Dead Apostles (死徒, Shito?) are one of two types of vampires, those that were not originally vampires. They are beings that start off as humans, animals, or anything else that isn't a bloodsucker by nature that are later turned by a True Ancestor or another Dead Apostle.[1] In rare cases, Dead Apostles are converted through magecraft, such as Van-Fem.[2][1]

After becoming vampires, Dead Apostles gain an imperfect but immortal body, and cease to be something that could be considered human.[1] The pinnacle of the Dead Apostles are known as The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, a group of Twenty-seven rank IX Dead Apostles.[3]

Origin

Dead Apostles were originally created by the True Ancestors sometime during the Age of Gods to serve as emergency rations or rather "painkillers" for their Vampiric Impulse in case they would no longer be able to hold them back. A True Ancestor would prepare a single underling that be kept alive and would serve as their painkillers.[4] Eventually, Twenty Seven of those old Dead Apostles would break free from their role as emergency rations and achieved victory in their struggle for independence as wholly distinct beings.[5] They would become known as The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, a group of rank IX Dead Apostles who gained power surpassing the True Ancestors through Idea Blood.[6]

Dead Apostles first started appearing frequently around 20~100 AD, deeming magi their enemies and attacking them.[7] Around 300 AD, the Dead Apostles of Europe were at their most rampant and in order to combat their immortality, the Holy Church used gospel to revert the bodies of the Dead Apostles back to corpses that returned to dust. They developed the first Scripture, "blades" made of gospels referred to as Black Keys. Black Keys were Sacraments created with the lament for the dead——litanies——as their basis.[8] During 300 AD, the Magician of the Second Magic, Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg rallied the Mage's Association into an army and waged war against the Crimson Moon, the creator and King of Vampires and his many Dead Apostles, in the Millennium Castle Brunestud. Zelretch was able to defeat the King of Vampires and the Third of the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors but was turned in the process by the latter, inheriting the Third's Idea Blood and seat.[7][9] Following the creation of Arcueid Brunestud, the Fallen True Ancestors and many of the Dead Apostles sired by them would be hunted down by her.[4]

Every Crusade was marked by the appearance of a Dead Apostle on the battlefield, each attacking humans indiscriminately on all sides of the war.[10] In the First CrusadeWP, Nrvnqsr Chaos attacked and "stained the desert with blood."[10] During the Second CrusadeWP, different Dead Apostles appeared, rampaging for three days and nights.[10] During the Third CrusadeWP, another new Dead Apostle appeared, but it was eventually slain through the combined effort of Richard I, SaladinWP, and the Hassan-i-Sabbah of that period.[10][11]

Dead Apostle Deinos.

Dead Apostle Deinos.

In the South American Lostbelt, there exists a species of Dead Apostle Deinos (死徒ディノス, Shito Dinosu?) created by Camazotz. Initially believed to simply be unintelligent dinosaurs, these Deinos have had their brains deteriorated and lost their intelligence, and are now neither living nor dead. Tepeu describes them as the jungle's malignant tumours that hunt animals around them to convert them into energy. They cannot be communicated with, and the only options when encountered are to run or to stop them.[12] Sion Eltnam Sokaris states they are vampires, and had their blood sucked out by another vampire to become one. She states that the lack of intelligence and shambling walk means they are Ghouls, akin to shambling corpses that instinctively seek blood, meaning they are lower-tier familiars of a vampire that have been given some of that vampire's immortal blood. When killed, they disintegrate into dust.[13]

Characteristics

Unlike True Ancestors, Dead Apostles have to suck human blood in order to survive. They possess an imperfect immortality as they need to constantly replenish their energy by drinking blood or they will die. The longer a Dead Apostle lives the higher their lifescale (存在規模(ライフスケール), Sonzai Kibo(Raifusukēru)?) climbs. This increases their power and scale of existence, however the genes that make up their own bodies also become less likely to be able to bear the load of all the extra atoms. However If a Dead Apostle doesn't continue to increase their strength they'll collapse, but if they increase their strength too much, they will no longer be able to maintain their own form. In order to overcome this, Dead Apostles simply take in normal genes elsewhere to supplement the ones that are lost. They gather both that normal genetic information and calories from blood.[1] For the Dead Apostles, the blood of virgins is more suitable for replenishing their genes. This is because virgin blood — which has not yet been mixed with the bodily fluids of other humans — is more nutritious than regular blood.[1]

Familiars of another species being used.

Familiars of another species being used.

The use of familiars from different species is also somewhat more widespread. These familiars are created when a Dead Apostle feeds his immortal blood to a living creature or when the creature had it's blood sucked and has been turned into either a Rank I Corpse or into a Rank II Ghoul. These creatures cannot disobey their master as there is both a mental and physical connection between the two. Some Dead Apostles use familiars to compensate for their damaged bodies as the longer a vampire lives, the harder it is for ordinary cells to make up for their decaying body. That's why they capture powerful beasts and use them to supplement it. This allows them to take the form of their familiar. Dead Apostles are able to take one member of the Phantasmal Species that belongs to the Monstrous Beast or Phantasmal Beast-class as familiar into their bodies in order to repair their life force as these beasts surpass the human species in this respect. However, they are only able to take in one as their soul will become clouded if they take in too many. Only one Dead Apostle is known to have taken in more than one beast.[1] Dead Apostles can possess 1-3 animals, as too many animals would cloud their sense of self. Stronger Dead Apostles were known to have used Familiars of different animal species simultaneously, showing that the strength of the user's willpower is apart from others. Those Dead Apostles who repair their own bodies with beasts can return them to their previous forms and use them as Familiars when they need to.[1]

Contrary to popular belief, vampirification is not the transformation of the body, but of existence. It’s like if the entry in the Root that read human changed class to Dead Apostle — it means that one has become a vampire in one’s very being. So one cannot undo vampirification by putting your soul into a human physical body, such as Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg using the Second Magic to transfer his soul to another physical body in a parallel timeline; as one who has inherited the Idea Blood of one of the Dead Apostle Ancestors, he has been infected on the soul-level, making it impossible for him not to be.[9]

Dead Apostles possess a set of standard abilities which include things such as levitation and the ability to turn invisible.[14] Additionally, since they are related through the True Ancestors with the Moon, the lunar cycle over the Earth has effects on them. Granting to them more power than their normal state depending on the lunar cycle: they are weakest during the new moon and it is in the night of a full moon the time when the Dead Apostles reach the height of their strength.[15]

It is implied that a full-fledged Dead Apostle does not need to breathe oxygen,[16] and although Dead Apostles share their "deathlessness" that they have with their underlings, Dead Apostles cannot pass on their own Principles, their unique one of a kind curse. Additionally Dead Apostles from Rank VI upwards have lost the human capacity to reproduce despite retaining lust and sexual desire; they cannot produce true offspring.[17]

Dead Apostle Ancestors who created a lineage of Dead Apostles are able to bestow additional powers to them. Jester Karture's lineage as a Dead Apostle originates from Van-Fem, and his action of abandoning Jester causes Jester’s vampiric abilities to degrade.[18][19]

Dead Apostles usually possess Mystic Eyes as the eyeball is a useful and powerful Magic Circuit.[1] The most common and generally the most useful type is the Mystic Eyes of Enchantment, which are capable of high-level hypnosis within the user's field of vision by making direct eye contact with their victim. A rare number of powerful Dead Apostles posses Mystic Eyes of Enchantment that are able to tap into a person's brain and take complete control of their thoughts. While some Dead Apostles possess other forms of Mystic Eyes, most of them are considered useless in the world of vampires.[1]

Dead Apostles are also known for turning into mist and there are two known versions of it. The high-grade type is the one that involves actual particle transformation. It's a technique that diffuses one's "self", scattering the particles that make up one's body. There are only a few Dead Apostles who can do this over a wide area and for a long period of time. The lesser version is by transferring their consciousness into body doubles, which all Dead Apostles can create, to acquire information from a different perspective. Once this body double has served it's purpose, they cut the magical energy flow and it returns to dust, which gives them the impression of turning into mist.[1]

A Dead Apostle's Curse of Restoration.

A Dead Apostle's Curse of Restoration.

Dead Apostles have a regenerative power that operates under normal conditions called Curse of Restoration (復元呪詛, Fukugen Juso?). The Curse of Restoration do not simply heal a Dead Apostle, but causes their bodies to turn their time backwards to a point in which they were unharmed; thus, you cannot cause wounds greater than the speed of their recovery. As their internal flow of blood fuels their power and very being, their abilities are greatly diminshed when that circulation is disrupted. As their heart is the seat of their soul, it is possible to destroy a Dead Apostle by tearing their heart out. Crushing or destroying the heart within the body is insufficient, as they can restore it at the cost of a great deal of their supply of blood, but removing it cleanly will cause their Curse of Restoration to be disrupted and their physical body to wither.[20] The Curse of Restoration is also tied to the phases of the moon. As the moon waxes, the degree of injury that can be repaired, as well as the speed of the regression increases dramatically.[15] If the Dead Apostle lacks a supply of blood they will also be unable to regenerate. It's possible for Dead Apostles to recover even after they have perished if their vassal Dead Apostles repair the body and infuse it with potent blood, however, except Michael Roa Valdamjong, no Dead Apostle can resurrect from total annihilation on their own even with the lunar cycle aiding them.[17]

While Dead Apostles possess tremendous abilities and "superpowers", those skills are acquired due to their long lifespan which allows them to further hone their original abilities they had when they were human. As such, it's possible for humans to acquire abilities on par with Dead Apostles if their lifespans were equal.[17] Vampire blood itself contains Ether, which holds the power to materialize whatever they want. But it is limited to the form their soul - which contains their memories, mind, and Magic Circuits - takes.

Dead Apostles from Rank IV till Dead Apostles from Rank IX have a sharper awareness and can sense the individual depth of the vampiric curse in each other at close proximity and one anothers location unless they make an effort of concealing it at will. High-ranking Dead Apostles are also difficult to trap in an illusion, requiring a lot of work, but this can be done with the full power of Francois Prelati's Noble Phantasm or effortlessly with the Mystic Eyes of Roses.[21]

In terms of weaknesses, Dead Apostles are weak to sunlight, magical energy depletion, and as they're unable to completely rid themselves of the shared awareness of being human, they are defeated when faced with religious cleansing rites such as Sacraments.[1][22]

The Dead Apostles can "deny" the power of Noble Phantasms made by man or those the Gods prepared for man, rendering them useless. Such a compatibility Advantage comes only against humans wielding such weapons, so if a Heroic Spirit wielded those same Noble Phantasms, or if the Noble Phantasms were made by the Gods for the Gods, it would work against the Dead Apostles.[23] This happens because Dead Apostles are beings that deny Human Order; they exist to defile its rules. In essence, this makes them opposed to the Heroic Spirits, who affirm Human Order and exist to preserve the rules of the Human World.[23]

Principle

A Principle in action.

A Principle in action.

Once a Dead Apostle reaches rank V, the curse within their blood allows them to manifest special powers deriving from their sire or perhaps arising from their own self. It's a unique power separate from their other properties as a vampire. This special one-of-a-kind curse is referred to as a Principle: Texture Seed (テクスチャルールの種(原理), Tekusucharūru no Tane(Genri)?).[24][17] According to Mario Gallo Bestino, most of the Dead Apostle Ancestors' Principles originate from something that the individual vampires studied when they were human, and after they became vampires, such Principles become their thesis, purpose for living, their undying curse and path to obtaining true Immortality.[25]

Principles do not simply grant transcendental abilities, instead manifesting uniquely based on the possessor’s characteristics. These Principles are also known as World Eggs in Thaumaturgical Theory.[26] For Ancestors the Principle is linked to the Idea Blood, and is normally not granted to the Idea Blood's inheritor. Since each Principle is unique they cannot be imitated and if copied, like the Idea Replica used by Dr. Arach, they lose their uniqueness and become weak. Therefore, the next generation does not inherit the ability of the previous generation, but develops a new Principle according to its own initial ability. The only known exception is Roa; he was able to detune it and reconfigure it for one's own use, as it was the goal of his fifteenth incarnation, Ciel,[27][17] Roa's masterpiece.[28] Vlov Arkhangel later used this technique after he was tricked by Roa into killing his Ancestor and stealing her Idea Blood and Principle.[17]

The Rank VI Dead Apostle Michael Roa Valdamjong developed a method of Reincarnation, which workings seem to be derived from a Principle that he stole from his sire Arcueid Brunestud in the past.[25][17] The artificially induced transformation of Noel, through the special drug Idea Replica, into a powerful Rank VI Dead Apostle allowed her to acquire the Mystic Eyes of Roses from the Dead Apostle Ancestor Rita Rozay-en.[29][6] Noel also physically regresses to her fourteen-year-old self and developed the additional Principle to create and manipulate a large number of spears (bells) and to materialize the church from her traumatic past and it's surrounding area into reality.[6][29][30][31][32]

Society

In the world of the Dead Apostles, the "Kings" and "Queens" are the The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors. The very pinnacle of Dead Apostles above the Successors who not even True Ancestors can lay a finger on.[8] They're ancient Dead Apostles who once broke free from their role as emergency food, winning their independence, and establishing themselves as completely different beings. They are the ones who laid the foundations for the vampire society. Their Successors are referred to as either princes (王子, Ōji?) or princesses (王女, Ōjo?), who is in a position to inherit the Idea Blood of a Dead Apostle Ancestor upon that Ancestor's destruction. Assuming a minimum of two Successors for each Ancestor, Arcueid Brunestud estimates that there are 50 of them total.[33]

In Dead Apostle society, "family" is used to indicate one's carefully acquired underlings. Those that Dead Apostles of Rank VI and above treat as their "sons" or "daughters" were once humans; adopted for their talents and later turned into Dead Apostles when the time was right. There are clans that are related by blood in the real sense, but that's only because they were related back when they were still alive. One such example is Lord Rozay-en who became a Dead Apostle together with his daughters. He holds one of the largest factions within the Dead Apostle society.[17]

The situation regarding the Ancestors' alliances is complex. While most Ancestors rule their own factions like Lord Rozay-en[17] and many of the other Ancestors are fundamentally individualistic in nature, there is one notable exception; a grouping of five Elder Titles who are in an alliance known as the Age of Gods Alliance (神代同盟, Jindai Dōmei?).[3]

Dead Apostles invade cities by first looking for strong, suitable victims, suck their blood and turn them into servants. These servants, usually of Rank III and above, can blend in with human society, because they retain their own free will and personality from when they were human. They expand their influence and begin to prey on other humans. The Dead Apostles themselves go into hiding once they have enough followers in order to sleep inside their coffin. They let their followers collect flesh and blood for themselves, but most of it is sent to the Dead Apostle.

Higher-ranked Dead Apostles are careful not to operate too openly when feeding, as to avoid attracting attention from the Executors. The relationship between the two is like that of criminals and the police, with the mere presence of Executors in an area putting Dead Apostles on high alert and reducing their activity.[34]

Growth Process

Dead Apostles who suck the blood of humans and replace it with their own blood pass on the curse of vampirism, as their victims are now reborn as vampires under the control of their sire. The curse of vampirism is divided into several steps according to its depth and the name of each step is derived from the Church, it has also become a common terminology in the World of Magecraft. The Dead Apostles themselves see the depth of the curse as a caste system, of social standing in vampiric society, in which Rank I-III are slaves, Rank IV-V are subordinates and Rank VI-IX are vampires. While the normal growth process starts as an Rank III slave and from there you can ascend the system, their is also the possibility that, when your potential is high enough and an Rank VI or above creates a Rank IV subordinate, you rise directly to Rank V.

The special vampiric conversion drug: Idea Replica.

The special vampiric conversion drug: Idea Replica.

In contrast, Dr. Arach possesses a special drug known as Idea Replica that will force the vampiric conversion upon any human that takes it, even if they would not normally be able to develop into a Dead Apostle. Further doses of this drug accelerate the development process to the point where entire stages of growth are skipped completely, but an increased risk of a lethal overdose occurs with each state this bypassed.[6] However, the Idea Replica is still at a prototype stage. The more the one who has taken the Idea Replica keeps relying on the said artificial Dead Apostle powers and takes their victims' bloods, their body will progressively break down and disintegrate, then die in the process.[35] In Fate Worlds, Norikata Emiya developed a potion with similar properties as part of his attempt to reach the Root.[36] Due to having turned himself through magecraft, Van-Fem does not need to resort to bloodsucking as a medium to turn people into Dead Apostles, with his method even those with low aptitude can be turned into Dead Apostles. The entire staff of Fem's Casa are Dead Apostles.[2]

When a human becomes a Dead Apostle, their body often will transform into the most beautiful form it can take, a process which can change both the Dead Apostle’s apparent physical age and physical features. They become an erotic work of art to which ordinary humans can’t compare. What precisely this looks like depends on the ideals of the newly turned Dead Apostle. In the case of Noel, her body regressed to resemble her 14-year-old self, and her face became more beautiful according to her standards.[6]

Ranks Explanation
Rank I: Corpse (死者, Shisha?, alternatively "Zombie") A marionette dancing to the tune of its sire. A being that had it's blood sucked and then replaced with that of the sire's. A corpse that will return to being dead if left without orders. A mere grunt which simply sucks blood and delivers it to it's sire. One of what are called "The Dead".[37]
Rank II: Ghoul (屍鬼, Shiki?) A corpse mimicking the form it had in life, possessing a will yet incapable of coherent thought. While its sire's magical energy keeps it from decaying, its insides have completely disintegrated. As the brain's decomposition causes it to seek flesh and blood instinctively, it is more savage than a Rank I: Corpse, as they can devour people in less than a few minutes. Could be described as a 100% loyal soldier that can be programmed by its sire, it also dies with it's sire's death or by the sire's decision to cut off their magical energy connection.
Only one in a hundred people have the aptitude (immunity to resist the blood of the blood-sucking species) to reach this rank. However, even if they have the same aptitude, they may die depending on their viability. Among them, only those who can adapt to the blood of their sire and can endure can become Rank IV or higher. Counted among "The Dead".[38]
Some of these Ghouls may be mutated according to the whims of their master, such as Vlov Arkhangel's Dead filled with ice and Flaming Dead, created when Vlov exposes a living being or one of the Dead to his powers of ice and fire,[39][24] and the spider-like monstrosities created by the spider-like Ancestor that seems to be related to Dr. Arach, possibly the same person.[29][40]
Rank III: Undead (不死, Fushi?) From this point on a creature that can finally be called a vampire. A living corpse, that hasn't fully regained its mental faculties and lacks its sense of pain and taste, but can simulate a human lifestyle on its own. A high-ranking soldier whose brain has been reconstructed after death, that follows its sire after understanding what kind of creature it has become. They are still bound to their sire and return to being corpses when their sire gets destroyed or by the sire's decision that they are not needed anymore. These undead act as commanders to the lower ranked Dead and are not fazed by sunlight, but require periodic embalming treatment in order to conceal their true nature. Counted among "The Dead".[41]
Rank IV: Nightkin (夜属, Yazoku?) An undead who acts as a fledgling vampire while maintaining its original personality. A half-human vampire whose inhuman physical abilities come at the cost of experiencing extreme coldness and thirst. A low-ranking knight, that according to the Church becomes able to crush most Executors. When those of Rank VI and above carefully drink the blood of their prey, their victim starts out as a vampire of this rank. They may become anemic under the sunlight, though it doesn't burn them yet.
In the magical world, one is considered "a person" up to this rank. A vampire who has reached Rank IV can now survive away from its sire. From the sire's point of view it has changed from an "object" to a "living thing", in a sense. Only one in a thousand people are able to reach this rank.[42]
Rank V: Nightmare (夜魔, Yama?) Adding to the scope of Rank IV, at this point the curse within their blood allows them to manifest special powers deriving from their sire or perhaps arising from their own self. A High-ranking knight — a fully fledged vampire,[43] that according to the Church can win against multiple Executors acting in concert.
Rank VI: Dead Apostle (Inferior) (死徒 (下級), Shito (Kakyū)?) A completely self-sufficient bloodsucker, who has lost the human ability to procreate. Though these Lords can create children through their bloodsucking incursions, they cannot sire a child that can exceed Rank VI — what you'd call a limit to these upstarts. Only one out of ten thousand people are able to reach this rank.
The vampire lurking in Souya is of this rank. Villages fall prey to the disaster that is a "parent" raising minions. Vlov Arkhangel too was classified in this rank, but somehow managed to skip ahead.[44]
Rank VII: Dead Apostle (Superior) (死徒 (上級), Shito (Jōkyū)?) Greater Dead Apostle. Those of Rank VI who were acknowledged by an Ancestor and bestowed with additional abilities. Though they share a name, this rank is of a wholly different scale from the previous one. To reach this rank is to become a poison that taints the land simply by existing.
They are a heresy that ordinary Executors cannot cross blades with, noble vampires permitted their own free will. Greater Dead Apostles do not show absolute obedience to their parent Ancestors; given the chance they can defeat them and inherit their curse. However, even if they gained the same "freedom", there is a vast difference in the years the Ancestors have lived, making it difficult for a Greater Dead Apostle to surmount the scale of an Ancestor's existence.[45]
Also called Superior Dead Apostles (上級死徒, Jōkyū Shito?), this is the level displayed by Ancestors' Fate Worlds counterparts in which Dead Apostles are weaker due to the strength of the Human Order being greater than Tsukihime Worlds. They are regarded as monsters spoken of in fairy tales, beyond human understanding.[46]
Rank VIII: Successor (後継者, Kōkeisha?) A talented vampire chosen by an Ancestor as their own successor. A prince (王子, Ōji?) or princess (王女, Ōjo?), who is in a position to inherit the Idea Blood of a Dead Apostle Ancestor upon that Ancestor's destruction. Among the Ancestors are also some who were captivated by beings that were not vampires and unexpectedly raised them to this rank.
Assuming a minimum of two Successors for each Ancestor, there are more than fifty Rank VIII individuals. Some of them are even said to have been created in imitation of the True Ancestors. Vampires of this rank are mighty, standing head and shoulder above Vlov — who achieved entry into the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors — in terms of their fundamental reserves.[47] They are so powerful not even True Ancestors can lay a finger on them.[8]
Rank IX: Ancestor (祖, So?) The old Dead Apostles who broke free from their role as emergency rations and achieved victory in their struggle for independence as wholly distinct beings. A "crimson stain that fell from the moon onto the Earth" (月から地上に落ちた真紅の染み, "Tsuki kara chijō ni ochita shinku no shimi"?). Long-lived beings who take in the life of humans and give rise to Rank VI Dead Apostles. Kings and Queens who have established the structure of vampire society that exists to this day, with each of them possessing their own Idea Blood.
The scale of their existence differs on an individual basis, but they can be categorized into the "elders" (古参, Kosan?), active from before the Common Era, and the "upstarts" (新参, Shinzan?), whose activities began in the Common Era. Vlov, having killed the Ancestor that had been his parent of the last hundred years, became one such new "upstart" Ancestor.[5]
Ancestors are the very pinnacle of all Dead Apostles and each of them are considered big names that would require the Burial Agency to take on.[48] They are monsters that can fight on even grounds with Gods who have manifested their full Authority.[46][49]

    The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors
The 27 individuals who are the apex of Dead Apostles. It is a title that represents their way of being. Though exceptions like the "League of the Age of Gods" of the five old-timers do exist, each is said to be fundamentally individualistic, while not all of them are enemies of man.

In their three thousand year long history some seats have emptied, and apart from those six that are Offenbaum's - Vlov's parent's - "idea" as well as the ideas of 「ripening」,「castle, therefore kingdom」,「sword」, and then the「melting」and「four limbs」 that are sealed by the Church, the remaining ones whose existence has been verified number twenty-one.

Though it takes the Holy Church a hundred years from preparation to execution in order to seal a single ancestor, they are thought to have succeeded only twice. Considering this, it's easy to see how irregular Tohno Shiki's defeat of Vlov was.

(Being that at this time, the Faculty of Policies was treated still as an academic faculty, there were twelve faculties.)

    Circa 1400 AD

Zepia assumes posting as the Director of the Academy at Atlas.
Said posting subsequently persists unto present day.

    Circa 1600 AD

The Faculty of Policies is in its manner of existence viewed as problematic, and its standing as an academic faculty is annulled.
Subsequently, it becomes as the Department of Policies, and the twelve academic faculties are amended to eleven.

    Circa 1800 AD

    England, the Industrial Revolution.
Though this was as a severe blow to the thaumaturgical world, escalation in the complexity of knowledge and technology did likewise confer certain benefits.
Being as unto the Holy Church — which had by pushing 「a singular worldview」 expanded its influence — it constituted an unparalleled attack, the Association even provided backing.
Contemporaneous, the internal conflict on the matter of whether to regard the Industrial Revolution with affirmation did subsequently become as the root cause of the dispute between the Aristocratic and Democratic Factions.
The genre of modern thaumaturgical theory could no longer be disregarded, and was appended to fill the slot of the lost twelfth faculty.
However, even that it had been appended in the capacity of a twelfth faculty, being as modern magecraft was itself still held in contempt, no governor (Lord) was at this stage yet assigned.

    Circa 1994 AD

Lord El-Melloi dies in Japan to a trivial ritual known as the War for the Holy Grail.

    Zelretch Kishur Schweinorg

    Overview
The Wizard Marshall. One of the oldest mages, having been active since before the common era.
When the war between Crimson Moon and the Mages Association broke out around 300 AD, the mages were too preoccupied with their own single-player antics to be able to function as an army, so Zelretch took them by the neck and unified them, becoming feared as the Wizard Marshall in the process.
He repelled Crimson Moon, but in the process the #3 of the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors charged him and sucked his blood, and though he defeated this one too, he was ultimately turned into a Dead Apostle.
Afterward, he was to become mankind’s enemy, unable to oppose Crimson Moon… but he just thought ‘I wasn’t mankind’s ally to begin with—kinda just wanna go retire’, taking the opportunity to disappear from the center stage of magecraft.

After becoming one of the 27 Ancestors, he came to understand Crimson Moon’s views, and began hating him even further.
On the other hand, after comprehending the system behind the 27 Ancestors, he became aware of the other Ancestors’ way of being, and so stopped hating vampires themselves. After all, some of the Ancestors were far more pure in their scholarship compared to the Mages Association’s advocates of pre-established privileges.

    Appearance
From his outward appearance he looks like to be in his 60s. His facial features are Germanic.
He is a stern-looking elder, his gray (originally blond) hair in a dishevelled back sweep, though on account of his youthful expressions, he can also look to be in his fifties.
190 cm tall, well-built, with excellent posture—the very stereotype of an esteemed military-man.
Consult the picture book that came with the Tsukihime anime as a bonus prologue for how his clothes look.

    Personality
    Lawful Good.
    Extroverted, self-assured, proactive.
A thoughtful sage—one who assesses the whole and imagines a bright future. Though he has a scary look that makes others distance themselves from him, he is a man of social justice and has good and honest morals.
However, though he has them, that doesn’t mean he applies them to himself, and is rather a man of freedom who does whatever he likes.
“I’ll force rules upon the Mages Association for the sake of a brighter future, but I never said I’d follow those rules myself” is something he actually follows through with.
He has the same attitude as a grandpa who often laughs as he watches over the life of his mischievous grandchild.
Though he is an observer, he will still butt into arguments (in fact, if someone is about to make a blunder, he will warn them, a smile on his face), and if he realizes things are about to spill over onto him, he will childishly hinder it with full force. That’s the kind of adult he is.
Zelretch generally sees himself as an alumnus who has already graduated from ‘Earth Academy’. Meaning, as long as the academy itself doesn’t go under, he will just warmly watch on from afar at the various problems afflicting it—broad-mindedly thinking something like “I did about the same when I was young”
The highlight of Zelretch’s life was his showdown with Crimson Moon, so everything beyond that he sees as nothing more than ‘the rest of his days’.
Although, that is precisely why he’s very proactive when it comes to assessing the situation surrounding Crimson Moon. One could see it as taking care of the aftermath of his adolescent period. The reason Zelretch headed for the castle of the True Ancestors and blessed the birth of Arcueid was because she was the factor who would take his place in bringing an end to the Crimson Moon problem.

    Manner of Talking
    His first-person pronoun is ‘washi’.
He calls people by their personal name. If he has respect for someone of a more noble personage, he will use their appropriate title of honor—‘princess’, ‘king’ and so forth.
If who he’s talking to is someone he personally likes, he may go as far inadvertently calling them “omae-san”.
He does not use ‘~ja’ or ‘‘~jawai’ or such, at the end of his sentences.
He speaks like a dignified elder, but try to keep in mind that his sentences are a bit youthful here and there.
“I intended to remain youthful forever, but it didn’t quite go as I wanted”
The ideal is to avoid long sentences—make him come through with each individual word.

    Abilities
The father of jewel magecraft—to store magical energy in minerals, stabilize them and use it for various applications in life and for supporting civilization.
Even if we assume that the Earth did not fall into the hands of humanity—remaining in the Age of Gods—he might have still piloted rockets using just his jewels.

The Second Magic concerns the attestation and application of parallel worlds.
By making it possible to travel to parallel worlds, he proved that there is still room for the world to develop in different ways.
Thanks to this, the world’s lifespan has been extended. Even if our history fails, and we destroy ourselves, there might still be others of us out there—this concept granted hope to the planet, which had been in the process of losing its dreams.
Zelretch’s method for travelling through parallel words is a simple one—he transfers himself to a jewel in a different temporal axis.
For example: if he wants to transfer from World A to World B, he will gather jewels in World B until they gather up enough to take Zelretch’s shape, and then Zelretch’s soul will transfer over. In an instant, the jewel golem transforms into Zelretch. At that point, the Zelretch in World A will turn back into its original form as a pile of jewels.
As long as minerals and jewels exist there, he can travel into any world he wishes, but as he only has a single soul, he cannot be active in all of them at once.
He originally travelled with just his physical body, but because of various circumstances he eventually settled for this method as it was the easiest.
In addition, as a small amount of time lag occurs when he travels, he is also capable of a tiny bit of time travel as well.
To answer the question of ‘if he doesn’t travel with his physical body, how could he be a Dead Apostle?’—as someone who has inherited the Hemonomic Principle of one of the 27 Ancestors, he has been corrupted on the soul-level, so it's impossible for him not to be.
Vampirification is not the transformation of the body, but of existence. It’s like if the entry in the Akashic Records that read ‘human’ changed class to ‘Dead Apostle’—to become a vampire in one’s very being.

    Career
One of the oldest mages, having been active since B.C. Also one of King Solomon’s pupils.
After Solomon's death, Zelretch witnessed the end of the Age of Gods with his own eyes, and then disappeared from the center stage.
Afterward, when one of his fellow students (Brissan) was starting up the Mages Association, he helped out in laying its foundations.
As a result, the mages who had not perished became involved in the war against Crimson Moon 200 years later. In this battle, Zelretch transformed from human to Dead Apostle.
He has been observing many different parallel words ever since, detachedly spectating the course of their events.

    Standing

    Attitude toward the Mages Association
Due to his promise with Yumina, and the fact that he is old acquaintances with the headmaster, he shows up now and then to act as an advisor for them. He has accepted the weakening of mage ideals as something that happens. However, if some weakling comes before him and starts going off about their own theories he will beat them and their weak character into shape.
When there are issues concerning Magic, he appears before the Association and delivers fair and just judgment.

    Attitude toward the Holy Church
He does not concern himself with them in the slightest.

    Attitude toward the Dead Apostles
He does not interfere with them as long as they do not cause some particularly large-scale mischief.
He has seen through the mechanisms behind the 27 Ancestors, but has deliberately chosen to quietly observe them. He is tea-drinking companions with the three idiots of Agape, Lovematroos and Caubac. Rumors have it that he becomes like a simple grandpa doting on his grandchild when dealing with Agape.

    Attitude toward the True Ancestors
Zelretch is highly regarded among the True Ancestors as he is one of the most prominent mages in the human world.
Zelretch, on account of having been alive since before the common era, is friendly with the elementals known as the True Ancestors, and often provides them with counsel:
“Kishua, hey, listen. You know that ‘Christianity’ thing humans are doing among each other? What’s that? A new type of magecraft system?
“That’s a detailed Manual to Mankind’s Prosperity. It will one day even turn out to be a best-seller. Well, it’s for the best if you don’t know much about it. You’d probably lose your minds.
“I see, if you say so, then it’s probably true. By the way, I’d like to try a bit of that wine they make in Bourgogne. Could you get some?
    Stuff like this.

    Attitude toward Rin
‘Tohsaka’s descendants sure did well! Alright, there aren’t any Magician seats left, but I will hammer some unreasonably difficult magecraft into you! They’re things I’ve worked out but unfortunately never taught anyone!’ So he goes, a bit happily.
Anyone who is a Magician’s pupil is first started off with a living hell where they might accidentally destroy the universe—like with Aoko from Mahoyo. Although Rin never minded it that much, instead simply tilting her head, wondering if maybe she had just had some kind of tremendously hellish thing shown to her, after which she kept puking for a whole month.

    Worldbuilding
In our latest work TsukiRE, the worldbuilding inherited from the previous version has been updated to be deeper and more modern.
There are a few things that are not going to be revealed yet, but I would like to introduce some things that were part of that update.

    Setting
The city goes by the name of Souya.
In the old version, we used a provincial city as the setting, but now it’s been changed to an urban one. A fantastic place, neighboring a gigantic factory about four stations away, reminiscent of the Tokyo-Yokahama Industrial Area.
The protagonist’s highschool lies close to a residential area far from the station, so he does not hang out there on his way home from school. On the ends of this residential district lies a forest that has been there since ancient times, and by this forest’s entrance lies the mansion of the great landowner Tohno family.

    Mystic Eyes of Death Perception
The peculiar ability possessed by the protagonist Shiki. Categorized as a psychic ability.
He can see the normally imperceivable ‘lines of death’, something akin to the point of collapse in all things.
These lines of death are like seams, which means all it takes to sever an object is to run a blade through them.
The strength and hardness of the object does not matter. No matter how hard or frail, the feeling is always the same. Perceivable = Cuttable.
In addition, as things dismembered by the lines of death ‘kills’ that specific part, no healing is possible. This is because the severed part has died on the existential level, even if it only looks like it has been cut.

Shiki is a living being and thus able to better understand the death of things that are alive just as he is—this is why he unconsciously perceives the lines of death of the living.
However, Shiki himself can stress his consciousness and overexert his eyeballs to visualize even the ordinarily incomprehensible lines of death on inanimate objects, through which he can perceive even the ‘death of space—death of existence’, as an ultimate locality. (Shiki’s brain is unable to withstand seeing the lines to this level)

In addition to the lines of death, there are the points of death, which stand above the lines.
If the lines of death are blood vessels, the points of death are hearts.
Those that have had their point of death pierced are killed in literally a single strike. Just as in the case with the ‘death of space’, Shiki has to overexert himself, or else he cannot see them.

An important point is that while the lines of death exist in all things, there are differences in how distinct they are.
Putting it simply: the lines of death are lifespan.
He can easily perceive the death of humans who only have the lifespan of about fifty to a hundred years, but it is difficult for him to perceive the death of existences who possess a lifespan in the hundreds or thousands of years.
Meaning, as long as he is trying to perceive the concept of death as a shape, he cannot quite so readily grasp it coming from things that are difficult to kill.
This is the reasoning behind why when Shiki is up against Greater Dead Apostles or Arcueid in the story, he has to push his consciousness to the limit if he wants to perceive their deaths.

(*Greater Dead Apostles are ‘hard to kill’, while Arcueid ‘cannot die’. Shiki’s murder of Arcueid in the beginning of the game made the impossible possible. In the Tsukihime world, things like Arcueid dying or Arcueid being killed were events outside of what was normal.)

    Psychic Abilities
Special abilities endowed to the body from birth such as those possessed by Shiki, Kohaku and Hisui are known as psychic abilities.
They are impossible to gain after birth through either training or study.
Through successive inbreeding, it is possible to pass on these psychic abilities to some extent, even if it is not possible to perfectly reproduce the ability possessed by the parent.
Shiki, who comes from a clan known as Nanaya that have passed along a mutant gene, could be seen as an even further mutation.
(*The Nanayas’ special ability is not associated with ‘death’, but rather concerns ‘karma’. The reason this altered into ‘death’ with Shiki is because of his near-death experience)

    Mixbloods
Those that have inherited the blood of ancient purebloods, like the Tohno and Saiki.
Pureblooded species are non-humans (oni-kind), or alternatively those that have strayed from being human and turned into onis.
As they have inherited the role of nature’s sense of touch (output devices), they have abilities different from those of psychic ones.
Psychic abilities are ultimately something which the human performs on their own, while the abilities gained through mixed blood is natural interference/natural contact—not something manifested by just one’s own personal abilities (one’s brain).
In addition, psychic abilities (generally) abide by physical laws, while the abilities of mixbloods often do not. Fantastic stories, folklore, tales of old—in order words, unnatural phenomena which cannot occur in reality.
Psychic abilities and mixbloods have a relationship similar to that of magecraft and magic.

    Magecraft and Hexcraft
Technology used by Ciel and Roa. Known as magecraft—spatial interference and application methods based on rituals (systems).
Anyone can use it with enough training, but the potency depends on the individual’s own qualities (the number and quality of their Magic Circuits).
In the story of Tsukihime, runes, kabbalah, hexcraft, witchcraft, wonderworking, etc, are all bundled together as magecraft. Xian arts and esoteric buddhism are also included in this, but as they are part of a different faction, they are not brought up in Tsukihime.
It is basically all-purpose, but cannot make the impossible possible.
At the end of the day, magecraft is a technique for abbreviating the processes of methods possible to the individual themselves.
Even if there was magecraft that allowed one to go to the moon, it would still require preparation with costs on par with—or even exceeding—that of actually creating a rocket.
“Sure, it’s amazing being able to shoot fire from one’s hands—but nothing more than just amazing. If all you wanna do is shoot some fire, wouldn’t it be more efficient to just bring a blowtorch?”
This is the simplest explanation you can give regarding magecraft in TYPE-MOON lore.
You could say that magecraft is something which modern science can substitute for.
But you could also say that magecraft can substitute for science.
Seperate from this, that which can perform things impossible to realize through modern human technology is what is called Magic.
By the time of Tsukihime’s story, that which can be called Magic have decreased to five.

    True Ancestors
Those treated as the ‘original bloodsuckers’ in the Tsukihime world.
They are the cause of the vampires who run rampant among the public, even if the True Ancestors themselves are a far cry from the common perception people have surrounding vampires.
They are few in number and exceedingly close to immortal.
Even if they are exposed to sunlight, it would only ever give them slight anemia, and they are not affected by the cleansing rites employed by any religions either.
True Ancestors are not individuals independent of the natural world like humans, but an older species still at one with nature.
That they’re often misunderstood as undying and eternally youthful is because they are the planet’s sense of touch. In the first place their time-scale is different from that of humans.
Their lifespan is naturally immense; its limits, so to speak, are only those of nature itself. True Ancestors and fairies are something akin to the planet’s white blood cells. So they possess abilities sufficient to exterminate any of the various factors which would do harm to the planet.
However, at the time of their birth, a singular error occurred within them.
Probably due to the influence of that after which they were modeled.
They turned out to possess the desire—the primordial, survival-oriented desire—to ingest the blood of intelligent lifeforms.
Moreover, because they were incarnated as protectors, their objectivity was diluted. They gained autonomy, as one of the many species living on the planet. Basically, they came in possession of a sense of values closer to that of a human’s.

As they have ceased to be free of self-interest—such as noncorporeal elementals ought to be—they have lost sight of their role as protectors, to the point that among them some have even become like humans, and gained independence from the natural world.
Those known as the True Ancestors have no limits.
As a result of being provided back-up from the planet, if the need should arise, they can strengthen their abilities until that need is met. (However, the amount and speed that each True Ancestor can increase it by differs per individual)
In addition, the power of their will is enough to take actual form, meaning that the thoughts of the True Ancestor becomes a weapon on its own, influencing even the world.
Fantasy Materialization—also known as Marble Phantasm—the reformulation of the world through probabilistic fluctuations.
However, they cannot directly interfere with individuals that have become independent from the world like humans or animals. Humans have weakened by distancing themselves from nature, but at same time, will not perish even if nature itself does—obtaining absolute freedom. At the of the day, Marble Phantasm can only freely exert change unto the environment and the situation.
As a slight digression, if the ridiculous situation of a castle appearing in the middle of a city at night was to occur, this is thought to be because the vampire (True Ancestor) suzerain of it willed it into creation.

The True Ancestors are a species which are practically gods, but they do have a flaw.
Though True Ancestors, they are still bloodsuckers. It is the very act of sucking blood itself which serves as their silver stake to the heart.
Though they are the cause that created the vampires (Dead Apostle) on Earth, they themselves have absolutely no need for drinking blood to continue living. The energy they need for that they can get through the ingestion of calories.
That said, they cannot go against their instinct as a species (to ingest and partake in the information of intelligent life = bloodsucking), which results in them sucking the blood of humans.
They execute humans in order to bring harmony to nature—though in actuality, they need them more than anything else in order to fulfill their own desires.
This contradiction causes the minds of these proud beings to collapse in on themselves. The more blood these proud elementals suck, the more they degenerate into beasts, craving pleasure the same as any human would.

This degeneration is rightly called ‘falling to evil’.
True Ancestors which have this happen to them forget the consciousness they have birthed for themselves and become a powerful vampire who begins corrupting the world.
As they do not have lifespans, ‘to lose sight of their values’ is the same as their ‘death of self’.
In order to prevent this death of consciousness, True Ancestors use a large part of their abilities to inhibit their vampiric urges.
The longer they withstand their desire to suck blood, the more it grows, yet they keep suppressing it—an unending battle of perseverance. By slamming the tremendous power of their will up against their own mind, they can control their desire to drink human blood.
Invariably, as they hold back on sucking blood more and more, the time eventually comes when they realize that they cannot suppress their vampiric urges any longer and so they enter into an eternal sleep by their own will. This is the activity threshold for those with an endless lifespan—one could perhaps say it is what humans would actually call their lifespan.

    Dead Apostles
Something much like what the public at large imagines of a vampire.
Weak to sunlight, sucks human blood, transforms into beasts or mist and is immortal.
Called vampires in the game out of a consideration to make things easier to understand.
*However, the creature known as the vampire started being talked about in the 1900s. In real folklore, they are actually the monster with the least pedigree. In contrast, werewolves, who are often seen as their henchmen, are a monster passed down from days of old—in fact, parts of what the vampire was modeled after was taken from the characteristics of werewolves.
That’s why in the world of Tsukihime, they are more properly treated as bloodsuckers—the general term for things that suck blood from their own kind.

Dead Apostles are—just as one would imagine from their name—dead. They are divided into those that have been transformed into one by some kind of magecraft, and those that have had their blood sucked by a True Ancestor, and become its puppet.
Unlike True Ancestors, both of these kinds have to suck human blood in order to survive. Blood is considered a necessity for their vital activities.
They are also weak to sunlight, and as they are unable to completely rid themselves of the shared awareness of being human, they are defeated when faced with religious cleansing rites.

A marionette dancing to the tune of its master. A corpse that will return to being dead if left without orders. A mere grunt which simply sucks blood and delivers it to its master. One of what are called "The Dead".

  38. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank ⅠI Vampire: Ghoul, p.99

    Rank ⅠI Vampire: Ghoul
A corpse mimicking the form it had in life, possessing a will yet incapable of coherent thought. While its master's magical energy keeps it from decaying, its insides have completely disintegrated. As the brain's decomposition causes it to seek flesh and blood instinctively, it is more savage that a Rank Ⅰ Corpse. Could be described as a soldier. Counted among "The Dead".

  41. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank III Vampire: Undead, p.99

    Rank III Vampire: Undead
From this point on a creature can finally be called a vampire. A living corpse. Undead. Although it hasn't fully regained its mental faculties, it can simulate a human lifestyle on its own. A high-ranking soldier whose brain has been reconstructed after death. It is not fazed by sunlight, but requires periodic embalming treatment so as to conceal its true nature. Counted among "The Dead".

  42. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank IV Vampire: Nightkin, p.99

    Rank IV Vampire: Nightkin
An undead who acts as a fledgling vampire while maintaining its original personality.

A half-human vampire whose inhuman physical abilities come at the cost of experiencing extreme coldness and thirst. A low-ranking knight, so to speak. When those of Rank Ⅵ and above drink the blood of their prey assiduously, their victim starts out as a vampire of this rank. They become anemic under the sunlight, though it doesn't burn them yet.

In the world of magecraft, one is considered "a person" up to this rank. A vampire who has reached Rank Ⅳ can now survive away from its parent. From their point of view it has changed from an "object" to a "living thing", in a sense. Only one in a thousand people are able to reach this rank.

  43. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank V Vampire: Nightmare, p.99

    Rank V Vampire: Nightmare
Adding to the scope of Rank Ⅳ, at this point the curse within their blood allows them to manifest special powers deriving from their parent vampire, or perhaps arising from their own self. High-ranking knight — a fully fledged vampire.

  44. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank VI Vampire: Lesser Dead Apostle, p.99

Rank VI Vampire: Lesser Dead Apostle
A completely self-sufficient bloodsucker. Though they can create children through their bloodsucking incursions, they cannot sire a child that can exceed Rank Ⅵ - what you'd call a limit to these upstarts.

The vampire lurking in Souya is of this rank. Villages fall prey to the disaster that is a "parent" raising minions. Vlov too was classified in this rank, but somehow managed to skip ahead.

  45. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank VII Vampire: Greater Dead Apostle, p.99-100

Rank VII Vampire: Greater Dead Apostle
Greater Dead Apostle. Those of Rank Ⅵ who were acknowledged by an Ancestor and bestowed with additional abilities.

However, even if they gained the same "freedom", there is a vast difference in the years the Ancestors have lived, making it difficult for a Greater Dead Apostle to surmount the lifescale of an Ancestor.

  46. 46.0 46.1 The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II Volume 8: Fem's Casa (Lower) - Chapter 2
  47. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank VIII Vampire: Successor, p.100

    Rank VIII Vampire: Successor
A talented vampire chosen by an Ancestor as their own successor. A prince or princess, as it were. Among the Ancestors are also some who were captivated by beings that were not vampires and unexpectedly raised them to this rank.

Assuming a minimum of two for each Ancestor, there are more than fifty Rank Ⅷ individuals. Some of them are even said to have been created in imitation of the True Ancestors. Vampires of this rank are mighty, surpassing Vlov - who achieved entry into the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors - in terms of their fundamental reserves.
