BodhisattvaWP (菩薩, Bosatsu?) refers to a type of Divine Spirit in BuddhismWP.

Characteristics

, a Bodhisattva.

Buddha, a Bodhisattva.

Bodhisattvas are DevaWP who devote their lives to bringing salvation to SattvaWP (living beings).[1][2] In fact, saving people is a core part of Buddhist teachings. Due to this, all budding Bodhisattvas strive to fullfill the following vowsWP:[2]

  • Shujou-muhen-seigando (衆生無辺誓願度(しゅじょうむへんせいがんど)?): The vow to save all living things.[2]
  • Houmon-mujin-seigangaku (法門無尽誓願学(ほうもんむじんせいがんがく)?): The vow to learn as many things as possible.[2]
  • Bon'nou-muryou-seigandan (煩悩無量誓願断(ぼんのうむりょうせいがんだん)?): The vow to relinquish all one's earthly desires.[2]

Bodhisattvas are gods of universal scale and power who can easily manage things on the scale of the Solar System.[1] Buddhist entities taking material form has no precedent as far as the Clock Tower knows, with Leonardo da Vinci thinking they only ever interacted through separate incarnations or possessing someone's body.[3]

The Vajra is a weapon Buddhist Gods also possessed.[4]

Enlightenment

EnlightenmentWP ((さと)り, Satori?) is the awakened state someone reaches when they attain NirvanaWP (涅槃, Nehan?) (become a Buddha).[5]

People wishing to attain enlightenment must follow the Five preceptsWP:[6]

  • Fusesshoukai: Do not kill.[6]
  • Fumougokai: Do not lie.[6]
  • Fuonjukai: Do not consume intoxicants.[6]
  • Fuchutokai: Do not steal.[7]
  • Fujainkai: Do not engage in sexual relationships outside of marriage.[8]

It is also possible to reach enlightenment (大悟, Taigo?) through ZenWP meditation. For example, Yagyuu Munenori's Suigetsu and Miyamoto Musashi's Void replicate that clear state of mind, allowing them to achieve incredible feats such as cutting Karma itself.[9][10][11] Another way to attain Buddhahood is through mastery of poetry.[3]

Buddha

See also Buddha (disambiguation).

In Buddhism, Bodhisattvas who have attained Enlightenment and MokshaWP (liberation/release) are known as Buddhas (仏, Hotoke?).[12][1] The Buddhist religion is based on the teachings of the Buddha (覚者(ブッダ), Kakusha(Budda)?, lit. "The Enlightened One") Shakyamuni on how to attain BuddhahoodWP. While still alive, Shakyamuni was liberated from suffering. However, Buddhism does not offer a simple decree such as, "If you study this, you will be saved". Instead, Buddhism is based on the principles that Shakyamuni followed to reach enlightenment, and he never proclaimed that his teachings were the sole path to attain Buddhahood. The path to enlightenment, after all, varies from person to person. From a Buddhist perspective, the potential to become a Buddha is inherent in everyone. Every human will eventually attain enlightenment, regardless of whether they are good or evil, kind or heartless; all are subject to this transformative process of becoming a Buddha.[12]

On the other hand, the most skilled Japanese martial artists have reached a level where they rival or even surpass the Buddhas. For example, Houzouin Inshun's skill as a spearman is stated to be on the same realm as the gods and them.[13][14] It is said that a direct blow from his Noble Phantasm Hazy Inverted Moon - Eleven Forms would be enough to strike one down.[14] On the other hand, Yagyuu Munenori claims to have surpassed even the Buddhas by ascending to true supremacy, the realm of EmpireoWP.[14] Similarly, Musashi's Ishana Daitenshou and Sasaki Kojirou's Tsubame Gaeshi bring about unavoidable strikes that not even the Buddhas could evade.[15]

Xuanzang Sanzang claims that the Buddha exist beyond space and time. As such, they can send messengers from the future to the past.[16] Furthermore, the vastness of the world view of Buddhism is much greater than other religions, encompassing the universe as the kingdom of the Buddha. It uses numerical concepts like NayutaWP (10^60) and MuryoutaisuuWP (10^68) to display their magnitude, and the size of the universe is the great trichiliocosmWP, composed of one thousand medium trichiliocosm, which are composed of one thousand galaxies, small trichiliocosm each made up of three thousand worlds. It is on the scale of galaxies, galaxy clusters, and superclusters known in the modern era, interpreted over two thousand years ago.[1] However, Kiara Sessyoin claims that the Outer Universe exists beyond the Buddha's reach.[17]

Buddhism has the belief that women cannot become Buddhas no matter how devout their practices. But Amitabha Buddha took pity on them, making a provision in his vows for them to reincarnate as men. The story being that by receiving that, even a woman may become a Buddha. The word “Buddha” can't actually be explained in a few words, but to put it simply, it can be compared to being “enlightened” or a “saint”.[18]

Demonic Bodhisattva

Demonic Bodhisattvas (有頂天魔性菩薩, Uchōten Mashōbosatsu?), also known as Tenma, are people who have become enemies of Buddha. The horns on their heads, known as Mara, signify that.[19][20] Kiara Sessyoin implies that her nature as such a being is related to her twisted interpretation of the fourth vow: "Seek Enlightenment." Her desire to save others by offering her body keeps her away from achieving enlightenment.[2]

All the World's Desire [Noble Phantasm]
    Angra Mainyu/CCC.
This is the anti-planetary Noble Phantasm Kiara gains after her reincarnation.
Angra Mainyu is the most self-serving heinous Noble Phantasm of them all where Kiara uses the world to masturbate.
Kiara offers her body in a sexual manner to all living things on Earth, including humans, animals, and plants. By completely accepting all people as is she gains the greatest possible mastery over their senses and carnality.
This Noble Phantasm is derided for being demonic and it’s similar to the living sacrifices used for certain artificial magic ceremonies used the past in order to prove the evil of humans.
It is a vortex of pleasure that melts all sentient beings, and digests their “life” in an instant. While in reality it all happens in an instant, but it feels like an eternity of pleasure.
Regardless of how different the structure of a beings intelligence may be, this vortex affects all without exception. It is not a Noble Phantasm that is limited to affect only those on Earth.
The damage increases if certain conditions are met.
If the target is of the opposite sex, the damage increases.
The more intelligent a being is, the more damage it does.
As far as the setting and lore are concerned, the Servant who would be hit with the least damage would be Archer, and Gilgamesh would be damaged the most.
The reason why this attack’s power, visuals, and scale are so huge is because reincarnated Kiara is a being similar to Saver.
People who devote their life to bringing salvation to Sattvas (living things) are referred to as Bodhisattvas. People who have attained moksha (libertation/release) and become Buddhas are also Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva is a god of universe scale and power, and can easily manage things on the scale of the Solar System.
Buddhism has a sense of scale of the universe that stands out from that of other religions. There are concepts like Nayuta (1060) and “The Infinitely Vast Number” (1068) which were created to represent the scale and size of a Buddha.
The entire universe is the domain of a Buddha. In Buddhism the universe in considered to be made up of three billion solar systems (a great trichiliocosm). A galaxy comprises of 3000 solar systems (a small trichiliocosm), and 1000 small trichiliocosms make up a trichiliocosm.
This actually aligns with the real scale of galaxies, galaxy clusters, and super clusters.
India had this stuff figured out over 2000 years ago? Holy crap!
In the initial design phase of the game I submitted some paperwork describing this Noble Phantasm. I thought there would be no way that this gets by CERO untouched, but surprisingly enough it did.
I still have no idea how this was able to make it past them.

  4. [v] Fate/stay night - Weapon Menu: Vajra [T]

    Vajra
    ???
One of the core divine symbols of Indra, the god of thunder in ancient Indian mythology.

Indra was a phenomenon initially spread to India by the Aryans, and Vajra is also officially known as Srivijava.

As Buddhism grew in influence, Indra's name became Śakra or Taishakuten, and his divine symbol's name changed as well.

Vajra is a Noble Phantasm that can only be loosed once, dealing damage equivalent to B+ rank. It is a convenient weapon that inflicts a set amount of damage regardless of the user's magical energy. "Vajra" refers to the diamond pestle carried by Buddhist gods.

  5. [v] Fate/EXTRA material - Encyclopedia: Transmigration into One [Noble Phantasm Name], p.156 [T]

Transmigration into One [Noble Phantasm Name]
    Amita Amitabha.
It is Saver’s major Noble Phantasm.
It is the final and greatest stage of his minor Noble Phantasm, Chakravartin: Turner of the Wheel.
According to the reincarnation ideology centered on the Hindu God of Creation Brahma, all humans are a reincarnation of Brahma, and thus the entire human race is part of the same individual. (The Hindu reincarnation and transmigration timeline is sometimes ignored in our (Type-Moon) works, so don’t be silly and nitpick.)
According to this ideology, all humans will certainly attain nirvana. (become a Buddha)
This is because all humans will ultimately attain enlightenment and transmigrate.
…Uhhh—Well I have no idea what I’m saying anymore, all this transmigration and immortality business isn’t easy you know! Wow! So anyways… (Remainder omitted)
To cut a long story short Amita Amitabha saves mankind from all its pain and suffering. “Everyone will become one with me through the reincarnation cycle.”
No mortal being, no human can ever go against this process. (Spoiler ahead) However, the protagonist isn’t alive in the first place, so there remains a tiny chance for him/her to survive this attack. This is because the protagonist has never experienced the pain of living, or the four kinds of suffering (birth, disease, old age, death).
If the production budget of EXTRA were 10 times larger, we would have included a system where the player would have attained enlightenment through playing the game and thus be able to overcome this attack. [TL NOTE: attain enlightenment = become a Buddha=be able to survive the attack]
When fighting against Saver we wanted to evoke the feeling that if players don’t win the battle in one turn, this “inescapable game-over attack” would activate.
By the way, in the game the actual damage is 5,670,000,000.

    [v] Fate/EXTRA material - Encyclopedia: Saver [Servant name], p.191

    Saver [Servant name]
    Buddha. A messiah type servant.
Being a Buddha means that one has attained enlightenment.
The Master who summons this servant, regardless if they are good or evil, must have awakened a strong desire to “save mankind.”
The most famous Buddha, Shaka, achieved enlightenment on his own. While still alive he was liberated from so-called “suffering.” His “teachings to attain Buddhahood” are what makes up Buddhism.
However, in Buddhism there is nothing that says, “If you study this you will be saved.”
Buddhism is the collection of principles that Shaka followed to reach enlightenment, and Shaka never proclaimed that his teachings were the only path to attain Buddhahood. The path to enlightenment varies from person to person.
As far as Buddhism is concerned, the potential to become a Buddha is present within everyone. Every human will eventually attain enlightenment. Of course this includes those who are good as well as those who are evil, those who are kind and those who are heartless; everyone is subject to the process of becoming a Buddha.
The reason that Saver answers the summons to become a servant is that its Master’s suffering is too great and cannot be ignored, and also burdened with sins that are too great.
“There is no way for this soul to be saved.
Well then at least until he has realized the result he desires for the human race,
    I will walk alongside him.”
Saver has no desire to lend his powers to the Master, he only cooperates out of mercy and benevolence he feels for the King of Conflict.
…For this person who has been constantly embroiled in battle from birth and till death. Savior will become a shield for the final chapter of this poor soul who despite resenting war, was unable to deny it, and forced to walk a pain-filled path. Like the flowers of a saul tree.

  20. [v] Fate/EXTRA material - Encyclopedia: Demonic Bodhisattva [concept], p.209-210 [T]

    Demonic Bodhisattva [concept]
    Mashou Bosatsu.
This term is the widely-known nickname of a certain somebody.
The horns jutting from her head are devil horns.
This shows that she is the enemy of the enlightened (buddhas).
She is the embodiment of self-love, and prioritizes pleasure over everything else.
Her pleasure is achieved by using human lives and treating them as sustenance. She is a walking disaster for man and beast alike.
Those who met this woman were touched by her great kindness and would devotedly follow her as though she has cast a spell upon them.
After that, due to her great desire to be loved, she would (foolishly) use them to indulge in her sexual desires. The problem is that the more you fulfill your sexual desires, the less satisfying it becomes to do so.
This woman has no desire for dilute, unsatisfying “pleasure.”
Her followers would fall into despair because she no longer showed any concern for them, “She won’t love us ever again.” and thus they end their lives. In the end, the victims had their bodies and everything they had completely devoured by her.
She is certainly guilty, but since all her followers who committed suicide were thankful to her, she was unable to be charged and prosecuted.
It goes without saying, her followers were simply mistakenly appreciative of her, or were deceived.
Her followers were vaguely aware of the fact that she was not a saint, but actually a devil, but they were unable to escape from her devilish grasp, and found their lives degenerating.
A similar situation is also true for Kirei Kotomine, although he takes things in a somewhat different direction.
Kotomine recognized himself as evil, and decided that evil was appropriate for him, thus he strayed from the path of human morals.
This woman (a Demonic Bodhisattva) considers all her actions, regardless of what, to be good. Quite the haughty evil spirit.
This evil spirit of a woman lies to herself about nothing, but soaks her words with lies to entrap everyone around her as food; their lives expended completely for her own sake.
The absoluteness of her ego, her unwavering attitude towards everything; to a regular person it might seem as though she is on the border of enlightenment. If there were a specific reason that her followers called her a “saint,” it would be because at this characteristic.

The appearance she takes on after her demonic reincarnation is one of the highlights in CCC (and also a bit far out).
Its formal name is The Third Pleasure Heaven of Deeply Grateful Existence [
She is a new god descended from the Covetous Mother Goddess.
Only Saver, who has by all rights mastered the esoteric ability to completely turn off his sexual desire, is able to match up to this woman incarnate.
Rather than using the mysterious effects that are privilege only to God’s to attack, her primary method of attacking is using her hands. This is because according to her directly touching her opponent and having her opponent touch her is more pleasurable.
Having been designed at the same time as the Fate/EXTRA boss characters, she was made to be completely opposite of the others.
“Fate always has the most amazing boss characters. We want to make sure things stay that way in EXTRA as well.”
Said Mr. Niifu in a presentation, “In that case, why don’t we make her name a cross between the names of the main villains of Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/stay night? And that’s how she got her name.
As for myself, at that time I had just cleared Bayonetta, which is why CCC features such a high tension scenario. I bared my desire for all to see, “Well see, I really want to write a slutty bitch into the story. A super erotic bitch to end them all, a new genre God Bitch?”
So I went to Takeshi Takeuchi with a variety of nonsensical requests such as,
“Please make the last boss costume naked-apron (Hadaka Apron).”

    Fate/EXTRA
