Meeting Mentor
Someone speaks about how they are undying fury and hatred. They are Kagekiyo.[1]
Fergus mac Róichand Julius Caesar are looking after Murasaki Shikibu’s library for her while she is gone. Fergus is bored, admitting he was never that into books, though he did learn to read Latin. It was the one of the hardest things he had done in his life, especially considering his teacher Scáthach thought his time would be better spent learning new combat techniques and then threw a spear at his head from three hills away.[1]
Even now, as a Heroic Spirit, Fergus still fears Scáthach. Caesar tells Fergus he is not alone, for his mother taught him a great deal and doubts he could say no to her even now. But he then realizes he shouldn’t equate his mother with Scáthach and suspects she’d take it as a compliment. A voice takes note of the fact Fergus and Caesar both have teachers, though they shouldn’t be surprised teachers would occasionally be discussed in a place heroes gather.[1]
While their voice can be heard, this unknown person’s presence cannot be sensed, so Caesar wonders if they’re an Assassin with Presence Concealment or they possess an equivalent ability with no ties to any particular class. Fergus recognizes the voice as a woman’s and states he never forgets a woman’s voice even if he only heard it once. He demands that she show herself.
The voice insists she didn’t come here to fight and only wants to talk. Fergus demands they talk about what she is doing in Chaldea. The source of the voice shows herself confessing she has come to punish her student.[1]
In the command room, Ushiwakamaru finishes telling a joke to Ritsuka, Mash, Murasaki, Jason, Musashibou Benkei, and Scáthach, with the punchline that she decapitates someone. Only Scáthach laughs at her Genji joke.[1]
Murasaki recalls the Genji warriors she knew had no end of brave tales to tell and admires that Ushiwakamaru seems to be continuing that tradition. Ushiwakamaru thanks her for the compliment, though she feels with the threats Ritsuka faces growing deadlier by the day she needs to be more diligent with her training than her. She may be a Heroic Spirit, but she still needs to train and get stronger.[1]
Scáthach commends Ushiwakamaru for wishing to become stronger. Ushiwakamaru asks Scáthach to train her to the concerns of Benkei and Jason. Jason implores Ritsuka to stop them, certain they will kill each other. Ritsuka agrees and tells Scáthach and Ushiwakamru to keep to the simulator.[1]
An alarm suddenly goes off. Mash reports there is a powerful magical energy signal in the library and is heading for the command room. Murasaki is worried about Fergus and Caesar, who are currently in the library filling in for her while she is in the command room. Given how fast the signal is making its way to the command room, Scáthach thinks it’s safe to assume Fergus and Caesar were defeated, but reassures neither have vanished. Still, she finds it odd the intruders defeated those two so easily and concludes to herself the only possibility is that the intruder is a woman.[1]
The aforementioned intruder enters the room, kicking the door open. She is pleased to see the rumors about Chaldea about being where great heroes from across time and all the world are true, commenting that Fergus and Caesar weren’t half bad. She introduces herself as one of the greatest swordfighters and strategists of all time, as well as one of Kyo’s most famous onmyouji: Kiichi Hougen.[1]
Mash explains Kiichi is a legendary onmyouji from the tail end of Japan’s Heian period and the found of the Kyouhachiryu swordfighting style. Benkei adds she is also the custodian of the Rikutou and Sanryaku, two of the greatest treatises on military strategy ever written. She is from the same era as him and Ushiwakamaru. Many legends also say Kiichi was Ushiwakamaru’s mentor; Ushimakamaru greets her mentor.[1]
Murasaki says legends pertaining to Kiichi were after her time, but she has studied some since she has materialized, so she knows Kiichi is famed as one of the greatest teachers of all time. But even though she is a legendary onmyouji and sword saint, Kiichi’s true identity is ——. Scáthach warns everyone to be on guard, for Kiichi is practically a god.
Considering Kiichi’s actions thus far, Scáthach thinks their only option regarding her is to fight her. Kiichi is pleased to see she and Scáthach have much in common. Fergus and Caesar were too busy flirting with her to really put a fight, so she wonders how those in the command room will fare.[1]
Kiichi’s magical energy spikes all of the sudden. Ushimakamaru attacks her, but Kiichi easily counters her. Ushiwakmaru tells her that although she will never forget the debt she owes her, she will show her no mercy if she means to threaten Chaldea. Kiichi becomes infuriated with her student’s words, forcing the Chaldeans to fight her.[1]
Impressed that the Chaldeans held their ground against her, Kiichi calms down. She reveals she came to Chaldea not to start a fight but end one instead. She tells the Chaldeans to ask Ushiwakamaru what she means. Ritsuka asks Ushiwakamaru if she knows what Kiichi is talking about, but Ushiwakamaru only mumbles.[1]
Benkei reveals while training under Kiichi under the name Shana-oh, Ushiwakmaru made off with her Kiichi’s ultimate strategies. She had tricked Kiichi’s daughter into bringing them out before she read the contents of a treasure said to grant godly power to those who absorb its contents without permission.[1]
Kiichi recounts how she was shocked to see what the human world had become in the 21st century when she first materialized, but then she sensed Ushiwakamaru’s presence. She never had a chance to punish her back when she was alive since she died as Yoshitsune in Oushu and it would’ve been too much trouble to track her down in the afterlife. But now that they’ve both materialized, she declares it is time for Ushiwakamaru to pay for her past misdeeds and tells her to wait while she prepares her punishment.[1]
Everyone present except Ritsuka agrees Ushiwakamaru deserves her punishment. As a teacher with her own foolish student, Scáthach in particular sympathizes with Kiichi, but she permits Ushiwakamaru to say something on her own behalf. Ushiwakamaru tries to get out of her punishment by claiming she knows nothing about her life after she became Shana-oh and even less about her life as Yoshitsune. Kiichi isn’t hearing any of it, though.[1]
She takes a mallet out of her pocket. Mash and Benkei both recognize it as the Mallet of Misfortune, one of Japan’s own omnipotent wish granters. Kiichi taps Ushiwakamaru with the Mallet twice, turning her into Shana-oh then Yoshitsune. Ushiwakmaru screams as if in pain, but Kiichi assumes she is just hamming it up like always. Scáthach, however, insists there is something truly wrong with Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Core.[1]
Ushiwakamaru’s magical energy spikes rapidly. Kiichi realizes something is indeed wrong with Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Core, which confuses her as she didn’t even touch her Spirit Core.[1]
All the sudden Ushiwakamaru attacks Ritsuka, but Benkei protects them. She then steals the Mallet from Kiichi under the pretense of a hug and runs away. The heroes chase after her.[1]
Ushiwakamaru runs into Cú Chulainn Alter and taps him with the Mallet, commenting that he is the third one, before heading on her way. Medb checks what is happening when she sees what has happened to Cú Chulainn Alter.[1]
The heroes arrive, but Medb is shocked to see what has happened to Cú Chulainn Alter has happened to Jason and Benkei: they have all shrunk. Benkei is confused about when it happened and how he didn’t notice sooner. Scáthach surmises Ushiwakamaru used the Mallet on them. Ushiwakamaru isn’t in Chaldea anymore, having used the Mallet to escape. Leonardo da Vinci calls from the command room and informs the heroes a micro Singularity has manifested and asks if they have any idea what caused it.[1]
Returning to the command room, Kiichi explains what happened to Da Vinci and offers to help resolve this situation. Da Vinci suspects Ushiwakamaru used the Mallet to create the Singularity.[1]
Ritsuka vows to return everyone, including Ushiwakamaru, back to normal. Kiichi decides she will go with them. Scáthach tells Ritsuka to take Kiichi up on her offer. She herself cannot help them as she has other business to attend to, but she is certain Kiichi will be a powerful ally. Mash says she will back up Ritsuka from Chaldea.[1]
To France?
(1/2)
Ushiwakamaru taps someone with the Mallet as she laughs manically.[2]
The heroes arrive in the Singularity. Kiichi isn’t sure where they are, but she knows it isn’t Japan. Mash says she is looking into it right now, but it’s taking longer than usual to ascertain the coordinates.[2]
After slaying some wyverns, Cú Chulainn Alter suddenly takes a bite of one. Through tasting it, he ascertains the wyverns are from France. Kiichi questions why Ushiwakamaru would go there instead of her home in Japan. Mash confirms the heroes are indeed in France.[2]
Jason questions how they’re supposed to find Ushiwakamaru when they don’t even have a single lead. Mash reports she is detecting Servants up ahead, but something seems to be off with their Spirit Origins. The heroes go to investigate.[2]
(2/2)
At a castle, someone is elated that their wish has finally come true. They say they’ll have to thank Ushiwakamaru for it later, though she seemed different from usual.[3]
Jeanne d’Arc Alter runs toward Ritsuka excitedly, calling them “Reindeer”. She reveals she is actually Jeanne Alter Santa Lily all grown up. Mash confirms her Spirit Origin is the irregular Spirit Origin that was detected earlier and that she is indeed Alter Lily grown up.
Medb asks Alter Lily if she remembers how she got this way. Alter Lily says Ushiwakamaru tapped her with a funny-looking mallet. Kiichi thought as much and concludes the Mallet made Alter Lily into an adult. Alter Lily recalls Ushiwakamaru looked a little different from usual and that she also said “Don’t worry about it.I got it from someone else.” She wonders what she meant by that.[3]
A very angry Jeanne Alter arrives, looking like Alter Lily. Ushiwakamaru tapped her with the Mallet and next thing she knew, she had been turned into Alter Lily. Then, when looking for a way to fix it, she heard there was another grown-up version of her, expect she is not her. The whole situation confuses her. She also wants to know why Alter Lily is wearing her swimsuit.[3]
Kiichi asks Ritsuka what the story behind Jeanne Alter and Alter Lily is. Ritsuka tells her they’re basically the same person except not. Kiichi surmises Ushiwakamaru used the Mallet to give back what she took with it.[3]
Alter Lily admits she was wearing Jeanne Alter’s armor at first, but she had to take it off because it was too hard to breathe in. She had no choice but to change into the swimsuit. She advises Jeanne Alter to take better care of herself and insinuates she can’t fit into her armor because she gained weight from eating too much. Jeanne Alter becomes enraged at Alter Lily calling her fat and demands she give her body back right now.[3]
The two of them get ready to fight. Jason thinks they should just let them fight it out if they want, but Kiichi says they can’t as long as the Mallet is involved. The heroes thus force Jeanne Alter and Alter Lily to calm down.[3]
After the Jeanne Alters are defeated, Kiichi uses her powers to return them to their original bodies. Jeanne Alter changes back into her armor and shows it fits her perfectly, which baffles Alter Lily as it didn’t fit her when she was grown up. Kiichi suspects that is because the Mallet made her grow too much. She explains turning someone into a child requires taking away their growth and vice versa for turning someone into an adult. If done incorrectly, though, the growth will be disproportionate.
Seeing she was able to fix the Jeanne Alters, Jason asks Kiichi why she hasn’t fixed him, Benkei, and Cú Chulainn Alter already. Kiichi says she could, but she can’t because the Mallet still has what it stole from Jason, Benkei, and Cú Chulainn Alter.[3]
Kiichi asks Alter Lily where Ushiwakamaru is. Alter Lily answers she isn’t sure as Ushiwakmaru left while she was still excited about being suddenly grown up. But she recalls she had said something about throwing something away before she left.[3]
Cú Chulainn Alter senses something and immediately attacks it, but it repels his attack. It surprisingly turns out to be a shrunken Ushiwakamaru. She is surprised to be the fourth to have been shrunken and asks what is going on, something the others want her to tell them.[3]
After Ritsuka catches her up with all that happened, Ushiwakamaru confesses she doesn’t remember clearly what happened. The last thing she can remember is being discarded and another her looking down on her with pure disgust.[3]
Medb asks Ushiwakamaru if she can sense where her other self seeing as that they’re both the same person. Kiichi suspects the Mallet might have split Ushiwakamaru had split into two, so, agreeing with Medb’s idea, she gives Ushiwakamaru a small black needle. She says it is essentially a dowsing rod and instructs Ushiwakamaru to empty her mind and pour magical energy into the needle. [3]
Ushiwakamaru follows her mentor’s instructions and locates which way her other self went. She immediately wants to go after her, but Kiichi stops her and reprimands her for always acting without thinking first. Ushiwakamaru, however, points out none of this would have happened if Kiichi didn’t bring the Mallet. Kiichi quickly changes the subject to going after Evil Ushiwakamaru.[3]
At her request, Ritsuka allows Ushiwakamaru to ride on their shoulder. After the Jeanne Alters leave, the heroes set out.[3]
Kiichi is surprised by how comfortable Ushiwakamaru is around Ritsuka. She remembers when she was a still young Genji warrior harboring a deep grudge thanks to her late father and distant mother and how obsessed she was with vengeance on Kiyomori and the entire Taira clan. Now she is smiling like she hasn’t a care in the world, which reminds Kiichi of the time she told her about Yoritomo.[3]
To Slovakia?
(1/2)
Back when she trained under Kiichi, Ushiwakamaru would come to her mentor’s home every day, vowing to keep doing until she learned everything she can from her. Kiichi was annoyed by her daily visits and told she ought to go somewhere else now and then, saying that is why she doesn’t have friends. Ushiwakamaru considered Kiichi a friend, but Kiichi told her she can’t rely on her to be her friend, mentioning she isn’t supposed to get too involved with humans in this world. She was certain there was much Ushiwakamaru didn’t understand, so she advised her to make friends and allies, saying she shouldn’t be alone.[4]
Kagekiyo proclaims they have no need for friends or allies, for they shall destroy everyone and everything.[4]
In the present, the heroes arrive at a town decorated with pumpkins. Seeing them, Ritsuka starts to have a panic attack about it being Halloween. Mash tries to calm them down by reminding them Halloween is still many months away, but Ritsuka points out the decorations much to her surprise.[4]
She checks the heroes’ coordinates and finds they’re at Castle Csejte. She is confused how they could have walked from France to there. But she remembers they did walk through a strange fog and wonders if this means space in the Singularity is distorted. She reassures Ritsuka Elizabeth Báthory nor any other member of the Elizabeth clan is here. While Ritsuka recovers from the shock, the others go search for Evil Ushiwakamaru.[4]
(2/2)
They soon return, but Ritsuka is still out of it. Mash tries to help by reassuring Ritsuka there is no sign of Elizabeth anywhere and the town is an ordinary town that just happens to be decorated with pumpkins. Unfortunately, her efforts are undone when Elizabeth JAPAN shows up.[5]
Mash is confused that Elizabeth is here when Halloween is still a long ways off. Elizabeth boasts Halloween is forever and not even death can stop it. She knows they haven’t had a proper Halloween event since the Csejte Pyramid Himeji Castle incident, so she declares to make this year the Year of Halloween. She wouldn’t go as far as making it Halloween all year long, though she does wonder why she suddenly started thinking about this.[5]
Given how much magical energy she has, Kiichi suspects Elizabeth wasn’t summoned with no reason and demands she tell them what she knows about the Mallet. Elizabeth recalls she was hit by something and the next thing she knew, she transformed into her Japan-themed version. She doesn’t know where the one who hit her went, but they did request her to buy them time, impossible though it may be.[5]
Elizabeth thus challenges Ritsuka to a fight, wanting to prove nothing is impossible. But she knows she cannot take on the heroes all by herself, so she performs Eliza-Split, separating herself into her Lancer, Caster, and Saber variants. The heroes fight the Elizabeths.[5]
The Elizabeths are defeated and return to being a singular person. Elizabeth returns to Chaldea, swearing to put on a Halloween extravaganza this fall that will make all the others seem like nothing.[5]
Putting Elizabeth’s shenanigans aside, Ushiwakamaru wonders what her other self is planning. Kiichi tells her to ask herself what she would use the Mallet for. Ushiwakamaru says she would make her enemies small enough to decapitate them all with a single swing of her sword. Kiichi scolds Ushiwakamaru for her attitude and decides she is no longer her student.[5]
Benkei points out to Kiichi, though, that she will not stand out amongst the heroes gathered in Chaldea if she is no longer a teacher. Being a mentor to promising young people is her passion after all, so he asks if she is ready to abandon her position as Ushiwakamaru’s mentor. Kiichi is annoyed Benkei is picked now of all times to defend Ushiwakamaru.[5]
She suddenly makes Ritsuka her student, insisting their refusal to give up in the face of humanity’s extinction will make them a better student than Ushiwakamaru. She dislikes the fact they have several mentors already, but quickly dismisses that concern. The heroes continue their search for Evil Ushiwakamaru.[5]
To Australia?
(1/2)
When Ushiwakamaru finished her training, she declared she would use the techniques Kiichi taught her to kill the Taira clan. She insisted this desire was hers and hers alone and denied it was the influence of her mother. She then tried to read Kiichi a letter from her brother.[6]
Kiichi reminded her though that she had no interest in any matter pertaining to this world. She didn’t care about siding with either the Taira or the Genji and merely took Ushiwakamaru on as a student. She didn’t teach her because she was the child of the Genji’s leader.[6]
While she wouldn’t normally concern herself, Kiichi warned Ushiwakamaru the place she sought was sadder, emptier, and more terrible that anyone should have to bear. Ushiwakamaru dismissed her mentor’s warning, though, certain she exists only to help her brother in Azuma Province.[6]
Kagekiyo proclaims they hate Yorimoto more than anything, yet love him so much they can’t stand it. Ritsuka wonders if they’re Ushiwakamaru, piquing Kagekiyo’s interest that someone is willing to speak to them.[6]
In the present, Kiichi walks along a beach with Ritsuka while doting on them. Jason asks Ushiwakamaru if Kiichi was always so doting. Ushiwakamaru recalls Kiichi was widely known for her harshness, which surprises Medb as she considers Kiichi a big time doter.[6]
Kiichi notes they seem to be in another country and Ritsuka seems to be exhausted from all the traveling, especially seeing how they were spacing out not that long ago. Benkei suspects Ritsuka experienced one of their REM episodes based on how the former described it as a daydream, yet not. Medb thinks it’s possible Ritsuka unwittingly formed a connection with a Chaldean Servant with the most likely suspect being Evil Ushiwakamaru, i.e. Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Origin. Jason concurs as this whole situation started with Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Origin going haywire.[6]
(2/2)
Later, while searching for Evil Ushiwakamaru, the heroes come across a scene of Medea Lily having been turned into her adult self, Medusa into Gorgon, Iskandar into his younger self, Sitonai into Irisviel, Illyasviel von Einzbern into Fire Iri, and El-Melloi II (accompanied by Gray) into his younger self. Mash had also informed them the beach they’re on is somewhere in Australia. Seeing the transformations had just happened, Kiichi thinks Evil Ushiwakamaru should still be near.[7]
Mash informs the heroes she has detected the Mallet being activated again up ahead. Medea, Gorgon, and Iskandar are turned into their young selves, while Irisviel is turned into Sitonai. Then, encouraged by Alexander and Iskandar, the transformed Servants decide to fight each other except Medea and El-Melloi II, who both want to return to normal. Heeding El-Melloi II’s request, the heroes go help calm down the transformed Servants.[7]
Following a battle, Kiichi returns Medea, Medea Lily, Medusa, and Gorgon all back to normal. Medb goes to ask El-Elloi II who is next, only to find he is absent. Gray informs her that El-Melloi II said there was nothing he could against the group, so he asked her and Ritsuka to handle it while he went toward the Illya group. The heroes then fight Alexander and Iskandar.
After Alexander and Iskandar are returned to normal, the heroes go help El-Melloi II with the Illya group. Illya, Sitonai, and Irisviel are returned to normal following another battle, along with El-Melloi, much to his and Gray’s relief.[7]
Ushiwakamaru asks Illya, Irisviel, and Sitonai if they had seen a Heroic Spirit who looks like her. They all recall seeing a Heroic Spirit with a wooden mallet, but she isn’t here anymore as she had run off immediately after smacking them. Kiichi is irritated they’ll have to track her down with the needle again. Ushiwakamaru vows to take her other self’s head, earning a smack from Kiichi for failing to see how disturbing it is for her to want to cut off her own head without hesitation.[7]
To the Heavens?
(1/2)
A flashback shows Kiichi’s daughter, Kouju-no-Mae, agreed to steal her parent’s scrolls of ultimate techniques so Ushiwakamaru could end the Taira’s reign. Kiichi later confronted her student, calling it unforgivable that she tricked her daughter into stealing the scrolls and that she already read them. Ushiwakamaru admitted to her wrongdoing, but she accused Kiichi of not teaching her everything, asking her why she never showed her the “Six Secret Teachings” or the “Three Strategies of Huang Shigon”. She insisted she had to become useful to her brother someday, even if she had to turn to evil means to do so.[8]
Kagekiyo proclaims they utterly abhor the Genji and that they must kill them all, including Yoritomo, who they love and hate more than anything. Ritsuka, unsure if they’re Ushiwakamaru or not, suspects Kagekiyo both loves and hates the Genji and Yorimoto. Kagekiyo decides they will have to kill Ritsuka as well.[8]
In the present, the heroes are now walking on clouds high in the sky. Seeing Kiichi playing the doting mentor with Ritsuka again, Medb remembers Ushiwakamaru once said she studied under a tengu. She suspects Kiichi is a tengu, although she didn’t introduce herself as one, so she questions if she really is Ushiwakmaru’s teacher. Kiichi points out she was in the Chronicle of Yoshitsune, not that it covers her whole story.[8]
Moving on, Medb questions where the needle has led them to exactly. Mash checks the heroes’ coordinates and finds they’re somewhere high above the Mediterranean Sea. The heroes split up in search of Evil Ushiwakamaru.[8]
(2/2)
Unfortunately, none of them could find her. Kiichi is hesitant to leave, though, as they still don’t know if Evil Ushiwakamaru did anything bad here. Mash then reports she has detected what she assumes may be Chaldean Servants when Kiichi is attacked by the Dioscuri. Castor proclaims the heroes’ journey ends here.[9]
Jason requests the twins get out of their way for old times’ sake, but Castor declines and suggests the heroes give up. Pollux apologizes to Jason, for her brother has already made up his mind. Jason questions if Castor was offered something worth betraying old friends.[9]
Oda Nobunaga confirms that is indeed the case for Evil Ushiwakamaru had promised to use the Mallet to grant a wish as long as they held the heroes up here. Oda Nobukatsu is accompanying her, and seeing him, Benkei presumes that means both pairs of siblings will try to stop them.[9]
Kiichi questions how they got into this situation when they’re up in the clouds. Nobunaga claims, like the Dioscuri have one thanks to their former status as star gods, that she has a connection to the sky because she is the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven. Ritsuka questions if that is what “Heavens” in Sixth Heaven means. Kiichi explains in Buddhism the Sixth Heaven is the realm of desire and said to be in a constant state of flux. She supposes that could apply to a world above the clouds.[9]
Nobunaga then reveals she sided with Evil Ushiwakamaru because she is technically part of the Taira clan, being a descendant. Ushiwakamaru is confused why Nobunaga would bring the Taira up. Her clan, the Genji, and the Taira, were sworn enemies, but every Servant gathered here (except Kiichi) serves under the sam Master now. Castor cuts her off before she can ask why, declaring he is going to kill the heroes and have his wish granted. Pollux readies to fight alongside her brother, again apologizing for him, and asks Ritsuka to just play along.
The Oda siblings join in as well, with Nobunaga calling forth her crow tengu army. Benkei wonders if it was the bond between Evil Ushiwakamaru and the Mallet that summoned the crow tengu. The heroes battle the Dioscuri and the Oda Sibilings.[9]
Thanks to Kiichi, the heroes seem to have the advantage, but Castor reveals the Mallet has already granted his wish. While its effect are instantaneous on other Heroic Spirits, they are delayed for him and his sister. His wish was for them to return to their past selves, meaning they will become gods once their clock has turned back.[9]
The Dioscuri’s magical energy grows tenfold. They’re too powerful now to be considered Heroic Spirits, rather they are Divine Spirits. With the Dioscuri stronger than before, the heroes fight them and the Oda siblings once more.[9]
They struggle against the Dioscuri with the latter getting stronger every time they revert further into their past. Jason questions how they will fight them once the Dioscuri return to their true forms. But his fears end up unfounded once the twins fully revert to their true form as gods: the Gemini constellation. Everyone is left astonished by what just happened with Mash confused to why she can’t detect the Dioscuri’s magical energy anymore. The Oda siblings also surrender.[9]
Kiichi reassures she’ll be able to turn the Dioscuri and the Singularity back to normal once she has the Mallet back. Mash questions, though, how it would be possible to use the Mallet to repair every anomaly in the Singularity even if its massive magical energy is the source of the Singularity. Kiichi proclaims everything will work out, but first they need to find Evil Ushiwakamaru and get the Mallet back from her.[9]
Jason asks the Oda siblings if they know where Evil Ushiwakamaru is. Nobunaga says she doesn’t, but Nobukatsu says Evil Ushiwakamaru went west. Ushiwakamaru confirms that is indeed the case with the needle. The heroes thus head west.[9]
To New York?
(1/2)
Kagekiyo calls for the Genji to be annihilated. They claim to Ritsuka to be Yoshitsune, calling themself the embodiment of the Genji’s destruction and hatred personified. Ritsuka doesn’t think Kagekiyo is lying, but they suspect they aren’t telling the whole story. They ask who they really are, doubting they are Ushiwakmaru.[10]
Edmond Dantès suddenly appears and banishes Kagekiyo from Ritsuka’s dream. Kagekiyo doubts Ritsuka will remember the dream, but that doesn’t matter, for they will meet in person soon enough. They reveal they are Taira-no-Kagekiyo, the one who will kill Yoritomo and reap the regret and love Yoshitsune feels for him.[10]
The heroes arrive in a city, presumably New York. Like before, they split up to search for Evil Ushiwakamaru.[10]
(2/2)
They fail to find her, but Jason senses something familiar and heaps praises on it. Everyone except Kiichi and even Jason himself seem to know who he is talking about as there is only one person he’d ever praise besides himself.[11]
A mighty roar is then heard, and people are seen fleeing, screaming about a giant. At Cú Chulainn Alter’s direction, the heroes look up to see a giant Heracles. He is bigger than he was in Agartha and is sizable enough to be classified as a full-fledged giant now.[11]
Medb says she would’ve brought David along if she knew beforehand they had to deal with a giant. Cú Chulainn Alter doubts David could help in this situation, tsuspecting giant Heracles still retains the traits he does normally. Kiichi doesn’t know what those traits are, so Medb informs her they are his ability to resurrect up to eleven times and being impervious to attacks below A-rank.[11]
The others look to Jason for some strategy they can use against Heracles, but Jason asserts the latter is invincible. He then raves about how he wants to stay and watch giant Heracles destroy the world. Cú Chulainn Alter brings him back to reality by smacking him and pointing out that Heracles is too berserk to even remember him. Still, Jason maintains they can’t defeat Heracles just by attacking him like usual.[11]
Seeing as Heracles is already on top of a skyscraper, Medb suggests they demolish it and let the fall kill him. Jason reminds her, though, that even if that did work, they would have to repeat eleven times to kill him. He jokes Heracles would probably swallow them whole if they got too close.[11]
Upon hearing Jason say that, Kiichi and Ushiwakamaru both get the same idea. Kiichi explains she’ll cast a spell to shrink all of them, then they will jump into Heracles’s mouth. Afterward, they’ll split up and search for a way to kill him from inside. Ritsuka agrees with Kiichi’s plan, so the heroes head up the building Heracles is on to execute her plan.[11]
As the heroes go up the building, Medb complains they’re using the stairs instead of the elevator. Ushiwakamaru suggests that she exercise, a suggestion Medb takes umbrage with. Kiichi is delighted to see Ushiwakamaru has made friends with people who accept her for who she is, finding friendship to be healthy and beautiful, and is glad her student was summoned to Chaldea. Medb and Ushiwakamaru, however, insist they are not, nor will they ever be friends.[11]
The heroes exit to the rooftop. There Kiichi explains the plan is for everyone to jump at Heracles’s mouth together, then she’ll shrink them before they land inside. Benkei thinks it would be better for Kiichi to shrink them before they jump, which would also reduce the chance of Heracles spotting them. But Ushiwakamaru points out they wouldn’t be able to make the jump if they’re shrunk beforehand. Also, they want Heracles to notice them so he’ll look their way, which will make it easier to land in his mouth.[11]
Kiichi casts a spell that carries everyone over to Heracles. He sees them having taken obvious notice of the huge surge of magical energy next to him. Kiichi then shrinks everyone and they all drop into Heracles’ mouth.[11]
Inside Heracles, the heroes find that instead of an actual stomach, his insides are now a whole world populated by monsters and demons. The needle gets a reaction and Ushiwakamaru assumes it means her evil counterpart is inside Heracles as well. Kiichi finds that unlikely, but given the needle’s reaction, she suspects it is something made from the Mallet. The heroes discover it is another Heracles with whom they do battle.[11]
They defeat him, which dispels the giantification on the real Heracles. The heroes hurry out of him before he returns to normal size.[11]
Outside, the needle suddenly opens a distortion in space. Mash informs the heroes another Singularity has been detected. Its signal is much stronger than the other Singularities the heroes have been to. Mash suspects the distortion is at the heart of it all.[11]
The needle is reacting stronger than ever, which possibly means Evil Ushiwakamaru on the other side. The heroes go through the distortion, hoping to settle this incident once and for all.[11]
To Kamakura
Kagekiyo describes themself as both part Taira and part Genji, but both are of the same mind. They call for Yoshitsune for them to proceed together to Kamakura, declaring it is time to kill her brother.[12]
The heroes arrive in Kamakura, though it isn’t how Ushiwakamaru remembers it. She also senses her brother is here.[12]
Medb questions what Evil Ushiwakamaru is doing here, knowing cannot be by happenstance given it seems to be significant to Ushiwakamaru. Kiichi guesses she came here to destroy it, reminding everyone that Evil Ushiwakamaru began acting independently, not as Ushiwakamaru or Shana-oh, but as Yoshitsune. It should therefore be no surprise she may want to destroy Kamakura, given how much she hated when she was alive.[12]
However, she thought if Evil Ushiwakamaru wanted to destroy Kamakura, she’d try to do it while Yoritomo was alive, but this Kamakura seems to be close to present day. Mash tells Kiichi it is common for micro Singularities to manifest in modern times. Kiichi assumes Evil Ushiwakaru lacked the magical energy to go back in time, even with the Mallet, and settled for destroying a more modern Kamakura. But Evil Ushiwakamaru tells her she is wrong.[12]
She admits it is true she hates Kamakura, as it is where Yoshitsune died when her brother betrayed her gives her ample reason to. Kiichi is confused as to why Evil Ushiwakamaru is talking like she and Yoshitsune are different people. Evil Ushiwakamaru declares she will start with Ritsuka first.[12]
A violet mist suddenly appears. Mash warns everyone to be careful as the mist seems to be accessing the leyline.[12]
Evil Ushiwakamaru reveals Kamakura is a trap she laid with the Mallet and proclaims it will soon become a land of nightmares. She then further reveals all the places the heroes had visited were in truth Kamakura. They were all ways to practice and prepare the spell to transform Kamakura. France was Futokoro-jima, Csejte was Nuhama, Australia was Enoshima, the Mediterranean sky was Awafune, and New York was Kanazawa, Evil Ushiwakamaru gave each of these places unique characteristics and lured Chaldean Servants to occupy them. Mash realizes that is why there was a delay whenever they tried to determine the team’s location.[12]
Jason asks Evil Ushiwakamaru why she would go through so much trouble. Evil Ushiwakamaru replies she already said it was to prepare, and thanks to that, she finally learned how to use the Mallet’s full power. Now she has used it to transform Kamakura into a land of nightmare, imbuing all those who intrude upon it with particular. She confirms Kiichi’s suspicions it is something that will give her attacks greater potency, proclaiming the heroes are now targets of her wrath and that no Genji can escape it.[12]
Kiichi questions how Evil Ushiwakamaru can be so conniving as she was never like this when she taught her. Ushiwakamaru tells Kiichi that is because Evil Ushiwakmaru isn’t her. They may look like her, but they’re not her, and she would never do anything to harm Ritsuka. She demands “Evil Ushiwakamaru” reveal who they truly are.
“Evil Ushiwakamaru” is impressed Ushiwakamaru, calling her fragment of Ushiwakamaru, saw right through them. They are both Yoshitsune and not Yoshitsune. They are hatred incarnate whose sole purpose is to take revenge on every last Genji. Their True Name is Taira-no-Kagekiyo.[12]
Ritsuka remembers meeting Kagekiyo before, recalling they’re a vengeful ghost who is merged with Yoshitsune. Kagekiyo thought it was odd they felt so comfortable in Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin, but now they understand it is because they merged at least once before. They figure that bond must have remained, even if Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin retained no record of it.
Mash explains Kagekiyo was a legendary samurai for the Kanmu Heishi around the end of the Heian period. They despise the Genji for deposing the Taira and establishing the shogunate, and they were hell-bent on taking revenge on Yoritomo in particular. Medb questions why someone like that would use Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Origin, asking if they’re a fusion of two Heroic Spirits or something.[12]
Kiichi finds despite being from opposing clans, Ushiwakamaru and Kagekiyo have much in common with the only difference is that Kagekiyo has less substance. Mash confirms the Kagekiyo depicted in the legends was born more from fiction than historical events. Kiichi thus surmises Kagekiyo never possessed a body of their own and is more a ghost than a Heroic Spirit. She further deduces Kagekiyo plans to take over Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin for themself, which is why they turned Kamakura into a land where any who enter it become her quarry. She thought they did it to kill, but she now sees their true target is Ritsuka.[12]
Kagekiyo confirms Kiichi’s deductions, doubtless that they could carry out their life’s work of eradicating the Genji if they were to properly fuse with Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin. Once they have killed every Genji across time, both Yoshitsune’s revenge and their own will be at last complete. However, Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin derived from Ushiwakamaru continues to resist, so they decide they will break her spirit, meaning Ushiwakamaru’s, by killing the one she admires as much as Yoritomo: Ritsuka.[12]
Kiichi sees Kagekiyo expects Ushiwakamaru’s soul will vanish, thus leaving her body empty, if her Master were to die now. Mash tries to dissuade Kagekiyo from killing Ritsuka by pointing out nearly every materialized Heroic Spirit will disappear without a Master anchoring them to the world. But Kiichi reminds Mash that Kagekiyo still has the Mallet.
Kagekiyo dislikes Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin still recognizes Ritsuka as its Master, so they offer to spare their life if they agree to serve them. Ritsuka refuses, so Kagekiyo decides they have no choice but to kill them. Kiichi refuses to let them, declaring Ritsuka belongs to her. Kagekiyo is amused by Kiichi’s “joke” and decides to repay the favor by fighting the heroes.[12]
The heroes are in danger of being overwhelmed by the crow tengu Kagekiyo summoned with the Mallet. But to everyone’s surprise, Kiichi reveals as its owner she can call the Mallet back to her, causing it to fly out of Kagekiyo’s pocket and into her hand. She then reveals her true identity is SoujoubouWP, the Buddhist high priest of Mt. Kurama and king of the tengu, with her other name being Kurama Tengu, the greatest and most powerful tengu in all of Japan.[12]
Benkei asks Kiichi why she jyst didn’t call the Mallet back to her earlier, certain she could have done it at an even greater distance. Kiichi embarrassedly admits she wanted to see what Chaldea was capable of since Ushiwakamaru seems so comfortable there.[12]
Kagekiyo asserts they do not need any more crow tengu to fight for them, saying they’ll Ritsuka and the others themself. Kiichi refuses to let that happen and hits Kagekiyo with the Mallet. Her strike has implanted the seed, so she tells Yoshitsune to make a wish and retake her Spirit Origin from Kagekiyo if she wants to return to her old self. Kagekiyo asserts Yoshitsune will never be able to leave them, for they both hate Yoritomo and the Genji and it was Yoshitsune’s own enmity that drew them in the first place.[12]
Medb considers it pitiful that Kagekiyo only seems to care about grudges and killing. She herself spent her life indulging in endless pleasure and freedom, only to die miserably angry and resentful. But no matter how tainted she might become, she still wants to be beautiful and believes that is what it means to be herself. She asks Yoshitsune what it means to be herself.
While she very much hates to admit it, Medb considers Yoshitsune’s body something to be proud of. She hates her personality, but Yoshitsune has one of the best warrior bodies she has ever seen. She therefore asks her why how long she intends to let Kagekiyo continue to possess her, threatening to be exorcise them herself if she doesn’t.[12]
Yoshitsune wrests control of her body back from Kagekiyo, much to the latter’s shock. Ushiwakamaru takes this opportunity to take back her Spirit Origin, allowing her to return to her original self. However, Kagekiyo still looks like Yoshitsune, as Ushiwakamaru failed to take back all of her Spirit Origin.[12]
Kagekiyo demands Ushiwakamaru give her Spirit Origin back to them. They lack a Spirit Origin of their own and they need Yoshitsune’s to eradicate the Genji. Ushiwakamaru refuses to let them have even a fragment of her Spirit Origin, for only Ritsuka can command it. Kagekiyo’s anger at Ushiwakamaru’s indignation causes their spirit body to leak out of Yoshitsune’s Spirit Origin in the form of a giant ghost. Kiichi uses the Mallet to return the others back to normal before they all fight Kagekiyo for the last time.[12]
After they’re defeated, it is revealed Kagekiyo had known Ushiwakamaru since she was a child. The Taira took her and her mother in and she always kept by Lord Kiyomori, but no matter who she was with, she always alone. She never smiled nor cried; her face was always devoid of emotion. By the time she gave up her childhood name, she was sent to train at the temple on Mt. Kurama. Kagekiyo never thought they would meet again.[12]
But one day they happened to see her at Kiichi’s house cheerfully and comfortably speaking with the latter. They agreed with Kiichi when she told Ushiwakamaru she shouldn’t be alone. They believed she was better off with someone else because, after all, when she was with Kiichi, her smile was genuine.[12]
Later they learned Ushiwakamaru joined her brother and was now a sworn enemy of the Taira. They had hoped the day would never come, but they accepted it had come nonetheless and headed into battle, hoping their paths would never cross.
But Kagekiyo had suffered countless deaths at the hands of Ushiwakamaru, now known as Yoshitsune, who led the Genji alongside her brother. The Genji had slaughtered the Taira without mercy. Kagekiyo swore vengeance on the Genji and vowed to watch over Yoshitsune carrying the hatred of the entire Taira clan until the day she dies.[12]
Then, at the plains of Oushu, Kagekiyo witnessed Yoshitsune meet her demise, having been betrayed by her brother. They revealed they were the wrath of the Taira clan itself and hoped Yoshitsune’s final words would be that of hatred towards Yoritomo and the Genji so they may eradicate them together. But Yoshitsune spoke no final words and instead cried, wishing for someone else’s happiness.[12]
Having failed to acquire Yoshitsune for themself, Kagekiyo tried thirty-seven times to kill Yoritomo but failed each time. In time, they were forgotten by history, but many years later they were reunited with Ushiwakamaru thanks to Kiichi using the Mallet on the latter. They vowed they wouldn’t lose her this time, saying there is no need for her to cry, for they only wish for their shared desire for vengeance to bring them together.[12]
Ushiwakamaru realizes it was Kagekiyo who wept alongside her back then, though she didn’t realize at the time since they lacked a form of their own. She knows she cried back then, but she reassures Kagekiyo that she has never been alone, so there is no need to worry about her. Kagekiyo disappears, pleased to hear that Ushiwakamaru is not alone and thus will no longer cry.[12]
Farewell to Kamakura
Yoshitsune apologizes to the heroes for the trouble and thanks them for their kindness. She wishes she had time to thank them properly, so she just promises to serve faithfully if she ever materializes before them again someday. However, she warns there is a possibility Kagekiyo may be summoned alongside her now that her faith is tied to them.[13]
Both Medb and Ritsuka think it will be fine if Kagekiyo is summoned as long as they behave themself. Ritsuka reaffirms their decision when Kiichi asks if they’re sure, regretting they didn’t get to really talk with Kagekiyo. Ushiwakamaru finds Kagekiyo is a perfect match for her Spirit Origin, so she, too, would like a proper conversation with them sometime.[13]
Yoshitsune again thanks everyone for their kindness. Once the Mallet’s magical energy wears off, her Spirit Origin will fade and fill in the gaps in Ushiwakamaru’s Spirit Origin. Ushiwakamaru says goodbye to her other self, reassuring her that she will take good care of Ritsuka. Yoshitsune is pleased to hear that and disappears, bidding everyone farewell. Kiichi then uses her Noble Phantasm to correct the micro Singularity.[13]
A flashback shows Kiichi had at first refused to take Ushiwakamaru on as a student, believing children are meant to play. But Ushiwakamaru replied as child of Minamoto-no-Yoshitomo, the leader of the Genji, she was born a warrior and would die a warrior. Thus, she didn’t act like other children and was adamant that Kiichi train her, revealing she knew the latter was a tengu.[13]
Kiichi warned Ushiwakamaru she would become a monster herself by surpassing human limits if she trains under a monster. She would be doomed to die alone as an enemy of other every human. Ushiwakamaru, however, insisted she wouldn’t regret her decision.[13]
Seeing she was serious, Kiichi agreed to train Ushiwakamaru on the condition she first learn how to act like a typical human child and called for her daughter to play with the former. Kiichi had hoped she could purge Ushiwakamaru of all her anger and turn into an ordinary child, but to her regret, she failed to do so.
In the present, at Chaldea, Kiichi vows to herself she will not fail again, admitting that is why she came to Chaldea and punishing Ushiwakamaru was just a pretense. So she will stay and watch Ushiwakamaru to make sure she doesn’t go down the same path she did in life. She refuses to fail again and swears to save her students, both Ritsuka and Ushiwakamaru.
She tells Ritsuka that she can see their path is long and arduous. As their teacher, she wants to see them through the end of their path safely, not wishing to see one of her students die a miserable death again. Thus, she suggests her students prepare themselves wishing to not repeated the same mistakes she made with Ushiwakamaru. As if she knows what is coming, Ushiwakamaru promptly runs away.[13]
In the library, Fergus and Caesar are still on the floor, pretending to still be injured from when Kiichi defeated them as they plan for Murasaki to find them and nurse them back to health. Murasaki does indeed find them and goes to get the first aid kit when Scáthach offers to treat their “injuries” instead.[13]
Fergus and Caesar immediately get up out of fear of Scáthach. Kiichi appears and calls them out for using their earlier fight, where she went easy on them, as a pretext to have a beautiful woman look after them. She decides they both need a harsh lesson, which Scáthach fully supports and offers to help. Kiichi is grateful to Scáthach and considers the two of them friends, much to the horror of Fergus and Caesar.[13]
