The Showa Restoration Singularity is a Singularity during the Human Order Revision in Fate/Grand Order.

The events of Chaldea's visit to this Singularity are covered in an event of Cosmos of the Lostbelt; GUDAGUDA Ryouma's Close Call! (ぐだぐだ龍馬危機一髪!?), referring to the sixth collaboration between Fate/Grand Order and Fate/KOHA-ACE.

Setting

Map of the Singularity.

The Singularity is a world where Sakamoto Ryouma didn't die at the Omiya Incident, and therefore, did not become a Counter Guardian.[1] He also kept Ama-no-Sakahoko after freeing Oryou, but they never became associated with one another. In this world, a Holy Grail War was held in Edo between the new government and the shogunate to determine who would rule Japan known as the Boshin Holy Grail War.[2] The Servants summoned for this Grail War included: Takasugi Shinsaku, Takechi Zuizan, Izumo-no-Okuni, Tanaka Shinbei, Ryouma, and Mori Ranmaru.[3][2][4]

But Ryouma became possessed by the evil god Ama-no-Sakagami, who proceeded to kill Ranmaru and take his Noble Phantasm, Nobunaga's missing head.[1][4] It then conspired with Takasugi and tricked the other Servants into killing the key figures of the new government and the shogunate; Okuni avoided joining in the massacre thanks to Takasugi. This event would come to be publicly known as the "Bloody Surrender of Edo Castle"[2], the complete opposite of the event that would lead to Meiji Restoration. Edo was then destroyed, resulting in the shogunate's collapse.[5] Afterward, Takasugi seized the Holy Grail and used it with Nobunaga's head held by Sakagami to create the Singularity with several historical divergences. As a result, the Singularity became unable to be corrected, even with the Grail's power, and the Servants that should've disappeared following the Grail War's conclusion instead stayed.[3][4]

Moving the capital from Edo to Saitama[5], Takasugi founded Takasugi Heavy Industries and presumably reconstructed the city into Restoration City "SAITAMA" using the Grail's power. SAITAMA is powered by six magical reactors, one for each sector, all connected to central reactor in the city's center called Resotration Reactor YAMATO.[3][5] The construction of the Restoration City became known as the Showa Restoration, even though in the Proper Human History, the Showa era began in 1926. Civilization also advanced significantly with the Showa Restoration, far beyond what the actual era would have.[5] For his actions, Takasugi was praised as the Hero of Restoration, but Takechi and Shinbei opposed him and reformed the Kinno Party they were part of in life to take the city and restorie the shogunate.[3]

Desiring a permanent vessel, Sakagami asked Takasugi to construct one. Takasugi agreed and began the Kishin Project.[6][7] But the true purpose of the project is to fulfill Taksugi's ideal of constructing a man-made god to serve as the people's eternal ruler.[6] Not knowing its partner's true intentions, Sakagami met with Takechi as Ryouma. Takechi believed his story that Takasugi used him as a scapegoat for the "Bloody Surrender of Edo Castle" and accepted him into the Kinno.[8] Meanwhile, the disembodied Ranmaru called to the stars for someone to protect Nobunaga's head in their place, inadvertently calling Mysterious Ranmaru X to the planet.[9]

History

Part 1

The Mystery of the Missing Nobbu Head

Oda Nobunaga’s head is missing, and she hasn’t a clue what happened to it. She and the others go to the command room to get Leonardo da Vinci's help, but she declines on account of not wanting to deal with GUDAGUDA particles. Sion Eltnam Sokaris, who finds the situation hilarious, thinks either Nobunaga is missing a part of Spirit Origin or that it’s phased out of alignment.[10]

Suddenly Oda Nobukatsu tells his sister that he found her head and gives it to her. But to Nobunaga’s disappointment, the “head” her brother gave her is just a doodle of her that he made on a stick to act as a poor substitute for her missing head.[10]

Da Vinci informs the others that while they were having their antics she located Nobunaga’s head in a Singularity near Tokyo set during the Meiji Restoration. However, it seems the Singularity has certain conditions limiting what Spirit Origins can rayshift to it. Hijikata Toshizou, Okita Souji, and Saito Hajime, for example, are unable to rayshift to the Singularity. Okita assumes it’s because they’re Shinsengumi, but Sion corrects her that the same conditions also prevent Li Shuwen, Okita Alter, and Mash from rayshifting. Incidentally, Nobunaga can rayshift there, but she decides to not go on account of her not having a head.[10]

Okita questions who will accompany Ritsuka this time when Chacha announces she and Mori Nagayoshi will go. Sion says they both qualify, but Nobunaga has some serious doubts that the two of them can find her head. Fortunately for her, Sakamoto Ryouma and Oryou decide to go as well, though Ryouma also wants to see the Meiji era since he never got to see it when he was alive.[10]

With Ritsuka’s party determined, Da Vinci prepares to initiate the rayshift when Okada Izou enters the room wearing a western-style outfit he ordered from Miss Crane’s shop and joins as well. Da Vinci then rayshifts the party though she did ignore the fact that the coordinates were a bit off.[10]

An alarm suddenly goes off: an unidentified flying object has been detected approaching Chaldea’s airspace at Mach 49. Sion tries to get a better read on it, but the target has already slipped in via some unknown technology. The intruder soon arrives in the command room.[10]

She fights Hijikata, Okita, Saito, Shuwen, and Okita Alter when they try to stop her. Becoming overwhelmed, the intruder resorts to using the Ranmaru Strahl to blind everyone (Nobunaga notices the name Ranmaru) and enters a Coffin to rayshift herself.[10]

Planet Ranmaru, Twinkling in the Night Sky

Restoration City SAITAMA

Restoration City SAITAMA

Ritsuka arrives in the Singularity alone for unknown reasons. Upon arriving, they hear a tv broadcast provided by Takasugi Industries describing how it’s been five years since the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle. From the ruins of Edo, Ki-ki Restoration City, SAITAMA, was established as a new capital and at its heart the Restoration Engine “YAMATO” has provided the prosperity everyone enjoys today.[5]

The broadcast switches to a report from the Takasugi Industries Military Police. The report warns that the Kinnou Shishi are increasing their terrorist efforts throughout Kasukabe Block, so citizens are strongly advised to stay clear until the situation is resolved. Citizens complain about how the terrorism of the old regime loyalists has no place in the Showa Restoration.[5]

A girl with an eyepatch then crash lands on Ritsuka. She tries to kill them, but Ritsuka avoids her attacks twice. The girl is baffled about how that can be, considering she was considered a sword fighting prodigy on her home planet when she realizes she is depleted of Ranmanium. Ranmanium is the mysterious element that powers her clan’s magic circuits, but it seems it doesn’t exist on this planet. She will die without it so she cries about how she will now never meet her clan’s expectations or find someone to share her life with. Ritsuka offers to help her, which surprises the girl given she had just tried to kill them.[5]

Ryouma suddenly appears, though he looks different from usual, and orders the Nobbus with him to kill the girl. Ritsuka saves her, so Ryouma decides to kill both of them. The girl tells Ryouma she is the only one allowed to kill Ritsuka, but she is too weak to even defend herself. She mentions the only way to regain her strength is to form a contract with a Master with Command Spells, but such a thing is a legend on her planet.

To her surprise, Ritsuka shows they have Command Spells, so the girl requests they be her Master temporarily. Ritsuka agrees and contracts with her, giving her a surge of Ranmanium. Seeing they have Command Spells, Ryouma decides to have Ritsuka eliminated as an anomaly. The girl fights Ryouma’s Nobbu, naming herself Mysterious Ranmaru X.

With his subordinates defeated, Ryouma considers retreating when he notices Chacha and Nagayoshi. He casts a strange spell on both of them, but it doesn’t seem to affect Nagayoshi. Chacha, however, is filled with unfathomable hatred, seeing everyone as Tokugawa. Ryouma takes this opportunity to escape.[5]

Chacha attacks everyone. Fortunately for Ritsuka, Oryou arrives just in time to protect them. Chaldea’s Ryouma soon shows up relieved to see they finally found Ritsuka. Ranmaru X is on guard against him assuming he is the same Ryouma from before, but Ritsuka reassures her he and Oryou can be trusted. Ryouma deduces Chacha is being controlled by some magecraft, so he and Oryou help subdue her.[5]

New Sakamoto Detective Agency

New Sakamoto Detective Agency

With Chacha back to normal, Ryouma and Oryou take everyone to an office. There he asks Ranmaru X why she came to this city. Ranmaru X answers she was drawn by its MRG signal when she suddenly feels she had a very important objective, but she can’t seem to remember. Nevertheless, even though their contract is only temporary, she intends to serve Ritsuka faithfully.[5]

Nagayoshi asks where they are. Oryou is a bit annoyed that he never heard of the New Sakamoto Detective Agency. Ritsuka is surprised that Ryouma had set up another agency like he did in the Imperial Capital. Ryouma reveals for whatever reason when they rayshifted to the Singularity they were all sent to different points of time, which is why they got separated. He and Oryou arrived a little before the rest of them, so they established a base of operations while they looked for the others.[5]

After having tea Ranmaru X had made, Ryouma explains they are in Ki-ki Restoration City, SAITAMA, which replaced Edo as the new capital after the former was destroyed five years ago. The Bloodless Opening Edo Castle had never happened like it did in Proper Human History. Instead, countless people from the shogunate and several key figures from Satsuma and Choushu were killed. Edo was destroyed in the ensuing conflict, resulting in the fall of the shogunate. From there, SAITAMA, which is in the Musashi province, was named the new capital of Japan.

The Meiji Restoration also never occured in the Singularity’s timeline. Instead, events skipped over both Japan’s’ Meiji and Taishou eras and straight into the Showa, so the reformation that took place was known as the Showa Restoration. In Proper Human History, the Showa era began in 1926, but in the Singularity, thanks to finding a way to convert magical energy into electric power, technology had advanced fifty years ahead of what should be 1870s Japan.[5]

Nagayoshi asks who came to rule Japan after the Tokugawa. Ryouma reveals that since most of the key figures from the Satchou Alliance were killed in the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle, SAITAMA is now governed by a military conglomerate called Takasugi Industries. He and Oryou both recognize the name Takasugi.[5]

Ranmaru X asks Ryouma about his look-a-like, swearing to kill him for threatening Ritsuka’s life. Ryouma doesn’t know about that and decides to include it in his investigations. Oryou then announces the New Sakamoto Detective Agency is now open for business. Everyone agrees to help with it, for which Ryouma is thankful.[5]

Meanwhile, Izou wanders the city by himself when he unexpectedly meets someone familiar.[5]

The Man-Slayer and the Man-Slayer

On June 2, 1581, Akechi Mitsuhide assaulted Nobunaga’s position at Honnōji, setting the temple on fire in the process. Mori Ranmaru informed Nobunaga of Akechi’s betrayal and implored her to escape while he and YasukeWP held off Akechi’s men. Nobunaga, however, knew Akechi would never let her escape. Akechi called for his men to bring him Nobunaga’s head.[11]

Nobunaga ordered Ranmaru to escape, but Ranmaru refused to leave her side. Nobunaga ordered him to take her head and escape, not wanting Akechi to get it so she could make his life miserable one last time. She further told Ranmaru to dispose of her head somewhere no one could ever find it once he escaped. Ramaru reluctantly followed her orders and proceeded to cut off her head.

In the present, Ryouma and Oryou left the office this morning and left Ranmaru X in charge. Nagayoshi informs Ranmaru X that he and the others came to the Singularity to look for Nobunaga’s missing head. Ranmaru X gets a sudden headache upon hearing this and runs out of the office. Ritsuka follows after her.[11]

Ranmaru X tells Ritsuka that she went on her journey for what she assumes is a very important reason, but she can’t remember. Ritsuka reassured her that she’ll remember eventually.[11]

Suddenly a muscular man comes to try to kidnap Ritsuka. Ranmaru attacks him to protect Ritsuka, only to find her attacks are useless against him. The man, in response, then charges up for an attack.[11]

Meanwhile, in the office, Nagayoshi and Chacha are fighting Nobbu, but Nagayoshi knows it is just a diversion and the enemy’s real target is Ritsuka.[11]

Ritsuka moves to protect Ranmaru X from the man’s incoming attack with their own body. Fortunately, Nagayoshi arrives just in time to take the blow himself. The man is surprised Nagayoshi survived his first strike, impressed by his resilience. Regardless, Nagayoshi can’t move anymore.[11]

The man offers to leave if Ranmaru X and Nagayoshi hand Ritsuka over. They refuse, so he prepares to kill them both and take Ritsuka by force. But a woman appears and offers to assist the heroes, albeit for a price; Ritsuka selects one of three offered payment options. The man presumes the woman is one of Takasugi’s “dogs”. The woman then calls forth her robot Zanzaburou and fights Ritsuka’s would-be kidnapper, introducing herself as Izumo-no-Okuni.[11]

Okuni pushes the man back, but he remains undefeated. Izou arrives to retrieve him, pointing out to him that all his shouting has attracted attention. The man agrees to go with Izou, but he tells the woman to tell Takasugi that the Kinnou Party will never submit. Izou advises Ritsuka they go back to Chaldea for their own good before leaving.[11]

After Okuni leaves, Ritsuka, Ranmaru X, and Nagayoshi return to the office. Ritsuka informs Ryouma about Izou, while Oryou treats Nagayoshi with her saliva. Ryouma says he learned a lot more about the city while out investigating. He also found someone he wants Ritsuka to meet: an old friend of his, the president of Takasugi Industries, Takasugi Shinsaku.[11]

Kiheitai

Arriving at Takasugi Industries, the heroes are greeted personally by Takasugi. In his office, he begins to tell them about the opposition: the Showa Kinnou and their leader, Takechi Zuizan.[3]

Meanwhile, at the Showa Kinnou’s hideout, Takechi expresses disappointment in Tanaka Shinbei for failing him. He doesn’t resent him, though, because he underestimated Ritsuka as well and there wasn’t much Shinbei could do once Takasugi decided to interfere.[3]

The other Ryouma mentions that the heroes have made contact with Takasugi and wonders what they’re up to. Takechi says it doesn’t matter because it’s clear what they’re after. He refuses to tell Izou what he means because he only needs to do what he is told, warning the manslayer that he will not tolerate another disgrace like what happened back then. He then tells his compatriots that they will ensure Takasugi receives divine punishment and that the Kinnou lead Japan once more. The other Ryouma leaves.[3]

Takasugi explains the Kinnou Party is obsessed with reviving the Bakumatsu era, willing to commit all manner of crimes to achieve their goal. He was debating his next course of action when Ryouma came to him, which surprised him since he was certain he joined the Kinnou Party. The heroes realize he is talking about the other Ryouma.[3]

Ignoring the existence of another Ryouma for now, Takasugi asks for the heroes’ help in defeating the Kinnou Party, claiming he wants to destroy the Singularity. The Kinnou Party once ruled the Singularity and after the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle, they began shaping Japan into a country of their liking. But Takasugi stopped and created the Showa Restoration using a Holy Grail.[3]

He reveals the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle was in truth a Holy Grail War for which he and Takechi summoned shortly after their deaths. They fought each other for the Grail amidst a conflux of events that resulted in deaths of everyone who survived in the original timeline. In the end, the Grail came into Takasugi’s possession and with its power, the Singularity solidified into what it is now.[3]

Chacha asks him why he didn’t use the Grail to destroy the Singularity if that is his goal. Takasugi admits he tried, but the Grail’s power couldn’t repair the Singularity, so he had no other choice but to reform the city with him as its leader. Ryouma concludes Nobunaga’s head is what is blocking the Grail’s power, revealing the Kinnou Party got their hands on it. He can’t prove it yet but he suspects her head is mixed up with the Singularity’s origin.[3]

Takasugi proposes they form an alliance to accomplish their goals of finding Nobunaga’s head and dismantling the Singularity. Ritsuka agrees only for Takasugi to order his men to kill Ritsuka. Fortunately, Nagayoshi deflects all the bullets fired at Ritsuka. But then Takasugi uses his Noble Phantasm to don his men in special armor, calling them Kiheitai.[3]

The heroes defeat the Kiheitai. Takasugi confesses he was only testing their skills to see if their alliance will be worthwhile. Now officially allies, he promises his full support, as well as that of Takasugi Industries.[3]

Changing topics, Takasugi explains SAITAMA is divided into different blocks with the Restoration Tower (Takasugi Industries HQ) at the center. Each block also has a magical reactor named after its respective block, which provides the people living there with the resources they need. Unfortunately, the Kinnou Party’s sabotage has brought resource distribution to a halt. Takasugi promises the heroes a share of the resources generated by the reactors if they guard them while investigating the Singularity.[3]

Restoration Hero

On March 1862, Ryouma informed Takechi of his decision to leave Tosa Kinnoutou and become a ronin. He knew a samurai leaving their clan without permission is tantamount to betraying their lord and he would be killed if caught, but he wanted to see the world outside of Tosa. Takechi thought Ryouma was being unrealistic and told him only they of the Kinnou Party could change Tosa’s state of affairs which favors high-ranking daimyo retainers, since they actually are from Tosa.[12]

Ryouma told Takechi that in America, anyone can freely participate in the government regardless of who they are or where they’re from. Takechi thought that was just nonsense  people from Chousou told Ryouma in Edo though and remained adamant that the Kinnou are the only ones who can change things in Tosa. He proclaimed they will reshape Tosa in their image, convince their lord to go to the capital, and get rid of the foreigners once and for all. But Ryouma refused to change his mind, so Takechi kicked him out of the Kinnou Party and allowed him to leave.[12]

The next morning, Izou returned from Edo and learned from Takechi that Ryouma quit the Kinnou Party and left Tosa. Izou was very upset that Ryouma only told Takechi and not him, even though they’ve known each other their whole lives. Interrupting his rant about how everyone but Ryouma treated him like an idiot, Takechi told Izou he had a favor to ask him.[12]

In the present at the detective agency Ryouma informs the others that the man who tried to kidnap RItsuka was a man-slayer named Shinbei. He and Izou both worked for the Kinnou under Takechi’s command, but Shinbei particularly admired Takechi and would do anything for Takechi’s ideals. Said ideals involved the Kinnou taking total charge of Tosa, and ensuring that the Sonnou Joui supporters in the capital rose to power.[12]

Sonnou Joui was an expression during Ryouma’s time that referred to serving the Imperial Court rather than the shogunate, and to expelling all things foreign from Japan. Izou and Shinbei killed anyone who stood in Takechi’s way of making the Sonnou Joui ideal a reality. But then Shinbei was arrested as a suspect in an assassination plot and killed himself before he could be questioned. Eventually, other political changes led to the Kinnou Party losing momentum, and Takechi and Izoi were both arrested by the Tosa authorities.[12]

Chacha doesn;t understand Takechi and Izou were arrested when it seems like they were just doing their best to help Tosa. Ryouma explains in Tosa, low-ranking samurai were under an oppressive caste system. Life became harder for them as the years went by, which led to Takechi, himself, and others like them forming the Kinnou Party and trying to fight back.[12]

Moving on, Ryouma recommends they find the Kinnou Party’s hideout when Takasugi enters the office, understanding the former wants everyone to split up to cover more ground. He decides his men will investigate Kasukabe Block and provides the others with a map of all the city’s blocks and an ID card to allow access to any block. Ryouma decides he and Oryou will investigate Iruma. Takasugi tells the others to investigate Kawaguchi, recalling it is near where Edo once was and there had been a number of Kinnou Party sightings there as well.[12]

The heroes find the Kinnou Party’s hideout at Kawaguchi after fighting through a horde of Nobbu, though they only find Shinbei there. Shinbei pulls out a box; Ranmaru X finds both the box and its magical energy familiar somehow and gets a sudden painful headache. A number of Nobbu then emerge from the box. Ranmaru X suddenly collapses.[12]

Shinbei prepares to kill the heroes when the lights go out all the sudden. Okuni appears under a spotlight, declaring she will not let Shinbei harm her valued customer. The lights turn back on and Shinbei tries to use the box to summon more Nobbu, only to find it isn’t working. Okuni points to the Bounded Field she had established during her dramatic entrance. It is an evil-sealing formation and as long as Shinbei is inside it, he can’t use the box. Okuni calls forth Zanzaburou and helps fight Shinbei.[12]

Okuni prepares to defeat Shinbei only for him to destroy her Bounded Field and retreat, swearing to kill her when they next meet. After he’s gone, Okuni confesses she was chasing the most notorious criminal in the Showa Restoration: Ryouma.[12]

The Two Ryoumas

Ryouma and Oryou locate the Kinnou Party’s headquarters. They try to head back and report to the others, but they’re stopped by Izou. Oryou asks him why he betrayed them, wondering if he had been brainwashed again. Izou tells her to shut up saying he and Ryouma have something to discuss. Ryouma asks him if he has been in contact with Takechi, but Izou says Ryouma has no right to lecture him questioning who the real traitor is.[2]

The other Ryouma appears and accuses Ryouma of being his impostor, an accusation Ryouma throws back at him. Oryou is confident she can tell the difference between an impostor and the real Ryouma, only to get very upset when she can’t tell the difference.[2]

At the detective agency, Okuni says Ryouma was the mastermind behind the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle and the Kinnou Party’s co-conspirator. She, Ryouma, Takasugi, Shinbei, and Takechi were the Servants summoned for the Grail War, which was essentially a proxy war between the new government and the shogunate to determine who would rule Japan. Though it was a Grail, Ryouma wished to settle it without bloodshed and convinced everyone to give a peaceful discussion a chance.[2]

It was all a ploy, however, by Ryouma, Takechi, and Takasugi, the three of whom formed a secret alliance. They ambushed the other Servants and afterward killed all the key figures in the armies of both the new government and the shogunate. Okuni only survived thanks to Takasugi helping her escape. Takasugi then acquired the Grail after betraying Ryouma and Takechi, which should have ended the war, but the Singularity still remains.[2]

Nagayoshi asks Okuni why she is after Ryouma now. Okuni answers that she researched things at Takasugi’s company and found that Ryouma was closely tied to the Singularity’s inception being the first Servant summoned in the Boshin Holy Grail War. She has therefore been pursuing with Takasugi’s help and her investigation led to that box everyone saw earlier.[2]

Ranmaru X regains consciousness, wanting to know more about the box. Okuni admits she could only determine it is a profoundly cursed object. Ranmaru X feels she knows what is inside the box as if it has been calling her out to her this whole time. Okuni thinks the quickest way to find out what is in the box is to ask Ryouma directly.[2]

Chacha agrees, finding the Ryouma who cast that weird spell to be quite suspicious. Nagayoshi notes how he wasn’t accompanied by Oryou. Okuni asks who Oryou is unaware of who she is.[2]

Meanwhile, Oryou is still confused about which Ryouma is the real one and even Izou isn’t sure if Ryouma is an impostor or not. Ryouma, now wary of the situation, tries to escape with Oryou, only to be stopped by Izou.[2]

The other Ryouma tells Oryou to come back to him, saying her place is beside him and calls her an inhuman monster of a god. Oryou tries to attack him when the other Ryouma pulls out the Ama-no-Sakahoko, the spear that once bound her to the land. Oryou seems to lose herself in a rage.[2]

Meanwhile, the Chaldeans tell Okuni about Oryou, but she can only think of her as a mere monster. She thinks it’s only a time before Oryou turns on them and starts to recommend they kill her before that happens when the other Ryouma and Oryou enter the office. Oryou immediately attacks, seemingly proving that Okuni was right to not trust her. The other Ryouma calls Oryou a devourer of nation and commands her to eat the heroes, forcing the heroes to fight her.[2]

Takasugi eventually arrives and orders his Kiheitai fire a flashbang to blind Oryou and the other Ryouma. The heroes take this chance to escape on Takasugi’s truck. Elsewhere, Takechi and Izou visit Ryouma in his prison cell.[2]

Don't Say Goodbye

A flashback shows the first time Ryouma and Oryou met. Oryou told Ryouma about her past and implored him to remove the heavenly spear which bound her to the land in exchange for her granting him his heart’s desire. But Ryouma freed her out of pity and left the mountain. Oryou was so astonished that she forgot she meant to eat him after tricking him into freeing her. Intrigued, she followed after him.[8]

In the present, Takasugi confirms the other Ryouma is the one who fought during the Boshin Grail War. He admits he had his suspicions that there were two Ryoumas when Ryouma showed up with Oryou when she wasn’t around before. His suspicions were why he had Okuni investigate Ryouma.[8]

He then informs everyone that Chaldea’s Ryouma has been captured. He had hoped Ryouma would kill the other Ryouma, but he never thought he would lose with Oryou at his side. He confirms to Okuni that Oryou had accompanied Ryouma back when he was alive as well. She started to follow him everywhere at some point and protected him from would-be assassins. Takasugi doesn’t know how someone managed to assassinate Ryouma after his own death, though.[8]

Okuni finds it strange that the Ryouma from the Boshin Grail War didn’t have Oryou with him even though she is his Noble Phantasm. Takasugi presumes he was just hiding her, but Okuni argues both Ryoumas should be accompanied by Oryou since she is his Noble Phantasm. Takasugi realizes that means that the Ryouma without Oryou is the impostor, but he and Okuni don’t know why she is with him now.

Suddenly one of Takasugi’s employees enters and reports that the Kinnou Party just announced they will execute Ryouma.[8]

In a video message addressed to the citizens of SAITAMA, Takechi claims Takasugi was the true mastermind behind the Bloody Opening of Edo Castle, destroyed Edo, and framed Ryouma for his crimes while presenting himself as the hero who saved everyone. He further claims Chaldea’s Ryouma is fake sent out by Takasugi to slaughter citizens to slander the Kinnou Party because they knew the truth.[8]

Then presenting the “real” Ryouma, Takechi promises he will clear Ryouma’s name, bring Takasugi to justice, and raise the true Kinnou flag in Saitama. They will begin at 10:00 tomorrow morning with the execution of the “fake” Ryouma. Takechi ends the video, calling the upcoming execution the Kinnou Party’s declaration of war to the city’s true enemy.[8]

The heroes agree Chaldea’s Ryouma cannot be an impostor, meaning the real impostor is the one with Takechi. Ritsuka wants to rescue Ryouma, not caring that it is likely a trap. Nagayoshi, Chacha, and Ranmaru X decide to go as well, with Ranmaru X wanting to know more about that box. Takasugi decides not to go, believing they should do something more stylish.[8]

Meanwhile, Takechi and the other Ryouma discuss whether or not the heroes will come for Ryouma. Takechi doesn’t care if they know it’s a trap or not because he still needs to make Takasugi pay for betraying the Kinnou’s goal of using the Grail to remake Japan in their image. The other Ryouma agrees that Takasugi must die for them to realize their dream.[8]

Takechi asks the other Ryouma what he did with Oryou. The other Ryouma answers she is sleeping in his room, noting she consumes a lot of magical energy. He then goes back to his room.[8]

Izou asks Takechi if he is sure they can trust the other Ryouma, feeling like there is something off with him. Takechi reminds him he only needs to worry about following his orders. Izou tries to argue, but Shinbei tells him a man like him could never understand how Takechi thinks. Takechi stops the two from getting into an argument and leaves with Shinbei to attend to other business.[8]

Visiting his cell, Izou asks Ryouma if he really is Ryouma. Ryouma says he isn’t sure because he is a completely different person than he was back then. Before he died, he made a contract with the world and became a Servant thinking he’d be able to help more people, but to his dismay, it didn’t work out that way. Some people thought he was an arms dealer back when he was alive, so now he wonders if he is a Servant born from his living self’s mistakes and the other Ryouma is what he was really like.[8]

Tired of listening to Ryouma’s self-pity, Izou repeats his question, wanting to know if Ryouma is the same person who ditched him and Takechi to leave Tosa. Ryouma affirms he is feeling the same now as he did back then. It is one part of him that will never change and proof that he is himself.[8]

Izou opens Ryouma’s cell door and tells him to escape, accepting that Ryouma is the same person he knew back then. He knows Oryou feels the same, but he thinks there is more to it for her. Ryouma is sure that the other Ryouma isn’t an impostor and he really is him. Izou again tells Ryouma to escape, disliking that Oryou is being controlled. Ryouma escapes, promising Izou they’ll see each other again.[8]

After Ryouma is gone, Izou calls out to the hidden Shinbei, questioning why he let Ryouma escape. Shinbei says he’ll catch Ryouma, but first he wants to kill Izou for his treachery. Izou boasts he is a sword prodigy and copies Shinsebi’s Jigenryu, much to the latter’s disgust. Shinbei expresses his hatred for Izou and attacks him for once again betraying Takechi’s trust.[8]

Let My Voice Carry to the Stars

That night Takasugi brings the heroes to the Kinnou Party’s headquarters. He knew its location all along, yet he had the Chaldeans search for it because the box produces Nobbu and because he hoped to put off fighting the Kinnou Party until later.[4]

He then attaches an extra large, rapid-fire fireworks launcher onto Nagayoshi’s armor and promptly activates it, launching him. He does the same to Chacha except with a sparkler. The two land in an area swarming with Nobbu and start fighting the former. With those two acting as a diversion like Takasugi planned, Ritsuka, Ranmaru X, and Okuni infiltrate the Kinnou Party’s headquarters.[4]

Inside, Shinbei has brought Izou before Takechi, who is disappointed that Izou has betrayed the Kinnou Party. Izou tries to turn Shinbei against Takechi by telling him that Takechi used his sword when he killed Anegakouji, then gave the sword to him to pin the murder on Satsuma. But Shinbei surprises Izou by revealing he already knew and expresses his willingness to die for Takechi’s ideals. He prepares to kill Izou, but Takechi orders him to put Izou in a cell.[4]

An alarm suddenly sounds off; a Nobbu reports it is an enemy attack, with the enemy charging at the front attack. Takechi deduces Takasugi is responsible and that the frontal assault is just a diversion. He orders his comrade to ignore it and make sure their defenses are airtight. The other Ryouma heads out to remove the intruders.[4]

Ritsuka, Ranmaru X, and Okuni have successfully infiltrated the Kinnou Party’s headquarters. Ranmaru X, understanding they knew each other during the Grail War, asks Okuni how she and Takasugi ended up working together. Okuni confesses she responded to the summons to the Grail War because she is searching for the evil god who destroyed her hometown.[4]

On the same subject, Okuni asks Ranmaru X what brought her to the Singularity. Ranmaru X answers that it all began when she heard someone calling to her. All of a sudden she gets another headache, and she tells Ritsuka to follow her. Ritsuka and Okuni follow her to a room inside which is a certain something. The heroes enter the room after Zanzaburoru busts down the doors on Okuni’s orders.[4]

A shrine with the box containining Nobunaga's head.

Inside, they find a shrine upon which is the box. Ranmaru X suddenly sees a memory not her own: Nobunaga ordering Ranmaru to take her head and escape. The other Ryouma enters the room. Ramnaru X demands he tell her why the Kinnou Party has the box. The other Ryouma realizes Ranmaru X is connected to Ramaru. Ranmaru X reveals the box contains Nobunaga’s head. The other Ryouma decides to kill the heroes for knowing too much.[4]

Ramnaru X demands to know how the Kinnou Party obtained the box when it belongs to her other self. The other Ryouma reveals Nobunaga’s head is the Noble Phantasm he stole from Ranmaru during the Grail War. Okuni is shocked that she never knew Ranmaru participated in the Grail War.. The other Ryouma reveals that is because Ranmaru was the first Servant he killed.[4]

He explains Nobunaga’s head is a Mystic Code of unbelievable power, having been lost to history. Nobunaga’s death was a critical turning point in Japan’s history, marking the end of the Warring States period and a new beginning. Therefore, when combined with the Grail Nobunaga’s head can be used to create countless impossible histories, so the Kinnou Party used it to create Singularity crossroads. Because of that, the Servants that were meant to disappear following the Grail War’s conclusion instead stayed.[4]

Ranmaru X demands the other Ryouma give back Nobunaga’s head, for it belongs to Ramaru who made it into his Noble Phantasm to keep it safe. He refuses it as the head is a crucial part of his plan. He then sics Oryou on the heroes, forcing them to fight again.[4]

The other Ryouma finds Ranmaru X is stronger than expected and wonders if she grew stronger because of Nobunaga’s head. Ranmaru X proclaims the Ranmanium furiously coursing through her body is telling she must take Nobunaga’’s head back no matter what. But the other Ryouma escapes with the head when a tremor shakes the whole building.[4]

The heroes chase him to the conference room where they find him, Takechi, and Takasugi. Takechi orders Shinbei to kill the heroes along with Takasugi, only for the manslayer to attack him instead, much to everyone’s surprise. Shinbei confused his own actions is enveloped in darkness.[4]

The Day You Died

The other Ryouma insists Shinbei attacked Takechi because he wanted revenge on the latter for framing him when he was alive. Shinbei denies he would ever do that and tries to attack the other Ryouma when the latter pulls out Nobunaga’s head. He realizes the head is responsible for what happened to him and becomes under its control again.[13]

Takasugi reveals he and the other Ryouma are secretly accomplices. The other Ryouma confirms they have been conspiring together since the beginning to Takechi’s shock and sics Shinbei on the heroes.[13]

Shinbei is defeated much to the other Ryouma’s disappointment. A shadowy figure suddenly appears behind him. Okuni realizes who the other Ryouma truly is, for which he mocks her for taking so long to figure it out.[13]

Chaldea’s Ryouma arrives and reveals the other Ryouma is a version who didn’t die at Oumiya Inn. He promises to explain more later and urges everyone to escape, but Takasugi has his Kiheitai surround them to keep them from escaping. The other Ryouma tries to kill Takechi, but Izou protects the latter. Ryouma urges the others to escape with Takechi when the other Ryouma orders Oryou to kill them.[13]

She attacks Izou and Ryouma and pins down the latter on the other Ryouma’s orders as he prepares to kill him with Ama-no-Sakahoko. Takasugi has his Kiheitai fire on Ritsuka. Fortunately, Ranmaru X deflects all the bullets.[13]

Seeing Ryouma about to be killed, Oryou remembers how she wasn’t there to protect him and regains her senses, shocking the other Ryouma she undid the Ama-no-Sakahoko’s binding . She takes the blow meant for Ryouma even though she knew being pierced by the spear meant she’d be cut off from the world itself, but she did it because she refused to let Ryouma die again. She then disappears seemingly forever, leaving Ryouma to cry for her.[13]

Ritsuka and Izou urge the grieving Ryouma to escape, but he can’t seem to hear them. The other Ryouma prepares to kill him when Shinbei gets up and attacks him, urging izou to escape with Takechi and Ryouma. With Izou carrying Ryouma and Zanzaboruou carrying Takechi, the heroes escape as Shinbei unleashes an attack to take the other Ryouma and Takasugi out with him.[13]

By My Friends' Side

Back at Chaldea, Da Vinci informs the others that the Oumiya Incident, the day Ryouma was assassinated, may be the Singularity’s inception point. For whatever reason, though, only Servants who died before the day of Ryouma’s death can enter the Singularity. Da Vinci thinks it’d be technically possible to force a rayshift to the Singularity if one of the Servants who went brought along a magical energy GPS that could be used to lock down the coordinates. However, there is no telling where those rayshifted could end up if the coordinates are even a little off, so it isn’t worth the risk.[1]

Suddenly a fire manifests where Nobunaga’s head should be. Okita takes it to mean something bad is happening in the Singularity and fears Ritsuka may be in danger. She urges for someone to go there with a magical energy GPS so the rest of them can follow. It seems no one can go when Himiko and Nagao Kagetora return from their trip.[1]

At the detective agency, Nagayoshi and Chacha get caught up on everything that had transpired. Nagayoshi wants to cut off Takechi’s head to avenge Oryou, which Takechi readily accepts, but the others refuse to let that happen.[1]

Moving on to the identity of the other Ryouma, Ryouma guesses he is a version of himself who never became a Counter Guardian. He himself made the contract to become a Counter Guardian before he died. But if he was summoned to the Grail War that occurred in the Singularity, it had to be a version of him from a world where he was recorded in the Throne of Heroes as a Heroic Spirit, not a Counter Guardian. Therefore, the Singularity is a world where he survived his assassination.

Takechi tells Ryouma he is nothing like his counterpart, remarking how the Ryouma he knew would never happily harm a woman. Ryouma questions how he ended up like that, wondering if he was always like that. Okuni reveals it is because the other Ryouma is possessed by the god she failed to track down and seal away when she was still alive: Ama-no-Sakagami.[1]

Okuni explains she was born in a village in Izumo. Its purpose had long been to raise shrine maidens who could pacify and seal away evil forces. However, the priests took to having orphaned girls kidnapped from all over Japan. They then raised these girls to be human sacrifices in the form of evil-sealing shrine maidens. They were used as much as possible and discarded once they were spent. Okuni was one of the girls who was  kidnapped and forced to become a shrine maiden.[1]

In her past, Okuni attacked a priest to protect a girl named Ohana when he was going to beat her for again failing to remain motionless during a prayer. She was severely beaten, a regular occurrence, and thrown into the training room with Ohana for transgression. She refused to believe it was the gods who forced them to be sealing maidens to ensure the country’s safety and told Ohana they should destroy the village one day and bring everyone to the world outside.[1]

Chacha is so enraged to hear children were harmed that she calls for the village to be razed to the ground. Okuni is touched by Chacha’s sympathy but reveals the village is already gone. Ohana was tricked by Sakagami into freeing him under the false promise it would free everyone in the village. But the moment he was free, Sakagami possessed Ohana and killed everyone in the village (except Okuni) , discarding her once he was done.[1]

Okuni explains Sakagami is an evil god descended from the ancient gods able to control people by taking their negative emotion no matter how small and amplifying them. Once he was freed, Sakagami moved from host to host, plunging the world into chaos and confusion for centuries. He is why Shinbei had suddenly attacked Takechi.

Confirming she pursued Sakagami back when she was alive, Okuni recounts how after the village was massacred some influential figures tried to erase all evidence of the village’s existence. She found that deplorable, so she stole one of their most powerful evil-destroying treasures and left Izumo. The treasure she stole was Zanzaburou, said to be a divine statue made from the husk of a god, though he was less impressive looking before her modifications.[1]

She had spent her lifetime travelling all over Japan, fighting evil and dancing for a living, but she never found Sakagami. Even after she became a Heroic Spirit, her desire to avenge her fellow shrine maidens and seal away Sakagami never changed. She now realizes the fact she was summoned to the Singularity meant Sakagami was here as well. Everyone agrees to help her fulfill her duty when they feel a sudden rumbling.[1]

Takasugi has martial law declared, requesting all the citizens return to their homes and remain there. Everyone human and Servant alike then feel their life force and magical energy being drained. Ryouma realizes SAITAMA is a giant reactor designed to collect magical energy. Takechi suspects Takasugi is initiating the plan he once dismissed as a pipe dream; the plan for humans to create their own god: the Kishin Project.[1]

Somewhere presumably in the Restoration Tower, Takasugi is pleased the plan is progressing well. He knew he was always fated to do great things and believes that is why he was fortunate enough to attain both a Grail and Nobunag’s head.[1]

Sakagami asks him how much longer until it works. Takasugi tells him he has all the reactors collecting as much magical energy as they can, but it will take at least half a day. The bizarre god will finally reveal itself then as long as nothing disrupts their plan. But then, as if Takasugi was expecting it, something of that nature arrives.[1]

Ryouma suspects all the magical energy is accumulating in the Restoration Center YAMATO in the central tower. Takechi says their goal is to take control of all six reactors, surmising Takasugi’s plan will fail if his supply is cut off. Everyone realizes they lack the numbers to both attack the reactors and the central tower, however. Fortunately, help arrives.[1]

Kishin Awakened

A Kiheitai reports to Takasugi that the enemy is attacking all six reactors at once; the enemy is the Shinsengumi, Kagetora, Nobukatsu, Himiko, Okita Alter, Shuwen, and Mash. Sakagami is displeased that the attack will disrupt the magical energy supply, telling Takasugi this isn’t what they agreed on. Takasugi decides to do something he didn’t want to resort to. [7]

With their allies attacking the reactors, Ritsuka, Ryouma, Izou, and Takechi head for Restoration Tower, hurrying when they feel the magical energy drain increase to fatal levels. They soon confront Takasugi and Sakagami inside. Takasugi tells Sakagami to keep them occupied while he starts the activation phase.[7]

Sakagami pierces Ryouma with Ama-no-Sakahoko but finds he cannot remove it. Ryouma deduces the spear is the other Ryouma’s Noble Phantasm instead of Oryou, but that also means it is his as well. He steals it, hoping to use its power to eliminate both himself and Sakagami.[7]

But suddenly he hears the presumed voice of the heavenly spear speak to him. It recallss how Ryouma rejected it and is shocked he freed Oryou simply out of pity. It tries to tempt to take possession of the spear, saying he will become a god. But to its shock, Ryouma breaks the spear, having known it was Sakagami trying to trick him and not wanting anything to do with the spear that impaled Oryou. As a result of Ryouma’s actions, Sakagami has lost his host body, but Ryouma has perished.[7]

Takasugi reveals, however, he built Sakagami a new body to replace the one he lost during the Age of Gods for that was the purpose of the Kishin Project. Sakagami takes possession of his new body but Takasugi, having expected the former would betray him at this point, reveals he designed it to steal Sakagami’s divine power for himself: Kishin Arahabaki.[7]

Dear Dragon, Race across the Waves of Wadatsumi

After Arahabaki emerges, Takasugi confesses everything he has done, including the construction of SAITAMA has led to Arahabaki’s completion. By incorporating a Grail, Nobunaga’s head, and Sakagami, he has created a man-made god capable of rewriting Singularities. He built Arahabaki under the pretense it was a replacement body for Sakagami but it was never meant for him. He then has Arahabaki absorb Sakagami to the latter’s horror.[6]

He reveals his plan is to initiate a true restoration by having Arahabaki serve as Japan’s eternal ruler, noting history has been proven humans are not up to task. He argues with Takechi that a human ruler would only continue the cycle of history, so he believes people need a ruler whose power is closer to a god than a human in order to keep them in check. But with all that said, Takasugi claims what he really wants is for things to be interesting and decides to test Arahabaki’s power on the heroes.[6]

The Great Bounded Field Sealing Circle

The Great Bounded Field Sealing Circle

But then from atop her Bounded Field stage above the city, Okuni announces she will seal Arahabaki away forever using the sealing shrine maidens’ legendary seal passed down from the Age of Gods: the Great Bounded Field Sealing Circle. Takasugi argues a single Servant cannot make a Bounded Field strong enough to seal away Arahabaki. Okuni knows that which is why she is having the Servants from Chaldea assisting her.[6]

Takasugi commands Arahabaki to shoot her down when he notices something wrong with its magical energy. Okuni reveals she and the others hijacked the reactors and thanks to Himiko’s power, she can channel all the magical energy they collected straight into her stage. It is why she was able to create the biggest sealing Bounded Field circle the world has ever seen.

Though mildly surprised this was all Ryouma’s plan, Takasugi asserts the Grail and Nobunaga’s head are powerful enough to keep Arahabaki running. But then Ranmaru X, Nagaysohi, and Chacha fly in and remove Nobunaga’s head from the man-made god. The heroes then proceed to fight it.[6]

Takasugi is enjoying himself despite the fact the heroes are about to destroy Arahabaki. But his fun ends when he suddenly coughs up blood, revealing even as a Heroic Spirit he suffers from the same disease that killed him in life. He admits defeat when he is suddenly mortally wounded by Sakagami, who escaped from Arahabaki thanks to all the damage it suffered. He takes full possession of Arahabaki and proclaims his second coming when a light shines from Ama-no-Sakahoko and a familiar voice is heard.[6]

After he had perished, Ryouma found himself in the ocean's abyss before a sleeping Oryou. A voice revealed the Oryou who was his companion was a copy of this one and told him Ama-no-Sakahoko was cast down from the heavens to prevent her from becoming a devourer of nations. Ryouma realized Oryou had been sleeping here ever since the day he died. The voice told him to use Ama-no-Sakahoko to destroy Oryou for good, but Ryouma decided he would stay with Oryou until faded away.[6]

Seeing the love Ryouma and Oryou feel for one another and considering the fact Ryouma abandoned his chance at godhood, the voice revealed the true purpose of Ama-no-Sakahoko was to welcome Oryou back to the heavens as a god; It is a symbol of the voice’s regret for branding her a monster years ago. The voice then used the spear to make Oryou into Ryouma’s guardian, declaring her new divine name to be White Orochi of Takachiho.[6]

Oryou woke up overjoyed to see Ryouma again and thanked him for all he had done for her. Ryouma and Oryou tell each other that they’re glad they met and gain new Spirit Origins. The two then left the abyss with the voice telling Ryouma to take good care of their daughter for them.[6]

Ryouma and Oryou destroy Arahabaki, forcing Sakagami to seek a new vessel, and he chooses Takechi. Unfortunately for him, Takechi had carved a seal with Okuni’s help to seal the evil god in his body. He knew Sakagami would choose him, considering himself the weakest mentally out of everyone present. He then commits seppuku, killing the evil god at long last.[6]

Dying, Takechi tells Izou his sword was always meant to protect people and apologizes for turning it into something murderous. He implores him to use it to protect people like it was meant to. Ryouma promises him he will do everything he can to help Japan and Ritsuka. Takechi disappears, relieved he can now die without regrets.[6]

Takasugi tells Ryouma to leave the Singularity, for it will not last much longer. He will not last much longer finding it unbelievable his disease has cut his life short even as a Servant. He gives the heroes the Grail and tells them to go, preferring to die alone. Joined by the others, the heroes leave the Singularity.[6]

But to Takasugi’s surprise, Okuni didn’t go with them. She tells him their contract is in effect and asserts this is the only chance to have him play the shamisen for her while she dances. Intrigued, Takasugi plays a song on his shamisen while Okuni dances before he passes on.[6]

Mysterious Ranmaru X

Ranmaru thanks Ranmaru X for protecting Nobunaga's head in his stead. But he is shocked to realize that she isn't a descendant of his nor a future version who became a Servant. Ranmaru X confirms she is a Servant but she gained the title of Mysterious Ranmaru X by winning the Ranmaru Battle, a competition held on Planet Ranmaru to determine the strongest Ranmaru of them all. Ranmaru is only further confused and questions why his prayers reached someone so ridiculous when he assumes it is all the fault of the unique ability of Nobunaga's head.[9]

Later everyone goes on the deck of the Storm Border to see Ranmaru X off before she returns to her home planet. Nobunaga thanks her for returning her head. However, Ranmaru X wants Ritsuka to come with her, but Okita and Mash absolutely refuse to let that happen. Meanwhile in the cafeteria, Izou and Ryouma drink to Takasugi, Shinbei, and Takechi.[9]

Part 2

Unfortunately, Nobunaga's head goes missing again. Related to that, Okuni arrives and brings Ritsuka's party to Takasugi's office. There they meet an interactive hologram. Okuni reveals that following Takasugi's death, the Singularity was somehow left in a state of collapse. She tried searching Takasugi's office for answers when the hologram appeared. Holo-Takasugi explains it was created as a countermeasure if Sakagami were to possess Takasugi. It also reveals Takasugi had built Arahabaki Mk. II to counter Arahabaki, though that backup plan was ruined since Ritsuka's party destroyed the man-made god. Arahabaki Mk. II was supposed to disappear with the Singularity, but for whatever reason, Nobunaga's head appeared in the machine and now acts as its core. But, with its original directive gone, it is now running amok. If left unchecked, it will exceed its critical point and branch out into countless Singularities, becoming a threat to the Proper History. Fortunately, though, It can be defeated in the same matter the original Arahabaki was. But the magical reactors have also summoned Servants to guard them.[14]

Ritsuka's party defeat the Servants guarding the reactor: Izou[15], Himiko[16], Kagetora[17], Li Shuwen, Okita Alter[18], the Shinsengumi with Medusa's help[19], and Nobukatsu with Okita's help.[20] Afterward, they destroy Arahabaki Mk. II, finally putting an end to the Singularity. It is later revealed that Arahabaki had a program to pseudo-reproduce Nobunaga's head to serve as its core. But since they cannot exist simultaneously, the head of Chaldea's Nobunaga also disappeared. Meanwhile, Okuni decides to travel the world instead of joining Chaldea.[21]
