Arc Marble Phantasm - Event Storage (空想具現化・事象収納, Māburufantazumu・Jishō Shūnō?).
During her battle against Ciel, Arcueid intiated Event Storage to reconstruct her vessel and her environment into her ideal form. Due to not being weakened, the Event Storage formed a gravitational sphere that started the Event Conversion and Storage. All living beings down to microorganisms and everything man-made in Souya city are crushed and consumed from the fourth to second dimensions. After that leveling of spacetime they are then stored in the Inner Sea of the Planet where they can never be retrieved unless Arcueid herself releases them. From an outside point of view it looks like all the buildings and people are pressed into thin sheets of paper before they disappear into the sphere. The entire city is turned into a metaphysical object after she stores their essence and content, leaving only an outline, empty rock formations similar to the buildings left. By increasing its power Arcueid is even able to store away those "buildings" and all the Textures of the Planet.[9]
Arcueid is able to compress them to that degree due to her Principle of Focality, which Roa notes to be so powerful that his barrier which can withstand an Ancestor's Principle is only able to temporarily withstand it, comparing it to paper in the face of her Principle.[9]
During Event Storage, Arcueid is able to will the Millennium Castle into existence as her ideal environment.[21][9]
Other Capabilities
Whenever Arcueid faces down an enemy with the full intention of annihilating them, the atmosphere around her physically becomes more oppressive. Various people have described themselves as suffering actual physical pain merely from being the target of Arcueid's killing intent.
Arcueid was capable of tending to Shiki's wounds by using the remains of Vlov to patch him up.[17]
Arcueid was able to trap Shiki in a dream world.[25]
Forms and Alternate Versions
Red Arcueid
Red Arcueid (暴走アルクェイド, Bōsō Arukweido?, Berserk Arcueid)
Appearance
She gains a complete appearance of how Classic Arcueid looks, only with an open gap on the right side of her skirt, which causes it to resemble her EXTRA counterpart's outfit.
Due to the effects of coming back from a "certain incident" (in Type Lumina, this incident was Shiki killing her - much like he did when they first met in the original Tsukihime series), her vampiric impulses and overwhelming desires have taken over. Controlled by pure emotion, her words and actions are quite dangerous, but her underlying personality remains mostly unchanged. The only big difference is her increased selfishness and changed attitude toward humans.[26]
Luminary
Luminary (光体, Kōtai?) is a body state Arcueid that appears in the Extra End of the Ciel Route, Midnight Rainbow.[27]
Appearance
Luminary Arcueid's appearance varies on the situation and how far away the observer is. When she’s first emerging, she’s super scary and something to the effect of a demonic terror. After she’s stabilized, to someone who is distantly removed from the Luminary—300 meters or more outside her zone of influence—she only looks like light, while if they’re within the 300 meters of her zone of influence, she has a human shape. There might be eye-shaped holes, similar to cavities, where her mouth, eyes, etc, are supposed to be. When even closer to the Luminary—30 meters within Arc’s zone of influence—then the light being emitted looks more subdued, with her eyes, mouth and lips shining with the brilliance of life. She looks even more beautiful than normal Arcueid, due to a perception manipulation effect that the Luminary has against intelligent beings. Those who look on from afar will get the impression of something terrifyingly unknowable, while those who have arrived close will get the impression of something beautifully unknowable. Those who are far away are enemies who are to be killed without being shown the truth, while those who are close by are allies who are to be given a glimpse of the truth—a truly spiritually divine mechanism, in the religious sense.[4]
The Luminary's surface was indeed hot, but it did not have enough heat to burn the skin, in addition, it had a definite texture. It existed as proper matter. When seen as a landmark from afar it did not seem to be a lifeform, but the impression when touching it directly with one's fingertips was different. The feeling was that of "tough rock" but also "flowing water". Though the Luminary's skin was certainly tough, it was not the toughness of rock, but rather something smooth and pleasant. As though a beautiful porcelain of sorts.[9]
Abilities
Class Skills
Luminary (A Rank): Rapid expansion (急膨張, Kyū Bōchō?) of the Spiritual Core.[4][27] It is what in astronomyWP is called Inflation, it’s what the exponential expansion of the universe that occurred after the Big Bang is called.[4] An excited state only possessed by True Ancestor royalty. When a True Ancestor's body is completely destroyed by some means, this reaction is said to occur.
When she is active, her output is "always limited to one degree above the opponent", but that is not an expression of her omnipotence but rather a limiter on her. In the case that the limiter known as the physical body is destroyed, and her mental activity is not weakened, suppression over her power is undone. When that happens, her magical energy scatters into a massive frame and the limit of the amount power she can draw disappears.[9] It's the result of Arcueid, a "small yet massive being", losing the container called 'body' and consequently having the compressed magical energy released, causing her Life Scale to expand (though this is actually a false impression). Arcueid's consciousness exists at the core of the light, but since the barrier called a 'body' doesn't exist, it is a state where in this excess of magical energy "an image of herself as she imagines it" is projected and diffused. Ciel describes this as what a True Ancestor looks like without a body; a Luminous Body made of pure Ether.[28][4][27][9]
The Mage's Association calls this a Spiritron Frame (Lightframe). In other words, this is a natural phenomenon created out of nothing but mental power.[4] It is capable of changing from a phenomenon into a lifeform, but Ciel states that this change, if it's completed, will mean the world's done for.[28] If one carelessly destroys a True Ancestor who still has magical energy in surplus, the energy stored within their body manifests—a retribution mechanism—to become a calamity that destroys human cities.[4] While originally staying in the planet's interior, the "soul" meant for prolonged management of the planet leaks onto the surface, a system failure that should never happen.[9]Michael Roa Valdamjong describes the Luminary as a 'system' for the World to reset the environment, one not to be used for one's own feelings. Once it started to walk, it is no longer the world's will, but just a single lifeform.[9] If a Brunestud still brimming with magical energy is imperfectly destroyed, it will reemerge through just this energy that had been stored within its body and destroy human settlements in the form of a calamity, as a revenge mechanism.[27][9] Arcueid does not cause Inflation when Roa still has part of her power and she’s about to die from maceration, but with her having killed Roa in Ciel Route, her love toward Shiki causes her to bug out—unable to keep suppressing her vampiric urges, she brings about this phenomenon.[4][27][9] Luminary Arcueid is about 200 meters when she’s emerging, and about 100 when she’s stabilized her dispersed consciousness and is in her normal state.[4]
Mystic Eyes (Hyper Wide-Range): All intelligent beings who Luminary Arcueid looks at will have their minds paralyzed, either out of fear, or out of worship. Unless those seen by Luminary Arcueid have unusually powerful mental strength, both escaping and fighting is infeasible.[4] Her Luminous Body's Mystic Eyes are in a different league from a Dead Apostle. Even if someone does not meet her gaze, in simply by being "seen" by the Princess, their whole body will freeze up and be captivated.[9]
Fantasy Dequantification (Nullification of Normal Attacks): Because of being in a mental form, only attacks which Arcueid recognizes as ‘oh, this one will suck’ are capable of wounding her. In addition, being in an energy form means all injuries she receives are instantly restored to normal.[4]
Geothermal Manipulation & Atmospheric Manipulation: To change the surrounding environment into a harsh one. The ground going into high-temperatures alone is enough to impede the activity of life, with all that approaches at the mercy of the atmospheric turbulence, as though a leaf in the wind—in short, she’s a personification of natural disasters. An existence which is earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, and the likes, all put together. Princess Arcueid from Melty used all these consciously and intentionally, while Luminary Arcueid can only ever use them unconsciously and reactionarily. They are only activating automatically as biological functions, and cannot be controlled. Princess Arcueid is actually the one who is the superior of the two, given that she can properly use these disasters as weapons, and is able to keep damage to a minimum. The Luminary is not a form meant for attacking, but for regeneration. It is nothing more than a necessary procedure for recreating the body of the True Ancestor so they will once again be able to act out their role as one. Therefore, it’s unable to move from the spot where it manifested, no matter what (as there is no need to). It’s sort of like the cores and surface-level synchrotron radiation quantity of stars. The convergence of hydrogen and helium through strong gravity leads to planets being pressed together into masses of resources, eventually forming a benign crust after they cool down, while a Luminary is meant to turn into a body after its convergence. The benefit to having a body goes without saying: the establishment of an ego—a self. Remaining a Luminary means that eventually the consciousness would eventually merge with the Earth itself and then disperse as mere energy.[4]
However, in Ciel's Route, as Arcueid couldn’t control her reason and emotions, she also couldn’t cancel her Luminary transformation. The only thing awaiting her at the end of that would be to perish from dispersal.[4]
In addition, once she started walking out of jealousy, she gave up on being a chrysalis. Though the Luminary is ultimately a system meant for returning her to normal, once it is employed as an individual lifeform, even Arcueid will start falling apart at the seams, and eventually completely perish.[4]
On the other hand… if one was to use the Luminary as a means of birthing a new, stronger individual instead of a means of returning it to normal, then this would not apply. It would be able to act as a new True Ancestor, while the Arcueid of before would then quite literally disappear.[4]
Personal Skills
Marble Phantasm (D Rank): Though Arcueid normally has this at A, here it has been ranked down to D. True Ancestors in a Luminary state can only use Marble Phantasm in an approximate manner. As such, she cannot construct any detailed fantasies.[4]
The gravitational sphere caused by Arcueid's Event Storage.
Event Storage (EX Rank): The ability to conceptually and physically store things that have been cultivated on the surface of Earth. The confiscation of all creations birthed on the surface of the planet—its Textures. An ability on par with the Divine Spirits’ so-called ‘Authority’, though given that it’s a function possessed by the planet, it is less of a skill, and more of a system. The gravitational sphere that appears under Arcueid’s feet when she has turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.[4] An ability of the True Ancestors, the planet's sense of touch. The conceptual and physical storage of things reared on the planet's surface. Every creature that has appeared on the face of the planet——it is something that requisitions textures.[24][9] The gravitational sphere had a never before observed amount of magical energy density. As the heat of the absorbed events are being condensed until the extremum. This is possible due to Arcueid's Principle of Focality. All the information in the region was compressed to the 10 to the power of minus 35 meters extremum. The celestial egg will cause absolutely no irregularities as long as it is within the Inner Sea of the Planet, the conceptual dimension. However, when it appears materially, the vast amounts of energy are not possible for the extremum to contain, and it rapidly expands.[9] Due to the Event Storage, the city is becoming an uncertain world upon Arcueid entering her Luminary state. Approaching Arcueid, the world's center and furthest depths, is difficult. It seems the world itself is showing discretion, and distancing itself away from her. Roa likens it to a conveyor belt.[9]
Mana Burst (Star) (A Rank): The super version of Mana Burst—the Breath of the Planet. What animals know as ‘breathing’. She inhales magical energy (Mana) from the atmosphere and then exhales it into the outer World as new magical energy after circulating it through her body—a Mana Cleaner. This is the reason why the Earth gets filled with high-density mana when the Luminary appears, causing Humans to die. The gravitational field that appears under Arcueid’s feet when she’s turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.[4]
Takashi Takeuchi designed Arcueid after idea of an un-vampire-like vampire. He also states that she is "not the best person to have as an ally and the absolute worst to have as an enemy". Her long skirt form at the second half of Ciel’s route was meant as little surprise. It goes to show how much he can’t let go of his habits.[1]

Comment from the illustrator: True Ancestor, a vampire born as one. One of the main heroines in A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, and the poster girl for Tsukihime as a whole. A character designed after idea of an un-vampire-like vampire. Not the best person to have as an ally and the absolute worst to have as an enemy. Her long skirt form at the second half of Ciel’s route was meant as little surprise. It goes to show how much I can’t let go of my habits.
Explanation: A True Ancestor who, around the year 1200, spawned naturally, as True Ancestors always do. It was soon discovered that her specs were a far above the True Ancestor standard. It was decided impromptu that she was to be educated for anti-corrupted True Ancestor purposes. She woke up only to kill corrupted True Ancestors, and went to sleep after defeating her target. Somewhere along this cycle, she was tricked by the mage Roa into drinking human blood, causing her to go haywire. After killing all the True Ancestors who raised her, she regained her sanity and locked herself in the Millenium Castle. After that, she formed a new cycle where every time Roa reincarnated, she would visit the world outside the castle, punish him, and return to sleep. This princess is a killer machine who never experienced anything other than fighting and doesn't care for "useless" matters. Or rather, was.
The main heroine of the story. She has the appearance of a woman around 16-17. Her real age is about 800-900. That said, the total time she's been active is less than an year. She's a genuine bloodsucker who came to Souya town in pursuit of the vampire Roa. An invigorating heroine with looks and a personality unbecoming of a vampire, who gets killed by the protagonist in her introduction scene. She gets interested in Shiki's murder skills and asks him for his help. She's Chaotic Good. Introverted (extroverted when it comes to Shiki), cheerful, and active. Since her appearance is stuck in an late teens form, her mental age is also not matured. Not caring about details is in her personality. She got happy-go-lucky ever since Shiki killed her, but she still has her vast knowledge and dry humor (her logical nature as a True Ancestor), resulting in an unbalanced personality, carefree yet intellectual.
And to obtain Shiki, she chose the frightening method of eliminating all obstacles.

COMMENT from STAFF
Regression to the Age of Gods/Composition: Phylogenetic Tree up to the 18th century
Nasu's comment: A still living, genuine phantasmal species. His origin itself was long long ago, but it wasn't until the 18th century that he fell as a droplet on the werewolf village. A two thousand year class vintage monster. He is the natural enemy of the magi of the Common Era. In a contest of pure magical energy, attacks may still work on him, but when it comes to magecraft, it'll be absolutely invalidated. He's a life-form that's sort of like a relative to Arcueid, so he has an aura similar to Arc. It is a bit boorish to mention it but he doesn't have the concept of gender. Although it is very unlikely, in the case that he found a partner, he would be able to freely choose his own gender to compliment theirs. It's just like the manga "They Were Eleven!"
Koyama's comment: As a werewolf, I drew various forms of him. Between the complete wolf form and bipedal form, Beo can transform on the spot into the most fitting form for the action that he wants to do. Just as humans don't put any conscious thought into moving each induvial finger when they eat food with chopsticks, if he wants to run he does it on 4 feet and if he wants to grab something he does it with his "hands". Conversely he's also able to consciously control them. Normal werewolves can't take the form of a full wolf and their transformation is slow. In Beo's opinion that's so half baked it's meaningless, and it's so funny to look at that it spoils his mood. That's all I know. His clothes are supposedly to Touko's taste.
Q: What do the Quality/Quantity/Composition of Regression to the Age of Gods mean in Beowulf's profile? Do Ploys, Arcueid, and Heroic Spirits have such designations? And what would their number be?
Q: What do the Quality/Quantity/Composition of Regression to the Age of Gods mean in Beowulf's profile? Do Ploys, Arcueid, and Heroic Spirits have such designations? And what would their number be?
A: Regression to the Age of Gods represents the extend at which they are capable of reproducing the Mysteries that existed on Earth before True Magic. Consider it to be like that, their own style of Magical Circuits. Quality represents "how distant from what humans are capable of" their pure Mysteries are. Quantity represents power. The higher the quantity, the greater the degree of influence over the surrounding environment. Since Beowulf only has a quantity of C, he can only display his power to an individual, or over a village.
Composition represents the era of the "Mystery". In terms of magecraft, it would be like Rune, Kabbalah, Black Magic and such.
Ploys are not of Age of Gods, so they cannot be assigned a number in Regression to the Age of Gods.
For Arcueid... Princess Arcueid should qualify. "Quality: B Quantity: A++ Composition: Before Common Era, pseudo-deified natural phenomenon"
Class: Berserker True Name: Archetype:Earth Gender: Female Body Alignment: Lawful Chaotic Origin: Tsukihime Region: Earth Height/Weight: About 200 meters when emerging (depending on the CG)
About 100 meters when stabilized (as big or bigger than the tallest building in the city. Adapts to the level of nearby civilization)
※Its weight stays the same no matter the state—being the same as the normal Arcueid. Given that it’s just the lifeforce spilling out from Earth given shape, if pressed to give an answer, I’d say its weight would be the mass of Earth, or something. So, no matter the action it takes, as long as it’s on the surface of Earth, it’s not heavy, and so its weight doesn’t cause any damage to the terrain—meaning, when the Luminary walks, it doesn’t cause the ground to sink in or anything like that. However, this does not apply to man-made objects.
If normal Arcueid is: Strength: B Endurance: B Agility: B Magic: A Luck: B Noble Phantasm: EX
Then Luminary Arcueid is: Strength: E Endurance: EX Agility: B Magic: A++ Luck: EX Noble Phantasm: D
Personal Skills
■ Marble Phantasm: D
Though Arcueid normally has this at A, here it has been ranked down to D.
True Ancestors in a Luminary state can only use Marble Phantasm in an approximate manner.
Due to having turned into a Luminary, she cannot construct any detailed fantasies.
■ Event Storage: EX
The ability to conceptually and physically store things that have been cultivated on the surface of Earth.
The confiscation of all creations birthed on the surface of the planet—its Textures.
An ability on par with the Divine Spirits’ so-called ‘Authorities’, though given that it’s a function possessed by the planet, it is less of a skill, and more of a system.
The gravitational field that appears under Arcueid’s feet when she has turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.
■ Mana Discharge (Planetary): A
The super version of Mana Discharge—the Breath of the Planet.
The gravitational field that appears under Arc’s feet when she’s turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.
Class Skills (Passives)
■ Luminary: A
Rapid expansion (Inflation) of the Spiritron Core.
A phenomenon more simply called a ‘Luminary’.
(‘Inflation’ is originally terminology from astronomy—it’s what the exponential expansion of the universe that occured after the Big Bang is called) A state of excitation possessed by True Ancestors of the highest grade—their royalty. It’s said to occur as a side-effect when the True Ancestor has by some means had its body completely destroyed.
When Arcueid—a small yet heavy being—loses the body which forms her frame, the compressed magical energy within is released, and the result is that her Lifescale expands (though this is actually a false impression).
Though Arcueid’s consciousness is in the center of this light, as she no longer possesses a body to serve as a wall, she takes a state where her surplus magical energy levels remain, while the sort of self-image she imagines for herself is projected and dispersed. The Association calls this a Spiritron Frame (Lightframe). In other words, this is a natural phenomenon created out of nothing but mental power.
If one carelessly destroys a True Ancestor who still has magical energy in surplus, the energy stored within their body manifests—a retribution mechanism—to become a calamity that destroys human cities.
Arcueid does not cause Inflation when Roa still has part of her power and she’s about to die from maceration, but with her having killed Roa in Ciel Route, her love toward Shiki causes her to bug out—unable to keep suppressing her vampiric urges, she brings about this phenomenon. Correction: she unintentionally brings about this phenomenon.
Luminary Arcueid is about 200 meters when she’s emerging, and about 100 when she’s stabilized her dispersed consciousness and is in her normal state.
— Mystic Eyes (Hyper Wide-Range)
All intelligent beings who Luminary Arc looks at will have their minds paralyzed, either out of fear, or out of worship.
Unless those seen by Luminary Arc have unusually powerful mental strength, both escaping and fighting is infeasible.
— Fantasy Dequantification (Nullification of Normal Attacks)
Because of being in a mental form, only attacks which Arcueid recognizes as ‘oh, this one will suck’ are capable of wounding her.
In addition, being in an energy form means all injuries she receives are instantly restored to normal.
— Geothermal Manipulation & Atmospheric Manipulation
To change the surrounding environment into a harsh one.
Princess Arc from Melty used all these consciously and intentionally, while Luminary Arc can only ever use them unconsciously and reactionarily.
They are only activating automatically as biological functions, and cannot be controlled.
Princess Arc is actually the one who is the superior of the two, given that she can properly use these disasters as weapons, and is able to keep damages to a minimum.
Remaining a Luminary means that eventually the consciousness would eventually merge with the Earth itself and then disperse as mere energy.
→ However, in Ciel Route, as Arc couldn’t control her reason/emotions, she also couldn’t cancel her Luminary. The only thing awaiting her at the end of that would be to perish from dispersal.
→ In addition, once she started walking out of jealousy, she gave up on being a chrysalis. Though the Luminary is ultimately a system meant for returning her to normal, once it is employed as an individual lifeform, even Arcueid will start falling apart at the seams, and eventually completely perish.
→ On the other hand… if one was to use the Luminary as a means of birthing a new, stronger individual instead of as a means of returning it to normal, then this would not apply. It would be able to act as a new True Ancestor, while the Arcueid of before would then quite literally disappear.
Lore — Concerning the suppression of Arcueid's power.
The True Ancestors are the Touch of Earth—something like its immune system.
True Ancestors of the highest grade like Arcueid are one step above that of an immune system—something which would no doubt be appropriate to label as the Alter-Ego of Earth.
(In fact, the True Ancestors were only ever birthed to create a frame on the level of an Alter-Ego of Earth. All True Ancestors outside of Arc were failures. Yet in the True Ancestors’ last days, they succeeded in creating the Brain of the Planet that had been desired in the first place).
However, that such a lifeform would conduct itself in a human body could in itself actually be said to be something abnormal.
If you pack the energy of a celestial object into a tiny human body, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it would suddenly go out of control.
As long as Arcueid remains active, her output is limited to always be one step above her opponent, but this is not a representation of her sheer power.
This is to protect the body in its function as an output device, and to prevent wasting energy (for the earth).
However, in the case that the limiter of the body is taken away from her, and Arcueid’s mental activity is unabated, the suppression of her power is undone.
The magical energy hidden within her body disperses almost in an explosion, and the limit on her ability to draw energy from the Earth is removed.
This is Inflation—the Inflationary Luminary Phenomenon.
Though normally bound to the planet's interior, being a ‘soul’ (the chances of a celestial object being born in space is practically none. Force of Fate and Spacetime Causality which lets this be established is defined as a soul) meant for prolonged utilization (administration) of its celestial object, once it leaks onto the surface, it causes a system critical error.
That said, True Ancestors almost never enter this state.
The usual True Ancestor’s mind is worn down by having to suppress themselves, so when their body is destroyed, they do not have the mental strength (as it is abated) to recover
Luminaries have manifested in battles with ‘fallen True Ancestors’—those who have succumbed to their own vampiric urges—but in those cases the Luminaries did not emerge on as large a scale as Arcueid did.
“If thou wisheth to exterminate a True Ancestor, thou shalt first wear down its mind”
This is a teaching passed down among the Church. Just as this precept suggests, Executors do not assassinate True Ancestors from the shadows, but instead defeat them in prolonged all-out wars from head-on—or alternatively—push them into self-termination from a lack of magical energy (because if you kill them via a sneak attack, there’s a high chance they’ll turn into a Luminary).
— Concerning the actions of Luminary Arc
Her gigantic size alone makes her powerful, but her actions are not all that showy.
The same goes for when she caught Ciel:
She slowly reaches out for the astonished Ciel. Ciel, feeling she is in a pinch, tries to move back, but her body is heavy.
Though Ciel would normally be capable of easily dodging Arc’s hand, she only barely manages. She pushes her body to try to keep going and create some distance, but it doesn’t obey.
Ciel then notices that just being inside of Arc’s zone of influence causes a litany of debuffs such as… The thinning of the air, the heating of the ground, and what’s more, gravity being kind of weird.
However, even having noticed this, it’s far too late. Arc enjoys watching Ciel pathetically squirm as she tries to escape. At this point, Ciel is practically done for—sewn into space from being looked at by Arc.
Ciel can do nothing but watch with despair on her face as Arcueid slowly lowers her hand onto her. Once caught, the spectacle of her dismemberment inside of Arc’s hand begins.
— The dangers brought on by the three zones of influence
Arc has three layers of consciousness in her Luminary model.
3: AMAZING—Extended Consciousness that goes beyond the Surface Consciousness into the outer world.
(AMAZING—with the meaning of ‘awe’—the fascination of the unknown born from amazement and wonder)
It starts from 300 meters outside the Luminary and extends for several kilometers.
Air turbulence originating from the inside of the Surface Consciousness (2) is let loose (spills out) onto the Extended Consciousness, almost like sharp blades.
The turmoil of the harsh winds, magnetic fields and more, mean that the closer one gets to Arcueid, the more dangerous it becomes. It is impossible for a human to enter the zone of influence of her Surface Consciousness (2) unless they’re in a tank.
Though this is already a dangerous state, physically speaking, the more one distances oneself from the Luminary, the less the danger becomes.
Luminary Arc is completely unaware of the lifeforms inside this Extended Consciousness.
Humans who challenge it are like Don Quixote, voluntarily challenging a dragon—voluntarily going off to die.
Here, the Luminary can be seen as a dome of light—or alternatively, as some kind of symbol.
2: AUDIENCE—Surface Consciousness that extends radially for 300 meters diagonally with the Luminary at its center.
(AUDIENCE—not with the meaning of ‘spectators’ or ‘onlookers’, but that of ‘being granted audience’)
Within the 300 meters of the Surface Consciousness, afforestation proceeds far more dramatically.
The Luminary goes from looking like ‘some light thing’ to a human-shaped titan.
The vegetation that covers the ground’s surface are the same primordial plants as known to mankind, but their size and resilience make them almost completely different—basically, they’re huge, almost 10 to 20 times larger than usual.
These clearly display just how tough the vegetation of the Earth was in the past.
No matter how weak and adapted to the current environment of life that nature of modernity may be, it doesn’t change how frightening this primeval (paleozoic) vegetation once was (before the Mesozoic and the Jurassic periods when the dinosaurs lived, there weren’t any plants that could bear flowers, so be careful to not add that).
It gives off the intimidating impression that primeval nature was far more powerful than human civilization is.
Within this zone of influence, the ground is covered in primeval vegetation, making travel by foot almost entirely impossible (though this does not apply to people who are superhuman).
The difference in atmospheric pressure between the ground and the sky (temperature gradients caused by the oxygen consumption of the gigantic vegetation) perturbs the airflow, creating a corridor of harsh wind from the intersection of up- and downdrafts.
Obstructed by the plants, it becomes impossible to move on land, while the air turbulence in the sky makes it impossible to fly particularly well.
And yet, under these kinds of conditions, the automatic counter-attacks performed by the standard rampaging Arc are carried out as well.
This is because once an enemy has entered the Surface Consciousness, they are obviously recognized as such—as an enemy.
If they then by some stroke of bad luck enter Arc’s view, they will be restrained by her Mystic Eyes, at which point they’re doomed.
The automatic counter-attacks become like invisible claws, either cutting the enemy into pieces, or blowing them up into the air like a leaf, toying with them until they die.
Thinking that it's impossible to survive in the sky, one stops on the ground, only to find there is no oxygen left (the gigantic vegetation is sucking all of it up).
As should be evident from all this, the Surface Consciousness is not an environment in which the current mankind could exist.
Luminary Arc takes not a single action, settling the matter simply by recognizing those who enter as her enemy—almost as if they were fruit flies, flying toward their own death.
1: SKINRAIL—Deep Unconsciousness that exists close (within 30 meters) to herself
(SKIN—with the meaning of the skin also being a railing, even if it’s close enough of a distance to touch with others)
In this zone of influence, the visual impairments coming from the turbulent airflow, the distortions of the Luminary’s energy, and so on, disappear, and the Luminary can be seen for real.
Unlike the revolving airflow hell that was the Surface Consciousness, here the atmosphere is stable, with the environment suited for life.
Once something enters this zone of influence, Luminary Arc will—though hesitantly—counter-attack.
Just by pointing her gaze towards them, she can invoke heat waves and gales that blow them away with an impact that’s almost like a hammer.
Luminary Arc herself almost never does things like punch or stomp though.
If they then stop moving after running out of energy, she’ll probably leave them be…
But if they happen to be an enemy she has an interest in, she’ll probably use her Atmospheric Manipulation to bring them up (into the air) before her eyes.
She went to the effort of stretching out her arms so ostentatiously in trying to terrify Ciel because—yes—Ciel was special.
As for Shiki, she stubbornly refused to ever touch him on her own, due to him having touched her—this pretend indifference is thought to have been a snide way for her to get back at him.
And now for some FAQs about the Luminary.
— Can you touch it?
Once it enters a stable state, the Luminary materializes—so yes, it has hit detection.
It feels both like hard stone and flowing water to the touch.
Also, Arc can will parts of it to rarefy, and when she does that, she can pass those through buildings and what-not.
— Since it's light, does that mean it’s hot?
It’s a bit hot, but not enough to get burned.
— How much reason is left in Luminary Arc?
Enough. She doesn’t feel like saying very much, but that doesn’t mean her reason is lost. It’s more that her True Ancestor supernaturality has gotten stronger.
She does talk, but not with her voice, instead sending orders directly to the other party’s brain (telepathy), meaning that her lips don’t move when she speaks.
— What does she look like to humans?
Depends on the situation and how far away they are.
First, when she’s emerging: it’s totally fine if she’s super scary here. I think something to the effect of the demonic terror found in the storyboard is fine.
Then, when she’s stabilized—around the time when she’s caught Ciel and is playing around with her:
When someone is distantly removed from the Luminary—300 meters or more outside her zone of influence—she only looks like light, while if they’re within the 300 meters of her zone of influence, she has a human shape. I think it'd be fine if one could see that there are eye-shaped holes (kind of like cavities) where her mouth, eyes, etc, are supposed to be.
When even closer to the Luminary—30 meters within Arc’s zone of influence—then the light being emitted looks more subdued, with her eyes and mouth (lips) shining with the brilliance of life. In fact, make her look even more beautiful than normal Arcueid.
This is like a perception manipulation effect that the Luminary has against intelligent beings.
Those who look on from afar will get the impression of something terrifyingly unknowable.
While those who have arrived close will get the impression of something beautifully unknowable.
Those who are far away are enemies who are to be killed without being shown the truth.
While those who are close by are allies who are to be given a glimpse of the truth—a truly spiritually divine (religiously speaking) mechanism.
One of the races of so-called nature spirits, fairies independently established by the planet as its sense of touch. A completely different species from the originally human Dead Apostles, no religion's purification ritual works on them, nor does sunlight faze them — they are beings infinitely close to immortality.
As they receive backup from the planet, it can be said that the limits of their actions are the limits of nature itself. If the planet is thought of as a single organism they are like its white blood cells, regarding the humans who consume nature as an element that must be exterminated.
In the same way that humans perceive the vampires who prey on them as "evil", from the standpoint of the True Ancestors it is the humans who enjoy the blessing of nature all the while plundering its resources that are "evil".
A royal member of the vampire race known as the True Ancestors. After suffering through a traumatic event, a naively innocent side of her was somehow released. She now lives as a free-spirited, almost childish, princess. She is incredibly powerful and, despite being a vampire, is able to survive in direct sunlight. She has no desire to threaten human society, instead hunting other vampires known as Dead Apostles. While pursuing her greatest enemy, she arrives in Souya, where Shiki lives. Although a fateful encounter awaits her and Shiki here, a story of an earlier possibility is about to unfold.
As a matter of fact, Ciel's Route is special! And that is because we find it indispensable to showcase via images what would happen if you were to make an enemy of the strongest echelon in TYPE-MOON's denki fiction.
Worldbuilding
In our latest work TsukiRE, the worldbuilding inherited from the previous version has been updated to be deeper and more modern.
There are a few things that are not going to be revealed yet, but I would like to introduce some things that were part of that update.
Setting
The city goes by the name of Souya.
In the old version, we used a provincial city as the setting, but now it’s been changed to an urban one. A fantastic place, neighboring a gigantic factory about four stations away, reminiscent of the Tokyo-Yokahama Industrial Area.
The protagonist’s highschool lies close to a residential area far from the station, so he does not hang out there on his way home from school. On the ends of this residential district lies a forest that has been there since ancient times, and by this forest’s entrance lies the mansion of the great landowner Tohno family.
Mystic Eyes of Death Perception
The peculiar ability possessed by the protagonist Shiki. Categorized as a psychic ability.
He can see the normally imperceivable ‘lines of death’, something akin to the point of collapse in all things.
These lines of death are like seams, which means all it takes to sever an object is to run a blade through them.
The strength and hardness of the object does not matter. No matter how hard or frail, the feeling is always the same. Perceivable = Cuttable.
In addition, as things dismembered by the lines of death ‘kills’ that specific part, no healing is possible. This is because the severed part has died on the existential level, even if it only looks like it has been cut.
Shiki is a living being and thus able to better understand the death of things that are alive just as he is—this is why he unconsciously perceives the lines of death of the living.
However, Shiki himself can stress his consciousness and overexert his eyeballs to visualize even the ordinarily incomprehensible lines of death on inanimate objects, through which he can perceive even the ‘death of space—death of existence’, as an ultimate locality. (Shiki’s brain is unable to withstand seeing the lines to this level)
In addition to the lines of death, there are the points of death, which stand above the lines.
If the lines of death are blood vessels, the points of death are hearts.
Those that have had their point of death pierced are killed in literally a single strike. Just as in the case with the ‘death of space’, Shiki has to overexert himself, or else he cannot see them.
An important point is that while the lines of death exist in all things, there are differences in how distinct they are.
Putting it simply: the lines of death are lifespan.
He can easily perceive the death of humans who only have the lifespan of about fifty to a hundred years, but it is difficult for him to perceive the death of existences who possess a lifespan in the hundreds or thousands of years.
Meaning, as long as he is trying to perceive the concept of death as a shape, he cannot quite so readily grasp it coming from things that are difficult to kill.
This is the reasoning behind why when Shiki is up against Greater Dead Apostles or Arcueid in the story, he has to push his consciousness to the limit if he wants to perceive their deaths.
(*Greater Dead Apostles are ‘hard to kill’, while Arcueid ‘cannot die’. Shiki’s murder of Arcueid in the beginning of the game made the impossible possible. In the Tsukihime world, things like Arcueid dying or Arcueid being killed were events outside of what was normal.)
Psychic Abilities
Special abilities endowed to the body from birth such as those possessed by Shiki, Kohaku and Hisui are known as psychic abilities.
They are impossible to gain after birth through either training or study.
Through successive inbreeding, it is possible to pass on these psychic abilities to some extent, even if it is not possible to perfectly reproduce the ability possessed by the parent.
Shiki, who comes from a clan known as Nanaya that have passed along a mutant gene, could be seen as an even further mutation.
(*The Nanayas’ special ability is not associated with ‘death’, but rather concerns ‘karma’. The reason this altered into ‘death’ with Shiki is because of his near-death experience)
Mixbloods
Those that have inherited the blood of ancient purebloods, like the Tohno and Saiki.
Pureblooded species are non-humans (oni-kind), or alternatively those that have strayed from being human and turned into onis.
As they have inherited the role of nature’s sense of touch (output devices), they have abilities different from those of psychic ones.
Psychic abilities are ultimately something which the human performs on their own, while the abilities gained through mixed blood is natural interference/natural contact—not something manifested by just one’s own personal abilities (one’s brain).
In addition, psychic abilities (generally) abide by physical laws, while the abilities of mixbloods often do not. Fantastic stories, folklore, tales of old—in order words, unnatural phenomena which cannot occur in reality.
Psychic abilities and mixbloods have a relationship similar to that of magecraft and magic.
Magecraft and Hexcraft
Technology used by Ciel and Roa. Known as magecraft—spatial interference and application methods based on rituals (systems).
Anyone can use it with enough training, but the potency depends on the individual’s own qualities (the number and quality of their Magic Circuits).
In the story of Tsukihime, runes, kabbalah, hexcraft, witchcraft, wonderworking, etc, are all bundled together as magecraft. Xian arts and esoteric buddhism are also included in this, but as they are part of a different faction, they are not brought up in Tsukihime.
It is basically all-purpose, but cannot make the impossible possible.
At the end of the day, magecraft is a technique for abbreviating the processes of methods possible to the individual themselves.
Even if there was magecraft that allowed one to go to the moon, it would still require preparation with costs on par with—or even exceeding—that of actually creating a rocket.
“Sure, it’s amazing being able to shoot fire from one’s hands—but nothing more than just amazing. If all you wanna do is shoot some fire, wouldn’t it be more efficient to just bring a blowtorch?”
This is the simplest explanation you can give regarding magecraft in TYPE-MOON lore.
You could say that magecraft is something which modern science can substitute for.
But you could also say that magecraft can substitute for science.
Seperate from this, that which can perform things impossible to realize through modern human technology is what is called Magic.
By the time of Tsukihime’s story, that which can be called Magic have decreased to five.
True Ancestors
Those treated as the ‘original bloodsuckers’ in the Tsukihime world.
They are the cause of the vampires who run rampant among the public, even if the True Ancestors themselves are a far cry from the common perception people have surrounding vampires.
They are few in number and exceedingly close to immortal.
Even if they are exposed to sunlight, it would only ever give them slight anemia, and they are not affected by the cleansing rites employed by any religions either.
True Ancestors are not individuals independent of the natural world like humans, but an older species still at one with nature.
That they’re often misunderstood as undying and eternally youthful is because they are the planet’s sense of touch. In the first place their time-scale is different from that of humans.
Their lifespan is naturally immense; its limits, so to speak, are only those of nature itself. True Ancestors and fairies are something akin to the planet’s white blood cells. So they possess abilities sufficient to exterminate any of the various factors which would do harm to the planet.
However, at the time of their birth, a singular error occurred within them.
Probably due to the influence of that after which they were modeled.
They turned out to possess the desire—the primordial, survival-oriented desire—to ingest the blood of intelligent lifeforms.
Moreover, because they were incarnated as protectors, their objectivity was diluted. They gained autonomy, as one of the many species living on the planet. Basically, they came in possession of a sense of values closer to that of a human’s.
As they have ceased to be free of self-interest—such as noncorporeal elementals ought to be—they have lost sight of their role as protectors, to the point that among them some have even become like humans, and gained independence from the natural world.
Those known as the True Ancestors have no limits.
As a result of being provided back-up from the planet, if the need should arise, they can strengthen their abilities until that need is met. (However, the amount and speed that each True Ancestor can increase it by differs per individual)
In addition, the power of their will is enough to take actual form, meaning that the thoughts of the True Ancestor becomes a weapon on its own, influencing even the world.
Fantasy Materialization—also known as Marble Phantasm—the reformulation of the world through probabilistic fluctuations.
However, they cannot directly interfere with individuals that have become independent from the world like humans or animals. Humans have weakened by distancing themselves from nature, but at same time, will not perish even if nature itself does—obtaining absolute freedom. At the of the day, Marble Phantasm can only freely exert change unto the environment and the situation.
As a slight digression, if the ridiculous situation of a castle appearing in the middle of a city at night was to occur, this is thought to be because the vampire (True Ancestor) suzerain of it willed it into creation.
The True Ancestors are a species which are practically gods, but they do have a flaw.
Though True Ancestors, they are still bloodsuckers. It is the very act of sucking blood itself which serves as their silver stake to the heart.
Though they are the cause that created the vampires (Dead Apostle) on Earth, they themselves have absolutely no need for drinking blood to continue living. The energy they need for that they can get through the ingestion of calories.
That said, they cannot go against their instinct as a species (to ingest and partake in the information of intelligent life = bloodsucking), which results in them sucking the blood of humans.
They execute humans in order to bring harmony to nature—though in actuality, they need them more than anything else in order to fulfill their own desires.
This contradiction causes the minds of these proud beings to collapse in on themselves. The more blood these proud elementals suck, the more they degenerate into beasts, craving pleasure the same as any human would.
This degeneration is rightly called ‘falling to evil’.
True Ancestors which have this happen to them forget the consciousness they have birthed for themselves and become a powerful vampire who begins corrupting the world.
As they do not have lifespans, ‘to lose sight of their values’ is the same as their ‘death of self’.
In order to prevent this death of consciousness, True Ancestors use a large part of their abilities to inhibit their vampiric urges.
The longer they withstand their desire to suck blood, the more it grows, yet they keep suppressing it—an unending battle of perseverance. By slamming the tremendous power of their will up against their own mind, they can control their desire to drink human blood.
Invariably, as they hold back on sucking blood more and more, the time eventually comes when they realize that they cannot suppress their vampiric urges any longer and so they enter into an eternal sleep by their own will. This is the activity threshold for those with an endless lifespan—one could perhaps say it is what humans would actually call their lifespan.
Dead Apostles
Something much like what the public at large imagines of a vampire.
Weak to sunlight, sucks human blood, transforms into beasts or mist and is immortal.
Called vampires in the game out of a consideration to make things easier to understand.
*However, the creature known as the vampire started being talked about in the 1900s. In real folklore, they are actually the monster with the least pedigree. In contrast, werewolves, who are often seen as their henchmen, are a monster passed down from days of old—in fact, parts of what the vampire was modeled after was taken from the characteristics of werewolves.
That’s why in the world of Tsukihime, they are more properly treated as bloodsuckers—the general term for things that suck blood from their own kind.
Dead Apostles are—just as one would imagine from their name—dead. They are divided into those that have been transformed into one by some kind of magecraft, and those that have had their blood sucked by a True Ancestor, and become its puppet.
Unlike True Ancestors, both of these kinds have to suck human blood in order to survive. Blood is considered a necessity for their vital activities.
They are also weak to sunlight, and as they are unable to completely rid themselves of the shared awareness of being human, they are defeated when faced with religious cleansing rites.
Event Storage
An ability of the True Ancestors, the planet's sense of touch. The conceptual and physical storage of things reared on the planet's surface. Every creature that has appeared on the face of the planet——it is something that requisitions textures.
In terms of Divine Spirits it's an ability on the level of an Authority, but since this an Authority of the planet it is a 'system' rather than a 'skill'. The gravitational sphere that appeared at Arcueid's feet when she had become an Astral Body was of a scale great enough to store the entire planet's texture.
Due to the effects of coming back from a "certain accident," her vampiric impulses and overwhelming desires have taken over. Driven by instinct, she arrives in a lowly human city. Controlled by pure emotion, her actions and words are quite dangerous, but her underlying personality remains mostly unchanged. The only big difference is her increased selfishness and changed attitude toward humans.
Luminous Body
Rapid expansion (Inflation). A phenomenon more simply called "Luminous Body".
An excited state only possessed by True Ancestor royalty. When a True Ancestor's body is completely destroyed by some means, this reaction is said to occur. It was the result of Arcueid, a "small yet massive being", losing the container called 'body' and consequently having the compressed magical energy released, causing her lifescale to expand. Arcueid's consciousness exists at the core of the light, but since the barrier called 'body' doesn't exist, it is a state where in this excess of magical energy "an image of herself as she imagines it" is projected and diffused.
If a True Ancestor still brimming with magical energy is imperfectly destroyed, it will reemerge through just this energy that had been stored within its body and destroy human settlements in the form of a calamity, as a revenge mechanism. Inflation does not occur with Arcueid having her power stolen by Roa and fatally wasting away, but the Arcueid in Ciel route who killed Roa, was troubled by the bug that was her love for Shiki, and could no longer control her bloodsucking impulse could cause this phenomenon. Or rather, ended up causing it.
