Automata (自動人形(オートマタ), Jidō Ningyō?) are Puppets that work autonomously.

History

Characteristics

After the 17th century, the field of Human Imitation that produced Puppets capable of resisting magus fights entered a decline.[1] As knowledge of the human body deepened and spread throughout humanity, from the point humanity accepted that there were no Mysteries to be found within their own bodies, it had lost the grounds to be a field of magecraft. Automata capable of fighting independently has become a lost art.[2]

Since it is difficult nowadays to manufacture powerful automatic dolls that can withstand magical battles, modern Puppeteers generally collect and use dolls manufactured before the 17th century. But in terms of performance, it is more cost-effective to train a low level familiar, than to build or to buy an automatic doll.[1]

Examples include Touko Aozaki, who single-handily resurrected the field.[2] There is the French dolls-type that the Master of Assassin in the Third Holy Grail War mentioned in Fate/hollow ataraxia used, which were equipped with deadly weapons for precision killing.[3] Other examples are the Automata from the Seventh Labyrinth of Caubac Alcatraz or the karakuri doll manufactured by the magus Kashin Koji.
