World (disambiguation)

The term World (世界, Sekai^?) is an extremely nuanced word in TYPE-MOON's shared setting. Its meaning can greatly vary depending on the context:

• Texture (敷物(テクスチャー), Shikimono(Tekusuchā)^?) - A Texture is a conceptual layer thinly extending across the surface of a Planet. This is the primary meaning of the word "World" used in the World of Magecraft.
  • Anti-World (対界, Tai-kai^?) - This is a term used to describe attacks, primarily Noble Phantasms, that can harm or destroy Textures.
• Route: World (世界(ルート), Sekai(Ruto)^?)- Alternate timelines like Parallel Worlds (並行世界, Heikō Sekai^?, also "Adjacent Worlds") are sometimes referred to as "worlds" or "alternate worlds."
• Earth (地球(ちきゅう), Chikyū^?) - The Planet Earth, particularly Gaia, its will, is sometimes referred to as the "world" in a loose sense.
• Universe (宇宙, Uchū^?) - While the word "world" (Sekai in Japanese) is sometimes used to refer to the universe in a broad sense, TYPE-MOON works usually used the proper kanji 宇宙 (Uchū) to refer to space and the cosmos. The amount of times "world" has been used to refer to the universe in an official work is negligeable, if not non existent.^{[Note 1]}
