| It is said that one who ate the flesh of a mermaid shall be immortal. In Japan, the mermaid lacks the intelligence to comprehend human speech, giving the impression that they are merely "a fish that looks like a person". In other words, they have no soul. Eating a soulless fish does not count as killing, so it does not break her vow not to harm others. ―Even if she were to, say, eat an amount of mermaids equivalent to a school of them.
As a side note, a certain children's author wrote in one of his works that mermaids are of equal intelligence to humans, lacking only a soul. |
